    I too bought this album after hearing One Armed scissor, but now its just one of my favorite songs. I often want to listen Arcarsenal, but because all the songs are great, I listen to the whole album. This band still doesn't get the credit it deserves.

      Toxik-Vermin they had pretty different styles, with The Mars Volta being punk tinged progressive Latin jazz fusion, but were headed by the same vocalist and guitarist (Cedric and Omar)

    The same thing happened to me with my dad while on vacation lol. I was outside and Cygnus...Vismund Cygnus was playing, and he was instantly like, "What even is this noise?" And then when the slower jam part started, I could tell by his face that he was trying to find out what the time signature was. It was just so hilarious because for 5 minutes straight he had this really confused face. Then when the vocals came in, he finally figured it out and had the biggest smile I've ever seen on him. Then the song ended and I swear, for the next 3 hours, he was constantly humming the bassline from that part of the song. Glad I got my dad into The Mars Volta lol.

    Great video, great analysis of each track and the album as a whole. While I have not really listened to it in a number of years, I remembered every song so vividly that it felt like I had just listened to the whole thing yesterday. That just goes to show how incredibly memorable their sound and creativity really are, even after all this time. If I had to compare them to another band, I'd maybe say Fugazi? You might want to check them out if you haven't already since you may enjoy them regardless.

      They never got the mainstream attention At the Drive In got but it's certainly in the same vein, they even reformed a few years ago and released a great comeback album. The lyrics are more straight forward than At the Drive In's but Refused are from Sweden so it's kind of to be expected from a singer not writing in their native tongue

    When i was younger than 5 my dad put on this album in the car. I used to like it because i thought it was some of the heaviest music ever. I now obviously kno what it isnt. But when i look back at my memories i remember it being alot louder. Anyway about 5 years ago i put the album on my ipod and i would only listen to my whole extensive music on shuffle. After being impressed by one of their songs i decided to listen to the full album. After first time it was ok but verytime i listened to it i realised how epic it is. Anyway 5 years later and i still listen to it. And i plan to show it to my future children.

    Great review sir ! I had forgotten how good was Cosmonaut...
    Regarding the emo reference, Fugazi had a big influence on them (and Minor Threat too, by extend) so there you go. What was great about ATDI was all the electronica, avant garde sounds and percussions that were layered all over their post hardcore sound. When you listen to the Mars Volta, it's pretty obvious what was on Omar's mind all along. Anyway, thanks man, now I have to listen to this bloody album for the rest of the week !

    You know something? I HAVE always wondered what Relationship of Command would sound like if it had In/Casino/Out's or Vaya's production values.
    Also, I don't know if I'm in the minority here, but does anyone else here think At The Drive In's pre-Vaya catalogue is grossly underrated?
    I know that their claim to fame is their bonkers, experimental approach to punk and don't get me wrong here, that's where they shine best... but the stuff from before they got all proggy when they had a more traditional 90s emo/post-hardcore approach was really solid too. Acrobatic Tenament had a lo-fi charm to it and even had a track like "Schaffino" on it that almost sounds like it should have 60s surfing contest footage for its music video.
    And seriously, El Gran Orgo is the most underrated 90s emo style EP EVER!
    If it had been a full length album and if its release hadn't been such a mess (look it up if you're curious), I guarantee that it would have been a classic.

    This album was my gateway into post-hardcore (now my fav genre) and any genre with screaming. Top 10 favorite album for sure, probably top 5. Arcarsenal blew my mind and is still my second favorite, but Invalid Litter Dept. will always be my favorite ATDI song. Cedric's screams are visceral and haunting and the lyrics/music video are so depressing, it truly is a powerful song in every sense of the word.
    Mannequin Republic, Enfilade, and Cosmonaut are also killer tracks

    I think it was the song "Non-Zero Possibility" that made my buy the album.
    I heard One Armed Scissor and Rolodex Propaganda before and I thought they were pretty amazing (One Armed Scissor at Jool Holland's performance).As a Massive Mars Volta fan, I can see a lot of those influences in this album.I actually like to think the Trembulant EP is a natural progression from this album.
    (Trembulant seems to be a continuation of ATDI's Vaya EP).
    I just love both bands to be honest, they haven't released a bad album in my opinion.

    Yeah I wish there were more fellow Mormons who shared my love for rock music (though I have a few Mormon friends who are very passionate about rock and metal music). I go to BYU-Idaho, which is more or less just as strict as BYU Provo. It's a smaller school and feels more community based, so I like that aspect of it.
    Anyway, I enjoyed your review as always. I've never heard of this band, so I'll have to check 'em out sometime. My music library is ever expanding!

    Its great watching a video where you talk about an album your passionate about. You should do it more often. Sadly, the people would rather watch you suffer through nickelback and kid rock. Just know that there are some us that suffer with you. Some us just listened to the same CDs over and over until they moved out of their Mom's place and upgraded from dial-up.

    19:45 - I'm a Mormon and I love ATDI. Absolutely agree with what you're saying though. Even in here in the UK the majority of Mormons still have the same terrible taste in music, movies, books, art, food, basically anything that it's possible to have a passion for.

      Yep! Although my brother offered to DJ at one once for free and managed to clear the room quite quickly and a lot of people complained. He didn't even play anything that extreme- it just wasn't to the majorities taste. He should have put on some gangster rap. (He did squeeze in a sample of the Maylene and the Sons of Disaster song Memories of the Grove over something though). I also went to one in Norway where one of my pals was in charge and played a Clutch song but they were cool with it because Norwegians are generally pretty awesome.

    They do sound a lot like Fugazi though, with a sign of what's about to come with Mars Volta. Best way to describe them would be something like : Fugazi with Gerard Way as a singer, with just a bit more stamina than Gerard. It really is a tie between Cedric and Gerard who goes more over the top with vocals. By the way, if you were wondering what this album would sound like if left unpolished and rough : In/Casino/Out is the answer. These albums sound so incredibly alike, that when I played one after another, I couldn't tell the difference apart from a few songs, and there lies my main issue with these guys : all of their projects sound similar. Antemasque songs are interchangeable with this and some of Mars Volta stuff too. And that's the only downside of these guys : If they would strip away all the sonic chaos that's floating through your ears and slow things down, no one would care any more about them. But I'm still grateful for them because without this album, there would be no Three Cheers for Sweet Revenge, and probably no MCR at all. Anyway, keep up the good work, and good luck. We all want to see a RTP for Chinese Democracy, there's gonna be some pretty hard debate over that.

    • @RockedNet
      @RockedNet  7 лет назад +4

      The RTP for Chinese Democracy is close to meeting it's goal. For better or worse, it definitely is a strong piece of rock history.

    • @MrM2J3
      @MrM2J3 7 лет назад +1

      Well, it kind of is. Shitload of money spent, fans left waiting for 13 years, non-consistent line-up with some questionable replacements, and what have we got? Good but outdated album(though I'll fight anyone who says that Sorry or Better aren't great songs, but the album doesn't feature enough Buckethead). Also, here are some other recommendations, if you want to add some of these for patreon goals :
      In Through The Out Door (more in a "people don't or didn't like it even though it's good" way, I think that also counts as a RTP)
      Tatoo You (not their worst but this was the first that came to mind, Goat's Soup also)
      Lick it Up (or even Hot in the Shade,though they didn't actually sell that much, but still sucked)
      Be Here Now (now this is a good example of regret)
      Hysteria(if you want to get controversial, shit production, formulaic as hell, but then any late 80s hair metal is appropriate)
      Metallica(it sold 30 million copies even though it's not that great, some songs sound a bit formulaic)
      Third Maroon 5 effort (turned from a solid pop-rock-funk-jazz band to bland pop one here)
      Any post-Mob Rules Sabbath.
