  • This is how I make my own individual texture mats for clay. These are great if you want to make a set of pottery items and replicate the design on each. For example, if you want to make a set of plates with the same design, having a rubber texture mat is very helpful. But I found it hard to find exactly what I was looking for to buy. So I decided to make my own. Here is how I make my own clay texture mats.

If you use freezer paper with the shiny side down, you can not only use it over and over, but you won't have little paper pieces to pick off. I use it a lot to transfer designs for carving and for making shape templates. The shiny side sticks to the clay but peels off easily and keeps the paper dry.

This was helpful, but I would rather relax and watch other hands do it! LOL! So wonderful! I have so many questions that I'm sure will be answered as I watch more of your content! Thank you!

After you carved the pattern into your leather hard clay what did you do to make sure all the moisture was gone from the clay? It looked like it still had some moisture in it when you removed the moat wall you created. I read somewhere that the rubber doesn't set up if there is moisture.

I see you haven't had a reply, so thought I would mention there are different types of "rubber". (Not actual rubber, but flexible products. Some dry, but some are chemical changes which "set". Be sure and read the information for what you buy. And be sure and use good ventilation.

Its a 2 part silicone mold making kit called 20A translucent platinum RTV - 2 silicone rubber. Most 2 part silicone mold makers will do the trick. 🙂

Thank you for sharing this. Do you use all of the silicone up on one mold, or does it make more than one mat? And what size is your plate form, please?

Hello you don't have to use all the mixture at once if you got some left over you can just put the lid back on and save it for later. I use a 10-inch pottery for mold for the plate. hope that helps :-)
