Solar flairs , war , spiralling markets , oil prices , fert prices , drought , asteroids , its called farming.
Seeded canola into a half section of longtime alfalfa a few years ago. Lighter sandier soil. Didn’t rain. Crop ran 11bu/ac. Crop insurance situation. All the canola fit on two super B’s picked up to Clavet. $25.98/bu. Ended up being our best money making field that year because our avg. was quite a bit higher than 11bu/ac
Interesting project Mike... ha, we're back to praying for rain for you.
Pray for rain for Farmers Every where.
@@farmergage6773 Absolutely, (I'm also a farmer)
I had an uncle from Regina by marriage tell of the thirties when it waa so dry it got to the point where some didnt even plant. He said they planted that one last time when others didnt and they hit a crop. So just keep trying. Hope you haveca long term lease on the ground as you say it will take several years to get the land into top shape. Praying for timely rains for your operation. I hope your crop is so bountiful i have to fly all the way from philippines where i am currently homecaring wife with dementia. We planted flax into virgin grass once in South Dakota with a Wilrich air seeder small points not ideal seeding but got a good crop. Our biggest probkem was killing the grass. Took couple spray attempts but finally succeeded.
2017 seeded into a hay field that was planted in 1986. 8810 on 8 inch spacing wouldn't go in the ground and I couldn't pull it. Had to use my mid row banders to slice a slot into the sod to seed canola. It rained and canola all came up...80 percent hail damage after I swathed it all. lol
Ever the optimist!
Magnifique vidéo et le tracteur et matériel agricole 😂😮😅😊
Good luck.
Great awesome video , however the grass would hold moisture better. But lack of moisture is a issue , test will tell the tale
I would like to try spraying the grass out in late June, then haying it. Should be able to seed directly the next spring. Of course still need moisture to mellow out the soil, but the grass lumps should be degraded. And not an option to plan that far ahead when renting.
Hopefully your gamble, works out. Looking forward for updates.
We are drowning in the midwest USA, you can have our rain storms every 3 days !😂 Happy planting!
Bedankt
Thankyou 🙂
We are enjoying your videos 😀🤩🤪🤐😛😇
Mike, why don't you guys use disk opener drills ? Thay pull so much easier, you don't disturb the ground near as much, you would save a lot of moisture.
Quadruple the maintenance and expenses
Maybe not that much but they are more maintenance and money
I would also love to hear mikes take in it too
Kudos to how clean your monitors and wiring are. No other farmer that I’ve seen has things managed so well. Very professional setup.
Thinking back of the year of 2022
I drilled some grass into winter wheat a couple years. First year wasn't a good stand and then hailed out. The second did quite well. The only bad thing is it is still rough even after 12 years of farming it.
Our Agtron does the exact same thing. Really wish it was just a wired to monitor connection instead of the wifi. I feel like thats the issue. System does work good tho. We had issues with the tablet n agtron sent out a new one which was great of them.
Hey mike is it raining there now, looks like yall have rain up there, hopefully in your area, thanks for sharing
Mike could you do a specs on your air carts with empty/loaded weights ?
you wount know if you dont try something new.good luck🤩👍👍
Just an idea: Cant you put 2 nuts on the opener depth adjust and tighten the nuts against eachother? Should be tight but movable because the torque is against the nuts not the handle.
There are hose burst valves that are specifically made for the purpose of closing the loop in the event of uncontrolled loss of pressure in the hydraulic system, I wonder why they don't use them when building the equipment. They are completely mechanical as well and need no regular maintenance
Usually they work when you don want them to. There made for safety, not oil spil.
5710 series II would drive that seed in no problem, just saying 🤣
We started the irrigation system today. May is usually somewhat dry, but this year it is brutal! The "weather experts" says it's only going to get worse....
I wish we could send some rain your way. We are struggling to get planting in the midwest because it keeps raining.
@@Farmer1277 Thanks! Yea, I'll gladly take some of that rain. At least we got some of the seeds in ground. The rest of the fields have been plowed and cultivated, but we don't dare to put the seeds (turfgrass) in now because of wind erosion. Sure makes farming in silty sand "interesting". Hopefully it clears up soon so you can go full blast with the planter
Would Khart tool bars be what you may need for that super hard packed grass with the dual disc openers. Im a welder for them in winnipeg and that would be a heck of a test field for them.
You should find a bold board plow. And flip it over. That's what we do in Indiana with our hay ground.
A plow would discenterate trying to turn the soil over. And besides that in a short period of time that land would blow away
You must of got some moisture out of that last rains?
Just asked and see if Mike responds
You needed a legume in that grass year one..
You could get in trouble with the Durham in grass.. but maybe not!
Looks like that drill ain’t too tough in no till..smh!
3:15 That seems like a great job for Ny-lok nuts which need a low torque tool or, better yet, hand tightening with a cheap nut driver. Ny-loks work but you can't install them with impact drivers or the friction of spinning in that fast will melt the nylon insert before it seats and you've wasted a dollar by turning it into a ten-cent regular nut. You already know that a regular nut is failing you and costing you time plus lost assemblies that drop randomly on the field.
WOW! I've never read such bollocks.
@@TheMRSTEVEN You should get out of your basement more often and learn a bit of engineering.
@@puirYorick In my 30 odd years of being a mechanic I have never ever seen a nyloc melt or lose its integrity from using a nut gun.
Mike, I have always been curious why pivots aren't and option for you guys? America they are very common. On no rain years we can still pull off 160bu-200bu corn, when the non-irrigated is running well under 50 bu when dealing with summer like you guys are on the south farm.
They could build all the pivots they want but they’d still need water to irrigate with and there’s none of that
@@clearskiesranch1362 we have to drill wells for water so I don’t know why they couldn’t up there as well?
@@GilbyLandscapingno ground water.
so to say the drill will require some major work for next year is bout right?
When will test new John Deere tractor ? 900 HP….
Put a disc ripper in it to loosen up the ground
Morning
One word: plow.
One word:wind
I thought plough or disc too!! But it's too windy to do this as it may just turn to dust 🤷🏻♂️🤔
some red or green loctite on those bolts? rattling shouldn't break that loose, only heat or a VERY angry impact :P
Snow then to hard pan.
Hi mike how are you
you may want to plow the ground and maybe use a speed tiller
No, you absolutely don‘t want to do that. The soil would just blow away afterwards. Listen to what he says, it‘s always windy there.
Keep the residue to have some kind of soil protection. Even with tillage you won‘t grow much of a crop in those conditions.
drill hole for pin in the bolt
Should leave all that grass for the antelope, that’s all that country down there is good for.
Hi Mike, question from France, do you grow brown mustard and how much do you get to sell it? Thank you
Mike, Way don't you guys put a locking nut on the bolt, so that way one counter acts the other nut, it must save you time and money. question how long would it take to learn to operate your combination having tractor driving experience.
How about mash the threads on the end of the bolts, finish the job and then change them all out with a single service rather than dealing with them over and over while seeding?
If you don’t have moisture it’s not going to grow anyway
Mike you need to do a rain dance ?
Need a full on rain dance video.
Disc drill would work better for that sort of drilling
This may seem like a dumb question but being from a home of moisture AND ploughing Or Discing in 🇮🇪 why won't you disc this better go over it once or twice than travelling at 3 mile a hr 😴😴😴🤔 I'm open to correct 😊
Mike are y’all using nylock nuts?
Probably would have waited to do that drilling till the end of seeding..
👍
Is it even worth farming this land
What about loctite on those bolts?
No tillage is so hard on equipment.. Should at least strip till.
I would have waited till it rained and either put canola if it was reasonably early or barley if it rained late.
That would have been better forsure, but since living through the last 3 years, we aren't guaranteed a rain anymore. 😆
@@mikemitchell2554 now I'm curious.......how much rain/snow have you all had at the main farmyard in the last two weeks
@@carlfalt174 3inches, and thunderstorms rained them out again today, so not counting that! It's awesome, more than years combined 🙂
@@mikemitchell2554 excellent start for the season 👏 👌. Now to finish strong by having timely rain. Bet it's been years since there has been that much rain before May 15th
@@carlfalt174 since 2016
3” rain do u guys a wonder
“I was counting on a rain.” The man’s been wrong for three years straight.
I think not too long after this video was made they had a few days of rain so that's good news.
Hopefully, this is his year.
@@beaviccoon470 I hope that he got a good soaker. I love his channel but it’s been painful to watch over these recent dry years.
Lock nuts would help.
Are there any cattle guys up in your area? Why not let them harvest the grass for the year and then in the fall chisel plow the grass and then plant it in the next spring
It's windy up there, say goodbye to your soil
Only 4 pails of oil? That’s only 20 gallons. That tractor must have more oil than that ?
👋🏼😎
If the ground is that hard, why not cultivate it before seeding?
Because the wind never quits down there. Say goodbye to your soil.
@@davidlogel2350 And moisture.
Can you put donavan in one of your videos 🙏
Likely better just to summer fallow that block, youll only lose the rent money.
It was thought about forsure, I guess I risked it for the biscuits 😬😆
@@mikemitchell2554 granted with the size if your operation its not like you were risking it all for a test plot lol.
Probably better to go to the casino than farming
I've always said us farmers are the biggest gamblers in the world.
Mike, have you ever tried a disc opener drill vs the hoe drill? If so how did it work? I know people will complain about either type.
Anyone who has tried them has went back. Too many moving parts and poor seed to soil contact. Of course they were sold on the idea of running them at 10 mph, which is likely a large part of the issue.
🤦
Seed into dust and your bins will bust. Seed into grass and you might end up looking like an ass.
😆 Oh, so nothing new then? 🤣
@@mikemitchell2554 no. just stay awsome.
Just a question, have you thought about center pivots or walking guns? Maybe could cover enough land for seed the following years. We're dry in Florida too. Waiting on rain for hay. Love the videos
Need water if you’re going to irrigate
That’s great and all but their isn’t any water 😅
This seeding is truly a High Risk ....Seed Bed prep is critical to successful planting.....
You probably make more money by doing a hay crop !
So why are you doing it if it’s that hard on the drill? Maybe plow the field first?
Why do it
Why don't you disc it first to break up the hard pan
You’d lose all the top soil
This was filmed before the 3 days of rain last week… 😂
Thank God they got some rain!
All for the insurance check.
😆 That's not how that works, but I appreciate the input.
Dis is a disaster.
That gonna be a he'll of a pull
Could there be a reason it is grass dude?
Are u trying to be Monette Farms?🤔🙈🙆
We got lots of rain starting in May, in Saskatoon, you get that?
