This is perhaps the first photoshop video I have ever seen where no steps were skipped and everything was simple and easy to follow without confusing me or having me go "Wait I'm doing exactly what he's doing! Why is mine not working?!" Keep it up!
Thank You so much! It was like pulling teeth to find even the most basic shortcuts, such as resizing brushes, zooming out and in, duplicating layers and such. You taught me how to do all that instead of the month of searching and self learning.
This is one of the best, most comprehensive tutorials for any photoshop effect I have ever seen. You've just earned a subscriber. Edit: Oh, and your taste in music is fire (lol.)
Thanks for putting this awesome tutorial out on to youtube for free! And thanks for those free brushes you have no idea how you've helped me with those
@@Sally_G He selects the black color with color range first and then when you create a layer mask, it loads only the black colored part into the layer mask, meaning the flame part won't be affected by the Layer 1 Copy 2. But we want to make it affect the flame not the black background. Ctrl+I inverts black and white regions in the layer mask. So now only the flame is affected not the black color area. This is unnecessary if we can directly select the flame part in the beginning with color range, but the flame is too complex to select so instead it is easier to select the black area and then invert it...Hope this helped...
Been a while since I made fire for a piece and forgot how. Found this when I was looking, and it's exactly what I was looking for. Thanks. And great vid.
It is a pre-made brush with custom brush setting that allow the brush to change its size, opacity and rotation. You can find the brushes that I'm talking about @0:49
There seems to be a problem in the tutorial. When you fade the fire to vivid light or color dodge, is changes the hole picture. Also, control + select doesn't seem to select the fire but the hole picture...
i keep get this message when i use COLOR RANGE: "Warning: No pixels are more than 50% selected. the selection egdes will not be visible.", anyways the range 120-150 doesn't work for me it either higher than 195+ or nothing at all, any clue brother?.
You can find the brush link in the video description. to install it, Go to Edit> Presets> Preset Manger and then click the "Load" button and select the brush file you want to import. Or just drag and drop the brush file inside Photoshop.
Also after creating the first copied layers of the flame that were changed from vivid light and color dodge into a smart object, then going into select and color range, then hitting ok after selecting the fuzziness, you get a message that says 50% of the pixels were not selected and will not be visible, then when you convert into a layer mask the fire appears as a feint white color....if this video actually works for anyone I'm happy for them but it definitely didn't for me
When I go to do the colour range after following your video, it says "no pixels selected". I've tried three times now. I don't understand why the message? I cannot go any further. Photoshop CC
It's telling you that there is no pixels over 50% selected and the selection edge will not be visible (but it do exist!). So, keep up with the tutorial and the tutorial should work with you.
It seems that your drawn fire is too transparent, you can also make some opaque spots when you are drawing the fire with the brush. these spots will be selected when you click CTRL+Click, and you won't get that error!
What is your Photoshop version? What is checked in this menu Image> Mode? RGB and 8bit or something else Drag another image in Photoshop and go to Select> Color Range, Does it still grayed out ?
Open another image in Photoshop and check if color range work or not? if not try resetting the Photoshop preferences file by holding Ctrl+Shift+Alt or Ctrl+Shift+Option while starting Photoshop and try again.
Well, please make sure that: -You are selecting the layer you want to apply color range on it from the Layers panel. -Inside the color range window, choose "Sampled Colors" from "Select" drop down menu. -Select the color you want to remove with the eyedropper tool as seen at minute @2:05 -Change Fuzziness then click OK.
I can't seem to download the brushes into Photoshop the right way, when I try to download them it has the extension .rar not .abr, what am I doing wrong?
Hey Jessica, A RAR file is a compressed file that holds one or more other files inside it. to open it Please install "Winrar" software if you're using windows. or for Mac please install any file extractor from the app store. After extracting it you'll find the .abr brush

Make it as RGB then convert it to CMYK. make sure that your image is dark a little bit, if it is too shiny, it will not give you a good result!
hey im a beginner. Instead of only making the fire change into vivid light, and color doge, and all that. It makes the whole image that
Sounds like the brush size is way too big, easy way to change brush size is to use the 2 square bracket keys next to the return/enter key.
