  • Fletch travels to the Barossa in South Australia to visit the Steinborner Holden Dealership and catch up with Michale Steinborner, the former dealer principal.
Over the 54 years in business, the Steinborner Dealership sold an impressive 75,991 vehicles, 11,688 of which were new Holdens.
Michael, as you would expect, is a Holden man through and through. And he has amassed a collection of Holden classic cars over the years.
Starting back in 1967, through his Holden connections and customer base, Michael collected Holden Executive vehicles, one-off models, and some very original vehicles that were traded in. His collection is a bit like Holden Heaven!
Michael's collection boasts the first FJ Holden demo from back in 1954, a Monaro No.1 from 2001, and the last Magnum Ute of the 240 made.
But there's more, a HK Monaro 327 Bathurst edition acquired just three years ago with full history, this was a boyhood dream of Michaels one day to buy one.
Another HK Monaro, with a 186 motor, 4-speed transmission, LSD, wider wheels with full list of Holden accessories, today it's in original condition with no paint or mechanical repairs, an absolute classic.
The list goes on with a 1968 HK Monaro - the year Holden won its first Bathurst. A 1971 LC XU1, the first of the XU 1's, restored to its original condition. A Holden Executive HJ Holden 4-door GTS, fully optioned it sold for just $6,060 back in the day. It became an executive vehicle because it had no air conditioning. Today with 70,000 on the clock and in original condition.
A significant vehicle to Michael is his 1981 VC Commodore, second of the Commodore series, a 50-year commemorative model exclusively built for SA Holden dealers to celebrate the union of GM and Holden Motorbody Builders to become General Motors Holden Limited. This model was the first time Holden numbered limited release models. Michael's is No. 67 of 300, built-in 1967 the same year Michael started work, the stars aligned here.
Last but not least is a 1985 VK Calais, a 4.9 litre V8 with 4-speed transmission, a special order with factory sunroof, Brock wheels and suspension. Notable to Michael because it was the 1,000th new car he sold.
Michael's collection is a beautiful history of Holden manufacturing and a classic collection.

My family have bought cars from Steinborners, I bought a HJ Kingswood from the Holden Dealer that owned his Gawler branch before he bought it and friends I grew up with did their trades as mechanics and sales staff under him. Car salesmen have been shown a bad wrap in films yet in reality they are often the mainstay of a community and the loyalty they get from locals is a credit to them. Keep talking to and introducing us to these guys Fletch!

I bought a 253 auto LX torana and I was the second owner and after a couple of weeks I was giving it full detail and first notice that the dealership that it had been bought at stamped their details on the underside of the bonnet.
Showing very few people as a lot of cars were being stolen and one mate said he had only seen one other car with that when he first started his apprenticeship mechanic down Sydney and he said it was the same dealership that mine came from and when I showed my father he said he had the same stamp because he had bought his there.
Then one night while stopped out cruising around the son of the original owner stopped and started telling his 3 friends that this was his father’s car and how he was shattered his dad never let him drive it and wouldn’t even save it for him to drive.
Hearing this I went over and had a talk with him and his mates thought he was telling porky pie’s but after agreeing with things he said about it I said come for a drive and he came alone and as soon as I turned the corner asked if he had a license he did and I said jump out he asked why and I said to hard to drive from that side.
After about 30 minutes and driving back I could hear and see he was getting emotional and I asked did he enjoy that and he said he wished he got to do that with his dad but couldn’t thank me enough for what I had done and then I said I’d give them a lift to the city and on the way I said I’ll stop at a shop and go buy a pen which he did.
When he got back I gave him some paper and said write down your phone number and he did and as I was writing down mine I said now every month call me or I would call him and say if I was moving or if he was so we would always be in contact before mobile phones this was.
Hearing this he looked at me weirdly and one of his mates said what is the go with that strange don’t you think to another friend and I heard it turned around and said so he will know if or when I decide if I’m selling it and he will have the first chance to buy it and he can start saving money from today so he is able.
They all said they couldn’t believe that someone that didn’t know this person before tonight would be so nice to him just because it was his dad’s car he just stood there speechless and I said that’s why and pointed at him and said he understood why and I could understand how he felt because my best moments with my dad was ever Bathurst I was helping my dad and his best friend work on my dad HQ GTS manaro.
Five years later still in touch I sold it to him because I couldn’t store it anywhere at the time and I was working away and I couldn’t have been happier than he was when he jumped out of his mates car and ran up to the car looked in and said it’s exactly the same except the stereo system that is in it now is upgraded from the loud one I had in it last time and I said I had bought it a week ago so it sounded good and the car had just been touched every where two mates (mechanics ) thought needed to be new they had been out the night I met him so they did all the work free.
He asked me how much I was going to sell it for and I said for what I payed for it plus the new stereo and he said he couldn’t pay that amount because they were selling $15,000 and up at the time and I said it wasn’t about how much I could sell it for it was about giving someone the happiness that I had when I was driving around in it and I knew he would be the same.
He said had never told his dad about dr I t and buying it today and he was going straight to show his dad and mum and see their reaction and I said hope they all have a great time and both of his parents cried when they seen him stop and get out and how happy they were for him he came and told me couple of days after..

Got some great cars in his collection, but doesn’t disguise the fact that his Company was the worst place I’ve ever worked in in my entire life, constant harassment (in multiple forms) by a certain disgusting worker who still works for the company led me to quit from there because management would constantly turn a blind eye to it and never believe what was happening and it’s still happening to this day.
Sorry Michael, your a great guy and I respect you and your love for cars, but the people you trust to keep your company going in your absence really let your company and your reputation down 👎🏻
