I heard him in his second KISMET production in Minneapolis. He announced he was indisposed (unusual for musicals) but sang beautifully. He sang Broadway like a lieder singer. He brother sang baritone roles at the Met under the name Arthur Kent.
vaguet2, Arthur Kent was my father. He and Alfred, 8 years younger, remained close their entire lives. Alfred always said that his brother had the finer voice. True, Dad won the Met Opera Awards, while Alfred was eliminated in the second round. But although Dad had great stage presence, Alfred was mesmerizing onstage, and Dad always said so. Such dear, lovely men. I still miss them. Nancy Kent Eliot
Years after his death, Alfred Drake still "owns" the leading roles in both KISS ME,KATE and KISMET. Yes, the shows are done, but NO ONE has equaled thevocal and acting finesse he brought to each show. His closest competitorwas John Raitt - - who certainly had a great voice -but lacked that specialpanache Drake had. Needless to say, both men are sorely missed. Theyset such a high standard of performing excellence that few have ever come closeto and none have equaled.
U
Alfred Drake was unique gifted as both a singer and actor. I have yet to see anyone out there who even comes close.
Thanks for posting. I remember him @ Valley Forge Music Fair.
I loved him when I was a kid listening to music my parents played at home - show tunes on our record player. All these years later I still love him.
Such class and eloquence: Alfred Drake!
What a gentleman.
