I prefer the quartz. 1.) Thinner 2.) Lighter 3.) More nostalgic 4.) Cost 5.) Set it and forget it.
I think the cost is the most divisive especially when the automatic is about double the price. And I like mechanical watches.
Totally agree with MWC on this one. The quartz version is more in tune with the watch it is based on. The 1978 Tissot SeaStar was a quartz release, so it simply makes sense that the PRX would be as well. Especially now with the new 35mm versions that are nearly 1 to 1 replicas (dimension wise) of the 1978 Sea Star.
The PowerMatic 80 feels like a bit of an afterthought to simply satisfy watch snobs that think they are too good to wear a quartz watch.
So on one hand, you have one piece that is more in touch with it's horological roots, is an order of magnitude more accurate, requires nearly no maintenance, and is roughly 1/2 the cost. On the other hand you have a watch that has been turned into little more than an homage watch, is not nearly as accurate, costs twice as much AND basically brands you as a pillock who thinks they're too good to wear a quartz watch.
I went with the quartz and never regretted it.
I have the quartz version and absolutely love it. The 70s design style makes quartz a good choice for this particular watch in my opinion. Oh, and there's also the price difference of course 🙂
That’s a great point Andreas ! Straight outta the 70’s so it should be quartz!!!!!
Which one more durable,, quartz or automatic?
@@ridhoadeski2929
Quartz, especially with the ETA movement that features some shock protection. However I wouldn't knock either one around too much, wouldn't want to ruin the sapphire crystals or finishing. If it has to be especially durable just get a G-Shock.
It was a close call but I went with quartz blue. So glad I did. Sometimes I get a wild grass is greener feeling but majority of the time I love that I can just throw it on when I get tired of setting my autos. It's also accurate for the time period it references. I'm usually an auto fan only, but as shown there's a few exceptions. Just a beautiful watch.
Well everyone needs a quartz to set their automatics to eh? - (I also went for the blue dial quartz).
I'm gonna get the quartz model also, but waiting for green dial. My only gripe about the quartz is the seconds hand is not aligned with the seconds
The misalignment issue does not apply to all quartz PRX watches, some have no problem!
Maaaan, if these didn't have such a big case size, I'd be SOOO TEMPTED! I think either is so good looking! I kinda love the waffle dial, even tho it's a bit AP RO-ish.
Yeah! Just needs 2 mm shaved off doesn’t it!! The beauty with these watches is they will end up doing multiple textures and colours for sure! Think they are just a little too close to the RO!
Good news, a 35mm is coming soon
@@TheDonCucaracho got more of a female look to it
@@jhondeer8981 yeah but with the lug to lug, it’s more like a 37mm
@@TheDonCucaracho that doesnt help when lug to lug is the same tho
I prefer the texture of the waffle dial and I wish Tissot had gone with a linen or teak dial (or something) to give the quartz version a little more visual interest. I also agree with you that a 38mm (or even 36mm) diameter would have better suited the vintage look and feel. With the case shape and integrated bracelet, I think it would have worked even on larger wrists. (I have a 7 inch wrist.)
Absolutely with you on the texture dial colour! It would’ve distinguished itself a bit more! Yeah slightly smaller would’ve made it even better!
@@THEMADWATCHCOLLECTOR a vertical brush would look amazing. Kinda like the longines hydroconquest boutique edition. It would go super well with the case brushing.
I picked up a 40mm PRX Powermatic today! Before going into the store, I thought the 35mm would suit me best, but I ultimately favoured the 40mm. I agree, 38mm would have been perfect.
Thank you for giving the correct information about which Watch these descend from! You are one of the few that have it right!
David thank you for watching the show! Appreciate the support!
I don´t like the waffle dial of the automatic and therefore went with the quartz.
I prefer the dial on the quartz...it's nothing fancy, but definitely completes the 70's esthetic better. Combined with that bracelet, it's a winner. I have a small wrist, so yes, a 38mm probably would be perfect! Great vid, thank you!
Cheers Evan! Yeah just a little shaved off the size would make a big difference!
EARLY CREW. WE HERE!
Hahahahaha Hi Brittany ! Hope your well!
@@THEMADWATCHCOLLECTORYou're*
Quartz is the win for me as well, I just ordered mine online and can’t wait.
Yes my friend! Enjoy!!
Where did you order from and how much was it friend?
Got the green waffle auto yesterday, what a cracking watch for the money, fits my 7.5” wrist perfectly. Great channel, I appreciate the humour injection, and fast paced presentation. Keep up the good work!
Really tempted by it I can't lie. Problem is it fills zero need I have in a watch, I just like it.
Hahahaha I see that Nick !!;)
Remember Oscar Wilde: the only true way to vanquish temptation is to give in to it.
@@nobbynoris Yes, indeed. But what of vanquishing regret? lol
Both nice watches and the automatic isn’t expensive for a Swiss made watch. It was nice to see the quartz version second hand hitting all the markers.
Not sure if it’s my cup of tea but I can see the quartz option being very popular
Thanks for watching Paul!
Love the sunburst waffle dial. No worries from my side considering any RO-confusion. My only gripe would be color choices, something funkier would be great...we'll see in the future.
Great energy!
Thank you my friend! I think we can almost guarantee new colour dials coming out maybe in the Quartz first to test the waters!;)
I got the silver dial quartz PRX last year when it was introduced. I loved the vintage Oysterquartz vibe.
I'm 50/50 between these two versions 😭 Why did Tissot do such a good job? 😂
Hahahahaha if they made that auto’s dial colour a little more identifiable to Tissot I think I may have been swayed to that!;)
Agree, quartz for me too, especially given the price difference. Not keen on the waffle dial either. Great video!
Cheers Graham!
I'd love the quartz dial on the automatic!
Absolutely my friend! It’ll happen
finally i got quartz 35 MOP dial
its awesome :)
Hello mate. Both watches are stunning for the money. Hope they bring out a 38mm or even 36mm in the future.
Thanks my friend ! They know it’s a winner! I can see endless amounts of dial colours and textures! The sizes to!
Got the auto a couple weeks ago myself. Managed to bash part of the square part of the watch head... Had a go of brushing it over myself.... My god, took me forever.
Ian! Well done for doing a bit of DIY!!!!
Mr Pagani's Tory Boy energy is bringing me LIFE LOLLL
Glass half full ALWAYS!!!!
The design is inspired / reissued by they model at 70’s of tissot seastar
Not really my friend.
That chamfering on the date window quartz is much better than most framing that disrupt the design. Simple but often missed
Absolutely agree my friend!
Totally agree, the Quartz is 70s-tastic. Brilliant review as always! I generally love the simple Tissot designs (gentleman and this one), but like you, wish they were a wee bit smaller. Happy Thursday, Russell! Has Mr. Pagani discovered the magical trend of integrated bracelets yet?
Hahahaha it’s in his Arsenal for sure !!!;)
Tissot announced on their social media yesterday that a 36mm PRX is in the works. It is unknown whether it will be available in quartz, automatic, or both.
@@V3rt1g0s Fantastic news, fingers crossed for quartz!
@@V3rt1g0s oh nice. I hope it's a automatic with the quartz dial. I think the current quartz one looks way to big and yeah it's a quartz which I don't care for beyond my inox and g shocks.
Very conservative, but a perfect watch in many ways… as long as one can get a good fit. I’d take the automatic.
Thanks for watching my friend! If the waffle dial colour was different I may have gone with auto;)
Now here's a thing...I was out on the daily bike ride this morning and realized I had no milk for a cuppa so I thought I'll pop into the deli at the mall and get a carton.....well they had moved the deli and what was in it's former spot...yup a watch department and a Tissot display at the fore front....New in were 3 versions of the PRX and I had to try.....white and gold looked cheap....waffle dial was a tad gimmicky, but the blue quartz looked great......got the milk, went home and mulled over the 3 with a big mug of tea.....showered up,drove back and bought the quartz.....had to be done.
Congrats Kevin!! My choice to!!
Big difference in prices too..great show by the way..💯🇬🇧
Thanks Darren!! All the best my friend!
Quartz is not as ugly a word as they make it out to be. Heritage and build quality matter so much more than whether a watch is mechanical or not. I’d much rather a Swiss made quartz PRX over a poorly made Citizen automatic at similar price points.
I was totally not fussed when the PRX first came out but it has really grown on me, particularly when the automatic came out with that waffle dial 🧇 A pair of fun watches that seem to be doing very well for old Tissot 👍
Awesome show as ever MWC 👏👏👏👏
Cheers Gareth! What it needs is that smooth sweep you have on that Hammy before they changed it to the H50!
@@THEMADWATCHCOLLECTOR 100%! If I have to chose I much prefer a smooth sweep to a higher power reserve 🙌
between both automatic and quartz, which ones gives out the most blue hue? even at low light situations?
The quartz has a prominent sunburst to it. The best blue would possibly be the waffle auto
@@THEMADWATCHCOLLECTOR thank you man!
Thats the funniest sh*t have seen mate. You are one of a kind.👍🤣
Thanks for finding the channel my friend! Appreciate that!;)
I've tried it on and it definitely feels more like 42 mm ☹️
Great review 👍
Definitely agree my friend! But for me a wearable 42;)
@@THEMADWATCHCOLLECTOR I've found your channel thanks to TGV...
@@MaroMarenio I’ve got him to thank my friend;)
Dear MWC, are you sure that the automatic version has screw in caseback? I have found no information on this nowhere. thanks
Been trying to hold back, but then you hit me with the Arnie reissue. A favourite of mine. Subscribed. Greetings from France.
Sorry Steve but congrats also!!!;) all the best!!
Sorry for my English
I like the watch shape but I don't like the butterfly clasp if they came with new version with solar power plus normal watch clasp I will buy it today before tomorrow
Nice video thank you for the detailed review!
I own the Quartz version since march and would love to have the Powermatic 80 movement with the quartz dial 😁
Same my friend! The Quartz looks better to men
I’d still go PR100. Micro-adjustable clasp and the option of swapping straps.
SOOOPER! Glad to have you back my friend.
Cheers Mal! Hope you’ve been well!!
Love the one waffle dial but love the quartz price
Thanks for another hilarious video, very enjoyable, especially Mr. Pagani 😂
Cheers Danny!
Want to see the Tissot PRX 35mm vs Nautilus 5712 watch.
Love the waffle dial on this Tissot, it has classic written all over it, anyway, nice surprise for a Russ video drop on a Thursday evening, hope you had a good few days away with the family
Cheers Mike! Yeah was awesome! Beautiful part of the world stuck with the family!!!hahahahaha
Great video, I loved the 'how long have they been around' section 😂. I think you are right to recommend the quartz👍. It's a shame they changed the dial for the auto, and I'm not sure about the powermatic movement
Hmmm yeah it’s an underwhelming movement for me. I’m more about the sweep than the power reserve and the service intervals!
If it was smaller I'd be tempted by the quartz and I don't want to be a miserable so and so but I don't like butterfly clasps ( it's a fitment thing for me) good video as always.
Cheers John!! I wish I could’ve sized it!
I think the white dial with the rose gold bezel is an absolute beauty alot more understated and looks much better in person than the hype train blue and the white doesn't homage the AP as much either win win
It’s a great point Raz! To me it’s more of an older gentlemen’s watch that white/gold but it’s just the kind of watch my mums dad wore!!!
@@THEMADWATCHCOLLECTOR Lol
Great video. Tissot really know their market with these two.
Thanks for watching Dan!
The first watch I ever owned was a Tissot Visodate in steel. It was probably 1965 or 1966, I was 7 years old and the watch was given to me as a gift. So obviously I have a soft spot for Tissot. But these days I would have a hard time buying most Tissots because I hate that font they use on the dial so much. I think that font is awful, it's too big, and it makes their watches look incredibly cheap. In my view they should ONLY use the old script font that was (and is) so beautiful! I don't know why they changed it in the first place, but to me it's a total FAIL.
One of the reasons I bought the Visodate Frank. Totally get that on the logo!
Quartz for me, did I miss what the wife thinks? Always look forward to that. Great viewing bud. 👍🏻
Thanks Martin! As it was a comparison show it was never planned to have that segment in there! However she preferred the auto;)
Love that waffle dial. Great price. Very tempted.
It is a tempter my friend!
This is a smashing review of the watches I am considering. I tried the quartz but I am waiting on my local ad to get auto in stock!
BTW
I am new to this channel (infact this is my first video here)
Love your style! I am gonna binge watch rest of your videos
You have a new subscriber!!
Thank you so much Johnson ! Good luck trying on the Auto!!!!
I think this PRX is the best looking watch and best deal released in MANY years, for real. Its a new icon.
This is the first swiss watch in years for me, that really got me excited.
With that said, the only thing I would have liked to change with it, its the polished bezel, I would liked for it to have been brushed too like the rest of the watch :P
But this is nitpicking.
It’s a great watch for your money, that’s for sure! Slightly changing the colour to the automatic dial, so it didn’t look like a homage to the Royal Oak, would have been a better way to go!
@@THEMADWATCHCOLLECTOR Ive been thinking for this long now. And im gonna go for the quartz. The waffle is slightly too much, I like it, but.... Too much for me. The more anonymous look of the quartz, I like just somewhat more.
I got the blue quartz version and agree that it would be good to have a 36mm size. Glad you preferred the quartz too.
Automatic for me my friend! Thanks for the review.
Thanks for watching Barry!!!
Bet you are glad they have come out with the 35mm ! Also in new colours ! Also with imminent leather strap !
300 notes. Not a bad bang for the buck. Still lust after the Tudor Royal thou’ Great episode. Cheers. 👍🏴
Cheers Jim!
I’ve got the powermatic 80 in my 2021 tissot Seaster and it’s a great movement.
Very reliable, not sure you can regulate it my friend that’s all. Plus I’d personally take 40 hours power reserve for a 4 hertz sweep!!
@@THEMADWATCHCOLLECTOR yes I agree. I like the 80 hour PR I think it’s impressive and nice to know it’s there, but it’s not really essential for me at all I can’t deny 😂 Thanks for the great videos they are awesome 👏
I bought the 40m silver dial in quartz. I really like the design of the Rolex Oyster Quartz. This hits the spot for me.
Are you sure the automatic case back is screw in, because I don't see any tabs to allow using a tool to unscrew.
It is my friend but can only be opened by Tissot I believe? Maybe wring but either way you’re not getting in!
@@THEMADWATCHCOLLECTOR even Tissot are not miracle workers, able to open screw threads with no way of getting purchase on it.
Yep, quartz for me. But actually too large for my puny wrists, so thanks. Very cool though.
Yeah me too my friend! Hope your doing well! Still condensing the collection down or mass expansion?;)
Pagani - hilarious every time.
Cheers Sam! I
this man really deserves more viewers for the effort he puts into these videos, most entertaining watch channel for sure !
Thank you very much my friend! I try my best!;)
I originally got the quarts version but my ocd couldn’t handle the seconds hand not hitting the markers. With the auto I will say that it will never leave my collection. I love the face of the watch so much in the blue. Great video Russ
Cheers Phil! I’ve heard some Quartz seconds hands not hitting the markers! This one looked ok;)
I’m waiting for a salmon dial version. I emailed tissot to suggest it! And a green 😂 in 38mm
The powermatic is Lazer regulated, which will make it more difficult and expensive to maintain and repair!
Yep no regulation done by yourself
I have the automatic version. Love it.
Congrats MC! They are very nice watches!
@@THEMADWATCHCOLLECTOR Thank you.
Id rather have the Accurist versions, they are discounted at some retailers now. Ive seen the quartz at £100.00
Quartz it is …on the way…when it’s time for The Royal Oak …the little Tissot will still have a place in the collection….
Hahahahaha good shout my friend! Wear it in good health and don’t worry about dinging it and enjoy it!
Did you notice any inaccuracies with the second hand missing markers or the minute hand going in between minutes? I want to get the quartz because it's more cost-effective, but I keep reading and seeing reviews where the minute hand is in between minutes and the second hand is skipping markers
Been looking forward to this one Russell! I love the automatic but I do love my quartz one too. Just gutted that I didn't wait to get the auto. My black dial quartz is gorgeous though and I have similar-sized wrists to you and can just about get away with the size of it but it would be perfect if it was jusy a couple of millimetres smaller!
Thanks for watching Nelson! Yes agree about the size! I love the fact it’s a 70’s design and it works best with a Quartz engine!;)
Team quartz here. Would have to be the white one for me. That white date wheel ruins the blue. But even then … I think they wear a bit big for my taste.
Agree Joe!
Great review, thanks, was interested in the back to back of these. Cheers
Thanks Andrew!
Would like the powermatic in the plain dial.
Agree David! It’ll happen!
Thanks for the comparison. The RO effect on the Powermatic dial turned me off at first, but I've come to really like the additional texture/interest. It's a shame about the lume. That's one thing you don't have to worry about on a lumed Seiko (closest in feel might be the SPB167 sharp edge). I did try the quartz PRX on at an AD the other day, and it fit beautifully on my 7.25" (18.4cm) wrist. The quartz felt lighter than I am used to, so I'm not sure how I felt about that. I still lean toward the Powermatic, but they didn't have that to try on. Hopefully Tissot will offer some nice rubber straps with quick release to go on the PRX in the future. I do not know why they would go to the trouble of quick release on the bracelet otherwise.
Thanks for watching Sean! Yeah I think the plan will be to offer a selection of straps!!!
I have no doubt that more colours and textured dials will come to!!!
Hey Russ.. I tried on the powermatic version and I was a little underwhelmed I must admit. No weight to the watch at all and it left me thinking the price tag wasn’t justified.. a very attractive watch though and I can see Tissot selling bucket loads… enjoyed the episode .. Cedric “Oh for F#*+” 😂😂
Hahahah thanks Terry! I see what you mean matey! There isn’t a great deal to the construction etc! But it’s a clear design isn’t it! DISCO ERA!!!!
@@THEMADWATCHCOLLECTOR reminded me a lot of the case design of the Seiko 7a28/38 series .. which is a winner in my book 👍
Both informative and hilarious😂 ! Thankyou !
Thank you Richard! Think I need this as a testimonial!!;)
Love these reviews …. I got the quartz one and was debating the powermatic
Cheers Joe!
My Direnzo DRZ 04 is the same kind of integrated bracelet watch with a unique style dial but without this AP-esque approach. This automatic movement might be the one with this most interesting - anti magnetic - silicone balance staff - I guess. Anyway, another great vid Russ. I wonder what the wife would have chosen.
Thanks Peter! She preferred the waffle!
I tried both twice with intent to buy. I bought the Gentleman Auto the first time, and bought a Seiko 5 Pepsi the second time :) If the automatic version did not exist than I would buy the quartz and vice versa. I just could not decide between these two.
I love your videos and sense of humour!! One question though. When time comes to servicing, how does the caseback on the PM80 movement screw without any notches? I don't see how the caseback can come off. Thanks!!!
Hello my friend! This is the problem with Tissot and the Powermatic 80. It’s not designed for you and I to get into. It’s done by Tissot. It’s a drawback of the movement
@@THEMADWATCHCOLLECTOR I see. that's a bit dissapointing 😔 Thanks for the reply and keep up the good work!!
I've worn quartz watches for years and I don't think the automatic is worth 1.75x the price. A sweeping seconds hand looks nicer every time but I'd rather just buy another watch with $275.
I’m with y’Kai!!!
I hate waffle dial but after witnessing the white or ivory dial, I am tempted. Haha.
Quartz for me, sunburst clean dial so amazing 💙
Interesting, thanks Russ 👍
I've been taken with these for a while, I prefer the blue quartz and at the price, a steal. However, the lack of lume and no AR might kill it for me. Entertaining as usual. 😁
Cheers Steve!

Thanks for watching Clarence ! If they did that they not have sold the amount of Quartz watches they have done!;) they have been clever for sure!
ALL of the prx quartz ive seen have alignment issues with the seconds dial. Even the one used in this review! So thats the deal-maker there for me.
Would go for the Quartz I think :) nice vid sir!
Thanks Gordon! Hope your well!
I love the look, but could never pull it off!
YES YOU COULD MY FRIEND!;)
@@THEMADWATCHCOLLECTOR awww shucks thanks MWC.
I have the black dial powermatic 80 version and I can tell you that it looks less homage if you don’t just go for the default blue. Also, the powermatic 80 movement is probably one of if not the most accurate movements non-cosc or metas. And I saw someone mention that they don’t like the lack of weight of this watch. The weight is fine for the style of watch it is. Don’t forget this is a cross between sports and dress.
Thanks for watching and your comments George!
Great job as usual, MWC!
Thank you my friend!
Quartz all the way and 2 times on Sunday
Hey mate, another great show. I have been looking at this watch and tossing up between the two versions so great to get another view point. This was one watch I was looking forward to seeing your wife’s thoughts, always entertaining. have you cut that segment? Cheers
Thanks Tim! As it was a comparison show I never planned to have her thoughts on this. However she loved the waffle as it made the Watch look smaller and more interesting
I am sucker for the waffle dial.
Me to DS! But I felt a little dirty afterwards ! Deep down I’d prob choose the WAFFLE!!!!!!;)
I searched for blue waffle: oh god, that was not what I hoped for.
I'm not sure I can look at "PRX" on the dial without my immature mind seeing something else . Nice 70s revival watch otherwise . Reminds me of the Seikos of that era .
Hahaha nice Robert ! It’s a nice 70’s design for sure!;)
Man all the extra effects and voice changing is quite annoying I must say... I don't think Auto-Tune is necessary for a watch review
Fun innit

I wish the quartz came in the dial of the auto. The date window is framed, and the text is more symmetrical (2 lines on top and bottom). And the waffle pattern is beautiful. But I don’t need an automatic, dang it. Guess I’ll just have to wait a bit more and see what happens next. 🫤
