We can maybe categorise 6-7 players in our entire squad who are technically capable to play a possession system. But, despite the fans and the club knowing this weakness, it often gets overlooked that we just can't compete with teams on a physical level, we just cannot. I doubt any of our player fits in that "tall, strong, physical, technical, fast" category. Not saying he needs to be elite in all attributes but have sufficient ability. That's why we see this intense and good football for 25-30 mins and then we drop off. This is going to need some squad overhaul, seriously.
Also. thinking from a diff perspective, my biggest criticism for ETH would be he placed a lot of emphasis on results right from the start, instead of style. Can't blame him tbh because he wouldn't be given time to fail while experimenting. He completely abolished his plans after the 4-0 defeat to Brentford. I actually agree to the point AJ made in a previous video. Our tactics last season SUITED and PROTECTED our players. This season, even though we can admit it is because of injuries and tactical flaws from ETH, our players just aren't capable of a diff style of football. The same happened with Ole when his trademark was counter attacking football and our board got Sancho, Varane and Ronaldo which just forced him to rethink everything and basically play a diff style. Same happened with Jose in 18/19. I seriously think that we have an "identity crisis" at our club and that is what failed all the good managers we had. Solution? Stick with one philosophy and style (that's only possible if we stick with one manager whether ppl like it or not), overhaul the squad according to the profiles fit to play that style and if the current manager is failing, then buy a manager who plays a SIMILAR STYLE. We have went from Van Gaal, to Jose, to Ole to ETH who are ALL different!!
There has to be ACCEPTANCE from our fanbase that we aren't an elite club now. It's sad that most of our fans fail to understand it and ask for a new manager which will just complicate and worsen things after a string of good results for maybe 1yr at most. That is basically choosing a 1yr of honeymoon period followed by the same downfall instead of 2-3 yrs of difficult period and then have sustained success. I really hope INEOS continue to identify the actual problems at the club. There's a long long list of things which needs to be changed, VERY LONG!!

I am not a conspiracy theorist in the slightest has in the Premier league era. This amount of penalties soft penalties been given away in the last 15 minutes at such a regular succession? In that game, we hit the post. We had five penalty shout. We had 27 shots 10 shots on target and after the game is another penalty not given for us and another penalty given against us, after we beat Liverpool every single game, we have conceded last minute penalty to draw or lose a game. They have all been soft and on the flipside we had every single one of them decisions not given for us. This is happening way too regularly to not be a real thingevery

    • @chikeobiefuna3410

Yes I agree but we have to focus on what we can control. If you allow the opposition into your 18 yard too many times, you are likely to make mistakes and give out penalties whether soft or not. We have conceded 6 goals from Coventry, Sheffield and Burnley. We have only won 1 game against 3 championship or potential championship teams. This should be your major concern rather than the soft penalties.

VAR is a total mess. We shouldn’t hope to win games in soft penalties. At least not bottom of the league teams. We should put these teams away after 30 mins. The problem is we have players more concerned about their own stats. Anthony scores his first EPL goal of the season and acts as if it’s his 100th EPL goal. Garnacho being his selfish self kicking and shooting aimlessly hoping one goes in for his stats. Bruno stats padding as usual. Hojlund missing from the attack(not his fault) but offering nothing to the build up.

Can't imagine TH gave instruction to play long, he wants to play from the back. Onana made a mistake in previous game with the pass to Dalot (which Dalot should have had btw imo). This might have scared Onana a bit resorting to a long balls. I think Onana does not trust his defense either in building up and our defense is also not the strongest in possession. This will change if Onana has someone like Todibo in front of him and will already improve drastically with Martinez who he does trust and has mutual understanding and communication with

    • @iangatere6459

This could be it. But for your suggestion to work, it would also need for Utd to invest in 1 or 2 press resistant midfielders, who can drop deep to pick the ball (without being knocked off it like Erickson often is), & pass out well.
Bruno lost the ball twice in quick succession trying to pass out from deep. So he needs to be higher up, where his risky passes are less costly if misplaced; more beneficial if on target.
Also, the two behind him need to be more intense on covering ground, winning 2nd balls etc. And fairly positionally astute.
In addition to Todibo, Utd needs 2 good mids.

Normally Casemiro, but he was underwhelming this season, probably not only because he's getting older, but also his hamstring issues. Neves would be the bomb, but 103mln is too much money for one player when we need loads of new signings imo. My favorite is Angelo Stiller if we could get him for let's say 50. Fofana is also an excellent CDM and available for about 25, but he doesn't posess the passing skills of a true regista type CDM.

he absolutely wants to play it long, the team has been doing it systematically all season, he doesn't have CB pairings that push a high line and defend on the turn, and since they lack the technical players to play possession football out from the back, he wants the ball getting out quickly to the wingers to play very fast transitional football while keeping the CBs low. That's where the famous gigantic gap between midfield and defence comes from.

Great video, great analysis. For the people solely blaming Ten Hag, which of our defenders is comfortable on the ball? Dalot? Anyone else? Has Casemiro ever played on a team that is possesion based before this one? Burnley has played out from the back all of this year and that's what got them promoted from the championship last season as well. Those players are worse than ours but clearly more comfortable playing this style. Also I don't just think our CB's are slow, our midfield is slow as well. When our midfield has to push up not only does our back 4 get exposed but our midfielders do too. Mainoo and Ericksen are both on the slower side and both were crazy winded later in the match so when they pushed up Burnley were able to just play around us and get on the back 4. You can't press with slow CB's AND slow 6's and not get exposed at least a few times. As far as going long, I think we just don't have enough players that can play this system.

  • @DuskPatrol

In my opinion, it's a ludicrous idea that the manager looked at his plan progressing as he designed it to transpire and then destroys it. What's infinitely more likely is that the players on the pitch, having to make decisions in fractions of a second under emotional, physical, and psychological stress start to do things that don't align with the plan. On a more general note I think we give far too much credit to managers.
They pick the team, they set them up, they yell things from the sidelines the players rarely hear nevermind listen to. That's it.
Even in my playing days which obviously was not at 75000 stadium I couldn't hear a damn thing the manager was saying.

2min in and he stated what is really wrong with the system united it using both on offense and defense and why we are doing horrible. We are playing man to man... if we play man to man offensively and as wide as we do, when we lose control we're too spread out to to counterpress as a team and we try and defend 1v1 which we are horrible at since the backline has no pace except on the width which we've stupidly thrown up way further than needed and the mids are too spread thin to press and defend against attackers. What we should be doing if we could is control the ball in the back and suck the opposition into our half and as they press in, we create space for the forward line to run behind into or down the width. Garnacho and Hojlund are made for this and Rashy well he used to be excellent at this. We should take inspiration from di zerbi and how he coordinates his forward and wingers to create space for each other by whoever is dropping deep, and we should also take a page out of old ETH from ajax where his team was more compact and moved the ball up the pitch in a smaller area and not trying to play so expansive. Not sure if he doesn't believe in the technical level of the players but condensing the play to one smaller area and then looking for the quick switch to open space would suit us well.

  • @alexandresarr1203

Maybe it's on profile's players. Some don't have the ability to keep and carry the ball (CBs) because numerous amount of time Ten Hag told us that his 1st phase in the build up from the back is upon CBs that can hold and carry the ball (i.e Martinez). Ole once said that some players think they are better than they actually are. Some players have quality. Ten Hag style of play is based on possession with that said we need to ID the right profile of players that suit the style of play. United have been hired different manager with different style of play hence we have players with different type of profile. Misprofiling, mismanagement are one of many reasons why we can't perform adding injuries into that specially in the back 4 knowing that the back four is an important componant of Ten Hag's style of play.

I think that the players decision making is poor. We can talk about tactics all day, but on the pitch, the players got to use some composure, some awareness to know when to slow down the play and when to speed it up. Do you think Erik Ten Hag tells Bruno, right today, you should shoot from the edge of the box, so now you can score? Do you think he tells Casimiro to head the ball upwards instead of out for a corner or into the middle of the pitch?
If the players do not use autonomous thinking the manager cannot do much about it. Tactics can only play a certain role. Players have independent minds, they need to use it. This was why Jose was so pissed off at his players (particularly Luke Shaw) because they refused to take initiative on the pitch.
Yes we want to play high intensity chaotic, fluid style of play, but ETH wants some control as well, his team needs to play high intensity in particular periods as opposed to the full 90 mins. So I think the players need to take initiative to slow down the play. (instead of Casimiro pumping the balls up to the space behind the defence.)
Also, as feedback, I am not a fan of your video titles (who is to blame/ *** is to blame etc). Why are we trying to make someone the scapegoat. Look at Chelsea when their players misbehave on the pitch and fight about who should take the penalty Poch gets the blame when all he can do is name a penalty taker. We should not want this type of toxic culture. I hope you will stop trying to attribute fault to any particular person. (At least don't frame/ title your videos as such.) I would prefer breaking the videos up in positives and negatives and maybe you could conclude who has to take more responsibility in that game. I feel that where ETH failed was where he should have pulled Bruno or Casimaro aside and told them to try keep the ball sometimes instead of rushing to get to goal. The suspense is need to put mental pressure on the opponents.
I feel at Burnley your belief that going long was a manageraial tactical instruction seems speculative. I believe that the players at the front need to be taught to slow down and take their time, be more confident in their own abilities to overcome the opponents. Unfortunately Bruno (who is the most senior player, isn't the type to settle the players down.) I feel we might need a more experienced head up front.
This game I loved Anthony's desire to fight for every single ball. Granted he has been atrociously bad this season, however this game he put his heart in. Hope he can continue this form.

11:15 why we can't drop a defender or Eriksen to do the similar thing? personnel, Casemiro and Maguire are not sharp enough to risk bounce passes within the box, and Eriksen will get rammed into the ground before he could take the ball and turn to shape his body for a pass, which happened frequently in the midfield, we are severely lacking sharpness in reflexes and decision making in the defence, and the fact that the attack was mostly inexperienced youngsters who cannot convert be ruthless will not help. we need to upgrade personnel in defence and defensive midfield before expecting a base level fundamental of sustained controlled buildup and quick ball recovery on possession loss as a default base before asking tactical adjustments, even Burnley has defenders and defensive midfielders who are sharper in decision making of passing than Casemiro, Maguire, Eriksen, Varane, and Bissaka.

United was pretty decent, in fact quite good, last season when they weren't playing out from the back that much, mostly owing to de Gea's lack of ability on the ball. And we weren't pressing from the front that much either. Our gameplan was pretty simple but it suits the players actually. We were quite good playing counter attacking football with low blocks. This season, we try to play more from the back and press more from the front. It's been disastrous so far. We just don't have the right players. Ten Hag took big risks and laid his reputation on the line by insisting on a style of play he himself noted his players aren't suited for. Tactics are a minor thing when major changes are needed. You need a cohesive squad with a good dressing room culture before tactical tweaks ever become an issue. @@smsm-xb1lt let me add one more thing:
manu is 5th LEAST goals conceded and nr 12 in goals made..
still you duffs shout at onana and antony who has not even played a lot this season.
Again Bruno has created over 100 goals scoring chances and our attackers just dont use them

Ten hag doesn’t trust the wider squad and with all the injuries this season this why we see good and bad elements. A lot need to go and some more players you can carry out the instructions better. To suggest ten hag can’t make tactical changes would be wrong his Ajax side is proof. Time and patience. United created enough to win the game

UTD should just put out a basketball team, they are half-way there already. Almost EVERY time Burnley looked to attack, they seemed to swish through the field in seconds and the back four are struggling...and you are just expecting a shot to arrive: that IS the season. From top to bottom, both in and out of possession big changes are required for next season and only prayers are possible for the Cup Final: UTD seem unable to learn sufficiently in 23-24, and it's nearly over.
And ruthlessly honest, were there any UTD fans that did not expect Burnley to equalise somehow?
It was not Onana's fault that overall the game was not won, that lies not in his missed punch-contact but in the rest of the 90min!
And fans probably should get used to Casemiro's defensive slot, and hope the collective experienced game brains of the only CB duo left grow fast enough to overcome their slow legs.
At least, boring is not a word that applies to the action, just to the inability to improve. Is it a positive to speculate that if UTD could be somehow relegated, as Burnley surely will be, they would probably do well down there next year without needing to change anything.
As it is, just a few more crazy bits of breathless rushing and sliding about to go before the summer.

Arsenal City Liverpool all go long when pressed high this isn't a ten Hag or Onana phenomenon. The difference is winning the first/second balls we simply don't have the physicality, Garnacho weak Antony weak Mainoo weak Hojlund and Bruno are the only ones we have and Rashford doesn't even bother.
