    I think the new United States Marine Corps hit it out of the park with this new design. They also are “teaching” the use of the bags in a much better way. A “sleeping bag” isn’t an isolated item that you get into in your underwear. When you’re carrying everything on your back. Having a sleeping bag “thick” enough to keep you warm at -10 (which is very common here in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan)… well the bag weight and bulk is just ridiculously impractical. But the Corps now instructs the use of the bag as just a piece of the system. You are instructed to wear #1 underware, socks, and tshirt. #2 Lightweight base layers top and bottom with fleece beenie and neck gait or, #3 mid weight fleece #4 Happy suit top, bottom, and booties. This system of utilizing the insulation you are carrying allows the bag to be smaller and the insulation is more multifunctional because once out of the bag you can wear your insulation. I was a Marine Infantryman and did 22 months in combat (including the initial invasion of Iraq in 2003). I have slept in the dirt by the side of one of our LAV tires… for more nights than I could ever hope to recall/count. I’m firmly of the opinion that the bivy cover is just an amazing piece of gear and the newest version with the bug net… I wish they had that added 20 years ago. I just ordered a set of this new sleeping system to test out. From what I have researched I think it’s gonna be a marked improvement over the old system. I also like the newest version of the isomat (what we called the roll up sleeping mat… not sure why it was “iso” but that’s what it was called) with its accordion and square shape and attacked bungee cords for securing… that’s all an improvement over the old design. I hated the mats in Iraq becasue unless they were well broke in they always wanted to “roll up” into their original rolled shape which was annoying. And you could turn it upside down so the roll would be facing down but that meant your sleeping bag had to be put onto the muddy dusty mess that was the “exterior” surface when rolled. If that makes sense. Just a fun fact with the iso mat. I always wrote with a sharpie on mine the General Orders all Marines are required to know and memorize to heart… as wlll as drawing a “chess board” or checkers board on one side… so you could lay it on the ground or a cot and have a board to play a game or two. Thanks for the video.

      My friend, it's a neat system. It's a bit smaller than the MMSS (I suspect to save weight), and as you already know, the bivy in this system is the real gem. Do you have a lot of US surplus stores over there?

    I have most of the Gen3 ECWCS system issues to the Army, the USMC stuff is a little harder to find. I have layer 1silk weight top and bottom, layer 2 grid fleece top and bottom, layer 3 fleece jacket, and layer 6 Goretex Top and Bottom, as well as Boonie Hat, Fleece Watch Cap, Darn Tough Wool Socks, two pairs of Hot Weather and two pairs of ECW Cold Weather, Current Army issue combat uniform, gloves, and boots. That pretty much rounds out my clothing for outdoors/prepping. I still rock the old MSS Modular Sleep System in woodland camo. With all that gear, I can operate here in east Tennessee no issues no matter the temperature, which usually never goes below zero degrees F. Good stuff guys, there is a lack of videos on RUclips covering this topic and it's a crucial one to outdoor activities and prepping/survival. Have a good one and see you in the next one. Happy Holidays by the way.

      It's sort of the same here with those temps. We MIGHT get near zero once or twice a winter, but even then that's rare. With this gear we've been just fine down into the teens and single digits (usually overnight lows). Facebook marketplace has been a dream come true in getting a lot the USMC gear, most of the folks are willing to negotiate on price and are willing to ship. What specific glove are you using? Is it leather with inserts or something else?

    I needed a tough, dependable synthetic sleeping bag to protect my down bag and increase the combined warmth for Arctic winter temperatures (below -40°F/C). The extreme weather bag (black one) did a superb job at that.
    It is tough enough to take the harsh camp life in such conditions, and roomy enough to accommodate me (5'10" - 183 pounds) and my down bag (with plenty of room to loft). It won't retain much warmth and nope, you won't sweat, but it is a significant improvement over just my down bag (rated 0.4°F). I survived 😅😎 Thanks for the great video!

      That's excellent information! Another commenter asked a question about whether a TNF Inferno -29F down bag would fit inside of this black bag. Do you happen to know if it would?

    I’ve never served in that marine corps, but I’ve since made friends with a guy currently in the corps, we both love surplus and so far I’ve learned the corps lowkey has the best surplus like how the boonie has a wider brim than the army. And anything coyote brown is automatically cooler in my eyes 😂 love the video

    For those who use the USMC FILBE Main Pack and USMC Improved Bivy with the 3 Season and Extreme Weather Sleeping Bags, you don't have to use the Compression Stuff Sack to protect your sleep system. Just insert the Sleeping bags inside the Bivy, seal the face screen up with the enclosure then roll it tightly formed from the bottom forcing the air out, zip the Bivy closed to seal the Bivy, stuff it in the lower FILBE compartment and your done. The Bivy is waterproof protecting your sleeping bags and this eliminates the extra weight and cost of the Compression Stuff sack. I've packed it in the same way stuffing it in my Assault Pack when I don't need my Main Pack for more gear. The only reason I'd use a Compression Stuff Sack is if I knew I'd be submerging my pack in water crossings.

Not sure how much you'd need it down there but if you need to bug out in case of a refinery explosion and it's -20F you're gonna need something like this stuff. Thanks Roberts. Hey guys, very good video series you have. Can you help me a little bit ?
    Iam looking for a synthetic overbag to extend a TNF Inferno -29F down bag to lower temps, do you think the black outer bag could fit the TNF inside without mods ?

    • @robertsbushcraft
      @robertsbushcraft  8 месяцев назад

      That's a good question, @artysa.blackwood4261. The outer black bag is made to fit over the smaller three-season bag, but, I do not know if it will fit over the bag that you have. Sometimes you can find these black bags on eBay for dirt cheap, it might be worth it to buy one and test it out.

      Brand new, yes indeed! The vast majority of this gear is used and we were able to pick it up pretty cheap for the most part. For instance, the two sleeping bags were 19.99 a piece because they had a tear in the fabric (easily repaired and fully functional), the bivy (a real gem) was also 19.99 because it had a tear in the face net (easily repaired and fully functional). There are deals out there!
