iron sight calibrated to 1200m. PSO-1 scope calibrated to 1300m. Max range : ~5800m. Useful range against human with PSO-1 : 600-800m, with 1P21 : 1000m, with night scope 1PN58 : 300m, 1PN93/100 : 500m. without scope : 300m.
the SVD IS a rifle meant for accuracy, often in a sniping manner. the PSL of which i think you are thinking of, is a big ass ak, and holds the title of being a DMR ( which can be any larger than stranded cal rifle used mostly in semi-auto for better shot placement in open combat ). this is the first time ive come across this in this way, its mostly the other way around. how odd.
but, lets be honest here, its a rifle, that shots a 7.62x54r. that's, for the most part an accurate round. almost any rifle firing it ( or just about any other full power rifle cartridge for that matter ) is suitable for well aimed shots.( well not all rifles are but we should all know by now which rifles they are ). so the point being, a rifle in good hands goes far beyond any title placed on them.
@virus922 because, like the SAM-R or M14 DMR, it is just a rifle outfitted with a scope for longer range shooting (DMR) the M21 is also considered a DMR and not a sniper the VSS is just the AS val with a different stock and a smaller magazine. We can go on hours discussing the difference between a DMR and a sniper but to end it now, yes the M21 is an M14 upgraded for accuracy but that doesn't mean the M14 isn't still used as a DMR (both the M14 EBR and M21 EMR are still used as DMRs and the)
VSS are short range (up to 400 meters) silent sniper rifle while SVD are normal sniper rifle (range- about 1200 meters). You can't compare them. I preffer AS "Val". It's very steady assault rifle and same good sniper rifle in one. Just add scope!
@virus922 DMR is the line between dedicated sniper and assault rifle, its sort of the compromise between the two, DMR's are meant for squad combat (like the SVD, SVU, and VSS) whos range is below the standard sniper but longer than the AR. Snipers work alone and are meant for shooting at 1000m and above, DMR's are 600m to 1000m. look it up for more info
Mr Sheepie Actually, a number of russian arms manufacturers want to export but we have one big problem, well 2. 1) Obama and 2) Politics (922r). Obama banned Kalashnikovs to "punish russia." Pfffft. He concocted it with Feinstein. They are determined to ban firearms.
Mr Sheepie Yeah. that too. There are also export laws. Don't know about that, but it may have to due with Russian laws. I'll need to look into it but I'd have to assume that if they had the chance and could expect gain they would. --- Take Germany's HK. They want to give us what we want but German laws prevent them from doing it. We blame it on corporate pettiness but at the end of the day, they can't because German firearm laws affect hk even if they are in the Us.
Mr Sheepie Russia actually comercialized the 107 (recoil compensated AK). a rep. confirmed it (courtesy of a Militaryarmschannel interview) Kalash Concern want to sell to us but the retardedly petty laws prevent them. They know how much we want AK and Dragunov.
Mr Sheepie hey, check out two river arms. they have accurate psl and tabuk sniper black horse arsenal has conversion kits but don't know about if they are gtg
@virus922 well its more of a compromise but you get the point but they still can be used for "sniping" just you know... not as good as dedicated snipers like the SV98, KSVK, barret m107, or the cheytac m200
@virus922 Yeah I'd also like to correct myself, when I said sniper I meant DMR because thats what its used for today, the VSS is also used as such (sort of).
@Smudge1088 I did not insist that. Read again. Of course the SVD is more accurate and has different parts. I never said anything different. So where is our Speznats specialist to tell us the truth? Maybe there are different ways to call it. Like it is considered a sniper in Russia, but Western Military would call it a DMR? Whatever. SV-98 is true sniper rifle.
@atepiro bullshit, latin transcription of cyrillic letter B is V. At least in english, spanish and french, W maybe for some eastern languages with latin alphabet like polish or whatever.
Yeah sure i want to see the person who shoots a target at 1200m with iron sights ; It´s damn hard to even see someone at these distances if camouflaged, not speaking about hitting. And Wiki says a lot ; 800 meters if experienced shooter i´d say. 1200 meters if chuck norris.
I had a chance to fire an SVD when I was stationed in Iraq. Not alot of recoil and it is HIGHLY accurate.

Effective range: 800m
Maximum range: 1,300m with scope, 1,200m with iron sights

Remember kids: in russian there are no V letter! So, the correct names are SWD, and WSS.
atepiro the letter "в" can mean "w" and "v" in english alphabet.. so it is correct to say it VSS.. WSS sounds more Polish..
Too bad these were banned from importation into the US back in the 90's, the few that made in before the ban are worth a mint...
@virus922 technically the M14 is still considered a sniper and is capable of full auto.
Man, while I love both of these guns, I do have a slight preference for the VSS, the one my country doesn't allow :(
VSS are short range (up to 400 meters) silent sniper rifle while SVD are normal sniper rifle (range- about 1200 meters). You can't compare them. I preffer AS "Val". It's very steady assault rifle and same good sniper rifle in one. Just add scope!

I want that! Heck, I've always wanted that.

It's ridiculous. Someone should import the dragunov and this vintorez. They would sell, guaranteed.

@ralfis1234 SVD is not a sniper rifle. It is a DMR = Designated Marksman Rifle. Godspeed already told you about the range.
Best weapon to take out small groups of monolithians, for sure!
Its something between those two. Not exactly DMR. Even in the name SVD means Snayperskaya Vintovka Dragunova (Dragunov's Sniper Rifle).
@virus922 well its more of a compromise but you get the point but they still can be used for "sniping" just you know... not as good as dedicated snipers like the SV98, KSVK, barret m107, or the cheytac m200

@1987jkilla Снайперская винтовка Драгунова (Snayperskaya Vintovka Dragunova) directly translates to Dragunov's sniper rifle.
@Smudge1088 by definition, it is a battle rifle.
Lawl, 1200 meters with svd? irl or in a video game?
@Deadman1709 amen
@Smudge1088 I did not insist that. Read again. Of course the SVD is more accurate and has different parts. I never said anything different.

Love the vss
@1987jkilla SVD can hit man sized targets at 1000 meters, I think it's a sniper
a sniper is in the person, not the rifle. looks like showing off your info back fired
Well, a little over 800 meters if the shooter is well trained.

its not effective range its maximum range! it doesnt mean you will hit the target...
but it works as a DMR; and it is given to Marksmen, not to sniper ;)
@virus922 well yeah...
Yeah!! Call of Duty!! YEAH!!!!
LATIN alphabet,not english!!
Get out of here stalker.
peafowl753 nope
I do respect Russia, and I know that they can handle stuff.
