This performance was 1978 November 13: Bini's Met debut, the first of his 3 Met Don Josés, & the only Carmen performance he sang with Obraztsova. It was the 1970s Gentele/Igesz/Svoboda production that Bernstein originally conducted (Patané conducts here, and brilliantly at that). I've found an audio recording of this performance, but who knew that film cameras were rolling?! Might the whole performance exist?! Thank you for these tantalizing excerpts!!
@fil di voce 1978-1979 was, in fact, quite a busy season for Elena Obraztsova at the Met. (She had made her Met debut in 1976-1977, singing at the pre-season Met Marathon fund-raiser concert, then 8 fall performances as Amneris in AIDA with Kord conducting and 4 spring performances as Dalila in SAMSON ET DALILA with Ehrling conducting. She also sang at the pre-season Met Marathon in October of 1977.) In October of 1978, she sang five performances as Charlotte in Massenet's WERTHER, with Placido Domingo in the title role, Dominic Cossa as Albert, Betsy Norden as Sophie, and Italo Tajo (4 performances)/Mario Bertolino (5th performance) as Le Bailli, with Julius Rudel (Met debut) conducting. Then, in November of 1978, she did, indeed, sing five performances as CARMEN, all five with James Morris as Escamillo and Leona Mitchell as Micaela, with Giuseppe Patane conducting. Guy Chauvet sang Don Jose in the first three performances; then Carlo Bini for one; and then William Lewis in the fifth performance. (I wonder if the spoken dialogue was still used instead of the recitatives this season? I know that Bodo Igesz was still directing the production this season, so maybe so.....) And then, in March and April, Obraztsova sang at the Met Marathon fund-raiser concert (an aria each from LA PERICHOLE and ADRIANA LECOUVREUR) and then sang Adalgisa in eight performances (including the broadcast) of Bellini's NORMA, with Marisa Galvany (1st performance)/Shirley Verrett (all other performances) as Norma, Carlo Cossutta as Pollione, and Paul Plishka (first 4 performances)/John Macurdy (last 4 performances) as Oroveso, with Peter Maag conducting. After that, Elena Obraztsova returned to the Met 4 times: in 1987-1988, 3 fall performances as Azucena in the then-new production of IL TROVATORE, with Richard Bonynge conducting; in 1990-1991, as Ulrica in the first 6 performances of the new Piero Faggioni staged and designed production of UN BALLO IN MASCHERA, with James Levine conducting; in 2000-2001, as Grammy in 6 performances (including the broadcast) of the new production of Prokofiev's THE GAMBLER, with Valery Gergiev conducting ; and in 2001-2002, as Madame Akhrosimova in 6 performances (including the broadcast) of the new production of Prokofiev's WAR AND PEACE, with Valery Gergiev conducting.
