    A lady had upper eyelid blepharoplasty 10 days ago and noticed that her left eyelid was more swollen and looked different from her right eyelid after the surgery. The swelling has gone down, but the eyelids still don’t look the same, so she wants to know if this is ptosis.
    New York oculoplastic and reconstructive surgeon Amiya Prasad, M.D. reviews her concerns in this video, and explains how differences in eyelid height may have been there prior to surgery, but is only noticed now due to scrutiny after surgery, but it is important to allow healing to fully resolve before determining if this is indeed ptosis:
    1:26 - Dr. Prasad details his background training in cosmetic oculofacial plastic and reconstructive surgery, as well as his experience as an eyelid rejuvenation specialist
    2:09 - How people tend to scrutinize themselves even more closely than before post-surgery
    2:51 - Dr. Prasad shares how often he follows up with patients after surgery in order to monitor progress
    3:19 - How there is a natural difference of 1-2 millimeters between both eyes in terms of height; and the importance of checking pre-operative photos to compare
    4:06 - The possibility of mild ptosis present prior to surgery becoming more accentuated after eyelid surgery
    4:37 - Dr. Prasad talks about the wound healing process and the importance of allowing healing to fully transpire before making determinations about ptosis
    5:56 - How patients can look good a week after surgery, but that it is important to allow at least 6 months to pass to discuss possible revision options
    6:28 - The importance of reviewing before and after photo
    6:54 - Dr. Prasad’s recommendation

    I’m almost two weeks post op and I emailed my surgeon today with the same concern that one incision seems lower than the one on the other eyelid. They said to be patient as well as it’s still early stages. Thank you for explaining that the 1-2mm difference is normal. As always, very informative.

      You're welcome, imbrigita. The incision position will likely change as temporary swelling resolves. Thanks for watching!

    HELLO DR. PRASAD, I NEED YOUR HELP PLEASE 🙏🥺
    SO I HAD MULTIPLE COSMETOLOGY SURGERIES DONE, BELPHAROPLASTY, FACE LIFT, RHINOPLASTY AND ADENOECOTOMY.
    ANYWAY REGARDING MY EYE LIDS. I HAVE VERY SEVERE NUMBNESS IN MY LEFT EYE PLUS I FEEL LIKE IT DOESNT SHUT ALL THE WAY DOWN WHEN I WANA SLEEP, EYELID SEEMS A LITTLE BIT DROOPY COMPARING TO THE RIGHT EYELID, RIGHT EYE CAN CLOSE PERFECTLY. SINCE DAY 1 RIGHT AFTER SURGERY I HAD SEVERE PAIN, BRUISING AND NUMBNESS IN LEFT EYE MUCHHH MORE THAN RIGHT EYE, AND EVEN WHEN I PLACE ICE I CANT FEEL THE ICE ALL THE WAY UP TO THE SAME LEFT SIDE OF FOREHEAD! SO STIFF AND NUMB! ITS SO BADLY NUMB THAT I EVEN COULDNT OPEN IT. NOW TODAY IT GOT A LIL BIT BETTER BUT STILL A LITTLE DROOPPIER BY MAYBE AROUND 2-3 MMs MORE THAN THE RIGHT EYE PLUS AS I SAID, STILL CANT SHUT IT ALL THE WAY DOWN WHEN I WANA SLEEP. I GOT SURGERY DONE 5 DAYS AGO. IS THIS A SIGN OF PTOSIS? OR MAYBE SOME NERVE DAMAGE? MY EYELID IS SO STIFF AND ALIL DROOPY AND MY FOREHEAD IS SO STIFF AS WELL, DR. I REALLY FEEL LIKE CRYING IM SO WORRIED. I PAID A FORTUNE TO GET THESE PROCEDURES DONE. WILL MY EYELID CONTINUE BEING DROOPY? OR IS THERE A CHANCE IT WILL STRETCH OUT? STITCHES ARE STILL THERE BUT THEY DONT LOOK SO GOOD NOW, SO AS YOU CAN IMAGINE IM REALLY SOOO WORRIED AND SAD THAT I MIGHT NEED A CORRECTIONAL SURGERY 💔 IS THERE ANYWAY TO FIX THIS OR TO BE SURE ABOUT IT..? PLEASE HELP, IM SO WORRIED.. THANK YOU! 🥺✌🏽

      Hi komood,
      Sorry to hear about your problem. I hope you understand that a proper second opinion requires a physical examination. Difficulty in eye closure is most often due to a skin shortage. Sometimes eyelid ptosis is mistakenly treated by excising eyelid skin, when the cause is actually the muscle that lifts the eyelid, not the skin. I would have to examine you for a diagnosis, and to make specific recommendations for you. In the meantime, you can refer to these videos on the potential complications of upper blepharoplasty, and how the risks of upper eyelid surgery are minimized and managed:

    I am getting ready to have a medically necessary upper eyelid surgery. Thank you for this and all the other great videos you have posted. They are so informative and helpful. I wonder if your office ever talks about nutrition for patients to assist the healing process. So many people are vitamin D3 deficient and do not know it even if they go regularly to a primary health doctor. I know how important this vitamin is for health as I tested very low 6ng. about ten years ago and it was affecting my thyroid and blood pressure. This is just one thing to consider. I wonder if patients realize how sugar and seed oils (corn, canola,soy) also affect healing.??

      Hi Debbie J. ,
      Thank you for watching! I am actually a healthy advocate who is very much into wellness, nutrition, and supplementation, and I do discuss these with my patients prior to and after their surgery for optimal healing. Nutrition and wellness can be a hot button topics on social platforms, so I prefer discussing these personally with patients. I hope this clarifies things for you.

    Hello sir. I want to know that finasteride is dangerous to health. I'm taking finasteride since 1 and half years.

    • @AmiyaPrasadMD
      @AmiyaPrasadMD  7 лет назад

      Hi A.Anand,
      If you have had no issues with finasteride over the 1.5 years you've been using it, then you should have no problem. Finasteride is generally safe to use. Clinical trials, and my own clinical experience show that less than 2% of finasteride patients develop side effects, and my few patients that had them returned to normal function after stopping the drug. I hope this helps you.

    Hello,
    I have had upper blepharoplasty surgery around two years ago and at the beginning of this year, I have felt small sharp pains in my left eyelid. After a while, the fold would sometimes not completely crease on some days. My surgeon says to just do some eyelid exercises but it is uncomfortable. Would this be a sign of ptosis? Thank you.

    • @AmiyaPrasadMD
      @AmiyaPrasadMD  3 года назад

      Hi R. K.,
      Eyelid ptosis is not associated with pain, so I would have to physically examine you to determine if there is another problem affecting your eyelids. I hope this helps you.

      Hi Chamman Ishfaq,
      I would have to diagnose your eyelid ptosis, and its extent before making specific recommendations for you. You can refer to this more recent video on how we diagnose, and treat eyelid ptosis - ruclips.net/video/7gWSjQce3DQ/видео.html

      Hi Alina G,
      Yes, it is possible to have upper blepharoplasty if you have glaucoma as the surgery won't affect your eye condition. I hope this clarifies things for you.
