I was born and raised a Catholic and did 13 years in Catholic schools. Even way back then we were not taught that Genesis was literal. We did bible stories when really little but as soon as proper schooling started we were taught about science and how the bible should be looked as a way ancient people made sense of the world and how they should live their lives. This creationist thing seems like an American phenomena that's been exported to the christian world.
That's due to a difference in religion. Catholics have sources outside the bible like saints and the Pope, while the different branches of protestant Christianity only rely on the bible and their interpretation of it. And of course if your only source of knowledge of God is the bible, then the bible cannot be wrong or else the very foundation of your belief falls apart.
@@vegeta4693214 Interesting. I guess a lot also depends on the pope at that moment but nevertheless I can't imagine Catholics ever going back to the bad old days of "fire & brimstone" and heretic hunts.
@@shegocrazy Because catholics have hierarchy. A single priest can go crazy and ask to go back to witch hunts, but the church would reject him. On the other hand, a Baptist pastor can go crazy and do the same, but there isn't any higher pastor to tell him he's nuts.
Cultural context of each book, knowledge of how it has morphed over time, context of what was trying to be told at the time it was written. Context is essential in understanding ancient stories as the mindset of storytelling itself has changed dramatically over time. For example, if you read myths from The Egyptian Book of the Dead, they are using storytelling to explain the existence of the physical world through metaphor. If you had no understanding of that, and read it, it would just seem like a bizarre drama about incest and sibling rivalry.

C'mon. Can't we live in a fantasy world? Kinda like Genesis. In my fantasy world Kent is actually watching these full videos and they are slowly unravelling his world view. Let me have this... ❤ don't mess with my happiness 😋
I'm Catholic, and I know that for about the last several hundred years most serious Catholic scholars have been very honest with their understanding of sources and meanings of the most ancient parts of the Old Testament and this Doctor is very spot on, totally. The Catholic Church accepts Genesis 1 and 2 as metaphorical and accepts modern theories of Cosmological and Biological beginnings and formations. Hence, why I love alot of channels like this one and am still a Christian.
I appreciate that Dr. Ehrman can draw a distinction between "Truth" and "Meaning." Both concepts have relevance to our existence as humans, but they are neither synonymous nor interdependent.
Emma ; you are intelligent and come across fantastically . 27 yrs old and so far more learned than other weak people . Good luck to you and your life style . Keep it up ,,, well worth listening to . 😘
Great video. I think Genesis is interesting because it's essentially the point at which the Christian worldview diverges from all the other world views. I grew up in an atheist household in an area where religion wasn't very visible, and I still remember the moment it all made sense to me. I was about 7 years old, and we were learning about all these different "Earth: origin stories" in school. One story was that the universe was birthed from a turtle, which to me seemed obviously wrong, and just an attempt for people to fill in the blank for the big question of why am I here. Next up, God created Adam in the Garden of Eden, then created a Eve from one of his ribs. I realized that this to, was simply AN answer instead of THE answer, just like the turtle story. Love your content, I listen while doing menial labour around the farm.
Yeah, the most interesting thing about it is that, much like Noah vs. Gilgamesh, there is a "prior" version, which is word for word, the same, save that it places humans as being made last, and caretakers, to that the "gods" *plural* could all rest and not have to deal with running their creation and doesn't include the whole silly nonsense with a tree and a snake, or.. two trees, no snake, and two wives, the first one of which was a) not created from a rib, and b) was the entity that tempted Eve. Almost like they have, and still do in modern times, take things other people made up (or even real events), and spin them to fit their warped narrative. Its like if someone today decided to rewrite Lord of the Rings, then claim that, "No, in fact my version is the true original, and it really is the orcs that are the heroes, not hobbits, and the elves really are the bad guys, not some weird guy with a magic ring! How dare you suggest otherwise!!" - and then some cult arose, insisting that this version is the real one, and everyone needs to believe it. Quite silly, if you know these things, but totally reasonable, if you have only read the "new version".
The bible is OBJECTIVELY TRUE as we speak. Jesus loves you! Call upon the Lord Jesus Christ and thou shalt be SAVED! Your life is precious! Get a king james bible and believe. Read Matthew. Read 1 John 4.
@@MichaelAChristian1 Ok. 1) Why the F would I want the version explicitly created by kings to get around previous prohibitions against things like divorce, and 2) why the F do none of you people ever read any part of it that isn't new Testament? Or, for as Aron Ra recently said, actually try "reading" the Ten Commandments, never mind understand them (the later being a pre-requisite for realizing that a) they only actually talk about two things - property, and god being really annoyed if you believe in someone else, and b) there where 3 different versions of them? As for "objectively true", what the F does that even mean, and do you understand it any more than you do the actual book itself? Because.. to quote a character from Princess Bride, "You keep using that word. I do not think it means what you think it means." Also.. why is it that people like you *always* assume that none of us have read your favorite mistranslation, or the right parts of it, and that INCLUDES discussions about the parts you insist we somehow, totally, and utterly, missed reading? The arrogance, and pride, and disrespect in such an assumption.... would make Jesus, if he really was who you think he is, weep.

The best that the 21st century has offered to the science of history studies, religious studies and folklore studies is Bart Ehram. That is why we should only listen to and read Ehram’s lectures and papers, not anyone else’s. Anyone who has at least read Ehram’s blogs knows how good he is and I don’t think anyone else has to challenge Ehram. And I’m not kidding, Ehram is really superior in his own field of science. And the fact that Ehram is so popular and so genius proves that Ehram is right in his opinions. And that’s an even bigger reason why we should only listen to Ehram on this subject. And therefore, on the other hand, it is good that there are even some smaller universities that reject the studies of all other scholars except Ehram in their teaching. And that's how it should be. In this debate, too, Ehram proved why, by far.
please don't use the word "should" and "only", this just invites worshipping and dogmatism. It doesn't mean we should put B iblical apologists on the same level as he does, but we shouldn't discount scholars more accurate than he does to exist in the future.
Excellent video Emma, I love you more each time... I think you are a delight to listen to. I particularly like that you have reduced the length of your videos to a more digestible 15-20 min. Greetings from Colombia and cheers!
Ehrman's doctorate is in bible studies, from a seminary. He's not a 'real doctor' like, for example, someone with a PhD in History from a real university department.
@@Grim_Beard Ancient languages rather than bible studies, and that seminary is accredited, unlike the diploma mill where Kent bought his phoney diploma. He is certainly more of an academic than Kent will ever be.

Good way to start/pick up a nasty day that didn't start well. Thanks for the video. :)
You can tell this will be good because they both have awesome sweaters
This is one of my favorite Ehrman discussions so far. You're an excellent interviewer, Emma!
Context is essential in understanding this stuff. Love it. Hope you do more like this.
Do you mean context of the book of genesis to ancient Israelites?
Cultural context of each book, knowledge of how it has morphed over time, context of what was trying to be told at the time it was written. Context is essential in understanding ancient stories as the mindset of storytelling itself has changed dramatically over time. For example, if you read myths from The Egyptian Book of the Dead, they are using storytelling to explain the existence of the physical world through metaphor. If you had no understanding of that, and read it, it would just seem like a bizarre drama about incest and sibling rivalry.
@@thetypingape2073 What is the CONTEXT of those verses written thousands of years ago and are OBJECTIVELY TRUE AND YOU HAVE SEEN IT COME TO PASS. You live in the year of our Lord Jesus Christ 2022 by a 7 day week as FORETOLD! Jesus loves you! Your life is precious! Call upon the Lord Jesus Christ and thou shalt be SAVED!
Just purchased Dr. Ehrman's course 1 minute ago! So excited!!! Thanks Dr. Ehrman and Emma!
Lovely interview Emma, thanks. Bart's passion and enthusiasm is wonderful, engaging and contagious!
What an amazing interview! Love Dr. Ehrman
I very much enjoyed this discussion. I love creation myths and what they tell us about cultures.
Wow Emma,it didn't take Hovind long to respond to this video. He must have one of his minions constantly checking your channel. Great vid, keep up the good work.
C'mon. Can't we live in a fantasy world? Kinda like Genesis.
In my fantasy world Kent is actually watching these full videos and they are slowly unravelling his world view.
Let me have this... ❤ don't mess with my happiness 😋
Thank you for interviewing Bart Ehrman!
You have the most beautiful voice I have ever heard! I wish Apple had a setting on the iPhone for Siri’s voice to be “ the Emma Thorne”
Thank you for the interview, the link to the course and for all your amazing content.
Fantastic! Bart's work and Tim O'Neill's History for Atheists really helped me out.
So envious you got to speak with Dr. Ehrman!
Holy Shit ive been binge watching this guys lectures/debates recently, they're really fascinating and entertaining!
Emma ; you are intelligent and come across fantastically . 27 yrs old and so far more learned than other weak people . Good luck to you and your life style . Keep it up ,,, well worth listening to . 😘
I'd love to see a group discussion video with Emma, Stephen (Rationality Rules), Drew (GM skeptic), and Paul (Paulogia).
Totally didn't see this collab coming-awesome!!
Wow, what a get, well done. I love Ehrmans work.
I do not think it means what you think it means."
Also.. why is it that people like you *always* assume that none of us have read your favorite mistranslation, or the right parts of it, and that INCLUDES discussions about the parts you insist we somehow, totally, and utterly, missed reading? The arrogance, and pride, and disrespect in such an assumption.... would make Jesus, if he really was who you think he is, weep.
@@MichaelAChristian1 Did you expect this to work?
@@j.c.5528 If you are HONEST enough to ANSWER? If you NOT honest enough then you ADMIT you are deceived. Ye shall KNOW the TRUTH and the TRUTH shall make you FREE! Jesus loves you!
Just found your channel! Ironically, I'm in the midst reading Dr. Ehrman's book "God's Problem" regarding suffering and the biblical view. Fantastic interview! Already loving your content!
Wow just blown away you were able to interview him! Epic! And I have been wanting to take a course by him!
Ahh!!! I love that you were able to chat with him! So exciting
So jealous you had a chance to chat with Dr. Ehrman; I've learned so much from him, taken a few of his online webinars. Will seriously consider this course as well. Thanks Emma, for a great job! Subscribed and looking forward to more from you.
Excellent questions. You made the interview sound like a conversation. Alot of preparation must have been put into this video.
omg I'm so excited you had Bart Ehrman on your channel! I love his books! His research has helped me so much!
He’s a really interesting guy. His backstory is an impressive study of growth and exploration.
Bart Ehrman was one of the first few voices that led me to change my thinking on the Bible.
We love Bart and listen to his weekly podcast with Megan 👍😍😎
Excellent video Emma, I love you more each time... I think you are a delight to listen to. I particularly like that you have reduced the length of your videos to a more digestible 15-20 min.
Greetings from Colombia and cheers!
You can always tell a _real_ Doctor.
You mean his thesis doesn't start with "Hello, my name is Bart Ehrman"?
Ehrman's doctorate is in bible studies, from a seminary. He's not a 'real doctor' like, for example, someone with a PhD in History from a real university department.
@@Grim_Beard Ancient languages rather than bible studies, and that seminary is accredited, unlike the diploma mill where Kent bought his phoney diploma. He is certainly more of an academic than Kent will ever be.
@Grimbeard his PhD is from Princeton Theological Seminary and is focused on the New Testament as an ancient text. He’s every bit a “real” academic and scholar (e.g. doctor)
Are they the ones with the script pads who insist you get jabs ? Those guys ,?
Seeing her videos each week gives me so much joy
Thank you for setting this up. It is an amazing thing to see.
Did not expect this to ever happen! This made my day! Love both of you
A great vid and a swell guy! Dr. Ehrman's perspective on and enthusiasm over the topic is refreshing to say the least and definitely a palette cleanser considering certain other videos talking about Genesis.
Emma might be a new favorite youtuber lol ive watched a lot of the backlog now.
Thanks for this conversation.
It's just amazing to me that some people can believe in Biblical inerrancy or a literal interpretation of the Bible given the many, many contradictions.
Emma you've gained another subscriber! You're unique honestly!
Well done getting Bart on! I love his analysis.
It's lovely to witness and intelligent conversation happen thank you!
Love the video! He's one of my favourite Bible scholars! Well, that was a massive nerd phrase. Anyways, thanks for the lovely video
Hi, Emma! I recently subscribed to your channel, and I got to know about you from the last episode of "Truth Wanted". Love your accent, by the way! You're charming, and your content is delightful. Thanks for bringing in Dr. Bart Ehrman!!! I'll be checking out his books as soon as possible. 😃
I can't tell you how relieved I am to see you, as the interviewer, not going "oH WOW, mmhMM"
Made me laugh imagining you responding to Dr. Ehrman like Girl Defined does with their guests.
Loved that - you asked all the right questions of an interesting chap.
What's great interview! Also, how exciting that you got to do this!
You're really blowing up, Emma!
Thanks Emma, now I have a new reading list to get through.🤣🤣🤣😂😁 Very good stuff. My wife had the pleasure of attending a talk he gave at her work.
Genesis was one of the first WTFs I had that eventually led to atheism
Now I have to ask...what field does your wife work in that allows her to attend Bart Ehrman lectures as part of the job? I want that job lol!
@@chewyjello1 She works for NPR and it was more of a presentation rather than a lecture. He was on a book tour. One of the best parts of working at NPR is their tiny desk concerts. Musicians that come in for interviews are invited to do a short performance for the staff. Most agree.

Emma great interview today . You have become one of my favorite. !
You could really see your enthusiasm to have him as a guest!
Love you Emma and all your videos! You are such a ray of sunshine.
Hi Emma, great interview, Bart is such a wonderful scholar and writer, and you are a gifted interviewer. Keep up the great work
Loved this. Immediately subscribed and got Bart's class. It's currently in an unedited form without slides, and it's still fascinating. I've been fighting nutbar theocrats for 40 years, and I still learned dozens of things about the OT that I hadn't known before.
Excellent episode! So interesting, so engaging... great content thank you :)
Thank you for this broadcast! And being honest, I read the bible from early age on. One thing i never did, was taking it literally. Even at young age realizing it is most of the part about morals and rest is some kind of a nice story. Even realizing the story contradicting itself at times.
Keep on doing stuff like this, and Bart is good, too!
Hey Emma, I just found your chanel, why didn't I see it earlier??? ^^
Amazing guest, amazing host!!! Thank you for this video! =)
Your smile makes me smile, thank you for the positive vibe :)
All the best from Germany!
This is a great show Emma. You are on the way up girl!
Should be interesting if I'm remembering correctly; "Genesis contradicts Genesis" 😁
If I were on a long distance plane trip and these two were in the seats next to me, that would be the best trip ever. This was a real treat.
Wow, Bart Ehrman! What a boon for you. Great job on this interview. Love your channel.
