Yes, my entire family deals with ADHD to some degree, each manifesting itself differently, often depending upon their personalities and structural boundaries within their environments. Caffeine is a godsend to us, and when my kids were very young and still being closely scrutinized by us care providers, their doctor and teacher allowed me to fill their water bottle with Mountain Dew (due to its caffeine content) to drink at school so long as it wasn't see-through so the other kids wouldn't fuss about not getting Mountain Dew. Except for my daughter, we all find it usually impossible to hear and respond to an alarm in the morning, and I've found that drinking alcohol (a depressant--opposite of stimulant) before bed somehow makes me sleep less deeply, usually enough to hear the alarm clock. Another interesting fact is that there's a chemical in liquid Nyquil (not the capsules) that forces me to stay awake all night long instead of sleeping, which is backwards, too. Neurologists and sleep specialists thought I had some type of narcolepsy, but they couldn't spot it on test results, and my youngest son (whose ADHD symptoms are worse than everyone in the family, even me, and who drew the picture in my profile when he was only six) always sleeps way too much--so much that I really can't consider him his actual age because he's spent so much more of his life sleeping than others his age. If anyone hears anything that might help people like me understand more about these seemingly idiosyncratic scientific perplexities, please leave word (with links or resource info, if possible) below. Thanks so much!

    • @multuminparvo5
      @multuminparvo5 8 лет назад +9

Not sugar, though. We don't see significant changes with sugar outside of a tendency to be hypoglycemic from time to time, so it doesn't seem to be associated with ADHD. We all also tend to have low blood pressure and postural hypotension whether we're on high or no doses of stimulant medication, in case that's significant.

In the late 1980s, I went a full thirty days without caffeine: No Coke, no chocolate, no coffee, no tea, no processed foods, which may contain hidden caffeine.
Well, the second day, I got this terrible migraine headache, but that went away completely on the fourth day.
After that, I had this intense feeling of peace and tranquility. I would go to bed at around 11pm and wake up at 6 or 7am, feeling completely rested.
Before this experiment, I thought that it was normal to wake up completely exhausted, fatigued, and ass-dragging. That was the effects of the caffeine, I learned.
My stress level went down so low that I felt like Mr. Spock. I was so tranquil, so serene. Utter calmness of body, mind, soul and spirit pervaded my essence.
And then, after thirty days, I goed, "One Coke won't hurt," and I've been back on the caffeine train ever since.
I think that caffeine is addictive.

More than two months ago I had huge problems with my stomach. The result is:I haven't drank coffee more than two months! Not one cup of coffee, not one sip of coffee. True story. Unlike others who say they are not drinking coffee anymore, they are not addicted and they pose with "No coffee" sign next to them, and then they change their minds and drink coffee again,I'm gonna say I'm not one of those people, what I say,I fulfill and when I say no coffee,I mean it and I do it. I'm not changing my mind. The thing is when I saw what kind of problems coffee makes for my stomach it wasn't a problem to stop drinking it and the will power to do that was and is still high. I'm not saying that a thought of drinking never crossed my mind or something, but everything is matter of habit-I was used to drink it,now I have another habit-not drinking it,and I can say that I function very well without it. I don't understand why people have so much trouble on giving up on coffee when they obviously can live very well without it and when, let's be honest, coffee is just making you addicted to it and is just messing up you brain, nothing more, like game addictions and other stuff do. Coffee mostly made my stomach a mess but also I noticed that sometimes I would feel anxiety over nothing,I have had anxiety issues connected to other stuff and one anxiety episode because of the corona virus, but this was strange,I would sit and then I would start to feel anxious for no reason and then I would remember-Oh,I drank coffee today. I'm not gonna change my mind about coffee cause I'm a type of person who needs a lot of time to decide things but when I decide something that's it,it's decided. Coffee is not good for me so I avoid it.

I think one of the more fascinating things with Caffeine use is that as you use it over time your body increases those receptors for the adenosine and the caffeine seems to have less of an effect so you feel the need to have more caffeine to combat the lack of a buzz. Always see this around exams from the first week of study until the end

I realized I was addicted when I was really irritated one day and getting a mtn dew made me calm. Im almost 3 years off all forms of it. Also post acute withdrawals last about a year. Most people relapse at 3 months, then around 5 month, and 8/9 months is another hurdle. Consistently these time frames are hard for people.

I was diagnosed with caffeine addiction ((yep, it’s a real mental disorder)) and I was drinking over 1000 mg a day of caffeine. I had migraines, insomnia, stomach ulcers and heart problems because of my four energy drinks a day ritual. I tried to go cold turkey and let me tell you, very very bad idea. My already almost non existent appetite decreased even more and I was no longer eating, I was unable to get out of bed or function and got very depressed. It got so bad I passed out in the middle of class due to fatigue and had to go home for two days. I started up caffeine again after that and was back into a normal routine. I then weened off the heavy caffeinating and drink only 400 mg a day. Weening is the way to go, and caffeine addiction is certainly very real and serious, especially for people with depression or decreased levels of dopamine. Your body itself also becomes dependent on it, hence why people who go cold turkey can experience physical exhaustion and very slow response to things.

They're actually not unhealthy. At least, not as unhealthy as you would think. No worse than coffee or tea. Most brands of pop/soda and energy drinks have sugarless versions, and most energy drinks also have added vitamins. Also, caffeine isn't unhealthy; consider that the countries that consume the most of it have some of the longest lived people in the world (Finland and Norway, both of which consume something like 200mg+ of caffeine per day per person, compared to the US at about 60mg/day/person).

  • @l0zerth

Mostly true. Yes, caffiene is more of a psychological addictor than physiological, but it absolutely is physiological, and the physical withdrawals for a real caffiene addict can be a lot more than just a little headache and crankiness. Severe addiction can have flu like withdrawal symptoms, heart arythmias, and more. It also takes a lot less than 6-7 grams (1 gram = 1,000 milligrams) to clinically overdose. a healthy person taking three or four of those 200 mg caffiene pills at once (a received oral dose of 750-1,000 mg) can cause heart arrythmias, respiratory distress. clinical anxiety attacks, and even not far from hallucinations (usually starts at ~1,500 mg single dose, but don't try it, it's not ata all pleasant). For people with heart issues, a single energy drink, combining a regular ~100 mg dose of caffiene with taurine or niacine can cause severe palpatations and heart attacks.

I'm both physically and psychologically addicted to it. It's really, really hard to give up! I started using a lot of caffeine to counteract the exhaustion caused by my depression. It made me feel awake, alive and almost positive at first which my brain couldn’t do on its own! But it really just makes everything worse and I still keep reaching for it because I have a have never been a strong person!!!
caffeine can be as bad as hard drugs for some people but no one seam to understand or even care! if the Diet Mountain Dew cans (24 or more a day) around my apartment were beer cans it would be obvious I have a problem and need help! but I'm not popping pills so who cares! I struggle against the urge to self medicate my mental health issues with worse things and I've managed to pull back my drinking so I don't become an alcoholic but no matter what I do I can't stop myself from consuming caffeine, I feel so fucking powerless to it!!!! I always say I’ll stop, or it is my last one but I know I’ll go back to it because I always do!!!! no one understand and people with real addiction just laugh at me! Maybe it is just me? Maybe I’m just some kinda freak with no self control at all! Maybe I just failed at this like everything else in my life!! I really hate the thing I have become!!!!!!

+John Granahan The Russian sleep experiment isn't real, its a fictional story. Also, the people in the Russian sleep experiment story were on some kind of nerve gas/stimulant, they weren't just sleep deprived.

+Harry Barron Hey then I guess look it up for kicks!! and well if its not real than its probably best though i do believe that if the russians did want to do such an experiment they probably could have at the time, also a lot of lack of sleep probably would cause some mental health problems anyway regardless of the nerve gas stimulant which was there to stop them from sleeping.

After finals last year, I developed a severe stomach acidity issue (not quite acid reflux, but never got a solid diagnosis). Crippling pain anytime I ate, but was told to lay off acidic foods and drinks until the issue was resolved. I was up to 5 coffees a day (not small ones either!). Quit for over a month, no major drawbacks, in fact I actually felt more awake in the morning after the first initial week and found that I feel more energized after decaf tea or a good workout. Now I only have caffeinated beverages when I absolutely need it, like a big study day or a big workout. Try limiting caffeine intake to 2-3 times per week at most. Trust me, you won't regret it! :)

The DSM 5 includes caffeine withdrawal as a syndrome in its latest iteration. After consuming a large amount of it for many years, I quit cold turkey and had negative effects for approximately 2 months after. Incredible anxiety, like anxiety I've never experienced before in my life and that was every waking moment. I couldn't eat, I lost 40lbs in that period (weight I obviously had to lose anyway, but still). I realize this video is out of date now but Caffeine Withdrawal is seriously no joke.

Your overdose information is a bit off. A person with even a relatively high tolerance can overdose with less than a gram when it is taken quickly. I know this video is several years old, but if you're still reading the comments at this point it could be helpful to fix the information. It's very possible to buy caffeine online it it's pure form and take massive doses very quickly. People who only watch this video as medical information could easily land themselves in the hospital. • @kamuginkhan

I don't know where the americans got this idea that coffee is particularly stimulant and addictive to the point that giving coffee to a child is almost on the same level to give them alcohol. I drink coffee since my childhood and I usually drink about half a liter per day. I don't feel any particular stimulant effect after a cup of coffee then after drinking say a cup of milk, if I was addicted I would take bigger and bigger amounts of coffee to keep me "high". Drinking coffee here in Brazil is a cultural habit like drinking tea in England or Japan. In italy and Argentina they give wine to their children, short amounts of course, and those countries don't have a bigger average incidence of alcoholism or some other mental disorder because of that. So I don't give a damn about people who says that coffee is harmful to health, I'll just keep drinking it. Living is harmful to our health, it's because of it that we die.

I was reading this article about caffeine...I think it was on discovery news about how they think they have found a few genes that may help certain people to process caffeine. So the effects on those people would be minimal. I know myself I drink coffee all day and right up till I go to sleep and I sleep just fine. I know people though that if they drink coffee after lunch it will keep them awake most of the night. Just sucks to be them I guess

2:28 slight correction here, half the amount of a substance eliminated from the bloodstream does not necessarily mean you will feel half the effects. In the case of stimulants, this is almost certainly never going to be the case. This is because for stimulants (may also be the case for other drugs too) there is a "tipping point" beyond which the stimulants will take effect, below which you will crash, the crash will very likely occur well before half of the substance is eliminated from the blood.

i believe ur body builds tolerance to caffeine over time, now for me to get pleasure out of a cup of coffee, i drink one in the morning only, maybe a small one in the afternoon.
i get the pleasure and my body gets the boost when i need it, say a long night drive.

The only symptoms I have taken note of were not sleeping after recently drinking coffee, frequent bathroom use, and occasional shakes when I suddenly become nervous (but larger shakes, than if I were nervous without having had coffee). It does not make me hyper, it doesn't give me head aches if I don't drink it, it doesn't alleviate drowsiness, and I can suddenly go without coffee and still get along just the same. Other forms of caffeine don't seem to effect me.

I love caffeine. Some people say it doesn't work on them at all, some people say it makes them tired. It makes me feel great though. I remember my first time discovering caffeine pills. I thought that was just awesome that they put it into a pill. I was off caffeine for 5 months when I found them and I used to take 2000 milligrams in caffeine pills. It just made me feel amazing and it made everything that I did feel just great. I swear I could've stared at a wall for five hours and it would've been like the most entertaining thing ever. Quitting and getting that low tolerance again is so difficult though. Quitting cold is pretty much impossible. It's definitely addictive. My mind off caffeine is the most negative thing ever. A couple hours into my first day of caffeine and I'm already thinking what's the point in quitting, it's unnecessary suffering. I need a life or death situation in order to quit caffeine cold. The only way to possibly do it is to taper off.

Caffeine Use Disorder is mentioned in the DSM-5 though the jury is still out on whether it is a cause of mental illness or not, due to the withdrawal symptoms seen in avid consumers of beverages containing caffeine.

Anecdotally, it seems that there is a wide variety of levels of sensitivity to caffeine: in many comments below, people indicate that caffeine does not affect them, while I am extremely sensitive to caffeine: I get the shakes if I have more caffeine than I am used to and even cutting my regular consumption by half for one day results in a splitting headache that cannot be completely eliminated with ibuprofen. If I only regularly consume decaf coffee (which is low, but not completely free of caffeine) I will still get a bit of a headache if I skip a day. This sensitivity is, interestingly, shared by my father. Any research out there on genetic differences in receptor affinities for caffeine?

I love yerba mate and guaraná. When went to Argentina and tried mate I was in love, and then came Brazil omg guaraná won my heart; that flavor its like I touch the heavens, I remember being afraid bc it has 2x the caffeine as coffee beans yet coffee makes you more jittery IDK why but point is both drinks are great.

I don't require coffee to be happy and active but it helps when I have to get up early in the morning or I have to go to a class later in the afternoon. It doesn't make me more alert, but it does make me more mellow until my body wakes up of its own accord. Sugar is the real danger. I try to avoid drinking a lot of soda. I drink maybe half a can a day with ice and that's only during weekdays. Limiting one's sugar intake from non-natural sources like soda, ice cream, etc. is a good practicing for one's health in the long run. Although it would be best to cut it out completely, everything in moderation could be a good place to start. (...because ice cream is delicious.)

The problem with coffee is that almost invariably is consumed along with heavy sugared dessert food like donuts and cakes. I remember my aunt (my mother's sister) having her daily coffee (adding like 5 spoonful of sugar) and 3 or 4 donuts. She got full-blown type-2 diabetes in her early 20s though ultimately esophageal cancer killed her at age 36. When she died it was quite a wake-up call to all of us (because we close relatives were all having the same early symptoms of hers.) My family completely abandoned caffeine and sugar and thank god we're all healthy to this date (me pushing 40 and my parents in their 70s.)

At my worst, I used to drink 2 to 3, 12 cup pots of coffee a day, that I made with bottled caffeinated water. I would also eat roughly 1/2 a pound of chocolate covered espresso beans. To keep from getting heart burn, I would go through about 1/2 a bottle of Tums every day. I discovered this was a perfect recipe for kidney stones. I don't do that any more.

According to my psychologist I have a caffeine addiction - I'm up to 2 or so strong pots per day (I think that puts me close to 2 grams per day of caffeine). So while caffeine is not a mentally addictive substance, it can create a strong physical dependence/addiction. And in people more prone to addiction, it can be addictive.

I love caffeine. I never had any problems with it but at the same time I'm very sensitive to it in a good way. I never seemed to get any of the negative side effects of it. It just makes me feel good. I remember one time after I had 5 months off caffeine I discovered caffeine pills and so I started going bit crazy with them and I'd take 1000 milligrams all at once, five 200 milligram caffeine pills and it made me feel incredible. I swear I could've sat and stared at a wall for five hours and it would feel like the most entertaining thing ever. I felt absolutely limitless. The only problem was tolerance so in like a week of doing that every day I started taking 2000 milligrams of caffeine all in one go, then the next week I increased it to 3000 milligrams. At that point it just stopped working all together. Yeah I think I can handle caffeine better than most people. Nicotine is the opposite. Always makes my heart beat too fast and makes me feel like shit and makes me really sick even when I make sure to take it properly at a moderate or even low dose.

I tried stopping to drink coffee. Little did i know was that it helped with the rhythm of the heart. I suddenly decided to drink a mug of coffee per week. It didn't help. My blood pressure was down and that caused a lot headache. Then i heard that it made heart beat faster and decided to drink one mug per day but with a smaller mug. That helped balancing my bp a lot. Except when i had iron deficiency. Then my bp bothered me, got the supplements, went on coffe, increased red meat consumption for that time, got better. Now i still drink coffee and i am rarely bothered by my bp being low compared a few years ago.

Hey Hank, can you go over Taurine sometime? I would like to know exactly what that is.
Also, is it normal for someone to not feel any effects from these kinds of stimulants (caffeine, taurine, etc.)? Because that seems to be the case for me, although I do seem to have a high alcohol tolerance. I have never been drunk, and it's not for a lack of trying.
Do these have any relation with each other?

Working on a 0.15 grams caffeine per kilogram body mass calculation, I need about 19 grams of the stuff to hit close to the LD50, 25 grams if doing a 0.2g/kg body mass.
At that rate, I'd need at minimum ~60 Litres of Mt Dew (154mg/L) or 30 bottles in a row to get close to even the lowball figure of 19g, and at that point I'd have OD'd on the SUGAR in the drink long before hitting the concentration of caffeine!

I make this frakendrink sometimes that I've dubbed matchate, a mix of a kind of powdered green tea called matcha as well as some yerba mate (not matte, Mr Green - it's not a texture). Mate has a ton of caffeine, and matcha (since it contains the whole leaf, and thus all of the caffeine, rather than simply infusing some of the caffeine away like normal teas) has a similarly high dose - make a heavy brew of matcha using mate in lieu of water and you can seriously start getting some caffeine

i was diagnosed with adhd about a year ago...which is a year after i graduated high school. I always wondered why, when in my study hall class after i started feeling tired i would drink 2 red bulls....and surprisingly enough i would fall asleep. Caffeine does not affect me whatsoever, if anything it makes me sleepy which is weird.

Then what about those who can sleep after a mug of coffee? Then there are those who experience almost no effect at all.
The benefits noticed so far is it reduces the headache and lifts a depressive mood. On the hand, it tends to increase the tendency to get anxious easily when agitated.

I've gone without caffeine before without ill effect. That, however, changed once I became a retail manager. Though I can go without caffeine, the job's long hours and...interesting schedule means that I'd be working a 10-16 hour day on potentially 3-5 hours of sleep. Which, as you can imagine, isn't gonna work out so well.
So, caffeine it is for me.
