My name on Reddit is "losermobile" for a weird reason
there’s something about just hearing a full grown man who probably has kids my age talking about carti in such a way with actual knowledge about him, talking about specific albums or events in his career
Yeah Carti makes music for children so I’m sure it’s not easy finding any adults to talk to about him.
@@Randomjackass135 no it’s just u don’t see many people aged 30+ react to him or anyone in todays rap scene in general. When i search carti reaction theres a few people who get their dads to react and out of all of todays rappers they normally like carti the most just cus his music sounds good rather than relying on lyrics. You don’t see any people aged 40+ react to anything
@@Randomjackass135bad take
Carti makes music for enlightened aristocratic geniuses
@@BK-uf6xm funniest joke of 2024
11:17 “Put Him on the Noose, God DAYUM THAT’S HARD” I love this man, why can’t I have a professor like this 😂
Hoodbyair is a brand that was prominent in the early 2010s during the streetwear movement that Carti was part of. I think it’s important to notice cause I think the visuals and vibes of this album are a modern avant-garde take of the “hood” kinda tacky aesthetic of the early 2010s. Why the videos are in gas stations and the stereotypical hand gestures. Kinda taking that style and vibe and making it his own, which I admire cause I love that tacky era of flexing lol
Also important to know that hood by air was the first true high end designer streetwear brand, before established houses gentrified the market
Carti was way after the era of HBA being big. This is kinda tinfoil hat but I don't think its a coincidence that he dropped a song with that name the same year tik tok is discovering the brand lol
@@namebox797 nah carti was around during the era when HBA was at its peak. He was big in the tumbler fashion scene with Ian Connor and Luka and all them. Was definitely not well known, but people really in the scene knew who he was. Not in the beginning of HBA but definitely around it’s peak
@@carlosh2050 Carti wore mostly streetwear brand like preme during that era tho, Ian wore HBA in some of old Tumblr pic. Not saying he didn't know about it but him wearing HBA is new. Also I'm pretty sure Shane Oliver put the brand on hiatus for most of cartis come up but I might be wrong about that
@@namebox797 u right but he been tapped in w shane oliver at least. anonymous club, shane oliver's new project has featured some carti cosigns, check on their hosted boiler room sets n who they collab w. its unlikely carti wasnt in tune with hba at least
This is literally me talking to my girlfriend about these songs
😂
great reviews of great songs, but you saying "based" at 8:03 reminded me of something: you should listen to Lil B, arguably the most important rapper to modern stuff, like trap, cloud rap, etc.
he started becoming really important around 2010 and he is pretty much the reason why drain gang, carti, etc. and this whole "chill rap" thing took off, and i think judging by your videos in the past youll find him very very interesting
i would reccomend listening to the songs Birth of Rap, Im God and I Love You first and then if you feel like listening to a full project set aside some time to listen to God's Father, trust me, its worth it. one of the most important rap tapes of the century
also absolutely research him and his influence, its absolutely fascinating how many rappers started out as big Lil B fans
he also invented the word "based" lol
what i find interesting about the adlibs is how you can hear them faintly in former projects before they take the forefront in carti's new album phases. you can hear the "wha" adlib in die lit (listen to Lean 4 Real), and you can hear the "seeyuh" adlib in Whole Lotta Red (Rockstar Made). Not too crazy of an observation but I find the continuity of it pretty interesting.
also to touch on the gas station's symbolism, it could also be a way of returning to your beginnings, as some do when they've accomplished all there is to
AVAA! You’re the best, professor. Such a breath of fresh air in the music review youtube sphere.
AVAA. Great video. I highly recommend you check out Black Kray (aka Sickboyrarri). He is a southern cloud rapper with ties to Raider Klan. He has a similar style to Carti (production and not pronouncing words etc). He has these super emotional songs but tackled in this super apathetic style. He will be talking about trauma but in such a awkward (kind of iroic) way, he will discuss these topics but absoulutly slather it in slang and other just random reference. I recomend City of Doves. Cool stuff. Great video.
SHOUT OUT BLACK MF KRAY AKA SICKBOYRARI AKA GVCCI KRAY LA GOTH AKA LIL RARI AKA LIL SHYE AKA BABY MOET AKA FOREIGHN JETSKI AKA FERRARI KRAY AKA ICEDOUTUZI AKA DOVESSHYNE AKA LILWITCHHOUSESHAWDY AKA TEEZY F BABY ISRAEL VA RICHMOND LEGEND ANOTHER RECCOMENDATION- ALL HIS MF SONGS
fr
great recommendation
yes
Damn I love this guy. First video I watched of your was your “Call me if you get lost” review and I’ve been a fan ever since. ❤ AVAA love ya Sky
this dude literally says what my mind understand about carti
AVAA in regards to the chorus on Backr00ms its a tripple entendre referencing being a football player throwing a "bomb" pass, like a shooter in the streets, firing his weapon (throwin the bomb) well and he's a player in the club throwing lots of money around to get women. It's loose but kind of there lol.
I am SO glad to have stumbled across this video whilst on my Carti kick! Love your commentary on his music.
this analysis is so different and appreciated lol. im glad you catch the importance of "seeyuhh" off rip lol
AVAA I LOVE HOW IN DEPTH THIS REACTION WAS THIS IS AMAZING !
Absolute legend thanks for the wise words and insight you explain it so well
AVAA, you mentioned how Carti talks about his dead friends in such a cruel tone and asked if anyone else had done the same. I watched the video yesterday but today I was listening to New Thangs by Curren$y featuring Freddie Gibbs. In Gibbs’s verse he says “Dead homies in my wall I zip ‘em up like the coroner” and that was in 2018. Im sure there are more examples but I think your point about Carti straying away from the norm in terms of his evolution is still valid.
You’d be the best professor, seem like such a cool dude. Hope your students don’t take you for granted
I'm also a GenXer who caught the Carti bug after hearing my son play HoodByAir when we were visiting relatives in the Northeast. I'm one of those doomer boomers who felt sorry for today's generation who don't have the music we grew up with. I was blown away by Carti's creativity and immediately realized his musical genius. It stirred up a deep joy within me of hope for this generation, but to be brutally honest Carti made me look forward to my own future.
Carti is defiantly sloppy, dirty, stupid, and the music is as you've said "anti-music". You can say the same about his concerts and videos. Regardless, they are works of pure genius. On one hand, you want his music to be more refined, but on the other hand you realize doing so would ruin it. In reality, he isn't anti-music per se. His sloppiness and carelessness is an antidote to today's dystopian society where human creativity is devalued and pitted against AI. He successfully destroys that narrative.
I remember hearing the “red tape” back in 2015 there was something about carti that was so different. Intoxicating once I heard Brokeboi I knew carti was the one. Being from the Midwest I went to see him the first time he came to Chicago to perform. Something about him very different. Like a kid growing up. I do get a similar buzz or feeling about BBY GOYARD if you haven’t checked him out. Just different. Loved the video and will subscribe 👍🏽
BBY Goyard Roger that I'm onto it....
Nah it’s miraixx
@@BigRamificationscheck out Shannon’s ladder by him it’s produced by evilgiane (check out surfgang too) who produced our destiny by carti and rocky and element 115 by Bby goyard. Also izaya tiji (mouse in the trap and what it seems. Very ambient and different) if you haven’t already they’re both in their own lane and super creative
🔥🎤💨💯 love the analysis, keep goin in.
AVAA. Leave ‘em in the cold put ‘em in the tundra 🥶🥶🥶☃️☃️☃️
23:29 . One thing that makes me think of him going normal is for once he’s actually having an album rollout haha
AVAA. I wonder if you know about what the "backrooms" are as the video is in reference to that internet spooky lore people have made. Kane Pixels has cool videos that take place there
Carti using the bar "all my friends are dead" with so much desensitivity is a direct reference to Uzi's song XO tour life. Uzi uses this bar with the same sort of dramatic apathy. Carti is ironically shouting out his friend and frequent collaborator by saying that he has no living friends. I personally believe Carti did this intentionally and deserves credit here.
You should really check out that Uzi song, professor. I do not blame you for your slight old-head bias which caused you to miss a fairly blatant reference to a massively popular track lol AVAA of course
Uzi totally invented "all my friends are dead"...yep
That's a stretch it has nothing to do with uzi
Skye specifically says "Tell me, rap scholars. Give me one other time in rap history where an MC has talked about his friends' death and indicated that it was not important."
I was simply telling Skye the one example I thought of and that the connection is reinforced by the history of collaboration.
I was never trying to persuade anyone into agreeing with me in the first place.
@@Fiveward but uzi doesn't say it with the same level of apathy as Carti he's singing in the chorus with pain
He's dissing him, they both have had a prince-mj thing going on w each other for a while.
2024 is a YoungBoy type video
Absolutely insane to hear a university professor bring up drain gang every once in a while. 😭😭
AVAA. your insight is valued prof
Thankyou , i litterly thought it was " put him on a nuce" and i was like jesus that HARD
THIS VIDEO MADE ME LAUGH SO MUCH IN A GOOD WAY
I love your analysis (from France), keep it up
avaa our lemon twigs/opium obsessions are syncing up
Great breakdown, the way you communicate is super easy to follow
Kinda interesting how you compared industry baby to 2024 because both have kanye production, both also remind me of all of the lights
AVAA, the Terror Gang video might be the ultimate rap gas station music video of all time, at least in the underground. I'm surprised I haven't seen others making this connection, mainly because SpaceGhostpurrp has tremendously influenced Carti (and nearly everyone else).
AVA this was great🔥
W video bro 😎. Keep it up.
AVA AVA AVA!!! Love your videos dude! Ik you’ve moderately gone into yeats music, but it would be so dope if you did a deep dive into yeats early 2021-2022 (pre 2 alive) run. I’d love to hear your input on his influence, his lyrics, his vocal inflection and the major evolution he made in that year. More specifically the albums Alive(OG), 4L, and Up 2 Me. Please 👏🏼
apparently these singles are completely separate from the album itself
I think seyuh is like “see ya” like “he’s gone”/“bye”
in professor skye we trust
23:37 "loaded diaper style" lol Gangnam Style dance of 2024?
AVAA i love your videos its like nothing else
24:45 "Speaking of the moon I play pokemon go with my wife every day" Tell me thats not a bar hahahahhhha
“Trust me pal, I’m not that guy” 😂😂😂 favorite Prof. Skye quote
13:19 remember the original gas station rappers ruclips.net/video/2KkMyDSrBVI/видео.html
AVAA! just enjoying this : )
AVAA I wanna see what you think about the new Veeze album, one of my favorite albums of the year but slightly problematic
I USED TO PRAY FOR TIMES LIKE THIS!!!! AVAA
A man like u very old, I would not see him enjoying new mumble rap, it's like him enjoying lil pump and yeat
"Lynching your opps" 🤣 AVAA!
15:52 playboycarti would NOT know 💀💀
AVAA good vid prof
AVAA, Hoodbyair might be my favourite Carti song ever
bravo doktore, pozdravi zenu!
AVAA so glad u get it
skye would make a good lawyer if needed
SEEYUH 🗣️
AVAA such a beautiful video! And eye opening as always... Would love to see a video about Peggy's All My Heroes Are Cornballs, some interesting gender theory laced through there along with all the other stuff I think, very much a modern SMiLE album too. If you can do these songs justice I think you'd do that album justice too
As a carti fan this is great lol
“What does seeyuh indicate?”
AVAA ur the goat
AVAA I love that you also play pokemon go every day I am super addicted to that game haha
AVAA cool vid will be following
Ojivolta produced industry baby with kanye fun fact
AVAA. I truly love the way you discuss music like this. so often its written off as mindless nonsense, but its so much more than that. older generations wrote off nirvana and kurt kobain for the same reason carti is written off, but if you truly listen, their is just a different type of artistry at play then your framiliar with. I hated carti at first. couldnt stand his music. He has been my top artist on spotify for 3 years now. It took me 6 months to come around to his music, but i was intrigued by how much i didnt like it, since really what it did was challlenge my notions for what trap music was, as well as challenged my understanding of the voice as in instrument. Having grown up singing in choirs, i understood that the voice was instrument as much as a guitar is, but even that understanding was challenged by cartis music. I think his albums are great examples of challenging preconcieved notions, and how with time, these once expiremental albums, seem normal. again AVAA
AVAA SKIPPED AHEAD BUT REALIZED I WANTED TO HEAR THE WHOLE THING
dude your work is so good ava
"all of my friends are dead" refers to all his friends being money/dead presidents
YVL YVL YVL
Screaming with glee
Great video
AVAA 8:00 Personally I was really into the Big Hit video; really appreciated it.
Thanks!
Aave you are the goat
I don't enjoy this type of music (being an old head myself, I got here a couple of years ago when I was getting into Taylor post-Red TV), but I do love your analyses across the musical spectrum so much. So I guess AVAA.
this isn't even the real discography of the original whole lotta red, the final project was completely white washed. this artist you're referring to died years before this album was dropped.
AVAA tundra is sucha great song
AVAA professor Travis Scott and tomorrow Brady are friends
love ya
Idk if H00DBYAIR is emotional at all to me the song is what they would play as you were dragged into hell to be punished for eternity
AVAA, I think he actually got arrested for having a gun in the car like yesterday
AAVE video 2 of pleading with skye to look into young thug, specifically his album jeffery. he influenced everything vocally you love about carti and i think may give you a better understanding of where carti might be taking his career
YES! Need to go back to the roots of cartinese
That's cool everyone here enjoys it. And I think Carti enjoys making music like this too.
But you gotta understand that in order for Carti to be considered a great, he has to have hits. Which he really doesn't. He has a couple songs from his first album that are POPULAR, but he doesn't have bonafide hits unfortunately.
It's just a competitive thing we do in hip hop, and he can do all this weird interesting experimental music all he wants, but if he can't translate it to a hit song that everyone likes, he's just not going to go down as a great unfortunately. He may be remembered as a great Avant-Garde Artist, but Avant Garde is it's own thing for a reason
Blastoise is a pokemon name that sounds like a music genre
Yes!
BACK IN THE CAR
A little late but can you review Veeze’s Ganger album? Loved this vid
That jack harlow joke was funny asl😂
Unc knows his stuff. Cinematography in rap has stagnated unfortunately
I feel like all of your videos have an obstacle you need to cross during your review, like rain, or your kids playing Mario kart
Bellsprout too
Unc gets it
If you understand quebec culture you have to check out jeune loup, massive artist
can analyze why Lil Uzi Vert always talks about having unprotected raw sex in like half his discography? Mayhaps there's a deeper meaning there...
not professor skye changing my opinion on tundra #avaa
i appreciate you, teach. thx for sharing your thoughts!
i can’t tell u the amount of times i’ll be sitting at home or in the car and i’ll think omg i wanna put hoodbyair on or any of the new songs then i remember they’re not on streaming platforms. Obviously i can just go on youtube but ur never gonna get that feeling when it comes on from shuffling a playlist and that’s sad. I low-key want these singles to be on the album but then again i just wanna hear as much new music as possible from him so if it’s have these 4 on the album or have 4 new songs on the album then a part of me will want to hear new music
files bro
You should get into downloading files onto your phone n computer, it’s kinda fun
AAVA Carti a genius
S3YUH!
u should analyze xaviersobased he from nyc and hes currently leading a new movement in music, maybe when his new album comes out its dropping soon
