The Shins are a band you regret not paying more attention to the first time around. Their Discography is nuts and has no bad songs. It's a band you will see again and realize who they are and that you've heard them. Continue listening to them, they only get better the more you listen to.
This is a very special song to me. Was sent to me by someone I was head over heels for when I was a teenager. Things didn't work out and it still stings almost 15 years later. This song still leaves a pit in my chest. I reckon it'll always be special to me. Just like the memories of that person.
Lex was spot on with this one. I can picture the scene. The person just got up the courage to quit the job they hate. They're driving peacefully down the highway, thinking about all the possibilities their future holds, this song is playing on the radio and BOOM!!!!! They get sideswiped by a semi. 😟
This was one of my forever 32 year old's favorite songs. It's from one of his favorite movies, Garden State. He loved the entire soundtrack, therefore mine, as well! In the movie, guy meets girl and she tells him, "this song will change your life"! BTW, they were in a doctors office! LOL
I had this song as my phone ringtone back when ringtones were the best thing you could do on phones. 😆 Specifically, it was set for my new girlfriend/now wife, kind of as a signal for the new era of my life coming out of the depression and loneliness I had felt for the years previous to the new relationship. Still brings strong feelings to hear The Shins, and don't know why it goes years between my listens!
Sometimes I think their lyrics are just about making sounds that are pretty, but I like the music. James Mercer is in another band called Broken Bells that i love. Songs by them: High Road, Ghost Inside, Holding on for Life, After the Disco, The Mall & Misery
This song makes me feel joy and sadness, contentment and loss. It hurt my heart the first time I heard it 20 years ago, and it hurts now. So effing good.
The Shins - master songwriters. This one was on the soundtrack for Garden State - no foreboding meaning. Please react to their song Phantom Limb, best thing they've written and genius song. Yes, a lot in common with The Beach Boys, or rather Brian Wilson specifically.
The shots of James in the car recreate The Minutemen's Double Nickels on the Dime. I've always wondered if there's a visual reference to Under the Table and Dreaming, but haven't seen in confirmed.
I asked my 66 yr old brother what one album would you have on a deserted island and he said "The Shins" I was shocked as he had lived through the late 60s, early 70s. He introduced me to Led Zeppelin!! I don't know who my brother is anymore!! 🙄
@@scottwatson9453 No, there is too much music out there for me to actually have a favorite, But I will tell you this, RIGHT NOW my favorites are Yebba and Tedeschi Trucks band!
@@babylonsister118 the question I asked my brother was to choose only one album and that's the only album you can listen to for the rest of your life.. Mines Pink Floyd The Wall. I'll check out the bands you suggested!
This is indie rock at its finest. It reminds me a lot of Weezer, but with a different kind of delivery. What's it about? Duh, nerd love! There aren't a lot of songs in this world that give me goosebumps every time they come on, but this is one that does. Plus,it's the song that Natalie Portman plays for Zach Braff in the movie "Garden State" and says, "This song will change your life".
Love this band and song, it’s new to me .. Thank you 🙏. You’ve reacted to Siouxsie & The Banshees - Peek a boo months ago. Did you know that Siouxsie & Budgie (the drummer) formed The Creatures - a side project in 1980s. Their first album ‘Feast’ was a gem. Different to The Banshees music, very experimental. Check out ‘Festival of Colours’ from that album.
It was chill, but it's also bittersweet. In this context, the bittersweet tone that comes and goes, makes you feel like something bad happened or is gonna happen. But it's also chill.
Yeah that’s what I mean .. “ right before you slip in a banana peel “ 😂 this song is great for when something crazy happens… the plot twist or the climax of a movie 😂 the big revelation 😂
I remember blasting this on top of my 998 humvee, Ft Gordon, GA, on our first day back to the motorpool after my 22mo Iraq deployment. Finally, leave and now you back. Makes you appreciate things.
The quality of the tracks on both of these albums is absolutely nuts. Chutes Too Narrow is the only album that I can listen to without feeling the need to skip songs, all of the songs are amazing. My favorites are Young Pilgrims, Saint Simon, Pink Bullets, Gone for Good, Those To Come, Australia, Spilt Needles, Girl Sailor and A Comet Appears. Which is basically half of the albums😂
Every time I heard that song I feel like I’ve seen it in a classic movie scene.. like where someone is dying .. or there’s a war going on .. I guess it reminds me of Simon and Garfunkel and The Graduate kind of relationship 😂
Good to see you found The Shins ... my favorite of theirs is a song called Girl Sailor. Another underrated and often unknown band is an Australian band called the Lucksmiths. Hey, when you guys are feeling adventurous and want to explore some very interesting rock history, please, please, please check out some Captain Beefheart. Rolling Stone magazine had one of his albums (Trout Mask Replica) on their top 500 albums of all time ... his was number 60. I wouldn't start with that album though.I met the dude several times and what a great storyteller. Tread into his work gently so you don't get scared away (it's not obscene of offensive, just a very different sound). Something like "This is the Day" or "Observatory Crest" would be a good start, as much of his stuff is SO avant garde ... he used to be neighbors with Frank Zappa. He inspired so many artists. last time I ran into him was at a 7-11 store, he was buying some ice cream. Peace to you and your family.
The scenes of the band in the water look like they're trying to recreate the cover of the the Slint album Spiderland, which you should check out. "Good Morning Captain" was on the soundtrack to the film "Kids," and is as good a place to start as any.
I believe the concept she is trying to is express is that the song is emotionally evocative, and I couldn't agree more. It would be the perfect song, in a movie to create the desired atmosphere before a sudden tragedy. I have been a fan of the Shins since this song came out, but I really want someone to react to Caring is Creepy.
I went to see the White Stripes in 2007 and the Shins opened for them. I ended up liking them more than the Stripes. That may have had a lot to do with me not liking The White Stripes current album at the time, but The Shins really stood out.
Definitely used to be a fan of theirs. I went one time to see a concert that had them in it. The headliner was Modest Mouse, supported by The Shins and a couple of other bands. Already knew who they were, but I was most excited to see Modest Mouse. Yet it was The Shins that ended up stealing the show. They really blew me away and by comparison, Modest Mouse was kinda off that night which was disappointing.
Lex has no idea how profound her observation about this song is to my life and it is too personal for the to share it. However, I am shook right now thinking about what she said.

Spot on. Them and Spoon have similar hip vibes without being annoying "hipster" music
well said, I agree totally.
I often say "God and James Mercer don't make no trash."
Finally some indie rock! Please more in this genre.
Like Bright Eyes - First Day of My Life [Official Music Video]
The Faint! Hot Hot Heat!
They should do Babyshambles or Pete Doherty in general.
Cool lyrics for them to ponder.

This makes my soul smile. This song tickles my brain in the best way. I love this band so much.
#same ❤❤❤

The Shins are brilliant. More indie, please!
This was one of my forever 32 year old's favorite songs. It's from one of his favorite movies, Garden State. He loved the entire soundtrack, therefore mine, as well! In the movie, guy meets girl and she tells him, "this song will change your life"! BTW, they were in a doctors office! LOL
I love this song. First heard it on the Garden State soundtrack

My favorite is “Caring is Creepy”
I first heard this group from the Garden State movie soundtrack. I really like this song.
Sometimes I think their lyrics are just about making sounds that are pretty, but I like the music. James Mercer is in another band called Broken Bells that i love. Songs by them: High Road, Ghost Inside, Holding on for Life, After the Disco, The Mall & Misery
Finally, somebody else who acknowledges the existence of Broken Bells!
High Road had me in a clutch hold for way too long.
This song makes me feel joy and sadness, contentment and loss. It hurt my heart the first time I heard it 20 years ago, and it hurts now. So effing good.
Natalie Portman promised it would change my life.
The Shins - master songwriters. This one was on the soundtrack for Garden State - no foreboding meaning. Please react to their song Phantom Limb, best thing they've written and genius song. Yes, a lot in common with The Beach Boys, or rather Brian Wilson specifically.
The Shins will change your life
Ahhh the Garden State
To me it's a comfort. I can't explain why.
Sufjan Stevens - Chicago
The old Albuquerque accent strikes again.
I love the Shins. This was 1 of 2 songs on the sound track to the movie Garden State.
Love The Shins. This album is awesome but my favourite song is Simple Song off the album Port Of Morrow
I love that song too, but a lot of Shins 'purists' don't favor Port of Morrow compared to earlier records.
God this makes me miss the Pacific NW. ♥
EDIT: That rooftop shot is a recreation of an iconic album cover by the band The Replacements.
I noticed that, too. The shot of the guy driving in the back seat reminded me of the cover of "Double Nickels on the Dime" by the Minutemen.
@@ffwoodycooks7283 Yep, they also recreated the Slint and Squirrel Bait covers in there as well.
And the Husker Du "Zen Arcade" and "New Day Rising" album covers.

Included in the soundtrack for the movie Garden State. Best soundtrack ever and a great movie.
Funny, slipping on a banana peel is is the exact premise of another video of theirs: ruclips.net/video/bIRmyfKOAfM/видео.html
Holy! Finally some Indie Rock. Need more of this genre!
This is indie rock at its finest. It reminds me a lot of Weezer, but with a different kind of delivery. What's it about? Duh, nerd love! Siouxsie and the Banshees has a lot of better songs than "Peek a Boo" that these 2 should react to.
I love The Shins.
Such a beautiful song
I discovered this great band from the movie Garden State.
This video is dope because it’s them recreating album covers from great punk and post-hardcore bands
It was chill, but it's also bittersweet. In this context, the bittersweet tone that comes and goes, makes you feel like something bad happened or is gonna happen. But it's also chill.
The banana slip is a very weird take.
So Portland. I live here.
And Albuquerque... I'm from there, like James Mercer.
Not ashamed to admit Garden State introduced me to the shins.
Great video y'all, they sound like a combination of the Beatles and the Beach Boys. Thanks friends.
absolutely musical gold!
Lmao "this is the song you listen to before you slip on a banana peel."
Like marshmallows removed from the fire, right before they turn ugly…..
Interesting take on the mood of this song. I usually listen to this when I’m in an introspective mood.
Yeah that’s what I mean .. “ right before you slip in a banana peel “ 😂 this song is great for when something crazy happens… the plot twist or the climax of a movie 😂 the big revelation 😂
This is one of those songs that you really need to read the lyrics to understand that you have NO IDEA what they are singing about.
I remember blasting this on top of my 998 humvee, Ft Gordon, GA, on our first day back to the motorpool after my 22mo Iraq deployment. Finally, leave and now you back. Makes you appreciate things.
Ode to The Replacements at the end - sitting on the roof.
The whole video is composed of different album covers - Zen Arcade, Let it be, Double Nickels on the Dime, Spiderland and more
This is the first song I’d ever heard of theirs and have loved them ever since then. I’ve seen them twice in concert.
This makes me relax instantly . Thx, great song. And no, no bad things will happen to you if you relax to good music.
Chutes too narrow and winching the night away are masterpieces

This's in the movie 'Garden State'
Two words. Garden State. 😎
You guys just make me smile with good vibes every time. 😃 💙
i used to say indie music sucks but then i found the shins ,band of skulls , ben howard and some other great artists and my playlist evolved ,
They got a couple good songs "Simple Song" and "Sleeping Lessons"
🍼🍼👣👣 Count down to baby Jack🍼🍼👣👣❣
So, there’s this movie called Garden State...
Their lyrics are poems. It’s important to research the meanings to these songs because they’re so beautiful and purposeful.
Next The Shins song should be Sea Legs
What a brilliant song
The scenes of the band in the water look like they're trying to recreate the cover of the the Slint album Spiderland, which you should check out. "Good Morning Captain" was on the soundtrack to the film "Kids," and is as good a place to start as any.
I like the nod to various album covers from classic underground indie bands from the 80s - Husker Du, The Replacements and the Minutemen.
Lex slipped on a banana peel on this one

Gotta do some Iron and Wine next.
The video features the band recreating various famous album covers
This still sounds so good.
Classic indie track, check out simple song by them for different perspective of this under rated band!
Great song, that's how I found your videos!
Love the vocals on this.
To me this song sounds like hope
Their album Ports of Morrow is a masterpiece
The Shins just get better after this album... Pink Bullets, Turn a Square, Sleeping Lessons, Phantom Limb, Simple Song....
Great song and band.
This song maybe the top of the indie mountain. Perfect!! Check out the Go-Betweens Boundry Rider. A monster!

React to Simple Song by the Shins. It’ll blow you away.
