There's no arguing about Handel, all his music is extraordinary and this concert is no exception. This ensemble has the ability to effectively render this quality. In addition to the orchestra, I would like to compliment the oboist for her skill and her beautiful sound, among other things, I appreciate her versatility and I find her equally good at the recorder.
i would like to raise a question about the choice of tempo. apparently the Grave means dark, heavy and serious, for me it must be like walking in rather slow steps with sence of heaviness, but you seemed taking it with more fluent, almost dance like approach, could you please reveal a bit more about your interpretation?
Thank you for your attentive listening and your question. We agree that it is a rather fast tempo for Grave, but the music led us to it. We would like to share the following two thoughts: (1) As you mention this indication is not only about the tempo, but also, and rather mainly, about the character. The characteristics you mention are in this movement audible in, amongst other things, the dissonances and the dotted rhythms. Mainly the dotted motive led us to a rather forward moving tempo. (2) Before making recordings ourselves, we also listened to recordings as 'the' version of a certain performer, but actually it is rather 'a' version of a performer, which was recorded on a certain moment, on a specific place with given conditions and is connected with those elements. If we would have recorded the piece in a larger church or another room with more reverb, a slower tempo would probably have been the result.
Musicians and performance are fantastic. Videography is absolutely abominable - the worst mishmash of windows and music stands and earlobes and details of room decor, with hardly any views of the performers for more than a few seconds. Only someone with ADHD on ritalin would view a performance in that way.
Magnifique interprétation, vivante, jouée avec beaucoup de sensibilité et d'intelligence. Bravo à vous chère collègue !
Absolutely amazing performance! True baroque style, energetic and elegant!
I think there's a new reference recording! The ornamentation in the third movement is amazing!
