I have been spent several weeks in Vlore and also been to Berat, Durres and Tirana. Really cool country. Have you expanded or done any exploring in Kosovo? I spent a summer there in 2009 and have always thought it has a lot of untapped potential.

Yes I've been in August to Tirana and Durres. Really enjoyed both as it really feels like a hidden gem without too much tourists. Durres isn't the best coastal area in Albania but makes sense for a shorter visit due to the proximity to Tirana. I'd absolutely recommend a visit to the country

Fell in love with Albania this past year after five months of traveling all over Albania. Great places you skipped over. Shkodra in the north. Korcha in the southeast. Gyrocaster in the south and my favorite coastal town, Himara, fifty kilometers north of Saranda. Albanians live from the heart. Wonderful people. Look forward to going back. US citizens get one year visa.

Where would you suggest for someone who loves both mountains and being close to the sea as well?
I currently live in Tirana. I've been here 4 months and I absolutely love it. The Albanian people are friendly and kind, the food is delicious and it's so beautiful. I have never felt unsafe and I am out and about day and night. My concern is that this best kept secret won't be a secret for much longer😩

I'm no expert. I haven't been here very long. It depends on your lifestyle. Tirana has many cafes, resturants, shops and is very busy. I understand the Riviera areas are more touristy in the summer and it's quiet in the winter with less open cafes, restaurants and shops. There are many other places. We are in Tirana for a year to allow ourselves to check out the other areas of Albanian so when we return we can settle in a place that works for us.
but there are currently protests in Tirana. I can see many youtube videos about it. Is the beginning of austherity?

How much did it cost to buy a reasonable 2 bed apartment?
I lived in Tirana, Albania for 2 years, from 2000-2002. It has changed a lot since then. I was just there this past October. They are continually making improvements to Tirana. Korça is my favorite place that I have visited there. I love Albania. Having said that, Albania has a trash problem, you can't help but notice it. Also, even newer sidewalks are not well made, and many things remain unfinished. If you visit, you will notice it. The people are super hospitable. I learned a lot about hospitality from my time there.
@@sm3675 Having visited a few times over the past 6 years, I have been happy to see more emphasis on not polluting, and more trashcan around Tirana. And I agree, they need to get rid of single use plastic, especially shopping bags. More paper or cloth bags for shopping would really make a difference. Ku je tani? Ku banon? Jam në South Carolina.

I’m Albanian and you are right the trash problem needs to be sorted out obviously is not as bad as India or Egypt but from European standards is bad and the government need to do a lot more. There are various influences group who are pushing Albanian government to do more.

What type of visa?
I bought a detached house in Vlore for the same price as a garage in the UK, the new airport opening in March 2025, plus the new road linking up Montenegro and Greece. It is easy to get a residency. Just deposit 2500 euros in an account, medical insurance of 50 euros a year and a rental agreement or proof of purchase. A two-bedroom house on 500 sqm of land was 66,000 euros. The food is good, with the average restaurant charging 10 euros per person.
What website do you search to find real estate? I'm only seeing condos.

Albania has always had a fiercely independent streak since the days of Skanderberg. Could be the next digital nomad hot spot, has some really nice coastal towns.
I think the next best freedom will be in South- or middle America. If everthing would be normal - you may be right.

I will buy some property in Vlore as I want to be on coast and the fact that they are building a new airport should make it a good investment.
I'm okay with tourists and expats, but not when the only reason is because of the low cost.
Albanian is a beautiful language and we are a race full of history.
Please learn our language and how customs if you want to stay here in the long run.

It’s hard to learn your language my dear. People will visit your beautiful country but they will find out that retirement isn’t easy if you don’t speak the language.
Sadife's english is very good. I like it.
My husband and I have been living in Tirana for the past year and have been very happy here. The costs are low. We rent a 2 bedroom 2 bath apartment in the city center for 650 USD. Dining here is pretty cheap. We split a beautiful filet mignon and a salad topped with avocado and truffles for 25 bucks! Although we are paying out of pocket, medical care is affordable too. My husband had to see the doctor and was given an ultrasound. The cost for everything - including a followup appointment was 50 USD.
The people are friendly, they especially like Americans. There are streets, parks, and schools named after US presidents - even a gelateria! Who knew!!!!!! We are SLOWLY learning to speak Albanian, but English is fairly common - especially among the younger folks.
The climate is fairly mild. It did snow one day last year, but it was the first snow in Tirana in 9 years. The summer was a little warmer than I like, but not awful. Overall, I highly recommend it.
Where is a good site to look for local rental homes?
@@natashamarcella11 We live in the area around Pazari i Ri. I like it. It's very convenient and we can walk almost anywhere we want to go so we don't need a car. Another neighborhood I like is Komuna e Paresit. It's also very convenient. Both areas are just outside the most expensive neighborhood, The Blloku. So you have easy access to some more upscale dining and shopping, but rent is cheaper. Komuna e Paresit is also close to the Grand Park which is nice. If I was doing it again I'd also think about living in Durres, a city on the coastline about 25 miles or so away. It runs little cooler in the summer than Tirana and the ferry over the Adriatic to Bari, Italy is there. Just a few ideas. Depends on personal preference. I would say that the infrastructure in general here is a little rougher than Americans are used to and when you're shopping you have to be careful of knock offs. The people are delightful and love Americans so much I cringe for fear we will let them down. All in all I have to say it's been a good move. There is a Facebook group called Expats in Albania. You might want to check that out for more insight and advice. Happy planning!!!!

I'm a retired American looking for a second and likely permanent residence. I've lived in Germany and have family there,but wouldn't consider living there now. I've been seriously looking at Georgia and I think I would love it,but the tensions with Russia and involvement with NATO and the EU are worrisome. At first look,Albania certainly looks promising and worth exploring.
Albanians love America and Americans. I suggest you visit to get a feel for the country.
Suggest you buying a property in areas such as Kukes Peshkopi Dibra etc with 30,000-50,000$ you buy a home for all life and no tax there ! Internet water and electricity cost average 50€ month if you are in home if not 0€ !
With a property US people can have 1-3 years Albanian residence paper even in schengen visit
georgia is good in part because of phage therapy (non-antibiotic antibiotics with no side effeccts) stray animals seem to be a problem most places.
Go Hungary or Poland.. close to Germany and basically each point of EU. Easy get back to US, no immigrants, stable infrastructure, not too hot climate, reasonable prices and safety. You can also easily buy house. If you make gestures and you are friendly with them they will like you.

It’s super cheap. I get amazing apartment in Tirana center for 642€ including all, WiFi too.
But you can get apartments with sea view all the way down to 280€, and some under :)
Food is very cheap, so no worries

sammie smith, I was going to ask. how are the non-whites treated? I know first hand through experience that non-whites are not always welcomed/recognized in parts of EU.
They are treated fine and respectfully, especially if they are from North America they just will not marry nonwhites, everything else is fine.

Albanians love learning about others and are very respectful, but be wary of dating. You can potentially find a romantic partner here, but it will take a lot of time for ppl of other nationalities.
Dating is easy, marriage is not.

Great video that addresses things I have often wondered as I plan a future Greek holiday with Corfu as part of the itinerary, I wondered if a similar experience can be had on the Albanian side of the water. Ksamil and Sarande look fantastic, beach stays are my type of holiday exactly. Everything over there like accommodation and food look like excellent value for money. Trust me there is no comparison between them. Till the 90s the Albanians had Communism. If cheap prices is your primary goal sure Albania is much cheaper than Greece for vacation. If quality and beauty is your thing then there's no real dilemma here.
Very nice job! Your report makes it all seem very enticing! We will do the entire coast to decide where to plant ourselves long-term, though truth be told, there is some resistance from those who might have pre-conceived notions about growing a tech company in Albania. It would be VERY HELPFUL AND INTERESTING if you could do a video speaking about the true cost of living. Rent, utilities, groceries, health insurance for foreigners, the workforce, transport, entertainment, you know... all the usual categories. On a separate note, we would try to steal you away from Andrew if we could. You are obviously very professional and polished and obviously very fluent in English. Is it very difficult to find someone with your credentials in Albania? We hope you will do more videos in the future and thank you.

Looks like Saranda has already grown a lot since I lived there during the Pandemic. I would think lesser known beach areas might retain their charm a little more? Korce' is great in the Southeast as is Pogradec along the beautiful lake Ohrid (oldest lake in Europe?) The mountains in the North are also fantasic but the real attraction is the people. I cant wait to go back!
And yes I have been in Albania before, just after removal and killing of Dictator Enver Hoxa, to make a journalistic photo essay. Found the place amazing in many ways, to see now the pictures of how it has developed, wow, congratulations, well done!

Dhermi is beautiful, but the mountain you have to drive over to get to it is massive and the road is very winding and slow to travel. I suspect in the winter Dhermi isn’t really easily accessible via road. Tirana, Berat and Vlore were all beautiful places to visit for different reasons. I’d recommend them for a visit to anyone. The airport in Tirana is so easy and accessible too.
There is no problem in the winter as it does not snow there. The first leg of the trip to Dhermi, on the scenic route of Llogara Pass, it will soon have an alternative through a 6 km tunnel, through the mountain, that has just started to be built and it will shorten the trip by 50 minutes.
Albania looks really great tbh. Looks like its great to start a freelnace IT business there as well, but I cant seem to find any info on crypto gains taxation there. Anybody can suggest any information on that?

I absolutely agree. They are already a member of NATO.
Not for the next 20 years and by then Albanians will change their mind. We don’t want to adopt the euro but keep Albanian LEK. As things will get more expensive. NATO is a different story we are very close politically with the US and UK hence that’s why we joined NATO not to mention NATO saved our gooses during the Kosovo war. I don’t think you need to worry about Albania joint EU now in 15-20 years who knows but the way the world is heading is difficult to predict the future

If you buy through proper channels you should be all right. As of now, it looks like Vlora is a bargain. For a Westerner, Saranda is great too. Not to ignore the upcoming billion dollar transformation of Durres in the next 2-4 years.
Btw, I was born in Albania but have been living in the US since I was a teen (in my mid-40s now) and these are the towns I am looking at for myself.
Well there is always risk everywhere even in the UK I had a problem when considering buy an investment property. As long as you do your due diligence and get a local lawyer to do all the check. The government have really crack downs on irregularities now. You agree a price, you pay a deposit or full money that is held by the lawyer or Notary then when the certificate of property or deeds arrive to your lawyer from the local land office then the lawyer transfer your money to the seller. Also the lawyer will do due diligence on that property with land registry to make sure everything checks out

@@nickhowden686 haha no that doesn’t happen anymore Albania is liberal democracy and capitalistic. The scenario you mentioned happened during communism era in the 60s and 70s. You can’t just confiscate people properties and houses is illegal. There are occasions that if your property is on a way of a major project like building a highway the government will make you an offer based on market price for that property. But they can’t just confiscate it that is illegal under Albania law and EU law which Albania has singed in to

After living in Tirana for 4 months, I found it hard to retire or invest. Easy to get visa and reside but you will be feeling stranger and outsider all day long. As long as you are loaded with a lot of Euros 💶 and Dollars 💵, you would find people in Albania 🇦🇱 speaking your English, otherwise is better to just visit and forget investing and residing feeling alone most of time.

How is the health care in Albania for people in their 60’s so much conflicting information.
Make a video on the best places to live to avoid lockdowns. Seems like in some places it's gonna be stuck on this pattern of locking down every winter for all eternity (I'm in Canada).
Canadian politicians as well as EU states are lefty extremists. avoid places like that for your future if you appreciate freedom. Albania could be the answer.

Maybe not. Once you reach an age when health care is more likely to be an important issue, you may want access to a health care system rated higher than Albania's. (Around 85th last I knew.) At any rate, it is not one of Albania's strong points.
P.s. Albania is not part of Europe yet even though it has applied for its candidacy in 2009 but according to European countries, it does not meet the essential 12 points required by European parliament. It is still making tremendous efforts to be part of it. The currency is the Albanian LEK (ALL). That being said, it's still a very beautiful country where properties are still cheap compared to the rest of Europe.

Unfortunately corruption is present but at high levels and hidden. However that is changing with the new anti Corruption organisation SPAK . I would imagine things would be similar with Bulgaria and Romania

I never thought about Albania I know loads in London and they certainly have no desire to move back which is probably down to lack of job ops , most of the ones I know pretend they are Italian haha , they also moan about their corrupt government not that UK is much better in that dept ,, Mexico still winning for me in terms of freedom loving destinations , thanks for the vid
Honestly same here. Originally from Serbia and spend whole life in austria and germany. Never moving back. Balkan is beautiful and i visit my family but working there is miserable for 400€/month. When in germany you earn 5-10x that amount.
We (Albanians) do seem to suffer a bit of an inferiority complex, thus some of us claiming to be Italians. lol. Afterall, it is pretty tough to wake up one day and find out that instead of being number ONE in the world (as per communist propaganda), we were a solid last in Europe. But, don't take what they say literally - some Albos do have a flair for dramatizing their experiences.
In any case, it is different for foreigners who do not carry the same (experience) baggage that we do and do get to enjoy Albania for all it's worth.
As far as not wanting to move back, I can only share my experience as someone who left Albania at 15 and has been living in the US for most of my life (mid-40s now), subconsciously I feel and know my quality of life would increase were I to move to Albania now but I don't want to uproot my family and start over again. @@Kokoroko9 I hear you (about the wife's house and all). 11 years ago I moved to Philadelphia, for my now-wife, from NYC area where all my family and friends live. The idea was to spend a year or two here and then we both move back. Well, it's been 11 years and Philly is now home :).
I don't have any close family in London but know a few: one owns a restaurant (don't ask me where and what's called, haha), one owns a hair salon, and a couple actually moved from the US to London to work in the City. If I were able to do it again, I would have loved to do the same given how close it is to Albania and the rest of the continent but my profession, tax/accounting, is less transferable than, say, finance. Too late at this point anyway. But, it is a lot easier to buy coastal property in Albania and enjoy the holidays from London than NY or Philly.
In any case, this is turning into an essay..haha.
Honestly videos like this is driving cost of properties up, I really hope that we never join Europe and the f....government understands that is small country and they can just let investors pure concrete all over the country.
