White Desert (known as Sahara el Beyda) - a national park of Egypt and 45 km north of the town of Farafra, the main draw of which is its rock type colored from snow-white to cream.
Being around the rare landscape and beautiful geological formations, it really feels like we’ve traveled into space.
The desert was once a seafloor million years ago. When the ocean receded and a plateau collapsed, layers of sedimentary rock were revealed. Some stone formations have withstood the test of time, giving the White Desert its particular characteristics and beauty. Following an ice age 30 million years ago, these chalk-like outcrops were created by tectonic uplift driven by wind and sand erosion, and countless sandstorms have continued to alter their shape ever since.
During the full moon, the chalk-white rocks reflect the bright moonlight, bringing the limestone shapes to life.
