Netgear WAX610... amzn.to/3Hv9JJA Let me know what you guys think. I'm super excited after getting cable pulled and having these installed correctly (the old large boxes made this difficult). (affiliate links)
Good review for most features, but would like a follow-up on the ssh configuration capability and also whether or not you are restricted from setting the transmit power (you covered this on the last AP review).
@@Nobody12409 Yes, power limits can be controlled under the Configuration > Wireless > Basic > Wireless Settings section shown around 5:46. The setting is expressed in percentage, options being 4%, 12.5%, 25%, 50%, and 100%. I still haven't figured out the SSH item - I'll post back if I can get that one sorted.
Hi, this is great overview! You always point something important in settings I would not find myself! Thanks! I have 3 floors house. Would you recommend one on each floor since you mentioned it picks us great speeds from another floor? And would you keep each floor access point under different name?
Thank for these reviews, I looked at your other video initially for the 2xx series, I like this one more to prevent disconnections,... I had a question though; I can see you have 2 APs, why not making both serve one SSID in bridged mode? any issues? thanks
Thanks! Looks much better than the other Netgear access point you tested. Do these devices have a feature that automatically puts the access point into standby when no device is connected? (Not sure how this is called)
Yes sir, much better for sure. It has a mode they call "Energy Efficient Mode". You can see the tab at the far right at 5:08 but I didn't cover it in the video. It says the following "If EEM is enabled and no WiFi clients are connected to the access point, antenna stream operation is limited to 1x1. If a WiFi client initiates a connection to the access point, the antenna streams resume normal operation."
I appreciate the feature overview - have you had a chance to look at the EAP610 line of TPLink devices? How would you pit this up against the TPLink? Thanks!
That would depend entirely on what the floor is made of. In my standard wood-framed house, the APs on the first floor still provided excellent coverage all throughout the basement floor.
@@HomeSysAdmin After reading several reviews, I have a feeling the WAX610 might end up being returned. If even a few of the negative comments are accurate, I’m in for a huge disappointment.
@@HomeSysAdmin Thank you... Great Video: I usually install Unifi WAPs, but I needed a WiFi Solution (Business Grade) for some home clients who do not want to buy/install a pricey router and want to stay with the ISP-provided router. And this router works perfectly for that, and in the case that the customer later on would like to segregate their network these WAPs will work as well. Since my question, I have installed already 4 of them. Again Thank you.
Great Video, i am in process of purchasing the netgear wax610 so it was very helpful. I see that you have home vlan & guest vlan. When you connect the ethernet cable from your managed switch to the Wax610 does the access point pickup the vlans id & port? As i have 2 ports Home & Guest. I am a little confused which port to connect the ethernet cable. I'd appreciate your advice.
The switch port that you connect the access point to needs to be configured to tag the vlans you want to pass through to the access point. This is different from the access vlan, which untagged traffic is assigned to and I think is what you're referring to with the 2 ports you have currently (home, guest). Timestamp 11:28 in the video shows how I have the home and guest vlans tagged on the ports which the access points are plugged in to.
I followed your instruction and now i can use IOT vlan the Guest Vlan i an unable to log onto . I have checked the ssid and both are identical except for the vlan tag. On timestamp 5.21 I change management and untagged to my 50(IOT). This is why i think IOT vlan works. Do you have any ideas ? As it is not give me an ip address from DHCP ?
@@HomeSysAdmin At @6:36 you have screen open on the Wireless > Basic page and it shows an option for Schedule: Always On, Always Off, Custom. I assume that Custom will allow you to set ranges of time on certain days of the week. For example, if you only wanted the WiFi signal broadcasting between 5:00 and 10:00 pm at night, through this setting you would be able set that up. I really hope that's what it does because I just purchased this model assuming that was the function.
@@ipanonymously9503 Ya know, I went through every screen checking before I wrote that response and somehow I missed that... Sorry. It allows scheduling down to the hour for each day of the week. Here's a screenshot of the interface offgridbytes.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/07/Screenshot_1.jpg

I'm weird. I hate that the wireless Mac can't be spoofed. My neighbors use Synology. I know that because it's broadcast on the ssid Mac. If hacking is the goal, that's a big headstart. I ddwrt all my routers. As far as thruput, I haven't been able to measure any difference in different technology. Ac and n is the lowest I set mine to

Great video, very complete yet couldn't have been delivered faster, no filler, thanks so much.
Thank you for your detailed info on this system...
Great video! Keep up the good work! 👍
Great Video thanks !
Did you figure out why the SSH was not available ?
It's a feature that's been removed. From what I read online, it sounds like it was never supposed to be there. I'm not sure otherwise.
@@HomeSysAdmin ok thanks for your feedback

Someday I will replace my old dlinks this looks like a good one.
Oh man that brings back memories. I still have my old pair of Dlink DI-524 here from the DSL days (phased out in 2010). Ha.

Cool video !!!! is there any video that shows how to setup meshes with such access point ?????
Not on my channel at least. I don't plan on connecting them to the "cloud" which is required for mesh networking.
Great Video, Question: Can you use the WAPs without VLANs? just straight from the native VLAN 1?
Yes, you do not need to configure vlans if you're not using them.

Does the software administration allow you to set the access point onto a timer to turn it on or off on a schedule?
No, it does not have any scheduling functionality.

@@HomeSysAdmin Awesome. Just what I wanted to see. Thank you very much!
Thanks for the info.
Do you know if the WAX610 supports TWT (target wake time)? Haven't found it in the manual but maybe it has a different name?
It does according to their datasheet, see page 2 at the top-right section www.netgear.com/media/WAX610_tcm148-90787.pdf

Can you manually block specific clients?
Yes. You can build access control list under Configuration > Security > MAC ACLs and add the offending MAC addresses.
Great stuff
Even though they insist IPV6 will be bridged and available, I haven't had any luck getting it to work. Very irritating!!!
How do you acquire the IP address of the device?
If there is no DHCP on your network, it will come up with 192.168.0.100. If there is DHCP, you can check your router or DHCP service for the address.
