He is and for something like Flux I feel he’s probably at his best where he can set up things and concepts that are cool, do them and let off-screen assumptions fill in the blanks so he can focus on the fun in the story. Flux has a lot of storytelling flaws, but I won’t lie it is a realistic fun B-movie sci-fi adventure.

The main reason Diane turning Dan down falls flat for me is that all she says is, "You were late." There's never any acknowledgement that, yeah, he was late, but he was kidnapped and taken into space right before the Sontarans invaded and occupied Earth off the back of a universe-ending catastrophy while Diane was imprisoned in Passanger - maybe it's just me, but if I had that context to bear in mind, I'm not going to hold it against someone for being late with everything else that was going on. If she'd said something to the effect of "This has all been too much," then I think the intent would've come across better.

When everyone heard that series 13 was going to be a serialised, there was hope that Chibnal would thrive (seeing that Broadchurch is well written compared to his standalone stories). But the fact that there was so much going on, yet hardly any of it was relevent or only mentioned once and the plot was just a confusing mess of these threads that amounted to nothing. There are still so many questions...
Why was Azure in a house in the Arctic Circle?
Who was the guy she was with in the Arctic Circle and why was he there?
How come the flux could destroy entire galaxies yet a layer of Lupari ships could pose as an effective shield?
If the shield only protected earth does that mean the rest of the solar system is destroyed meaning earth is now on its own in space?
Do people on earth remember the Sontarin's few day reign over earth in episode 2 and then wonder why they were back in episode 5?
*THIS IS ONLY FROM THE FIRST TWO EPISODES*

I bet the teenage Chris Chibnall wrote a Doctor Who story featuring the Williamson tunnels, and their somewhat redundant inclusion in "Flux" was simply because he wanted to bring one of his schoolday ideas to life. I know I would :)

Having now gone through Series 11, 12 and 13 plus the specials so far, my verdict is this: Chris Chibnall may love Doctor Who, but he is a bad writer for Doctor Who. And the more he tries to do spectacular stories, the more he reveals that his stories are either nothing special or so full of everything that you can't make sense of it. I have nothing against the man (barring the whole Timeless Child crap and the millions of Doctors we never knew about and so on). I give him credit for believing himself to be a great Doctor Who writer. He believes he is Mozart, but he is really just Salieri - the Patron Saint of Mediocrity. I will wish him well when he steps down and I hope that will be the last I see of him.

I am certainly more positive of Flux as a whole than most people. Covid certainly harmed many aspects but I was never bored during a single episode. So that has to mean something for me. A very satisfying review to a highly unsatisfactory episode. I was actually kind of worried for this review, as I've always had an inkling that in an effort to be fair (and to not be Bowlestrek) that Mr. Tardis gave Chibnall way too much benefit of the doubt, but this review really nailed all my complaints on the head, and added new ones. One of the strangest reactions I've seen to this finale has been, "oh for how many different threads it had to tie up, sure it was messy, but for how much there was, it was better than it could have been" and my response has been the same as Mr. Tardis, that Chibnall was the one who added all those threads in the first place! I liked elements of flux, the sontarans being my favorite part of the series, but this super messy conclusion has damaged the series for me. Probably still Chibnall's best overall, but very flawed.

Why not simply not have Swarm in this at all and have Azure be in alliance with The Grand Serpent? He could have been the one breaking her out of imprisonment to carry out the plan… whatever it ultimately was!😂

  • @MrDarthT
    @MrDarthT 2 года назад +2

Azure's scene with The Doctor, and the fact that Time is a being who has been imprisoned, implies that Azure and Swarm aren't "rebelling against the natural order". The universe, in its current state (at least, before The Flux), is an artificial status quo that Division, and now The Doctor, are knowingly maintaining through the(possibly wrongful) imprisonment and exploitation of "Time" as a person.

  • @keirjarvie6998
    @keirjarvie6998 2 года назад +2

Sorry to say MrTardisreviews and anyone else that enjoyed this finale, I didn’t. I thought it was a mess and ended Doctor Who Flux on a big whimper. But rather making this comment into a complain fest, I’m going to be constructive. Chibnall has given me little to no reason to be invested in the Timeless Child story. In fact, the vibe I got was “This storyline needs to be retconed.”
So here’s what I think could’ve maybe be done.
In the Timeless Children, everything about the Tecteyum finding the Child and being the Genesis of Time Lord society, is still the same. Here are the differences.
In Sound of Drums, it was revealed that Time Lords get their Regeneration energy by looking into the Time Vortex. It was built on even further when in A Good Man goes to War, the reason why River Song (or Melody Pond) could Regenerate is because she was conceived by Amy and Rory in the Tardis when it was in flight in the Time Vortex during their wedding night. So, with the Child being the reason why Time Lords could Regenerate, here’s something I’ve come up with. Yes, the Time Vortex can give Gallifrians the ability to Regenerate. However, it was extremely difficult and was not advised a lot of the time due to staring into the vortex can cause someone to lose their mind. So with the Child able to not only Regenerate right away, but also having infinite Regenerations. From experimenting on the Timeless Child, the Time Lords are able to get Regeneration energy much much easier.
Now for the Doctor himself/herself. In the Timeless Children when in the Matrix, the Master would have revealed to the Doctor the both of them were high ranking agents working for Division and they were tasked with protecting the Timeless Child. Both the Doctor and Master would have been given a new set of Regenerations every time they use up their twelve. I feel like if that info was revealed in the Timeless Children, then Flux would have explored it more. Plus, if the Master worked alongside the Doctor with protecting the Timeless Child, then the episode title, The Timeless Children (plural) would have made loads more sense.
Then cut to the Vanquishers when the revelation was expanded upon even further. There would be a flashback scene when the Doctor is in his William Hartnell incarnation. It would have been revealed that he let the Timeless Child escape Gallifrey and with the Time Lords hunting him, that would have caused him to escape Gallifrey. That falls in line with the Doctor leaving Gallifrey because he was bored as revealed in The War Games. I was also thinking when he and Susan get into the Tardis and leave Gallifrey, he would use a Chameleon Arch to remove any knowledge he has of the Timeless Child and task Susan with getting rid of the Fob Watch after the Chameleon Arch process is finished. After that; Susan throws the Fob Watch out into space. Hoping that it will never be found. Only for it to end being in the possession of Tectayum later.
Honestly, I think if the Timeless Child revelation was like that, I think it would have been faaaaaar faaaaaar more interesting than what we ended up getting in the end.
Also with that hypothetical flashback, they could get David Bradley to reprise his role as the 1st Doctor. Or if they wanted to take it a step further, actually use William Hartnell’s likeness through a motion capture performance. Just like Peter Cushing’s likeness being used for Grand Moff Tarkin in Rogue One.
But alas, we are where we are.

Considering the difficulties this season even had getting to the screen I'm grateful we at least got an ambitious season that was immensely fun even if it didn't all come together. Under normal circumstances a lot of the flaws could've been increased with more screen time and episodes, and for every flaw The Vanquishers has there's a huge positive (Jodie being proactive, great Sontarans, amazing cinematography, genuine emotions at time). A mess, but very much Chibnall's Journey's End.

You're that alot of the flaws could've been solved with more screen time but the majority of the screen time and plots were unnecessary and didn't amount to anything. So they could've made more screen time by cutting plot threads (like Bel and Vinder)

Nothing in any of the six episodes made any sense. The Doctor was a passenger in the events. She was moved about in time and space by unseen forces. The Flux was adsorbed by the Passenger, but was not the Passenger a mercenary working for the Vanquishers? By then the Flux had destroyed most of the universe heading for Earth. But the Dogs had a technology that was a defence against the Flux. Did no other civilisation have such a technology? The Daleks, Cybermen and Soltarans were less technologically advanced than than the Dogs!!!! This show is rubbish.

The thing that bothered me the most? *This* was the first serial of Nu Who. It would be akin to the Sea Devils and Sisterhood of Karn, showing up in the final two episodes of The Invasion.
There are at least six characters too many in the entirety of Flux. Dan & Karvanista (as a double act) are the only worthwhile additions. Swarm was great. Azure amounted to a generic wallflower for most of this. Both were thrown under the bus for the finale too.
The one potentially interesting long term plot thread I'd like to see come from Flux. A change in the status quo of the Sontarans. Becoming hunted by Daleks, Cybermen etc for what they did here.

    Flux didnt disappoint,
By that I mean it was exactly as I thought it would be. Some interesting ideas and characters setup, with 1 great episode in the middle; but overall a very average season of tv.
Normally i would write a massive essay on each of its components, but honestly i dont even have the energy to do that. All i am waiting for is RTD2 so we can be done with this era of the show.
Ep1:-I thought this was pretty good. I liked Dan and all the setup was decently done. Also the Lupari are probably the best thing to come out of the chibnall era.
    6.5/10
Ep 2:-This was a genuinely good episode. I liked the Sontarans and Mary Seacole. The battle was a amazing thing to see in doctor who.
    7.5/10
Ep 3:- Here is my controversial opinion of this season, this is the best who episode since twice upon a time. I love the concept and it was executed really well. Sure there were some negatives(mainly Yaz's sisters dialogue).
    8.5/10
Ep 4:-This was a mixed bag. On the first watch i LOVED the siege of thw angels, everything else i found pretty good. But after thinking about it, the angels were very nerfed. Still it definitely has more good than bad
    6.5/10
Ep 5:- This was the episode that just left me dry. I was so dissapointed eith pretty much everything. This was a bad episode.
    3/10
Ep 6:-A slight improvement over the previous one. The only reason i think of this as an improvement is because I was expecting another timeless children. The doctor killing all the sontarans made me furious. It was nice to see Kate but she didnt do anything. Thw Serpent wasted, the swarm wasted, etc
    3.5/10
    So 2 words, Wasted Potential.
Sidenote am I the only one mad about the fact that the special is call 'Eve of the Daleks'. Couldn't they find a word starting with 'Re' and ending with 'tion'?
Well atleast its over now. Hope RTD2 beings us some great doctor who.

This finale was messy... but a FUN mess! And I enjoyed it on initial watch but loved it more on rewatches, much like the rest of this series actually! And I think it was quite satisfying which like you said in this review is rather impressive! Every recurring character from across the series was important in some way and they all came together which was fantastic to see! Though I do think there are still some threads unanswered which some are very obviously going to come into play in the specials and speaking of which I know people have said that Kate doesn't do much which I can see but while I would of liked to see more I am okay with this since she is very obviously going to return again - probably in the Centenary. But yeah overall I loved this finale, even with all its flaws and I absolutely loved all of Flux from start to finish, a real rollercoaster and it is impressive what Chibnall and his team have accomplished considering the circumstances and i am beyond grateful Great! Great review as usual, Mr TARDIS.
Now onto Eve of the Daleks which as much as I loved Flux I am glad will be much smaller in scale with just one main location and a small cast, it looks cracking so can't wait for that!

I 100% agree with it being a load of fun. While it was an absolute mess. I had a ball through every second. Which is why it's my favourite Chibnall finale. Ranskoor Av Kolos just kind of exists. The Timless children is kind of boring to sit through as it's basically 50 minutes of info dump. But The Vanquishers is a load of fun. The visuals are also stunning as per usual with this series. Sontarans in Liverpool gets better both times we see it. The TARDIS on The Albert Dock at the end was amazing(been wanting to see that since I was a child). The score was pretty good too. I haven't delved into that yet but Segun Akinola hasn't disappointed this season at all.

@@AlexRooneyComposer Absolutely loved the Sontarans this series in both this and War of the Sontarans and I must admit it is really awesome that after 40 years the Sontarans actually get a finale - the last time that happened was Invasion of Time! And it seems they are being put on the same sort of pedestal as the likes of the Daleks and Cybermen (as they should). And oh yes, the Albert Dock scene looked JUST as good on screen as it looked when they filmed it, absolutely brilliant and yeah, Segun Akinola deserves a lot more appreciation than he gets, I think he's utterly smashed it this series (and I loved his work in Series 12 and 11 too though this is definitely his best stuff!) and I have so much adoration for him, he's done a brilliant job and it is a shame he doesn't get the appreciation by fans that he deserves (as he's not Murray Gold - who don't get me wrong was brilliant in his own right and I have a lot of love and respect for him as well but because he was with the show for so long I do think a lot of people aren't used to not hearing his music?!)

10:17 Yeah, why did he do that?
11:27 Glad I'm not the only one who was bothered by that.
P.S. The Earth might have been shielded by the Lupari shield, but how did the flux not wipe out the sun? Pretty sure that would have been the final nail in the coffin for life on earth if it had.
16:13 I did enjoy this scene too.
    21:00 Seconded.
    21:30 Yeah, that's what I thought.
    22:49 Don't jinx it!
23:59 I did like Williamson's dignified exit, even if it was effectively him leaving because the story needed him to leave. I hope we get one more story with him in his tunnels at some point so he gets more time to shine.

25:52 Did anyone else notice the 80's Cyber gun sound effect when the Cyber ships teleported in?
30:55 There is literally nothing to stop the Doctor from opening the watch and getting her memories back at this point! The villains have all been defeated, the flux has been dealt with and everyone (except Jericho) returned to their own time. You could literally end this season with the Doctor opening the watch as a segway into the next story where she re-discovers her past and we can actually get this subplot over and done with!

I think you got it backwards, but admittedly it's poor storytelling. Dan meets Karvenista and makes jokes, and then the next scene is Dan explaining the deaths to Yaz. Also, in the proceeding scene, Karvenista already had it out with the Sontaran. Obviously, Karvenista tells Dan what happened.

A place that is remarkably close for the luparie fleet to be present but not the earth, which needs the protection of self same fleet to not be wiped out.

I enjoyed flux overall. There are many messy bits, I'm not blind but I still have fun with it. I think the last 2 episodes especially, you can really see the production issues and last minute changes that had to happen to get this made.
I'm not a massive chib fan or detractor, I like bits and I don't like bits. But there is no way he is this sloppy. It was clearly cut short by bbc/covid/cost/time and there are lots of things dropped and skipped. But having said all of that, I enjoyed it still! 2 brilliant episodes 2 good and 2 average. Yeah, I agree with almost everything you say here. This has SOO many flaws and misplaced opportunities and needless plot threads, but still feels like a good finale?? Would've loved Joseph Williamson to have more of an explanation, perhaps last episode could've been either a doctor lite or Dan, Yaz and Jerico could've met Williamson and they worked together to create the tunnels as part of some plan to stop the flux, because they're such a cool device that just... didn't need to be there?
Also, while I laughed at the gossip-hungry south sayer in the episode, why we called back to that instead of giving those two something to talk about is really really wierd. Also, this is before Karvonista has even done anything, so... how was he right???
Like you said in your first review, I'm really not sure why Di is pissed at Dan for missing his first date when, and someone correct me if I'm wrong, the world got invaded by Sontarans and she got kidnapped by Azure, so she wasn't there either??? Really not sure how she can blame Dan for being absent when Dan was also kidnapped. If the message they were going for was that given time to reflect, some couples don't work out, then that's great, but there really wasn't any exploration of that. Like, she didn't say 'I had a lot of time to think' she said 'you missed the date' so... yeah. at least we had Belle and Vinder to make up for it and wow I loved those two, what standouts this series.

    • @itskashkashi
      @itskashkashi 2 года назад

I saw someone say that Di might have refused the date in the end due to trauma. She's been through a lot and just can't right now.
What I don't even know how to head cannon away though, is why on earth did they even kidnap her? Lol they went out of they way to do it.... just to mess with the doctor's future companion? If we get answers in the specials ok, but ad of right now there's too much that makes no sense at all lol, and believe me I REALLY tried to like it. For the most part I did enjoy it. Just... can't think about it too much 😅

My general opinion on Flux has been that it's a somewhat poorly pieced together story, but it's incredibly fun to watch. Hopefully the specials are as fun to watch and don't have to suffer from having so many plot threads to resolve in such a short space of time, because there are enough bits of Flux to tell me that we CAN get some really amazing stories here but juggling plot threads as much as this has isn't where Chibnall is strongest.
