Girl I applaud you for having the guts to go on a new path! Don’t give up your RN license though because nursing is much more than bedside nursing. I am and RN who got into IT and I can tell you there are so much you can do. I’m now in bioinformatics and I love it! My RN background is equally important as my CS skills. RNs rock in bioinformatics, clinical research, pharmaceutical IT, medical IT, the insurance industry and much much more. You are not just any IT professional, you are an IT professional with a specialty. And that’s so powerful in the IT field! I used to think my 4 years of undergraduate nursing education went to waste but no, it’s the foundation of my bioinformatics career!

Could u tell me what you do in bioinformatics and did u need anything else other than your nursing degree? Should I continue my RN and then go into bioinformatics?

Yes, totally agree, the family "academic pressure" starts very very young in Asian household...even if our parents are cool but the aunties are OMG !! They not only ask your grades straight up but rank you amongst cousins....its is so so stressfull...Nowdays the "aunties" are now "grandmas", you would think they would slow down...but nooo, at family gatherings they will start all over again and pull up ranks of our kids now...the stress level of my generation is at max !! My gen is stuck between the older gen vs the milinium gen... sooo much headache to juggle between the two gens...😅😅😅😅

It's so refreshing to hear you talk more about yourself as I've always watched those short clips of you and Andy, so I feel that I got to know more about you from this video. My sister is a nurse and I hear all about the stress involved with the profession. I'm not a nurse, but I also work in healthcare and although I love my job, the hospital setting is not fun. I'm lucky to work with good colleagues in my clinic, but admin and mgt is a pain. I left my day job early this year and opened my own practice which was super scary because I grew up in an Asian household where there's a lot of emphasis on having a secured, stable job. No mention of being a business owner. But I'm glad I made that decision because it's so liberating to have my freedom while continuing to do what I love without all the stress from a hospital system. I'm glad you made a choice that makes you happy because if you wake up feeling dreadful to go to work....that's definitely going to affect the quality of your life. Also glad Andy is your great source of support! Thanks for sharing!

As a student nurse and a PCT. I will be forever thankful to the nurses and supportive staffs on my unit. It honestly feel good to go into work knowing that as an aid I am viewed as part of the team. But I do see what other units are like when I transfer my patients onto the floor and it is just so sad. Honestly, by the time I graduate i will be in nursing school for 5 years and i really hope this new generation of nurses graduating will make nursing a much more tolerable field in a prespective where no one will feel alone and have anxiety before coming to work

Can’t express how true this is all is. I Just changed my career path to real estate after 20+ years of nursing and my family thinks I’m having a midlife crises. It’s just not for me any more. I did nursing for money, the passion I once had is gone after dealing with what comes with nursing. The stress, the disrespect, the work overload, the hours. Just not worth it to me. Good for you❤❤❤

My story is SO SIMILAR to yours! And I know you made this almost 2 years ago, but I want you, it means SO MUCH to me that you had SUCH a similar experience to me, and that I’m truly NOT ALONE. I am not the only person (despite my googling and youtubing) to not get their license, or use their nursing degree right after graduating. I graduated in 2019, and long story short, a lot happened leading up to getting into nursing school and during those first few months that set me up to have a hard time, and it was definitely a huge challenge. I loved parts of it, but hated a lot of it. I almost quit the summer between my first and last year of nursing school, but a peer tried to convince me, and I tried to convince myself, “nursing school is the hard part, it gets easier after this”, I watched youtube videos of people pushing through, and just convinced myself tonstick it out, get to graduation because I spent so much time and energy just trying to GET IN, its what I had been working towards my whole college career. I was worried I would regret quitting when I had already come so far. So I tried to push through and stuck it out. But like you, I had crappy experiences, and I think it just weighed me down. There were parts I loved, and I worked with TONS of great nurses, and honestly if not for them I probably would’ve dropped out. But I also worked with some not so great ones, some of my clinical professors were so harsh (I could see how it worked for some, but it just didnt for me), I HATED most of my hospital clinicals (My local university only had 1 hospital on that side of the island and it is not large, so some clinicals we had to make do in other ways, like PEDS or mental health. though I was lucky enough to get to experience one of the other Hospitals on the island that was SO MUCH kinder),I absolutely DREADED them. I had SO MUCH anxiety, and I was exhausted and depressed, and I just didn’t love it anymore. But I did it. I finished (miraculously! I literally wasn’t sure I was going to graduate til the DAY BEFORE PINNING). I took my sweet ass time getting around to doing my NCLEX and failed the first time. 2020 rolls around, I just moved back home to the otherside of the island and BOOM covid. Made doing my NCLEX SO MUCH harder. It didnt help that I STILL was not motivated for it anymore, but I promised myself I’d at least try, and see what I could do that wasn’t in the hospital. I liked aspects of my schooling, and wanted to do something either outpatient, maybe school nursing, or something to do with health education. I got a job as an RBT (registered behavior therapist/technician, I work with kids with ASD, its not perfect, and not my permanent place but I like it much more). I tried my NCLEX 2 more times. I failed both. In Hawaii (my home state, and where I had intended to work), you can fail 3 times, but after that, if you want to retest, you HAVE to take a remediation course, including clinical hours. I had a full on panic/anxiety attack in my car the second I read that. And that’s when I knew I had been deceiving myself. I finally was SURE that I ABSOLUTELY did not want to be a nurse anymore. It was both liberating and disheartening. I felt (sometimes still do) feel like a failure, like a loser. I have avoided using/posting on my social media for the past couple years because I didn’t want to deal with the questions I might get, or having to see my classmates post about their flourishing careers (don’t get me wrong, I’m immensely proud of them, and so happy for many of them, but I just couldn’t help but compare). My family tried to be supportive, but they were also kinda pushy in a way, questioning why I didn’t pursue it, “at least put it to good use”. It didnt help that at the time I really couldn’t answer the “why” questions, and I absolutely had no idea what I was gonna do (still don’t btw, currently just making due). It’s gotten better since then, and I’m slowly but surely learning to accept that this journey is mine, and its not supposed to look like anyone else’s. It’s ok that I’m almost 30 with no plan or career prospects, and I’m still single living with my parents (thankful however that I have a family that doesn’t judge that). It’s ok hat plan A didn’t work out. I’m right where I need to be for now. I regret not listening to my gut sooner, but I also don’t regret going through with it all at all, I’m where I am because of it, and one day it’ll all make sense why.
This was my ling winded way of saying thank you so much for sharing your story, and allowing me to also share mine and have someone to connect to about it. To anyone who might be going through a similar experience, know that you’re not alone, and there are other people who understand. Just do what’s right for you.

Michelle, great work. I definitely will say it takes a lot of will and courage to accept that things need to change. So really well done. I too am going through a career change with me doing almost 8 years in banking and now I too am studying IT all over again as an undergraduate. One thing I will say is when I look back from when I first got a degree I had no passion for now a degree I have an immense passion for, is that the work is so much more easier. The time you want to provide to study and learning more when you are passionate is not seen as something being given away begrudgingly but rather I now take it as a lot of fun. Kudos to you mate.

I am also a Nurse. This is one of the channels that gave me the courage to start my RUclips channel 7 months ago about self development. Now I have 702 subs and > 200 hours of watch time. I know it’s not comparable with others but I’m still proud I started because I’ve been learning so many lessons that I could haven’t learned without getting started in the 1st place.
This channel also inspired me to upload my recent videos to share my opinions about the main things that truly impacted the way I live. They're a couple of my most vulnerable videos that I've been hesitant to post for many months because of the fear of being misunderstood but I finally decided to overcome that fear so others can learn from my experience so we can all grow together. They're packed with valuable information about the relationship between a job and happiness.

    Hello Michelle!
I have seen your videos of you and Andy on Instagram mostly, discovered this one here.
Thank you so much for sharing your story. It’s so relatable.
I studied nursing back in 2017, first did Medical Assistant, then LPN to RN.
I had a bad professor that discouraged me and kicked me out of nursing, instead of teaching/helping it was like X factor where they kick you out of the show and you’re done.
In 2021 graduated from GMU with a degree in Health Administration concentration in management.
It’s ironic because I also work in IT. For two years now, I work as an office manager for an IT company.
When I was a kid I wanted to be a nurse, my reason at the time was to take care of people. After experiencing what it’s like, studying to become a nurse it’s daunting, intense and stressful.
IT was not my initial career path but I am loving what I do now. Life has a funny way of throwing curve balls but however the moments occurred it has let to the moment where I am today.
    Best of luck to you~

Then I started walking down the many paths nursing can take you and like you started to dislike my job because of others I worked with daily. This is a fantastic video and I really enjoy the conversations in the comments. It’s disheartening to see very few people praising the nursing or healthcare fields, or celebrating their own careers. I hope there are some who love their job. A lot of it boils down to the respect and determination you and your coworkers have for yourselves, your coworkers, and your patients if you work with patients. Work is stressful enough so it’s best to try to be as positive as possible and be a guiding light in a difficult field of work.

I really felt this hard. I spent my entire life thinking and prepping to become a doctor. I got to college, finished my degree in medical lab technology with the next step to go to med school, but by the time I graduated I realized I didn't want to keep going. I tried to push through and went to work in a medical office for a year as a lab tech, observing nurses and doctors and was treated horribly like you were. My friends that I graduated with had the same experience. I ended up switching out entirely and going into marketing at a chemical company. I didn't waste 4.5 years in university because I don't think I would have made these decisions if I had went about it any other way. So life has a way, its different for everyone and who we are today is a sum of all the different decisions and paths we took to get here. proud of you girl and get it!
I do apologize though, I thought you were going to say I went viral on tiktok so I quit my nursing job, which is still fine, but this definitely turned out differently than I imagined. proud of you. also nothing wrongwith quitting your job after going viral, all the tiktokers and RUclipsrs do it. hopefully one day you do get to do tiktok or youtube for your job, as it could be quite lucrative.

I can completely relate to this having worked with seniors for many years, and as a caregiver for almost 13 years. I lo e the 1:1 so much more, but I have worked in care homes, and saw what you are talking about regarding trying to fill beds in t least one place. They were accepting people that were obviously not right for the type of facility. It was heartbreaking, and I had to advocate for myself regarding staffing as well. Political s is real, and being short staffed is real. Seeing even csregi ers that do not care or even family members who do. It care is real. Granted I have been fortunate since doing 1:1 to see that most families do care. Also, when nurses come In or other healthcare staff, and the ones that look down on us because we are on a lower rung. We are Ll here to provide for thebcliant or patient, and justajebitbthrough thebday or nightbon those longer shifts. It shouldn't be this way.

Thank you for making this video. I'm surrounded by people and family who are in healthcare & they love it and are successful in it, and I left like I was alone in my resentment and negative feelings towards nursing. I didn't want to disappoint my family; I felt like I had to make it work because of all the time and money I've spent in school. I've been a nurse for 4 years now, and every year I hope and pray that it will get better and it never did. I took a short break to try out a coding bootcamp and realized it wasn't for me either, so I have to return to nursing for financial reasons :( I would love to hear more about your journey into IT! Maybe it would be a good fit for me too. Feeling very lost, but this video made me feel less alone.

Hi Michelle, I am a physician who works in a hospital with many nurses everyday. What you have said is sadly very true, and I sympathize with your struggles during nursing training. I see nurses as indispensable allies in health care with skillsets that complements physicians'. A good nurse is easily worth his/her weight in gold. I always stand up for my nurses when I feel that a patient is being rude or abusive. Kudos to nurses, especially ones working in hospital.

As a mom of 4 that grew up in a strict home I have always encouraged my kids to do what makes them happy. I never really had a choice in my life growing up and decided I didn’t want my kids to go through what I did. I have always told them that if they change their mind in what they want to do we will always support them. I always told them that if you do something you love them it doesn’t feel like work. My oldest just finished her first year of college my middles are in high school and my youngest is still in elementary. The middles still don’t know what they want to do but they do know they want to continue to college/university at least my daughter does my son is thinking of going into the trades. Whatever happens I’ll continue to support them and their decisions.
I hope my daughters end up with someone like Andy because he is a sweetheart and he cracks me up 😂the chemistry with you both is so amazing and I love all your videos. I pursued nursing and had got to junior year before i realized it wasn't something I wanted to do. I realized it when I started clinicals. The staff were awful. Some were borderline abusive. I did however remained a nurse's assistant (as I never graduated) at a hospital that was okay. I did that for awhile but realized that the pay was so bad. I could never save up as my entire paycheck basically went to groceries--that's it. I somehow ended up as a supervisor in a bakery.

IT is a really good field to be in because it’s such a diverse field and if you have some interest in computers, gaming, networking, security, coding, customer service, and just etc and etc and etc, you can get into IT. Technology is great and widespread. It’s a growing field and if you have a specialty, all the better. I like to get into coding eventually, but I’m more focused on system administration, server deployment, networking administration. It can be fun figuring things out and it’s very rewarding. Especially when you put a smile on the end users face knowing that you help fix a huge problem. I have so many examples but it is a rewarding field.
I was on a similar path as Michelle. Except mine was worse. I lasted too long without any guidance on what I wanted to do. I worked 25 years in a dead end job and unrelated to what I’m doing it now. The pay was good and great benefits, but the job suck!!!! I disliked the work environment and some of the guys I work around are a little too much. I worked with some great people at the same time but majority of the guys are not my cup of tea to hang out with.
I took a stand and flat out quit. I didn’t think. Just do it!!!!!! I didn’t know what I was doing lol. I was jobless for awhile and finally, opportunity knocked. I was hired into the IT field as an systems analyst and support. Finally a job or career path I was more into. I have so much fun playing with the latest products before it gets pushed out to the staff lol. Some days are tougher than others but what job doesn’t do that? You know? The reward is much greater and if you enjoy what you’re doing, it’s all good! I’m loving it and no regrets.
I often asked some of my former coworkers they need to branch out and do something they like. Their mindset is stuck and don’t want to leave.
So when I saw this video, she reminded me of, well, me. To Michelle, I know what you went through and from one IT professional to another, I’m very proud of you for doing what you did! And Andy would approve as well.

wow Michelle, as a graduated nurse I felt the same hardships you did and also repositioned myself as an IT student. Thankfullly my family was so supportive and everyone told me it was not too late to go and try to make my life the way I dreamed. Now I got my first job in IT and am so looking forward to things again. Many times I told myself that I should have done this 5 years ago, exatcly like you said, but you know, part of it is forgiving your "mistakes", cause they made the person you are today.
Have a great one, I hope you find happiness in this job, but if you don't, it's also fine i guess, we are not our jobs, lol
PS: just remind myself of this: sometimes before I went into my shift I would cry a little, then I would take deep breaths, just to get in the ward, cause the nurse that was responsable for me made me her bitch, yelled at me in front of all the staff, I felt like I was going into prison every time I steped into the ER (my chosen place and I loved it before all that). That was when things we're over for me. Bad nurses are the worse experience that a student can have when being introduced to the job... that's how stressfull and depressive she made the enviroment, and then I got into big depression...

Yes, I totally agree with what you said about nursing because I'm going through those bad experiences myself, and it is very discouraging. I have bad charged nurses, lazy cnas, and administrators who don't care about anything but money. No matter how hard you work, they do not see your values or appreciate your hard work and that's what I see and feel everyday going into work and I hate it. I hate being there, I hate their fake attitudes and I hate how they treat their patients there too. So then i decided to quit and applied to work with children instead while still in school. Thanks Michelle for sharing your experience :) I'm glad I'm not the only one that felt this way about nursing.

I just found your video and I really needed this. I'm south asian / Indian and I also grew up with that same lesson of "doctor/engineer/lawyer" and even nursing was not up there but they would accept it if it came down to it. So.. I went to med school because I genuinely felt like I had no other options or choices. Sure I like painting and gardening and reading books, but what sort of "respectable career" will you get with those? In my 3rd year now.. going into my 4th and really regretting it. Just... I feel like I gave up so much of my life to do this, only for a chance that MAYBE I'll get residency and the specialty I want... MAYBE. The amount of money, time, stress.. my health, my time with family... all that I've sacrificed really made me think I was in a gambling den and just giving more and more, all to make back everything I've given with a little icing. I have ended up in ERs while studying because the stress made me physically sick. I've had to move around for rotations and going back and forth between Canada and the States for the past 2 years (cause I'm Canadian, trying to get licensed in the US). Last month, my husband caved. He said he couldn't deal with the instability of our relationship and it was making him lonely and unhappy. He and I are taking a break and we might actually divorce because he did some questionable things to block out those feelings (another long story). It's really hitting me in the "Why am I really doing this? Do I even want this? Is it worth this much sacrifice?". I want to thank you for your perspective on this. I am really glad you had Andy at the time and you guys stuck together through such a time in your life. Lots of love and wish you the best with your youtube channel.

Michelle, I respect you so much for being so honest about why you don't want to go into nursing because I'm a Filipina-Am mom of 2. There's just way too much pressure for Asian-Am young people, especially, women to pursue nursing. I had wanted to be one but realized it wasn't a good fit for me. My dad just thought I should go into nursing because of the money. I'm a divorced mom of 2 (My oldest is 17 and my youngest is 12). I plan on focusing on raising them, heal from my divorce, help them do well in school (They're homeschooled), and go back to school hopefully in 3 years (2026). My ultimate dream is to be a UX Designer and possibly a UX Researcher even though I'm in my early 50s. I was the same way. Science was never my strong suit so I pushed myself extra hard when studying just to get a B or a passing grade on an exam. Even though I had a high teas score, completed all my prerequisites and had all my immunization requirements, I was just so burnt out that it affected my grades in the final months of my prereqs. That pretty much impacted my gpa and prevented me from getting into nursing school. Now my college career is completely different now although I’m still focused on healthcare and because I burnt myself out so many times im still trying to bring back my passion for learning. I guess the good thing is now im studying something that isn’t as time consuming and straining on my physical and mental health so im able to relax and focus on other hobbies to keep myself sane.

@@autumn399 I guess it really depends on which nursing school you get into. Some are more lenient than others. At the end of the day, the nursing field is still challenging regardless bc of all the memorization you have to do with anatomy, pharmacology and other science heavy courses. But if you have the passion for it then I’d say go for it unless you’re like me and wasn’t eligible bc of grades😅. I ended up switching over to public health mainly on a whim bc at my university the prereqs for nursing and public health were similar so I wouldn’t have had to waste another semester taking more classes. It’s still time consuming but definitely not as mentally tiresome as nursing. I’m graduating this spring with my bachelors and I’m considering getting a PhD with a concentration in epidemiology to focus on lab research.

@@autumn399 If you do decide that nursing isn’t what you want to do and medical school is out of the picture but you still want to focus on healthcare I highly recommend public health bc it exposes you to so many other health professions you might not even have considered. The only downside is that most public health jobs require at least a masters or higher if you want a specialized job like epidemiology or health administration so you’ll be spending more time and money in school. That is unless you find an undergraduate program that’s specifically epidemiology or any other public health field.

You don't need to work in a clinic setting to achieve success. In my county we have a program looking for nurses that go into homes and do a mommy baby visit 6 weeks after birth and that would be so much fun. You would be great at anything but consider a lateral movement rather than a complete change.

I feel her on what she's saying. I've spent my entire career doing IT even though I don't necessarily love it especially with the almost cutthroat office politics of lower-to-mid level IT work/jobs and relatively not-great pay. But being from south Asia, I too "had to" pick a career in a STEM field even though I've never been great at math and was better with arts and languages. But growing up dirt poor I didn't have a fallback so that I could choose a career that was difficult to immediately be hired out of school and/or didn't pay enough to support myself and my family. It took a long time for me to get enough confidence and motivation (and getting fired/laid off twice along the way) to work my way up to a more lucrative senior IT position with good pay and better flexibility. But I still don't think I'd ever be brave enough to buck cultural inertia and break away from a safe, "respectable" career.

I don't even feel like I am helping people in this field to be honest. I want to do a career change but I am so confused about what direction to take.

🤍wow the similar experience i felt, and it shocking that i have been thinking of doing IT recently and i come across your video when I opened my RUclips to listen to worship music and I see this! I was baffled by what your feelings are, are also “mine too.” And I remember seeing this video months back. I don’t know buh I think i saved it to my watch later but forgot and never went back to watch it. What I didn’t even realize that you are the person I watch on shorts lately on RUclips (your relationship with you and Andy). I love your shorts. Maybe because I never went back to watch this career video, i didn’t know you were the same person until now that I’m watching it.
If this isn’t a sign (being able to relate to you) on even wanting to change paths from RPN to IT from similar experiences in healthcare. I’m just so taken aback how I came across your vid when it just being less than a month i am having the thoughts of going back to school to potentially study IT and not gonna lie MAJORLY wanting to go back to school for the EXPERIENCE-cuz all my 2.5 years studying RON was during Covid and i studies in Avery small town, so didn’t enjoy college and get the experience of it like i imagined it should be, but I’ve being having my doubts, especially the low mindset of “can I do it,” can i make it studying a course that is not so easy and I didn’t take prerequisites of subjects in high school that kinda prepares me. Nevertheless I am glad you SHARED as it kind of giving me courage that we are thinking about the same thing and I’m quite sure you might not have had taken subjects in high school that prepares you for it, YET it didn’t stop you from taking a risk and pursing what felt right, what you you would rather have done. 🥀
I do wish at times my parents advised or suggested me do something in Technology or a career that flexible-where you can work anywhere and don’t really need people on standby over seeing you; something that won’t have drained me mentally and made me burnout so quickly before I have even taken my license exam; it was in my last semester (during PRAXIS) that i had a reality check if this is where I wanted to be. Apparently you never know until you’re placed in the field or the work environment on whatever your major is. That how you know if you see yourself here for the long term; it very different what you are learning in class and when you get to the work environment that how you know if you can fit in there or not. Well it takes you how many years of school, where your time and money has been taken and then they put you in the work environment and it a little too late to know what you’d have wanted to know before feeling depersonalized there🖤
However thank you again Michelle for sharing ✨

I am literally going through the same thing, not with nursing but had a job for the last 7 years where now I hate it and I am thinking of a career change to IT. Could you please share more about what classes are you taking if any? Thank you and you are not alone!

I was in nursing too, but I wasn't coping and became depressed and was fully exhausted, but I'm still in healthcare
