  • I found both Silver and Gold in this box!
    So - I'm hunting nickels for some silver war nickels, buffalo nickels, v nickels and shields! I picked another box of nickels and was super excited to get into them...
    In this video, I'll share the finds with you all - including all the silver and gold coins I found!
    Well, you'll see how much I got...
    Let me know how I did in this box - would it be a good box for your area? Better than average? Or just an average box?
    What do you prefer to hunt? Pennies, Nickels, Dimes, Quarters, Halves?
    What's your best score from a box of Nickels? Which of the "Big Banks" do you think gives up the best boxes?
    I hope you enjoyed the video!
    I plan on posting new ones weekly so please subscribe if you wish to see more.

    I've been a U.S. coin enthusiast since I was seven (back when wheat pennies could still be found in ones change). Nice to see the number of hobbiests returning to where they were then!
    I was casually looking at related utube vids on coins yesterday, and decided to subscribe to the one coin site I found interesting. Again today, casually watching coin vids and found only one I wanted to subscribe to...and it was you! Again! Just like yesterday, the only one I found any interest in subbing to.

    What's up bro? I just ended up with a box of uncirculated 2017's and when trying to figure out whether to sell it on eBay or just return it back to the bank I noticed one of the rolls has a 2013 ender... Why do you think that is??? How can this have happened? Any ideas anyone?

      Chrome - it happens sometimes. I just got a box of nickels that had 37 uncirculated rolls 2017 D. 7 of the other 14 were half uncirculated and the rest were anywhere from 10%-33% uncirculated - it's crazy!

    This bold Westward Journey nickel featured the first change to Jefferson's portrait in 67 years! Now enhanced with brilliant gold-plating, it features a modern close-up portrait on the obverse and a burly American Bison pawing the turf on the reverse. Plus, the inscription liberty on the obverse is based on Jefferson's own handwriting.

    It's nice that you have old coins in the US. Here in the UK, the coins are mostly new, with nothing older than 1971. That was when the UK decimalised, and many of the old coins were withdrawn. Those US nickels have a lovely silver sheen to them. Thanks for the video.

      Silver is silver. These are 35%. People almost always pass them up. Last auction I went to, I picked up 4 complete rolls of silver war nickels for 14.00. They were literally the only silver that got no attention. I'm a stacker as well. End of the day, silver is silver. God forbid everything goes down the toilet. They will melt just as easy as anything else

      Also there is Henning nickel that has gathered considerable attention recently. It's a counterfeit nickel made by a guy back in the 50s. Research it. They can fetch $300. He concentrated on 1944 and the giveaway is he left the large mintmark off them.

    The gold plated ("gold washed" is probably more appropriate) is almost certainly from one of the "private" mints around, trying to create collector value with stuff that ultimately really isn't worth anything OR, is a similar fashion, one of the late night shopping channels with the screaming idiots trying to create the same. They've done this quite a bit with state quarters, and all that came after the state quarters....plated a ton in gold, and also did plenty in platinum. Hell, even the U.S. Mint can't really seem to come out with stuff that ends up with any decent value, barring the precious metal stuff. To top it off, the quality began sliding down hill in the 2000s. I stopped buying mint sets at the end of the state quarter program.
    BTW, to clarify for your viewers that are not numismatists, the "silver" war nickels are 35% silver, 9% manganese, and 56% copper.
    You're one of the best roll hunters I've seen on YT, Rob....I'll be poking through your site for more. Having the scope on hand is excellent.

    Those are gold toned nickels, not plated, they done this with chemicals and heat, there are other tricks to get different colors, but I wont divulge in that! Gold plating makes the coin kinda blurry looking where the gold plate cuts down the sharpness of the stamping!

    Several years ago, while I was working as a manager for a pizza place, I discovered an entire roll of buffalo nickels in the coin order we had gotten from the bank. They ranged in quality from really worn to fairly decent. Is it rare to find an entire roll like that?

    Put the gold one on the tip of your finger and get a metal rod or something metal the length of an Allen wrench, if it makes a ringing noise it’s solid gold, if it just makes a quick ding it’s plated or something, or just take a magnet, if it sticks it’s plated 👍

  • @adamweishaupt5489
    @adamweishaupt5489 6 лет назад +7

    Yeah it's gold plated. Not really worth more than a nickel but it's still pretty cool. When I find them I give em to my little buddy. He just turned 12 so I'm trying to get him interested in coins. He doesn't get excited when I find a doubled die. I'll magnify it and show him on the laptop what I found and explain how it's doubled like what class it is and how to identify it with die markers and stuff. He just goes "oh yeah I can see it" and goes right back to looking at his phone. I'm like geesh, not easily impressed are ya buddy? I guess ya think everyone can just find a $100 or $1,000 coin every time they feel like it? If I could just manifest a car out of thin air would that entertain you? Haha he's a good kid though. But kids do seem to find things like the gold nickels and mint errors pretty interesting.

    • @RobFindsTreasure
      @RobFindsTreasure  6 лет назад +1

      I keep anything before 1960, but really - only anything from 1955 and earlier have value over Face UNLESS they are in really great shape or have an error or are one of the varieties, of course. Be sure to look out for the 1942-1945 Silver Nickels for sure!

    • @adamweishaupt5489
      @adamweishaupt5489 6 лет назад +1

      Mason Torster if it's silver, it should have a large mintmark on the reverse above Monticello building. The dates are 1942 - 1945. They started using the silver wartime alloy planchets around the middle of 1942; so some 1942 Jefferson nickels are of the pre-wartime composition. You can tell them apart easily by the positioning of the mintmark.

    • @adamweishaupt5489
      @adamweishaupt5489 6 лет назад +2

      A new discovery was recently made and although it's fairly unlikely, I feel I should mention that transitional errors did occur in which pre-wartime composition planchets were struck with the wartime alloy reverse dies. There have already been a few more found since the first one was spectographically analized, certified, graded, encapsulated, and sold at auction for IDK I think it was like $23,000. There is no telling how many are out there. Estimates are around 30 but some suggest it could be as high as 300. Anytime there is a transition in materials or design etc there are bound to be some very rare errors produced. My guess is that it's just easier to send through the planchets already on the line. I mean, that what I would do. Quotas got to be met and they ain't paying extra for plucking all those planchets out one by one. I would look both ways and make sure the supervisor wasn't walking down the line, and send em' through.

    • @adamweishaupt5489
      @adamweishaupt5489 6 лет назад +1

      Other things to look for are nickels displaying "full steps". Pretty self explanatory, try and count the steps on the reverse. It's a good indication of both the nickels quality of strike and die state, as well as the level of post mint damage it sustained from coin contact and circulation. Not all coins are created equal, is absolutely true and very evident when comparing nickels which are both in mint state. Many nickels started life with no steps; just one big ledge of metal blob where the steps should have been. This is due mostly to die deterioration from overworking, and from variation in the pressure if the strike which was received by the planchet while in the striking chamber. Other factors could account for variations which decrease a coins numismatic value, such as die coashes which occure when the hammer and anval make contact when a planchet fails to enter the chamber. The result is that some of the design from the Obverse die gets transferred to the reverse and vice versa. Sometimes this can produce some really cool error coins with interesting eye appeal, however usually it just further degrades the dies and makes everything look just awful. If you look closely, you can often read words both backwards and forwards in places they just shouldn't be. I say backwards and forwards because of double die clash and so on. Eventually the more times it happens the dies just get all kinds of screwed up looking. Nickel is a very soft metal and so is the copper that makes up the majority of the nickels composition (excluding the silver wartime alloy nickels of course) so that leads to lots of bag marks from when the coins are spit off the line and into large bags for transportation and storage. Coins which find themselves occupying a location near the bottom of the bag will have the most bag marks due to the massive weight bearing on them. Conversely, coins fortunate enough to hold a privileged position near the very top of the bag will receive very few bag marks. Another condition is mechanical doubling also called strike doubleing or just chatter. This ads no value and can actually deminish value if it's severe enough to detract from the eye appeal of the coins overall presentation. This is especially problematic due again to the metals softness. So taking into consideration those many conditions which will all have to been met against great probability before it even comes into possession of an individual, and add the unlikelhood of such a coin receiving little to no post mint damage from circulation, and what you end up with is what's called a "conditionally rare coin". That's what people who are not collectors don't understand and why they are shocked when they find out that a common coin that was minted in the hundred millions can be worth hundreds or thousands of times it's face value. So just keep that in mind when pouring through the nickels. You'll likely know instinctually when you see a truly conditionally rare nickel. Trust your subconscious mind cause it sees all and knows much more than the conscious mind can even process. If you have a good feeling about any coin you come accross, put that sucker somewhere safe and perhaps take a look at it in a few months or just whenever you notice your eyes are becoming trained to recognize a valuable coin. The more coins you search, you'll reach higher and higher plateaus in regards to your skills of observation. For instance, someone who has searched a substantial amount of Lincoln memorial cents can see the reverse of a coin in the tray at the gas station, and instinctually know if it's 60's - mid 70's, late 70's - 1982, or if it's mid to late 80's, and oftentimes know exactly what year it is and even if it's a variety of not without even picking it up and examining it. I first noticed this happening with 1983 cause it has a very distinctive appearance, but soon it was happening with most all coin types and years that I search. Anyway sorry about the long-winded comments. I love to write and I love numismatics so naturally the two will merge. So when I get on a good rant I just keep writing to see how much will come out. I then copy and drop it into a word doc. Eventually I will have enough material to publish something with a little bit of editing and some overall structural support to prop it up. So feel free to picky head about coins anytime. Peace!

      Be fun if when you worked in the mint before cameras to spread some errors around. Perfect coins, just wrong materials. So you can call them minted perfectly with no mint errors, but just wrong materials. Keep a few for yourself exchanging regular nickels for them.
