But, thank you for an excellent review. I bought Affinity and hated it. I just went looking for it and it is magically gone, replaced with version 2 necessitating a new purchase, but given how much I hated it, and how much I enjoy Luminar products on my computer, this was an easy choice.
Thank you Anthony for this review. I went to college back in 1991 to mayor in Photography Arts. This was back in the dark ages when Omega enlargers were a thing, developing film was messy and a pain in the rear end and cameras were analog and fully mechanical. When the digital age came along I felt lost and gave up on it. You have inspired me with your videos to get back into photography. I know have replaced all my analog equipment with digital cameras and bought Mac computers and Luminar Neo to play with and get back into what I love most. Thank you again for your wonderful videos!
BTW, I wish you had stated at the very beginning that it does NOT support RAW. That is absolutely essentially for my workflow and I had to watch to the end only to get the gut-punch realization that it wasn’t viable for my use case. With that one major caveat said, I still greatly appreciate your thorough walk through of the app as I could see it being an open sandbox for rough ideas… Cheers!
Excellent! I've used Skylum products from the start and like their products. Just downloaded this onto my iPad and LOVE it! Thank you for this Anthony.
Great review, although I’m not quite sure why the iPad with a streamlined OS and sharing the same chip as a desktop, can’t handle the more powerful features?
Perhaps it can. I know my own machine is a lot more powerful than my ipad pro however you're right, that's not to say it couldn't handle more features.
Interesting approach with this UI, quite nice. Yet for now a bit limiting. But I guess it is fine for the IG users (influencers...) :) but hopefully they will add some stuff in the future. Thanks for showing
Excellent review Anthony. Hats off to the Skylum team for some truly out-of-the-box GUI thinking! It looks like it'll be much easier to manipulate if you have a stylus. While I don't expect an iPad app to ever replace a desktop app, I'm going to hold off for now. Editing JPEGs doesn't interest me and I'll wait for them to add RAW support and masking. I did notice their (deliberate?) misspelling of "Monochrome". Are they trying to look Leica cool? 😉 Another important point to note is that the iPad version has no connection at all with Luminar Neo's catalog, though I think you can use their Luminar Share app (which everyone forgets) to shuttle images back and forth. Also, this app is not included in your Luminar subscription, so you have to pay extra for it.
I was very excited and downloaded it but I'll hold on till they bring an update so I can use raw files and sinc with the desktop version. Till than I'm fine with Luminar Neo on my mac and keep paying for my lightroom subscription.
Thanks very much for the review, most helpful! Overall it looks great and I'll check out the trial from your link. I'm cautious because two of the three cautions at the end are what I want in a mobile processor: RAW and local masking. We'll see. Cheers, pal!
Thanks for the comment, that was my question I was about to ask 😄. I think it’s a real bummer that the app does not work with libraries form external harddrives and raw images.
@@nataliiastebliy that is not true. Lightroom works on tablet+desktop with 1 subscription. So not everybody’s charging for 2 subs but everybody is investing money in their products.
@@nataliiastebliy I presume you’re not familiar with Adobe? They also have a pay to play licensing model. If you subscribe to it, you get a suite of applications that are cross platform. This is at no additional cost, as it’s part of the product suite and it adds value to their subscription. In fact, this model is most often employed as a suite. You’re correct, development costs for cross platform applications are higher. This is usually offset by the original monthly fee, or based on growing your subscriber base as you ‘value add’ to your product. I am surprised that this approach has been taken. Only time will tell if it was the right decision. Customers vote with their wallets.
Looks great except for no Raw editing or masking. You didn’t mention how to import from a card or your camera. I’m sure this would run great on my iPad Pro with the M4 chip.
I just downloaded it. 7 day free trial and under $30 for a one year subscription. OK so it can’t do local masking now but I would bet a future release will include it. Definitely worth a try. Thanks Anthony.
Nice one. I hope you enjoy it :) I'll keep you posted on developments with local masking etc as I know more. Currently I'm not sure if it will include masks in the future.
Earlier today I acquired an annual subscription. This tutorial is very helpful; this is a jump start to learning how to use Luminar iPad. As for a subscription, I like knowing that I will continually be updated to the latest version. Every time I buy a perpetual license, I end up spending the same or more because I end up paying for the new versions because I want the new features.
Thank you. Nice job, very helpful! I’m sorry if you have answered this question for someone else. When I finish all my edits, I don’t see a way to save my work, so that I can come back and do more work after working on another photo. When I go to open a new photo it says all my work will be lost. Can the app save your work so that you can come back to your last edits?
Any whispers about Android? I also liked the graphical controls. I wonder if they might offer as optional gui for desktop. Seems it was too much of an ask for loyal desktop users to get a discount. The company has gone fully subscription model also.
Same as I posted above - Well if you add up the Adobe photographer's package for two years you'll pay $240 ($9.99/month) but you can buy Luminar Neo for $119 for 2 years and the iPad version for $30/year so that comes to $179 total. Still 25% less than Adobe. So?
Yeah, to be honest this app already feels dead on arrival, since the mayor reason for me to switch to luminar neo was the local masking ( what is still for whatever reason not even slightly a thing in lightroom). The other k.o. criteria is no Raw files. I didnt bought an expensive dslm camera and invest all this time to edit properly just to limit myself to jpegs. Yes, this is all fixable in the future, but what i find almost insulting about that is the fact that they want to charge me again for a inferior version without including all my bought assets, luts and presets. I know this all maybe sounds a bit harsh, but i was waiting for a mobile version of Luminar for years and now get this. Im just very sad now.
I feel like you, though less harsh and not as let down. I wasn't hankering for an iPad version. I'll just stick with the built-in editor for my JPEGs and wait to see when they add masking & RAW support. It would have been nice if they included it for their loyal Luminar subscribers. Let's see if they offer a discount or anything.
Very useful video thanks. One comment however is that you mention there is no support for RAW images, but I have found it works fine with Apple ProRAW. Just thought I’d mention for sake of clarity - I do understand this is not the same as RAW from DSLR
@@AnthonyTurnham Ah, that's an important distinction! Because I thought I saw in another review they said "no Develop RAW support", but I could swear they opened a RAW file.
Hi mate. Depends where you're based. I'm in NZD so different price to USD for example. Just click bit.ly/iPadLuminar and it'll tell you for your region.
Didn’t you miss you can’t get to your file manager or sync to the desktop, I had it and didn’t think it was worth the subscription fee, only getting files from your iPad photos is a huge limitation don’t you think?
It should load Sony photos no trouble. Due to the way the app works it'll load the raw file and run a conversion initially so the iPad isn't crippled by trying to push around huge amounts of data. It's great for on-the-go editing but I'd still recommend saving your final edits for its big brother ( bit.ly/NeoSale ) on your main computer.
Looks like a great App. Asking subscribers to pay again seems crazy to me. Even Adobe steered clear of this. This would have been a great way to add value to a subscription, maybe even pull some subscribers from other ecosystems, but instead of this being part of a suite, it’s asking members to pay twice.
Well if you add up the Adobe photographer's package for two years you'll pay $240 ($9.99/month) but you can buy Luminar Neo for $119 for 2 years and the iPad version for $30/year so that comes to $179 total. Still 25% less than Adobe. So?
@@DigitalPhotoMentor So….What about Affinity Photo? If we are just looking at price. This is a fiercely competitive space. How many applications do you get in Adobe’s Photography suite? It’s great you love what Luminar are doing, and I’ve also been a supporter from the beginning. This is about a business model and its success. As I said in a comment above, people vote with their wallets. This hasn’t proven to be a great business model in the past. People want to streamline subscription services, not add more. My point was that they looked at this business model and voted against it in the end.
No masking, no layering, only work with iPad Photo repository , not linked to Neo catalog . Only plus point is the sky replacement, other than not much different from the iPad photo editor.
Great, going on a trip to Europe with cameras and lenses. I’ll take my iPad Pro with Luminar and an external HD. for storing and backup. This way I can publish photos on the fly. Looks like it could be fun when traveling, just one question , how do you get the photos on, is it just with an sd card and reader plugged in?
A few ways, but from a dslr or mirrorless a card reader with a usb-c connector is the way I've been doing it.
Airdrop, card reader, wifi or bluetooth direct from camera if your camera has that ability, all kinds of ways
The vignette is weird too. It won’t do it properly on a cropped image as it uses the full image. I’ll wait a bit I think. Great review.
