    Subscription models are bad for casual photographer who use the software only couple of times in a month. I still need to pay the subscription even when I do not use it. No not for me. I rather use some old ancient software which works without subscription than go into that subscription scam with any software.

    Great video. Very honest. I use Neo as my main editing tool simple it's so much faster. I am not a professional photographer and I don't have the time to spend hours editing one photo. All my photos go to social media. Nobody there can even see the difference. Look at your one video on RUclips and I can only barely see that Neo ist not as good on the highlight processing. I hope Neo get better as there are still so many things that definitely need improvement.

    I bought aurora hdr and luminar 4 I think it was names a 2-3 years ago. This company has a history of not being very well thought out and abandoning products. I still use Aurora hdr a lot as it is pretty darn good. I’m not buying another product from them to just be abandoned eventually. Also not going to rent my software.

    • @dane921
      @dane921 6 месяцев назад

      seriously though, the height of Luminars products was Aurora HDR, that app can produce some insanely good looking images, still one of my favorite tools of all time. But that was the last app they had that I could get a really good image out of in any situation that wasn't basically a studio lit photo shoot.

    I tried this yesterday after spending an hour in LR editing a photo, but still wasn't quite happy with the result. I was less happy after a windows update and restart wiped out all the LR edits and i had to start again. With Neo i was done in under 10 minutes. However comparing the LR edit to Neo, parts of the LR version seemed sharper to me. I am not sure if i need to add more sharpening to the Neo version. I also noticed that in Neo it removes any of the applied lens corrections and you have to apply them manually unlike LR where they are applied automatically.

    • @Seimstudios
      @Seimstudios  7 месяцев назад

      Neo is made to be a more amateur tool for those who want things automatic and does it pretty well. But the quality of the edit is better in LR. As for sharpening, those settings can be turned up and down in both.

    Great video - thanks! Do you still feel the same way about Luminar NEO? I am just about to buy it - they have a 70% discount for a 24 months subscription right now. Will I be able to use your LUTS in Luminar NEO? What else do you offer to enhance photos in Luminar NEO?
    PS: They added a Undo/Redo feature in the meantime...

      Good to here they finally got undo working, I'll take a look.
      yes you can use LUTS and they work pretty well in Neo, but my other tools won't work in NEO.
      I still feel it's behind and not that much cheaper than LR/PS. But what bothers me the most of the low grade handling of highlights that I showed here. If they got processing up to pro level standards I would feel a lot better about it.

      @Seimstudios  Год назад +1

    thank you so much for these insights. I learned a lot from you. Do you know, if I can import Fujifilm DCP camera profiles into Luminar Neo? I am using Luminar Neo and ON1 Photo Raw and Fujifilm X Raw Studio, for my files from the X-T3. I havent yet found a good workflow. You maybe?

    • @Seimstudios
      @Seimstudios  7 месяцев назад

      I don't think so. Thopugh I don't use Fuji profiles myself, I just apply a filmist preset in post to the RAW file. But both LR and Capture One have fuji profiles on my XT3

    • @KiR_3d
      @KiR_3d 3 месяца назад

      I have X-T3 too! After ~half year of using it I've decided to start digging into RAW... And I've found a surprize: Fuji originally process RAW with adding sharpen! Even if it's set to -4!
      I like how Astia colors looks from Fuji but I don't like how much sharpening it adds! Also their app needs to connect the camera every time and change settings inside it (and it can't be added to MY collection even) only to process RAW with these colors. Once I've done I need to change Connection settings again (so further it will be ready to connected to transfer files).
      I've tried Sharpen in LightRoom: it's good but it needs to be used very carefully with X-Trans sensors as it gives "worms" easily. Also Astia Soft v2 (which I get in my current version) does look completely different from the original Astia (in Fuji cameras)! It's even has a different curve for the contrast (not only colors).
      So I've started to search for something to resolve this. And seems that Luminar is more like a gimmick! If you're linked to buying some presets (which should be accepted by the company, right?) then you can't be on your own. Why do I need this? :)
      Also I'm not interested in AI features yet. It's a big big white spot on our map. For now we can only rely on "clouds". What if the Internet is broken currently? Or somebody will decide that your country need to be "under sanctions". Thus you'll not be able to even pay for this and use it in a usual way (without any proxys).

    Good points on Neo. I've been using it for a couple of years with all the updates and new generative AI tools (which are inconsistent in results) , and I find it makes a good plug-in for Affinity Photo or an old version of Photoshop that I have. I would not normally use it as a main tool. It's still too cumbersome for me, and not always that intuitive. I find Canon's Digital Photo Professional is a better workflow tool than Neo--at least for me--and you can't beat the cost--free.

      Won't help here. There can be no incorrect base profile in a RAW editing for pros. A constant baseline is essential, if it can't handle that it's not ready for prime time. But in this test other profiles made no difference anyways.

  • @ziv2liv
    @ziv2liv Год назад +6

    Thanks for the comparison. As a Luminar Neo user for the past year, I can say that Luminar Neo is a great software for any advanced hobbyist such as myself. It is extremely easy to use, it's full of features, it encourages to work with RAW files which other software make it intimidating and has the big advantage of buying "off the self" without paid subscription fees. However, if I was making a living of photography, no doubt I would go for Lightroom and photoshop. Also, Skylum offers some extensions that are extremely valuable, such as HDR, focus stacking, Supersharp and noiseless. As for presets, when I first bough the software, I used to use presets a lot. Now that I work with Luminar for quite sometime, I hardly use them. Sure, it helps for expediting workflow if you work with lots of images, but I personally use them less and less. I think the strongest advantage of Luminar Neo is the ease of use and the short learning curve.

    • @Seimstudios
      @Seimstudios  Год назад

      It is easy access, but the lack of processing quality concerns me. The problem with presets is they created the environment to not use them as they are clunky. I've been using LR for 15 years and I use presets on almost every phone even though I know how to do everything. Presets should be implemented in a way to make you try more looks faster as they are in LR. The more experience you have the more you know they give you more control. But the implementation in Neo is poor and that's a problem. Hopefully they take a tip from this video.
      Then again I stopped hearing from them since I published this so...

    • @ziv2liv
      @ziv2liv Год назад +1

      @@Seimstudios Well, that is really depends on your work flow. If I shoot a bunch of photos in the same environment (Location, lighting etc), I edit one of them to my liking and create my own preset based on that photo. Also, one can argue that if you use a particular software for 15 years, you're pretty much "married" to it and learning or getting use to a different layout takes motivation. I tried to get into ON1 editor and I kept getting frustrated how counter intuitive that software is even though it has some good features. As I said, Luminar Neo is great for hobbyists but if I was a professional photographer, I would probably stick to Lightroom as well.

    nice review. I have luminar 3, 4, ai, neo and plugins. same for ON1 (a review on it is welcome :-) ). Skylum changes the workflow, menus,... at each version (and loose compatibility with presets you bought expensive on marketplace and need to wait for updates and re-install) and when they add something nice like preset preview in L3, they remove it in L4. when they add local panel in LAI, they remove from neo and we have now a cascade of 10 "develop" with same name in main edit history but they restored the preset preview. their develop panel doesn't follow the standard sliders of LRC, C1, ON1 and we have curves,... in develop panel, not nice. you need to open lot of sub panels for basic things like white and black (one switch for two sliders !). Honestly it is a nightmare.
    HOWEVER I love Skylum products and filters (orton,...), accent ai, ski enhancer, sky replacement,... but after frontend LRC raw develop, to make artistic effects. Even if I am fan of LRC presets, they are based on a limited number of filters (clarity, texture, sharpness and exposure at final) and it limits the creativity. for instance orton, blur, golden hour,... are always more beautiful with ON1 and Luminar. Look on marketplace and look the presets examples and they are just amazing for night street photo, portrait, landscape, architecture, macro,... Just sharing my feeling !

  • @HR-wd6cw

    Neo is good if you want "one click" quick editing that's non-destructive, with a bit of flexibility (it does support masking, but not to the level of Lightroom or even CAptureOne). So I think it has its place and the price is reasonable and a good option for beginners or people who just want to edit quickly, and don't care about the bells and whistles of control, like advanced masking or color adjustment. The sky replacement is quite good though, and for a while, rivaled what Adobe had (which was more or less a joke) and so I get Neo (And AI) credit for that, as that was one of it's major strengths -- something that Lightroom and C1 can't even do (although you can do sky replacements in PS with similar results).

    • @Seimstudios
      @Seimstudios  Год назад +1

    • @HR-wd6cw
      @HR-wd6cw Год назад

      @@Seimstudios Yes but I think it's interface is what I was getting at, which isn't necessarily a bad thing. But I think it still does sort of miss some of the more advanced features of LR and C1. Speaking of C1, the one thing I do like is the highlight slider (when pushed down to the lowest level) doesn't seem to produce as much "gray" tones as LR does if you are trying to recover, say, an overcast sky with some cloud detail. Once you get beyond about -80 you run the risk of ending up with gray highlights in LR. In C1 I felt it handled this a bit better (same photo), BUT one thing I did notice in another photo is that when there is color and gradation, I felt LR did a better job there at preserving the gradation or highlight area where it wasn't even, and C1 sort of blends it all together to look more flat, so it's a trade-off I guess. Of course if one has LR and C1 then they can have the best of both worlds I guess, although it is an extra step in the workflow (but I am considering this myself, starting in C1 to get toning and color the way I want for landscape photos, and then sending them to LR Classic to finish since the masking tools are a bit more powerful, among other things). At the end of the day, each processing suite has its pros and cons, and like cameras, find one that works for you, as the actual program used (in the view of the end user, ie. your audience) is less important and not really relevant to them, just like how it doesn't matter what brand of camera you used to capture the photo. The end user / viewer wll not know or probably even care.
      I think I also mentioned on another one of your videos (while not really relevant about the video but rather I think the discussion of subscriptions also came up) but I feel that Adobe could offer a perpetual license, like the other two... say $599 or $699 gets you LR, LR Classic and Photoshop, but it would lock you into the major version that was available at the time (so for now, it's LR Classic v12). If you wanted to upgrade, then you'd pay an upgrade fee and get the then-current version of PS, LR and LR Classic). So while I don't like what C1 is doing, in some respects, ADobe could learn a few things too and offer a perpetual license, perhaps making it a bit more expensive than a subscription for say 3 years but it would give people who perhaps don't upgrade that often, say maybe every 5 years, a way to save a bit of money, OR for those who don't like subscriptions. I think they could have had both models side-by-side and perhaps retained some users when they went with a subscription offering. Because for 3 years, the Photography plan is $360 plus tax. So they could have made the "perpetual" license $499 or $599. In the end, those on the perpetual license would just pay more to get the same level of tools over a period of time.

      @@Seimstudios I'm sorry but how is it more expensive than Lightroom? A perpetual licence is the same cost as a one year subscription of lightroom. Plus you have the option of getting a perpetual licence in the first place.
      I just got Luminar, switching form lightroom - and so far feel less comfortable using Luminar than lightroom (but very early days so might just be the familiarity with lightroom v.s. unfamiliarity with Luminar). But even if its worse than lightroom technically, the mere fact that they offer a one time purchase option puts them heads and tails above adobe.

      @@frisovanwassenaer785 I haven't used C1 (because of the price) so can't comment.
      Compared to Lightroom, Luminar has its positives and negatives. A big positive is that its very easy to use and beginner friendly: its very capable but everything is accessible through intuitive sliders. I also like how you can click a button to remove dust spots rather than do each one manually.
      The biggest negative for me is the "auto-edit" equivalent. The "ai enhance" is pretty aggressive and the changes it makes doesn't show up in your settings sliders. I am lazy and with lightroom, I liked to use auto edit and then go in to make my own adjustments. With Luminar, because the enhance function makes extensive changes, which don't show up on your settings slides, it is more difficult to combine your own tweeks with the auto-edit.
      But if you want to just go in and do your own editing, its perfectly fine.
      The pre-sets are also actually quite good and are incredibly easy to apply if that's your thing. Same goes for the "ai-enhance" - if you just want to make a photo look good without having to put any effort in, the aggressiveness of the auto-edit is a big plus.
      Some of the tools are pretty useful but don't seem ready for "prime time" - e.g. the erase tool can be great if used sparingly (like say taking out a branch that's sticking into your composition) - but it creates some awkward results if you try and take out too much - like floating trees and textures merging awkwardly in and out of objects.
      End of the day though, it really is good enough and improving on a regular basis. I still prefer lightroom but I would rather have luminar on a perpetual licence than pay for lightroom annually.

    Thanks for confirming many of the quirky aspects of Luminar Neo. Although there’s value in simplicity, sometimes more technically advanced workflows are required to provide unfettered functionality.

    Let's be honest. It seems that Luminar Neo's target audience is predominantly directed at people that want to do quick editing and don't want to have to do the minute editing that you can do in Lightroom and C1. Which depending who you are, isn't necessarily a bad thing. Luminar Neo has it's place and uses. The BIG advantage to Luminar Neo is not only can you buy a perpetual license for it, that you obviously can't do with Lightroom (thanks a lot Adobe), but if you've already owned a previous version of Luminar (3, 4, Flex or AI), you can upgrade your perpetual license for free.

    I was hoping for a review that highlighted the pro and con of the different programs, unfortunately this is a beat down based on an incredible knowledge of Lightroom. The review seems more geared towards photo editing professionals, any of which would be only using Lightroom/Photoshop or Capture One.
    I am a beginner/hobbyist. I am only ever going to show my photos on Flickr so going through the very steep learning curve of LR is not worth it. I had LR/PS but found it very time intensive which led me to just shooting JPEG.
    I am looking at Neo as it has some very easy edits that create some good results, it was disappointing that none of the AI buttons were used and every action was a replica of what LR does. I would have preferred seeing you edit a couple of pics start to finish in each program, then comparing the result and who would benefit from each package.
    Regards pricing, Neo offers a 12 month subscription that is half the base price of LR. Just because Adobe doesn’t offer the same deal, it shouldn’t have been skipped out.
    Thanks for the video and sharing your knowledge.

      Luminar being prices about the same as Photoshop and Lightroom must be compared to it. Yes this is a review for pros. But Lightroom is not really harder to learn. IN fact it might be easier because Luminar is doing many things that slow you down. It got beat down because it needs improvement. I really wanted to like it, it's just not as good.
      In the end try both and see what sticks.

    Good review. While there’s been a lot of updates since this video (would like to see an updated review) it still has a lot of the bugs / quirks mentioned. It’s software I want to love, but find frustrating a lot of the time. It’s nice to see an unbiased comparison. I only found this video as it started playing after Peter Mckinnon’s review. If you watch his video (which is a paid sponsorship) he makes it sound like the best software ever made. Which we all know it isn’t.

    I own all of these as well as ON1. Out of all, Luminar is constantly innovating with tools that rival the others and in some cases are more useful and more accessible than photoshop. I don’t believe you are struggling with managing a different workflow. Maybe this is an outdated video or on an old version. Clearly capture one or photoshop is best for you. Why would you use an app that’s very different and complain it’s not for you. Suggest ON1 2024 may be more to your taste. Neo is not supposed to be a standard app mirroring photoshop. You keep mentioning it’s not a professional tool. Then don’t use it. I use apps for thier strengths including Neo as a plugin for things it does that the others don’t.

    • @Seimstudios
      @Seimstudios  7 месяцев назад

      This is not outdated. Neo does not complete with Photoshop it completes with LR and Capture One. It is accessible which I like, but as we showed in the video the processing quality you get is simply not close and for pros this is a big deal. This is a compare review so clearly we have to compare it with the rest and it falls a bit short. But use what you like I say.

    I couldn't believe it's more expensive than Lightroom and Photoshop combined. Luminar is a bad joke compared to Adobe products. Perhaps if they wouldn't have come up with a "new" product each year and instead focused on improving the experience and features of Luminar for those who actually bought it they would then be at least somewhere instead of nowhere. My friend has 3 pirated versions on his PC (luminar 3, luminar AI and luminar Neo) and never uses any of them. He says if they offered them for free he would choose C1 or PS+LT/ACR because they are better and faster.

      @Seimstudios  5 месяцев назад

      Having been doing this since the dawn of digital I have used many of these tools on and off since they were launched. Luminar I believe among them. We're testing on results and output and the process quality is the main failing here. But yes lacking basic features like undo are a big deal. It has nothing to do with not knowing the software.
      Luminar is behind LR and even C1 for about the same money. That's the reality. But it doe have some nice features. If you like it, use it.

  • @don7117
    @don7117 5 месяцев назад

    Half way through the video and you are talking more about prices and exporting presets than actually using the software. You are 100% inaccurate on undo. The history of changes is available in Neo, contrary to what you have said. There is a slider for presets, again contrary to you have said. Your comments on layers are totally wrong. Even you are clueless about how the subscription works. You really need to spend a lot more time with Neo before doing any kind of review. This does not feel like a genuine review. At best , it is a terribly uninformed 'review'.

    • @Seimstudios
      @Seimstudios  5 месяцев назад

      At the time of this review everything I said was correct. And yes, prices and pro level functionality like preset managements matter. That's why it's a comparison to LR based on how it performs in these area of professional standards. But in the end the image processing is not even close and that's the biggest problem. in the end use what you like.

Luminar in the long run is cheaper in the long run, all Adobe will do is bump the price up. Why do you want to make presets, must be bonkers. Anyone now with a 28mp camera and a semi pro lens will be able to make superb images but just slightly enhanced if one so wished to.
