This took me back 60 years ago when I watched my maternal grandmother make her own soap. It always smelled so fresh and clean. She was the hardest working woman I’ve ever known. I miss her so bad. Miss Lori, you remind me of her. That’s absolutely the best compliment I could ever give you. God bless you and Mr. Brown.

I would love to know what ingredients your grandmother used. Mine great grandmother used straight up lye soap for everything- hair, body, laundry, household cleaning. I never met her, but she was a hard worker.
@@Sewmena918 she also used lye. She would set rain barrels out and dip the rain water out into a big pot. She’d boil her water and add lye and some kind of fat. I’m not sure what it was. It didn’t have a perfume smell it just smelled clean and fresh, like a morning breeze. She wasn’t a fancy woman but a very practical woman, and a Godly woman.

We put our orange/lemon peels and a couple of cinnamon sticks in our gallon vinegar jar for our rinse cycle. Smells amazing.

My grandmother would cherish you. She made lye soap and it ate up your clean, they were clean the thin, that was her homemade detergent. She did the best she could do with 12 growing kids. My Mom was the oldest and I am the oldest grandchild, I am 70 , my Mom passed when she was 89 and I miss my grandmother she had a homemade remedy for everything. I remember boiling water for washing in a black wash pot. She had no running water in the wash house. Yes she had a house to wash in with all those kids she needed that. Remember hanging close on the line and using a stick to hold them up when it got to heavy. Loved those days. Miss my grandmother and mother,they had so many remedies and recipes for that I thank you, because you bring back memories of them both so often. God truly has blessed you and Mr. Brown to bring joy to so many people who lived it, but can’t recall it. For that I say “God Bless You and Mr. Brown “, continue your ministry to everyone 🙏🏽
I lived in Naples for years then moved up the coast to Punta Gorda right above Ft. Myers. I always used to keep a cooler full of water and tea after storms and linemen had to come in. Had a sign to let them know it was for them a small thank you for their time and skill. Any my husband met he would tell you come by our house for home cooked food. never knew how many I'd have to feed but thanks to my canning and prepping I always had enough. Met a lot of really nice people that way. Even some from my home state of South Carolina. Small world

My paternal grandmother made her own soft laundry soap by saving scraps of Zest bar soap and putting them in a large plastic container made from an empty bleach jug and added hot tap water to it and mixed it together ❤ All her laundry smelled so good!
I just picked up my ingredients to make a new batch. To make quick work of it I picked up a old food processor for $5 at the thrift store to grate the soap. A batch lasts me over a year. I use mine dry. But I have soft water.-Sue from MI

I have been making my own laundry soap for years. One batch lasts about 2 years, costs me under 10$ for 2 years ... can't beat that. I envy you the cabin on 20 acres homesteading life but I do a lot of home canning other preserving etc. in my city home. You've inspired me.

In either Dollar Tree or Dollar General, Zote soap was quite a bit cheaper than Walmart. It was featured on the program " The List" on ABC.

I believe Zote soap is made in Mexico and is pronounced Zoe-Tay (long a sound, like in day)...I've used this soap in various ways...it's a great product. I use liquid laundry detergent, but add this in as well. A little goes a long way and adds a fresh smell to our clothes and sheets...love and blessings...Cindy

I'm a proud mother-in-law to a young man who travels to restore power to those who have lost it due to storms like Ian in Florida.
His wife is proud of him too and misses him when he is gone.
Please do some research!!! There is a difference between SOAP and DETERGENT. The homemade laundry SOAP builds up on clothes and makes them stiff. Detergent has an additive in it that pulls dirt OUT. Some claim that the SOAP clogged their wash machines.

It’s obsolete. Soap hasn’t been used to wash laundry for over 70 years. Only clueless DIY enthusiasts use it.
I dream of a simpler life and my husband said it sounds wonderful, but when I try to make things simpler, he really pushes back. I could live like this and be happier. They say less is more and I agree. Life has become so distracted with all the "conveniences" and I could honestly do without a lot of them.
Hi Miss Lori. I am in Polk County Fl in between Tampa and Orlando. We got hit really hard here. I really appreciate the work that your son is doing here. My power just came on this morning. I have some damage, but my home is livable. Many of my neighbors lost their roofs. Many in my area are still without power. I am hoping against hope that schools open Monday so I can get back to work I am a substitute teacher, so anytime schools are closed I can't work. Really hoping they are open on Monday. Had to throw out most of my refrigerated food. My big freezer was ok. Thank goodness I have been pressure canning most of my meat. Still had to throw away a lot, but not as much as some people had to. I can tell you that I don't think I have ever been so terrified as I was during the storm. It is not something I wish to go through again. But thankfully, I am mostly ok.

My grandmother would sit up outside.I was told that you put in enough soap to turn the water a smokie/blue color. She was born in 1886.she had to make her own.
I've been making my laundry detergent for years and got lazy, started getting the store bought and seen this video the other day. So, thanks to you I made a 5 gallon bucket and for the life of me can't recall why I thought the store bought was more convenient. This will last me and my husband a long long time, it smells great and much cheaper than the store brands and works just as good without the chemicals. Thanks for reminding me how easy and thrifty it is to make your own.
Is there a store that I can get Fells-Naptha? I've never heard of it and don't know what it is.

Do you know if this can be used with front loading, high efficiency (HE) washers?
I agree regarding people using too much in each load. I think that’s why people don’t like handmade detergent. I really enjoy making my own and I love how it takes care of our fabrics. The savings is almost unbelievable! 😊😊😊
I use this soap for my laundry, carpet cleaning and it makes my pots pans and silverware sparkle! Saves me so much money.

Mrs. Lori and Mr. Brown, Thank you for the usable, practical information taught on your channel. I remember seeing some of the old ways as a child with relatives and friends in “the country” where there was no running water- just a hand pump in the house, a wash tub for the kids feet before bed, a “white owl” at night to keep from having to go to the out house, a wood stove in the kitchen, a churn on milking days when butter was needed, and a broom handle by the garden to lift up the pea vines to check for rattlers before we kids picked the peas. Lol. These reminders you present fill in the blanks from my childhood memories that may well come in handy more than we think. Your calm genuine demeanor makes the learning easy paced and effective for learning cooking at my level of needing some basics. You both, in my book, represent what to be an American is all about. It is a spirit, an authenticity, honest and self reliant goodness that is America. To me, America does not exist in governments fraught with corruption, hidden agendas and encroachments on the constitution and founding documents fundamental to freedom. America exists in the hearts of we the people, in simple, caring and genuine intentions of good will and freedom of we the people.

Mrs Lori, I loved this video. I remember as a very little girl wondering why my Aunts and Grandma were cooking clothes in the back yard? I so appreciate your approach to life, And consider you a very wise and wonderful woman. I think you and Mr Brown have the most beautiful place around. The last couple of years have been rough on all of us. We need to get quiet and reorder our priorities, start being “neighborly” again and be kinder to one another. Love your calming voice and your depth of knowledge. I am a 69 year old Retired RN, and the older I get the more simple I want to be. Growing up, the lunchroom ladies at school were sweet, loving and made sure no child ever left hungry. These ladies were mothers and Grandmothers of our school friends and neighbors. The best food in the world. So as you can see Mrs Lori there is great value in what you do and say. You are a natural teacher. Plus you have a little spunk too. I watched your video on washing laundry off grid. I am now doing that. I bought the same washing sink. Love the results. My washer is newer but does a terrible job of cleaning. Thank you for sharing. I have followed you for a while now and get a lot of great ideas from you and Mr Brown. I like the smell of the zote soap. As a side note oxi clean works for cleaning the toilet also. Especially if you have stains.

I've been making my own laundry detergent for 6 months now and I love it. I really love the smell and I like the fact that it doesn't have all the extra chemicals and it's much less expensive.
Your clothes will last twice as long
Lynda, do you make the dry or the liquid version? Do you add an essential oil? If so, which brand and scent and how much?
Mrs. Lori used a cup before it thickened . How much do you use after it thickened?
@@UniquelyGeeky I don't use the essential oils. The Felz Naptha has enough scent on its own that I don't feel like it needs any essential oil. I make the liquid version using Felz Naptha, laundry booster and borax only.
@@barbarahunter2323 you use the same amount as you would when you use your regular detergent. I use 3/4 cup for a full load. Just make sure you shake it up or stir it up well before use.
You're right about the effects of citrus scents! I use a natural orange scented air freshener and it truly lifts my spirits and switches my brain to smiles. Lavender is my next favorite. I use that for organic soap because the commercial brands and body fragrances cause allergic reactions.

That little smile on Pa's face made my day. I wrote this recipoe down as soon as video was over, I will be making this tomorrow, Being retired on a fixed income you take all the short cuts you find. I have been putting the vinegar in my wash now and let me tell you it works! my towels are softer and the smell last so much longer now I can pick up a clean towel a week later and still has the aroma of just being taken out the washer, I do have a washer but not a dryer. I love hanging my clothes out they always seem to smell so much better plus running a dryer can get expensive I don't miss having one at all. I love your channel been watching for years, You both seem like family now. I believe that Lehman's catalog has a small portable pump-type (plunger-type) clothes washer that might be good to have if the power is out or if you are off-grid. They have several types of indoor clothes drying racks, too.... I always look forward to your videos! You are the "neighbors" that I wish I had, and we share the same values and our Christian faith!

When we had to buy a new washer machine 7 yrs ago , I refused to buy those new machines with no agitators ,
And hardly no water ,
Nope we went to a 2nd hand appliance store and got an agitator washer $150 ,
Not those crazy no agaitator machines that were like $700 .
My machine still works and nobody see's it anyways .
I refuse to buy these new silly machines 🙄...

About 20 years ago, I did not have a wash machine and in summer, I would hang out the clothes and put washing powder in a miracle grow bottle and attach to a hose and hose them clean, then rinse with the hose. It was all I could do at the time. I wasn't working at the time and money was scarce. Winter had to wash by hand in the sink & hang around the house.

I hope you get tour sense of smell back. What I thought was maybe there was a soap you used to love the smell of and can remember it. If you used that you would know what your washing smelt like.
I got my smell back. Researched how. All it takes is four essential oils, any brand...eucalyptus, lemon, rose, and cloves. Smell them for 10-15 seconds total twice a day. (Not 10-15 seconds each). It really works!! I couldn't smell and had basically given up!!! You have to do this for a few months, but it's worth it. I bought my friend who couldn't smell anything the same stuff, cured her too.

Normally, I don't go berserk with commenting on videos but I thought sharing my experience might be a good idea. Walmart doesn't carry Fels-Napha in their stores here and the price for ordering 1 bar was $16.97 plus shipping today. I drove to the Ace Hardware store that was supposed to have it in stock and they've been out since April. I finally broke down and ordered from Amazon: 4 bars for $27.63. The only reason I bought these is, even with the outrageous prices, spread out over 4 years, I will still be saving so much money that it's worth it. I hope your other subscribers who are wanting to try this are having better luck than I did! Thank you so much for everything you share, Miss Lori -- and we LOVE the Lunch Lady Peanut Butter Cookies around here!! They remind me of my own school days and I'm 70 years old! lol

Love to hear the words "cotton baby diapers!" I used to rinse the diapers out as best I could them put them in a bucket that had water and borax in it. The diapers soaked until I had a full load. I dumped the bucket in the washer and sent them through the rinse cycle before washing. The diapers always came out fresh and clean, stain free and bright white. Oh, I used about 1/3 cup borax to a 5 gallon bucket.

Oh Mrs. Lori... I made this wonderful smelling laundry detergent. It cleaned my laundry like nothing else has. Sadly, the smell sent my cat into Anaphylactic and he almost died. So, I disposed of the detergent.
My great aunt Aggie was still making her own soap up to the mid 70's. Using ashes and lye in her huge kettle outside. She was such a hard worker.
You remind me so much of my Aunt Anna K. My grandpa was from a very small town in Arkansas, called Hartford. Right between Sugarloaf Mountain and Poteau Mountain. You feel like family! Now I read a very interesting article about why homemade laundry soap is very different and used in a very different manner to laundry detergents. The difference lies in HOW you wash your clothes. Modern washing machines do not use friction, which soap needs to clean clothes. It uses agitation, which is why detergents work so well. They take the dirt out of the surface with the agitation process. Detergents clean very well as these are petroleum based and they work better in modern washing machines. Now homemade laundry soaps need friction like your washboard you used in your last laundry video! This why back in the day clothes washed this way got SO CLEAN, they were scrubbed. Soap is made with lard or other natural products but for them to work and clean well must have friction. Hope this is of help or use to someone! Just something I learned and wanted to share. 🙂 *Oh I re-read my post, and wanted to say I have used homemade laundry soap in my modern washing machine with wonderful results. I do notice after a time however, my towels do not dry as well and things looked dingy. I switch back to detergent and after a few washes, my clothes are back to the way I want them. So I switch between homemade laundry soap and commercial laundry detergents. It is what I find works best for my situation.
Rachel I noticed Miss Lori used vinegar also. Perhaps that addition would help your clothes stay " bright".

Oh bless you Katie! I was a school bus driver in Wa state for 8 years and almost 3 years here in Montana. Wa was best for pay, but here in Western Montana its lousy. The busses are family-owned and they are not employee-friendly! They keep our step-raises and I got 1 30-cent-per-day raise! When another driver discussed it, he said, "Donna, be happy. I've been here for 15 years and this is our first raise!" I've retired since then.
I did this for years but started back with store bought when I started keeping my grandson full-time. It's time now to save some money anywhere you can, and this is a perfect penny pinching idea because it works so well! (We always toss our measuring cup in with the wash to keep it clean and prevent it from gumming up. It comes out like brand new with every wash!)
I do the same with my plastic cup. It can get caught up in sheets and I have a fun time searching for it! 🤣

I've been thinking about doing this for quite a while. Paying for and discarding the large plastic containers hurts my heart and paying for the tide in the cardboard hurts my pocketbook. I'm in Ms. Lori. Thanks for the tutorial.
Have you seen the laundry detergent that’s like a small sheet of paper. It desolves in the washing machine. I wonder if they clean good cause I too hate all the plastic
I use grated zote and water and I add dry baking soda 1/4 cup and white vinegar for softener . My clothes sheets down comforters come clean and soft.
I had no idea the Zote soap was so strong. You just filled a whole bucket ! 😮

All of the videos remind me of when i was a little boy and all good memory's i helped my momma so many times washing with a washboard, and then we got a gas washer and it was my job to run it on wash day we had no running water no inside toilet, and mom cooked on a wood stove and we canevery thing we grew, for winter we lived in northern Minnesota
We keep coming back because we LOVE both of you! I''m really interested in trying this laundry detergent , we go through so much here and the cost is just getting higher every few days it seems. You can teach an old woman new tricks! 😉
