Loch Etive Shore Fishing

  • In this fishing video I am shore fishing at Loch Etive in scotland with my brother and nephew.
    I have some good memories of fishing loch Etive over the last few years with my family but this year has been the best of what loch Etive has to offer by far.
    My brother, Nephew and myself set off for loch Etive in the small hours of the morning for the long five and a half hour drive up to bonny Scotland. We prefer to drive through the night and arrive for first light or there about ready to fish straight away.
    We arrived at the loch on Saturday morning we drove along to the slipway near the quarry but decided it was too windy to fish there so we headed back along to the priory and decided that’s where we would fish for the weekend.
    We got the tent then the rods set up first with two of us using pulley rigs and one with a one hook paternoster rig.
    It was low tide and we would be fishing the flood. There seems to be a quite deep drop off within casting distance here at low water so you don’t need a mega cast to be fishing in deep water but you need a fair cast if you are fishing here at high water to get into the deep water.
    The baits we brought with us were mostly frozen baits; Mackerel, Bluey, Sand eel and Squid we couldn’t get our hands on any rag worm before we left but I had some live peeler crab left over in the fridge to take as well. On this occasion the frozen baits caught all the fish with nothing taking the peeler crab apart from the crabs.
    The weather wasn’t too bad it was a little bit windy and it was coming straight towards us but that was a good thing because it was keeping the midges at bay but the weather kept changing throughout the day.
    About half way into the flood I got my first bite a good rattle on the rod tip. I wound into it and struck the rod and after a little battle I landed my first ever spurdog. It has taken me about 4 years to catch one but you know what they say once you get one that’s it they are like busses ha-ha more on that later.
    The spurdog was caught on a pulley rig with a size 1/0 hook using a sand eel squid wrap for bait I was over the moon with it and after a quick pic it was released to fight another day.
    As the name suggests these fish have a couple of spurs on their dorsal fins that can do some damage to you so you should take care when handling them not to get spiked.
    In the distance we could here and see a storm sweeping in and could hear the thunder and see the lightning so we thought it would be best to bring the rods in and leave the fishing for a bit until it passed. After about half an hour or so the storm passed and it was back to fishing
    We were having something to eat when my nephew’s rod went mental and it wasn’t long until he was fighting a decent fish.
    He was struggling a bit but we wanted him to land the fish himself and eventually the fish broke the surface and it was a new species for him.
    He was well impressed with it and even let me get a photograph of him holding it
    The ray was caught on a pulley rig with a size 1/0 hook and a single sand eel for bait.
    We fished on until it got dark with no more bites then hit the tent for some well earned sleep after a long drive and long days fishing ready for round two tomorrow.
    Day two we decided to stay at the priory, low tide was at 10am so we would be fishing the flood again so we got set up and got the fishing underway.
    My nephew wanted to do a bit spinning so my brother drove him along to the slipway so he could have an hour or two spinning and I stayed at the priory and kept on fishing.
    I set the rods up with the same rigs as yesterday one baited up with sand eel and squid wrap and the other with just a sand eel hoping for a repeat of yesterday’s action this time I set the ratchets on both the rods and sat waiting.
    It wasn’t long before the ratchet started to go I got to excited and I grabbed the rod and struck with the ratchet still on and the reel in free spool which resulted in a big nest but I wasn’t going to let that stop me I just reeled over it and thought ill sort it out later and I’m glad I did.
    This second fish seemed to put up a better fight and give a good account of its self and after a brief battle I got it to the shore my second ever spurdog I was over the moon I’m not sure what weight it was but I’m not that fussed I was just buzzing to have caught another one and to get it on film.
    After a bit filming and a quick pic it was released.
    The weather was doing much the same as the day before intermitting wind rain and sun but still it was keeping the midges at bay so I was happy to put up with it.
    The rest of the day was slow going with our hooks coming back in picked clean off the crabs.
    Later on into the ebb my brothers’ rod went then stopped then went again and after a few mins he had struck into a fish.
    After thinking he had hooked into more rocks and weed again it broke the surface and we seen it was a canny Thornback ray
    Thanks for reading.

      Thanks mark, luckily the storm didn’t pass directly over us if it did we wouldn’t be touching the rods. Good luck on your trip there it’s a great place to fish.

    You managed to get a decent sized Spur.... you reaction was just like mine...laughing and chuffed to bits... Weather wise... that’s Scottish weather... I’ve seen the four seasons of weather in one day whilst I’ve been fishing... up here in Scotland you can guarantee the weather will be changeable to say the least... mince to see young Tyler with his Thornback... keep the vids coming ..tight lines

    • @grant1133
      @grant1133 7 лет назад

      Just metal jigs or those Wedge spinners even. They aren't very hard to catch at all, all you have to do is find some rocks that go into deep water.

    • @fishingintheukgarywood
      @fishingintheukgarywood  7 лет назад

      Excellent. The main difference is spurdog's have a spike on their two dorsal fins and the smooth-hound doesn't.

      Completely different fish Ian, Spurdogs are only caught in Northern Scotland generally in deep water, you'll certainly never get them in Blackpool unless they're on holiday!

    Gary, I'm heading up to Etive on the 21st of this month, One thing I haven't considered is keeping the bait frozen. Is there a shop close to the priory that you know of? or a way of keeping frozen bait for 2.5 days? Cheers mate, much appreciated!

    • @fishingintheukgarywood
      @fishingintheukgarywood  5 лет назад +1

      I think there is a tackle shop in oban called the anglers corner but I'm not sure what the bait is like as we haven't had any from there. When we went for a couple of days we took a cooler box to keep the bait frozen for as long as we could. Some of my dad's mates salt some of their mackerel and bluey to keep it from going off and use that towards the back end of the trip after the frozen stuff. I can't wait to get back to etive next year. Let me know how you get on.

    • @Program2live
      @Program2live 5 лет назад +1

      @@fishingintheukgarywood Thanks for the info I will probs do the same just a cooler box, should be fairly freezing at this time of the year so that should help. I will defo give you an update. I just need to ring the hotel and see if they're happy for me to take in my fishing gear, fingers crossed!

      @Gary Wood Fishing Just an update, just got back from Etive. overall did 18 hours fishing with no result, not even a bite. I had 1/0 hooks on a pully, 2/0 hook on a paternoster. Bait was squid, mackerel, bluey, and sandeel. Cast between 50-150 yards (trying to fish the fish at any depth). FWI I fished the priory 16 hours and 2 hours at the wind-sock. Overall not great fishing wise, stunning place though! Maybe gan back up near summer. Cheers for your help!
