Matt shows Bill, the customer, all the features of his new red cedar framed chicken coop with reclaimed barn wood siding. This customized Carolina Coop in High Point, NC is 10'x18' overall with a 6'x10' henhouse.
The coop has fully functional cupola, ChickenGuard automatic chicken run door opener, and a heated poultry waterer system. Bill state the 3 key features every chicken coop must have.
This coop also has a 5-gang egg hutch, HDPE-lined deep litter bed, and three 10- foot rope wrapped roost bars. There is no cleaning needed for at least a year or longer, especially using our industrial hemp bedding. Yeah, companies like this are always so darn expensive that we average folks can’t afford them. We bought 10x10 chain link dog kennels and adapted them for our chickens. We also built a coop house for them a lot cheaper. I guess people who can afford a Cadillac version like what’s in this video, more power to them. For me, I’ll keep it simple.

Man , I can plainly see that this coop involved a ton of work and planning, probably way more than the customer even knows! The amount of foresight that goes into executing such a well proportioned and and beautiful looking coop like this is beyond most peoples comprehension. The attention to detail is next to none! I myself do high end construction for the wealthy folk.. and trust me, i know what quality is. There is so much that goes unnoticed in this build but i see it all. I don't even know where to begin! You guys are truly committed to your work and chickens in general, and your product is worth every penny by the looks of it and the way you run your business. Murica ! I have to tell you, that's the nicest chicken coop I have ever seen. Any chicken that lives in that coop is truly, one lucky bird. Mater of fact forget the chickens, I would move into it 🤪. I would like to see a follow up, after the birds have moved in. It looks like it's going to be a joy for both, the chickens and the people. Nice to see.

Thank you for the continual inspiration!!!Absolutely love the salvaged barnwood and red cedar. I appreciate you sharing your wisdom and your knowledge with us all and will most certainly incorporate all of your mindful ideas and methodologies when I build my own future chicken coop in Northern Quebec. I was considering possibly insulating the hen house with Havelock sheep’s wool and eventually using solar power for the water heater and electrical. I may need to research additional heat sources and heating lamps to withstand -40C in winter and would appreciate any further recommendations in dealing with our cold winters. I may also add special smaller sized Noseeum screen as well to all of the ventilated openings rather than mosquito screen on top of the hard wire. If you are able to grow Elderberry shrubs around the perimeter they will help your ladies immune system and prevent many diseases which seem to be running rampant. Having the run fully enclosed is also an excellent deterrent from possibly diseased wild fowl contaminating flock. For anyone on a budget like myself this is still perfectly doable by taking the time to plan ahead, gather as many salvaged materials as possible and use your imagination and resourcefulness just as our ancestors once did. Carpentry skills will always be invaluable. Nice to see other female carpenters as well of all ages. May God bless you and your beautiful family. You also may want that insect screening of a pretty fine mesh to protect from insect pests like black flies (nicknamed buffalo gnats). We lost a couple birds a few years back because the spring swarm was so bad. Had to staple a bunch of screening up over the vents and every little crevice to save the rest.
If I may respect ask, Where are you located/ in what part of the country are you? Asking because I’m new to this and getting some chicks shortly to raise. I’m in SC.
@@paulrucker1786 IL/IA border. There are multiple species that bite livestock and people, but the ones I know about are mainly northern half of the US. But there might be problem species down where you are, I'm not completely sure.

U r right about the wood going across in the run, they rather be up there than in the coop at night, i gotta take mine down
We spent over a decade perfecting our design elements. We're still improving of course. But yes, chickens will always look for the highest point to roost, so we tell people even if you want anything for them to jump on in the run, never make it higher than your roost bars. 😎
Do you build insulated coops? Also whats the weight limit for the roof and floor of the roost? Theres times where we get 2-3 feet of snow in the winter in ny and my being only 5 ft and cleaning out all the leftover bedding dust from the corners would need to get inside the roost area to clean it thoroughly

I would love one but my pocket book only allowed me to get a coup that only holds 10 I then bought a 10x20 dog run which I attached hardwire on walls, roof, and 3 feet buried all around the run I thought I had my girls secure, I forgot about the two legged kind of predators and after someone helped themselves to two of my hens last month so now I pad lock them.

Hi, only sideways rain would get in. We sell our chicken coop winter storm shields that can be screwed into the coop to cover the hardware cloth.
Amazing coop! How do you fasten the hardware cloth?
We use a pneumatic staple gun and use only stainless steel staples. We have perfected rolling out the hardware cloth and attaching it so it goes on just right.
Awesome if you have enough to buy a niced used vehicles for most of us this isn't feasible but is beautiful
This is basically the exact same design I have drawn up for my coop with some little differences.
1. I wanted to use cedar but from what I was reading was it's a no no.
2. The way you joined everything is way more fancy and way better than what I was thinking but so much more work. But, the look is soo much better.
3. I wanted gutters to collect rain. Other than that it's basically exactly the same.
Hi James, gutters were added after to match the copper gutters on the house. Cedar wood for structural building is not a no-no, only using cedar shavings are a big no-no for chickens. Thanks for your comments, and congrats on building your own chicken coop.

Thank you for the video. What size coop do you recommend for 12-15 egg laying hens? I posted an older video of yours in a FB group show casing the roosting bars and someone said this, have you had or heard of a problem with mites on wrapped bars?
I can only imagine the amount of mites that would make a home in that rope.
HI David, if you are going to give your flock time out of the coop to free range, then our American or Carolina Coop that is 6'x12' or longer is good for 12-15 hens. We also have 8 foot versions which give you more roost bar space for up to 24-26 birds.

Great coop...Although I have some concerns regarding ventilation and possible air drafts in cold winter months. I would build the windows a little higher or lower the perches. Even so, it is possible to close contralateral windows so this could not be such a huge problem.

I have a question though....how do you isolate da chicken coop from water. Side rain will still hit the wood and the water can easily find its way inside the chicken coop, stagnate and promote rotting, and if it gets to the laying station it would ruin the nest. How do you manage this?
Hi Vitor. Ventilation is key to any chicken henhouse, the chickens are fine with the cold temps, there are holes above the windows that allow for air flow but aren't near the birds' heads. The windows can be closed and won't allow so much air draft that it will be detrimental for the birds. We've been doing this a long time.
Our coops don't get water damage from rain. They should always be treated with paint or stain, or egg hutches have flashing and they don't open from the top, so everything stays dry in our coops. Thanks for your questions and for watching.

The chickens will use 2, maybe 3 nests, max. I’ve tried to make them use others, with fake eggs and it worked, but a few weeks later they go back to using the same nest
Absolutely, they have one or two favorite nest boxes and they all use it, all the time!

Those roost bars will harvest mites. Just use 3 inch posts and douse with DE once a week.

Absolutely gorgeous coop & run. But he said he’s going to free-range them. That outside fence with stone stanchions is beautiful (and expensive!) won’t keep out anything. What is he planning to use to enclose their “free range” habitat when he has the doors to the coop & run open?
Is that why he only has five chickens?
maybe he has a guardian dog? In the 10.5 years we had our guardian dog we free ranged and never lost a chicken.

Any insulation for cold Winters?
We find that insulation isn't necessary for chickens. They are insulated and huddle close in the winter.
VERY IMPORTANT FEEDBACK: The chicken guard door has 1 flaw: if it gets jammed on the way down and happens to unstick and continue going down, the locking mechanism will engage before it goes all the way down and will be left ajar, leaving your coop vulnerable to unwanted entry. A simple fix is to add a lip at the base big enough to cover that potential gap (I suggest testing the scenario I’ve described, and build the lip accordingly). Would be a shame to have such a meticulous build compromised for that one detail. I just purchased the chicken guard myself and will be doing that adjustment on my new coop build.

I wish there was a much more Affordable version of this Coop. Like in the 1000$ range.
It’s a nice coop but a raccoon can go through hardware cloth. They may not be able to get through the door but they probably won’t have any problems making a hole in that hardware cloth. I would probably add some stiffer wire to the outside but other than that I think it’s a really nice build.
You could rent rooms out on air b and b in that coop.

Thank you! Inside the henhouse we use food safe high-density polyethelene. We like to think of it as a cutting board for your coop. It doesn't have to be treated and makes clean out super easy. Although with our deep litter beds, you can go over a year without cleaning your henhouse. Thanks for watching Lisa!
What do you do for the footing to prevent predators from digging under?
looks like a concrete foundation that probably goes deep enough to prevent digging
We install a predator apron on all our turnkey coops. Plus there's a video on our channel for all people to DIY a predator apron.

Couldn't you use solar boilers or solarpanels for the water heating part ?
Hi. You would need to have battery storage set up to be able to run during the evening when the pump and heater would be most necessary. While solar is great for many things, it would have to have a big enough display and storage to be a reliable source, especially during the winter when the days are shorter (not best for solar production) and the temps are coldest.
Have you ever added Biochar to your deep litter
HI, we don't add biochar or anything else to our deep litter. It's important to let the beneficial microbes do their work in breaking down the hemp bedding and droppings. We are guessing you mentioned biochar for odor control. That isn't necessary with the hemp bedding (as long as you don't overload your henhouse) because it's so absorbent and it keeps the litter dry and controls odors. Thanks for watching.

I understand it depends on the city/county regulations. But as a rule of thumb. You built a lot of chicken coops, have you ever asked for permits before construction began?

As a rule of thumb, it's the buyer's responsibility to find out what the rules for chickens and coops in their area is. We haven't pulled permits for our custom coops because the customer will do so if necessary where they live. The rules are different for every city, town, county, and state, so if you want a specific answer, we suggest you call your the government agency that handles that in your town. Thanks for watching.

Customer might not know, it is responsibility of contractor to obtain necessary permits. If government will ask to demolish structure and pay fines, all responsibility lays on the contractor.

However, we are planning large custom coops months and sometimes more than a year in advance before we even go to the state, property, etc, to build. The customer has access to their individual municipalities' websites, phone numbers, or resources. Most of our smaller coops are delivered on a pallet. It's also the customer's responsibility to find out if they can accept a large truck bringing a coop on a pallet on their street. Because we do work all over the country, (our coops are in every state) plus we have coops in Puerto Rico, the Cayman Islands, Sweden, etc we ask the customer to do their own due diligence.

Is there a reason the house is built off the ground instead of just a walk in?
Yes, there are many reasons. Mostly, the raised henhouse gives the chickens more room underneath. It also put the drop down litter gate a a perfect height for a wheelbarrow.

The only change I would make is put hardwear loth under the roof. The metal roof lets rats in.
Wish you where in Australia, we can't get any decent coops. Only chinese stuff, yuk, they leak and don't last!
we haven't had a problem of rats getting in through the roof. Rodents usually come to coops because of the free food and harbor. We always advise to not give them a reason to be near your coop, so there are feeders that help with that. We are exploring bringing our coops to Australia and New Zealand, so stay tuned. Nice work except the trim board at bottom of evet batten, walls and doors. It catches and holds water, first place to rot. You'll not see that bottom trim board on anything still standing installed 100 years ago.

Hi Aaron. This coop is made from reclaimed barn wood that the team pulled off a local barn that was slated to be destroyed and burned. We would argue that this is a much better use of material that would have been 'wasted' otherwise. Thanks for watching.
I thought I was going overboard with my coops, with heat, window perches, etc... but like my wife reminds me of sometimes "it is just a chicken coop".. I think your customers have no idea of what "its just a chicken coop means". Man talk about over board...
