This video made me cry. A month ago I left an almost identical scratch pulling out of a space because the person next to me parked crooked. I left a note, telling her I'd pay for it etc. and it has been a nightmare. She called the cops and they banged on my door hours later at 11 at night and pretty much told me I broke the law by note filing a police report then and there (by the way I left a note so I broke no laws), finally after a month I just got handed an $840 bill. This happened in the parking lot at my Christian University and has made me lose so much faith in humanity. This also happened on the 2 year anniversary of my dad's death. I am working 2 jobs to pay for this and truly want to cry all the time because I cannot believe the lack of compassion people have. This video showed me that there are amazing, kind, and wonderful examples of plain old human goodness in the world. Thanks Stuart :)

It's funny how people just say he;s doing it to make money. He does kind things, and with our views, he has more to give. I'm not sure if you noticed but his car wasn't all that. Most youtubers would actually use that money to buy luxury cars and all this high tech stuff, but Stuart looks like he really doesn't use much for himself. In the end he's helping people, putting smiles on people, and when once smiles, someone else might start smiling and so on.

I admit, I can't say I would have done the same... but well done for being good, but even more well done for the girl. She was honest and took responsibility. I respect that very much. More people should be like her.
Sadly my minor car accident didn't go down as smoothly.
I saw my car get scratched in a car park, by a girl in an Opel Corsa. She tried to leave, but I stood in front of the car. I was very angry that she wanted to leave. She said that she tried to leave, cause this was her 5th accident this month and her parents were furious... She was rude too.
Needless to say, since I was furious too, I made her call her parents, since she had no insurance details with her... Spoke with them and dropped my car off at the dealer the following week for repairs. The fix totaled at 800 Euro and her insurance paid nicely.
Turns out they don't fix the scratch itself at the dealer, they sand and repaint the whole part...
I would have been nice, if there was a note, or the girl didn't try to run away... But since she did, she got what she had coming.
big parking lots have cameras everywhere. always leave a note, or there is a chance you will be found and then in much much more trouble as hit and run is a criminal charge. granted, somehting so small as in this vid they might not even notice till later, then not even know when it happened. but if its something noticeable, they will go to the security office at the mall and ask to see footage and get your licence plate. honesty is the safest route for you, and the right thing to do.

But most people are not out there to harm or kill others. Harm, distrust, is not the first thing that come to their minds when they encounter a stranger. Most people will scream " get out of there!" if they see a beam falling over your head. Most people will show some degree of concern at the sight of others misfortunes (so much care is shown for strangers affected by natural disasters, epidemics...).The fact that you've gone through school, through college, and work Mostly unblemished; the fact that Only about 1% of Americans are psychopaths... are testimonies to the good nature of most people.
Interacting individuals often have, to various degrees, conflict of interest, or compete with each other, and that can make behave meanly toward each other, but most people will not go so far as to inflict death or serious physical pain on each other in these situations. ( note that hostility and violence (to a smaller degree) have some role to play in survival and flourishing).
Confirmation bias is also part of the problem: We tend to notice mischief and evil more than we tend to notice kindness and altruism. The media is a great culprit in that as well.
You are most likely to be harmed by people that you know. And we don't know that many people.
People who think that most people are bad either hold them to too high standards (like unconditional love, honesty at all cost...) or base their conclusion on their personal experience, ignoring the global data (or both). I'd say you fall in the second bin.
Also, research show that humans have gotten more and more moral over the centuries (Think slavery, racism, Women/children's rights, Tolerance... Steven Pinker, and Michael Shermer make a good case for that in their latest books.)

How do you think human civilizations get to the point they are? by recognizing that we're are social animals, that our happiness depends on that of our neighbors, that showing concerns for them means showing concerns for ourselves? Or by walking around thinking every body is out to get me, so I better get them first?
Empathy and sense of fairness are innate in humans like in other social animals. The few who cant empathize are called psychopaths and sociopaths, which is why Bystander Effect does not apply in extreme cases, situations which involves OBVIOUS and imminent and high degree of threat to life and wellbeing, like a beam falling over a stranger's head. Plus, Bystander effect says the impetus to help decreases as bystanders increase due to ambiguity and diffusion of responsibility, but not because the individuals themselves lack intrinsic empathy. It is an instance of how empathy can be partially inhibited. It actually shows that in some situations, people are more likely to do the right thing when no one else is watching.
We empathize by default. But empathy can be inhibited to various degrees if we feel that the "victim" (or potential victim) in question is deserving of her plight (an enemy, for example). And that's not necessarily a bad thing. being hostile, being violent even, is sometimes the moral course of action.
And...a species will self-annihilate unless it is predominantly good at least towards its own members.
