@JTH this is how I've gone from plat 2 to d2. Just being in the right spot, and serving my teammate the ball on a silver platter. I can't dribble, can't flick, can't speed flip. The only mechanic I CAN do is a half flip. But by just being the Watson to my teammate' s Holmes, I win games that I have absolutely no business winning mechanically.
Yes, I thought i couldn't get off the plat/diamond rank because of my mechanics, but, watching some controller players playing for the 1st time in KBM, i realized that Game Sense is everything.. And, like you said, trying to incorporate these mechanics, made me slow down my game progress in general..
i love this becuase ive only been playing rocket league for less than a year and this is how i feel being pretty new in general. The whole "I know what i need to do but my hands can't do it" hits me deep man
Not having access to a controller when I started playing meant I've been playing with KBM for over 2000 hours now. I can absolutely vouch for both the upsides and downsides of KBM vs controller. As clearly shown by people like Henkovic and Evample, it's definitely possible to do really complex mechanics on keyboard, but the learning curve is definitely steeper than on controller (that said, I've spent almost no time actually practising advanced mechanics like flips resets, so take this with a grain of salt).
I tried going to controller from KBM for a week and couldn't get over the transition to using the left/right triggers for reverse/forward. May try it again some other time.
Oooooooooh man, I cannot express how validated I feel in my gameplay now after watching this. The struggles of teammates that just leave you bewildered at their choice of action. The pain of knowing you are mechanically so far behind most but can still keep up through game sense and knowing when and where you need to be. Thankyou you mad lad. Finally people will stop obsessing over flip resets and flashy mechanics as the path to getting good. Maybe...
Thank you for this awesome video and message. As a KBM player you'll always question yourself and whether you did make the right choice. This helped me a lot to just do, what feels right and not to have the pressure of thinking what I could've achieved as a Controller player. Nice vid!
The way you describe feeling helpless because you know what to do, but you can't get your hands to do the actions needed perfectly sums up my regular Rocket League experience. I've spent so much time watching pro players, freestylers, replays, tutorial videos in the 2 years I've been playing this game. Whenever a play opportunity presents itself, I usually immediately know what possible plays can be made, but when I go for it and I don't get a good touch just because I wasn't precise enough or I was a tad bit slower or faster on the ball and then I have to watch the ruined play unfold before me. Knowing there are all these amazing plays to go for, but not being able to perform them is what makes me feel helpless.
I played 2 years on KBM because when i started playing on steam, i didn't have a controller to connect on pc, and i didn't had any interest on one, i achieved diamond 2, i knew how to aerial, and other mecanics, in november 2022, i started playing on controller again (i played on console 2016-2019) and now i can't play on kbm anymore, controller is so good
I play kbm and everything you were getting mad about resonates with me so much. Honestly like I just got to champ 1 and I’ve been struggling on basic things sometimes. Idk what it is but for some reason my muscle memory just goes down the drain sometimes and I miss everything.
i know it ain’t a big transition but maybe a less stressful one , but maybe try an Xbox controller and see if you like a ps4 controller or Xbox controller better
I totally understand that feeling of helplessness with the controls. I can see in my mind what i want but the execution always eludes me. To be fair, im sub 100 hours in the game so im still learning quite a bit. This combined with the rough teammates im getting at the G3/P1 level make the game a real chore to grind. I just have to get better
Funny how the thing that tilted him the most and made him give up is what most of us midrange players suffer with on the daily. We know what we should do but our hands just aren’t doing it yet 😂
any new kind of imput requires muscle memory which depends on the person but can get solid progress within a month for at least the basics of moving. Outside games played that involve lots of keyboard input for movement is also helpful. One thing to consider is whether or not there's a mechanical kb available. It can make a big difference in turning. Also, forgot to note that half flips are the easiest thing in the world and there's no way to fail one once u know how to do it.
@Thanovic I'm a c1 kbm player and I have attempted using a ps4 controller many many times and I end up feeling the same way you do about playing kbm. I really liked your conclusions about playing kbm and I feel the exact same way you do when comparing control vs snappy movements. I, however, prefer the snappy movement of kbm. You will get the same angle every time you press keys in the same sequence and it lets you do repetitive actions reliably. Practicing those blackout situations is critical. I really appreciate that you tried this challenge even if you quit early. I feel slightly more represented and justified as a kbm player now, thanks.
This is exactly how I feel when using a controller xD I could never do that for more than a day, so props for putting yourself through that for that long!
Thanks for not despising KBM as i am a KBM Plat too, and i'm consistent enough to miss a whole backboard sized open net- I MEAN to air dribble off the wall, and i would think the same of ctrl. It would be hard to get used to, but i would feel both the upsides and the downsides too.
I love how u point out the toxicity in the lower ranks. I actually think that that's what ruins peoples way to rank up in several cases tbh! Love your content tho ❤
i started today my first day with mouse and kb, im really not good at all but i like to play the game. and im feeling way better actually then with con... i really hope i can so near the same like u in 2 weeks only. have a nice gaming life dude :) your vid makes me to train harder then just givinng up after some fails..
Big props to you man, surprised you lasted 20 hours. I'm a kbm player and I tried switching to controller. I didn't last an hour, I had the same problem as you. I knew what I wanted to do but I just didn't how to do it on controller. It was so frustrating.
Yo same im a kbm player thats tried to switch to controller but got hard stuck with mechanics and basic game sence. It made me so upset knowing that 90%+ of people play on controller.
lol i just wanted to mention that what you are describing is what athletes go through as they age, knowing exactly how to move/counter/perform a task but their body is failing them in a position where when they were younger/better shape they could do something with ease. It is incredibly frustrating. So for anyone reading this that doesnt understand why old heads react the way they do during something like open gym, Thanovic gives a fantastic perspective of our mental abilities not matching our physical abilities.
Ive been stuck in champ for the majority of my playing time and ive improved a lot both mechanically and positionally. But goddamn these fucking teammates just make the dumbest desiscions all the fucking time and then blame it on everyone but themselves.... (Im sorry ive been in this hell hole for way to long...)
@@Anthony-lv4ki trying being more on the defensive side and let them do whatever they do until you find an opportunity to score then just defend that's what I did to get from gold 3 to D1 where I'm Currently stuck because I gotta improve
I'm C1 in 2s and can confirm my teammates are terrible, but unfortunately so am I. Every time my teammate misses and open net I have to remind myself of the open net I missed last game. It's actually pretty interesting how at that rank people are starting to become competent at some pretty serious mechanics but still don't have any of the consistency.
As someone who has reached GC without being able to even air dribble, I can confirm that game sense and proper rotation will get you far. I stopped playing a while ago and just recently got back into it, so now I'm only C1-C2 because I'm just not consistent with my shots anymore, but really all it took was being solid and in the right position. The fanciest thing I can do is hit some basic double taps sometimes. Also, I'm glad you could see what it's really like playing with champs because now you understand my suffering and honestly the main reason I quit in the first place. Most teammates I get are more mechanically skilled that I am, which makes them feel like they're allowed to trash talk me for everything that goes wrong, even though they keep bumping me, cutting me off and stealing my boost. It's so incredibly frustrating. Missing open nets is one thing, I can forgive that since it happens to everyone. But I just wish they would use their brain at the very least.
From my experience having put around 1200 hours in RL and hitting a hard ceiling around C2 and C3 (I reached C1 about 500 hours in)... I must say I find it super hard to get advanced mechanics down with KBM. My friends who have roughly the same amount of hours as me (now) are stuck at the same rank, but they have a slightly easier times with a lot of advanced mechanics. To this day, I can't air roll for the life of me. I can barely sometimes pull a decent wall shot into a second hit for goal but that's it. I have never learned to wave dash, never learned to fast kick off and I've just now taken some time to learn fast aerials. I'm barely starting to get decent recovieries. But I still managed to hit C3 and stay at around C2 rank in both 2's and 3's with barely any advanced or even some basic mechanics that most know how to do in plat already. I truly feel it's not a hard rank to get, but I truly believe that now I've hit a ceiling that I'll only get through by working on those mechanics. But I absolutely do NOT want to switch to a controller and have to re-learn everything, that thought alone gives me nightmares. I'd rather stick to my guns and continue improving with KBM. If I had to find one big disadvantage to KBM it would be the lack of tutorials online, because so many pros/youtubers just use a controller, it's very hard to find something to help people with KBM improve.
@@lucasgustavob147 That, or they don't explain it enough... you have to dig deep to understand mechs on KBM, you have to research GOD DAMN REDDIT COMMENTS FOR THEM, and even then, those don't work, it's... yeah

I would say I’m about 250 hrs in playing KBM and I love it. I tried playing controller and hated it. I gave it a good 20 hrs of practice and still hated it, so yeah I can agree, it’s definitely your preference.
After only watching up to the ad 50 seconds in (Don't worry I'll watch the rest), I need to say that I genuinely have MORE fun while playing KB/M. I have ~3000-3500 hours on controller split between Xbox and PC, and am hard stuck at GC1 since I first got GC in season 13 (began 1 month after Xbox release, a week before Rumble debuted) I decided to try out kbm, and after ~15-20 hours of experience, I was able to solo-queue to Champ 2 in 3's. I'm good enough on kbm to still play with my GC friends and they take a while to notice a difference when I don't tell them if I switched. For me, I think it's about expectations. On controller, I feel the need to always at least be playing on a GC level minimum, and I should totally be getting good enough to hang in a low SSL lobby after all of my time playing. On KBM however, I really don't feel like I should be up above low diamond lobbies, but yet I can always stay competitive in a GC lobby if my controller were to disconnect. I feel so much more free and like I'm really enjoying the game again. That carefree vibe even transferred back to controller when I still had the kbm "I'm bad at the game" mindset and suddenly got a boost in my mechanical skills. Tl;dr: 3k+ hours controller. feels bad. 15-20 hours kbm. actually is fun
hey bro, im a gc3 player on controller wanting to learn kbm for the fun of it. you tryna run some games some time on kbm with me? you don't have to help me out mechanically or anything if you don't want, would just be fun to play kbm on a fresh account with someone else that has similar game sense to that of mine.
Probably the most difficult thing as a kbm player when trying out controller is the difference in the way jumping works. So after a while i legit gave up on controller because of the jumps
Bro I’m C3 and if I get scored on in the first minute my teammates like to gf and when I don’t do then start to play for the other team! This has happened about 6/20 ranked games in the past week
Agree im in C2 and people just fucking ff when we are 1 goal down even if there are 3-4 minutes left in the game. And if I don't FF they just sit in net or troll and own goal. Why do these waste of oxygen players even queue in the first place. Baffles me
Largest problem with KB/M is really the lack of full range motion and the lack of proper speed control. Both can be severely exploited by controller players. Source: 1,400+ hours as KB/M E: I've tried to relearn on controller and I am legit just in too deep on KB/M like diamond to bronze bad.

hey thanovic, as a KBM main, and trying to make the switch over to controller, i could say exactly the same thing and would go through your troubles when you made the switch over. your mind is so ingrained into muscle memory from KBM/Controller, that you expect the same outcome from what you want to do, but also forget that they are completely different inputs. In saying that, i never touched a controller again
Mad respect to you for going for it ! But I guess it's the same thing as your 100 hours videos, the concept is good for views but you always end up burnt out, I'm glad you made the decision to stop after 14 days, you don't have to go through this haha Also, just wanted to say that I started RL exactly a year ago, queuing with my wife every night after work for about an hour. I learnt mostly through your videos and we just made it to C1, so thanks !
Im old was around when snowboarding came out. I grew up skiing. Could shred the whole mountain, I felt the same way as you when I tried to learn to Ride.
I'm a C1 on controller. It broke one day and I switched to KBM. Was able to get up to D2 in 2 weeks and it wasn't serious playing or anything. Eventually got C1 again on KBM after another 3 weeks. I got stuck for a solid 2 months. Wasn't able to get passed C1 Div3. It was bad. The team mates were bad, useless bumping, lack of rotation, missing open nets. I was lacking the skills too. Went out to buy a controller and it took me a week of playing and getting used to it again to get C2. No more Kbm ever again. It killed my joy of the game too.
The stuff he said about teammates being toxic is soooo true, every other game a get a teammate who hits me with some sarcastic quick chat after I mess up, I feel like when most rocket league content creators give us low ranks (gold- champ specifically) tips on how to deal with toxic teammates, they don’t even understand how bad it is because they’ve been in the high ranks (gc-ssl) for so long wheee there is more mutual respect and less mistakes so less toxicity
Having bad teammates isnt even the worst part of diamond, like, im not good at the game, i dont expect my teammates or opponents to be either, but when you and a teammate make similar mistakes at different times in the match, you make the mistake and think to yourself "oof i couldve done something different there" but when they make the same mistake they blame you for it, that is whats truly tilting.
the whole idea/issue of knowing exactly what you want to do but just not being able to do and your brain just dying is an issue i have had for like my entire rocket league play time which is such a tilting thing so i related to this heavily lol
I actually made the switch from Kbm to controller 2 months ago. I had over 3000 hours on kbm and thought it would be hopeless. Thankfully I’m back to where I was before all thanks to this guy right here’s videos. :)
I'm struggling to make the transition myself. There are times when I'm honestly not sure if I'm being imprecise with the thumbstick or if my thumbstick is calibrated wrong, It's honestly baffling how hard controller is compared to KBM. I can't even half flip on controller lol. I completely understand thanovichs frustration because it is not fun to do this at all.
As a low diamond. Played with ~100 hours on kbm. The keys for turns are annoying. The lack of being able to do slight adjustments can be annoying. I don't have a controller 😂 so Im stuck. controller is definitely easier to get into. But one thing that has helped is changing my turns to the mouse movement. Rather than pressing A and D. I move my mouse left and right. It is much better imo
I usually like using controller for games that feel more intuitive for it. But Ive stopped and just always use KBM. Insane how stick drag and sticky buttons the controllers run into.
As a kbm player who's tried and failed 3 times switch to controller, I know that trying to translate muscle memory over to something else is a very unique kind of mental pain
Thanovic is the first RUclipsr to actually acknowledge the struggle of bad tm8s in champ and below instead of just saying “Don’t blame your teammates!”
Over the past 4/5 seasons I’ve managed to climb to high diamond tier never getting past it but I also don’t take time to practice moves etc. My little brother and I started playing around the same time and he actually practices crazy moves and stuff he’s way better at performing crazy stuff and getting the ball where it needs to be where I capitalise on mistakes etc. Oddly enough we’re both the same rank and can’t get higher at the moment but it’s interesting to see how we both differ in playing style but can compete together in similar ranks.
Played for 8 months and I’m c1 div 3 kbm. I’m jealous that thanovic was able to get it just by gamesense and he didn’t even have good control over his car. I could make an argument that I was a trader for about 3 months but I still did free play alot
As a keyboard and mouse player who's game play is pretty much described to the nines here, I feel you. I wish that Rocket League had different ranking for input modes so I can play on both. As it stands I can't switch without making a fresh account, which I refuse to do. I'd rather have input rankings and practice without needing to log into another client.
Nice vid thanovic its fun to see people try Kbm for the first time. I started playing rl a bit after f2p and I never had a controller so I started using kbm, after a month I tried using a controller but I just couldn’t under stand it XD so I have stayed with kbm ever since I’m d3 in 2s and have around about 750 xp lvl I feel I’m progressing kinda slow but I’m happy lol. I would like to know other kbm ranks just for fun.
I feel you man, I've played kbm since I've started my rocket league journey (late 2022), I got to diamond 3 and I couldn't go further so I bought my first controller ever, It is so hard to play on it since I am used to kbm, although I am confident that I will be able to learn how to use it
Champ 1 ruined RL for me. 3000 hours in and I'm stuck in that toxic barrel for good. I'm floored that you reached that level in just 14 days. I just can't do it any more.
I see a lot of “mechanics aren’t necessary to rank up up” but I’ve never seen anyone suggest learning mechanics to rank up. I understand it might be hard and that it’s really only for the select few people that like to grind mechanics but as someone who does this and actually enjoys the grind I can suggest it. But just like how you need basic arials and car control to keep up with game sense, you need basic rotation knowledge and defense techniques (backboard rotations and shadow defense)
I love learning to flip reset, and I’m c1. But I always make an argument that yeah ofc those mechanics aren’t needed, but it’s about how much time and car control it took for someone to pull off that flip reset. It trains your car control so much. So in return will help you rank up since you feel more control of your car
I literally did the same thing where i switched to controller for a week or so and man i was losing my marbles. Im a diamond 3 camp kmb player and i was able to keep up but there were so many missed saves and not much airwork i could do with my knowledge of controller. Maybe...
@@fatscorebags4294 yeah that's fair, it's the zone where people don't make so many mistakes so you need that toolbelt of skills
Knowing there are all these amazing plays to go for, but not being able to perform them is what makes me feel helpless.
as a mostly kbm player, i am amazed at how good you are at it with 20 odd hours. I have spent 500 hours and am barely in gold.
honestly after playing my first 2.5k hours on kbm I can say controller is god awful and I'm never switching. It's all about what you get used to.
I played 2 years on KBM because when i started playing on steam, i didn't have a controller to connect on pc, and i didn't had any interest on one, i achieved diamond 2, i knew how to aerial, and other mecanics, in november 2022, i started playing on controller again (i played on console 2016-2019) and now i can't play on kbm anymore, controller is so good
what champion looked like back then compared to now... the difference is SOMETIMES insane
From being in champ 2 and seeing some people sometimes flip reset then. and now I'm in c1 and anyone who can't consistantly reset has poor mechs.
Congrats on 300k, thanks for your content. You've really helped me become a better player at RL, and I enjoy watching you in general.
2 weeks of suffering is definitely worth a sub gg thanovic

Thanovic and Sunless uploading the same hour? What a blessing.

You have some super solid content. It's not just entertaining, it's often informative. 30 day challenge - teaching one of your parents to play.
any new kind of imput requires muscle memory which depends on the person but can get solid progress within a month for at least the basics of moving.
I always try to do it and give up after a few hours
Thanks for not despising KBM as i am a KBM Plat too, and i'm consistent enough to miss a whole backboard sized open net- I MEAN to air dribble off the wall, and i would think the same of ctrl. It would be hard to get used to, but i would feel both the upsides and the downsides too.
I love how u point out the toxicity in the lower ranks. I actually think that that's what ruins peoples way to rank up in several cases tbh!
Love your content tho ❤
@Caruso Merido man, I don't think so. If I don't wan't toxicity in the game, I shouldn't bring it in either.
i started today my first day with mouse and kb, im really not good at all but i like to play the game. and im feeling way better actually then with con...
i really hope i can so near the same like u in 2 weeks only. have a nice gaming life dude :) your vid makes me to train harder then just givinng up after some fails..
So what you're saying is... I can't get out of champ because of my teammates?
No
Ive been stuck in champ for the majority of my playing time and ive improved a lot both mechanically and positionally.

To add to your last paragraph, even if you find something, it doesn't work with you for lots of reasons.

I have ~3000-3500 hours on controller split between Xbox and PC, and am hard stuck at GC1 since I first got GC in season 13 (began 1 month after Xbox release, a week before Rumble debuted)
I decided to try out kbm, and after ~15-20 hours of experience, I was able to solo-queue to Champ 2 in 3's.
Tl;dr: 3k+ hours controller. feels bad.
15-20 hours kbm. actually is fun

hey thanovic, as a KBM main, and trying to make the switch over to controller, i could say exactly the same thing and would go through your troubles when you made the switch over. your mind is so ingrained into muscle memory from KBM/Controller, that you expect the same outcome from what you want to do, but also forget that they are completely different inputs. In saying that, i never touched a controller again

Also, just wanted to say that I started RL exactly a year ago, queuing with my wife every night after work for about an hour.
Every person on here complaining "it's all my team mate's fault" and then chastising people for blaming their team mate, is a hypocrite.
If you want to do speedflip here, flip using w and e key then sliding it down to s and d key, if u used default bindings.
Great vid, Congrats on 300k

as a kbm and mouse only player and still newish to rocket league this hit home for me

Congrats on 300k!!
Im gonna be honest.. The champs in Middle east are gods and super fast while the champs he showed were like low diamonds
I love how my diamond games were filled with mechanical gods and your diamond games were filled with potato gods

basically without mechanics
This goes for almost everything I learned btw, not just flip resets
Almost always if you can get a very good base level of mechanics you can learn almost any advanced mechanic quickly.
I literally did the same thing where i switched to controller for a week or so and man i was losing my marbles.
