the company I'm with is a all automatic fleet, i love it one less thing to worry about plus better fuel milage and less ware and tear on the transmission.

Do these break down often? Getting my license soon and thinking of buying one but all I hear is bad electrical problems and more breakdowns? Say if a truck has 300k miles?

I seen two videos where old truckers were bad mouthing automatics until they drove one and then they liked the autos. Even drivers doing heavy haul are going to the autos.

Manual transmissions are to truckers what muscle cars are to old men. They're nothing but outdated small penis compensators. "Slamming gears" doesn't make you look macho, these days it makes you look like a fucking tool.

Glad to have another driver in favor of auto transmissions. I have been driving autos for over a year now and I love them especially when I am driving in LA. One piece of advice for you to help with the shaking during acceleration. Most auto's are programmed to accelerate from a stop at only about 20 - 25% throttle. If you give it more then that it will cause the transmission to shift at a much higher RPM and cause hard shifting aka "shaking." It should be shifting around 1300 RPM's for the most part. Once you get into your last few gears is when you want to "get into" the throttle. Hope this helps you out and keep the video's coming.

I feel u about the automatic transmission... when I was driving local I love that transmission.. especially driving in NYC traffic..

I liked when I drove an automatic. a big con for me was the lag time between the time you press the gas and when the truck actually starts to accelerate.

I've been a a 15 and 16 freightliner cascadia, the shaking at a toll Booth shouldn't happen, neither truck I was in did that, the rest of the issues are pretty standard with them. thanks for the vids, very informative. I'll be leasing with prime next month on flatbed, little nervous because I have never done flatbed before but said they'll teach me, so I'm excited more than anything, your videos have helped a lot, maybe I'll see you around.

Good video, making some good points.
The only con I have with an automatic, is while bumping a dock. The vehicle speed needed to keep the torque converter spooled up and the transmission in gear tends to be too high. In my situation, I need to keep my foot on the brake as well as the throttle to keep from going into a neutral/idle situation. If it were a lockup type converter, keeping the transmission engaged while in reverse, it would make it easier to gently touch the dock, instead of, like one of my drivers did, and slam the trailer.
Just an observation from someone that started out with a set of sticks, no power steering and roll down AC.
    Carry on driver...

    • @rev9fan1
      @rev9fan1 6 лет назад

      John Anderson I don't think it's a torque converter, it's a true actuated clutch

it is good to know proper braking on a mountain cause the jake brake can fail. my jake brake failed on me but I was able to keep driving and I delivered my load in North Carolina, picked up a load and delivered in West Virginia. I deadheaded to Columbus Ohio to get it fixed. I didn't even come close to burning out my brakes. I did the slow down 10mph speed up 10mph braking for cool down and I could have kept driving like that. I figured I would get it fixed though. I didn't want to chance it. plus my cruise control went out with the jake brake. if I didn't get that training, I could have been in trouble and my load would have been late cause I would have probably been at a shop or worse. just thought I would share that cause that could happen to anyone and if your a trainer, that would be a great skill to teach a student. I wouldn't recommend anyone to drive without a jake brake like I did but it wasn't like I was on the big mountains out west and I stopped at almost every couple hills, on a exit or rest area just to make sure my brakes were ok. they never smelled or smoked but if they did, I would have stopped driving. I had lite loads as well.

My 1st experience with an automatic semi was an 03' Volvo. was not a fan. It would take 10 years to change my mind. A 2013 Prostar tipped the scale after I had given up on internationals. That was the standard and the Cascadia and big boy Volvo's have both impressed me. A Con would the learning curve of bumping the dock , "kissing the dock" and not smacking it.

I do not have any problems using eco coast. I think you are willing to learn. So contact an instructor how to use it right.
You said many things right, for example using cc driving downhill. But if you realize the jake doesn't keep the speed adjust the cc mph 5 miles lower. It will downshift by itself. There is always the possibility to help manual.
    Btw I like your explanation.

Hi. Like the vid. Forgive the spelling. I'm Canadian, It's metric. Love the knuckles on the brake valves. The Onguard system is VIR technology and it works similar to your TV remote. The problem is it can apply brakes in heavy traffic at high speed. You've been there. You're in the city, if you leave space infront for safety a four wheeler takes that space, well the limiter will kick in and slow you down. This can keep on happening. Just shut the dam thing off, or pull the fuse. I'm a truck tech and we all would love to have a "slap an engineer day" where we get to slap one and say, What were you thinking! International guys would have rosy cheeks, I'm tellin you. I agree. If the tranny isn't engaged when cresting a hill the driver is not in control of the vehicle. As the truck picks up speed (speed = energy witch is converted to heat energy in the brakes) the truck must be in the correct gear at all times. For the toll booths. The biggest fault in AMS (Automated Transmission v/s Automatic Transmissions). is the very low gear selection. Mack and Detroit have some promising advancements in this area. They have added extra super low gears. Good for vocational apps.

up here in Canada, if you get trained on automatic semi trucks our CDL will get restricted to driving automatics only, it would be harder to find a job by then, so we get trained Bobtailing first then having the 53' once we know how to shift the 18 speeds or 13 speeds, automatic looks nice to drive fleet companies like Bison Transport uses that truck DT12 transmission to their fleets for much safety as well as those Volvo Ishifts

I can see why people like auto. I drove a freightliner with the dt 12 auto for 27,000 miles. Only thing I didn't like was how it skipped gears up shifting. 3 to 6 to 8 to 10 to 11 etc. I must admit the Jake is serious on those things. But I still found myself taking it back for a straight 10. I just like more control of what's going on. Driving through the snow and ice in pa it was up shifting and down shifting when I didn't want it too and it bothered me. enough to turn them back in.

Everyone is afraid of changes nowadays but it's happening regardless, for those who or BIG 😠MAD😠OH!! Well.. the trucking manufacturer is going to mass produced the new technology coming out to where you won't have a choice, me myself I believe this gives the driver more flexibility in being a safer driver and also keeping you health and less stressful clutching all the time especially in city traffic and freeway's I'm all for it... What I'm not for is all these self driving trucks driving up and down Texas highways now with the driver along for the ride until he or she is need... 1-45 N&S bound I-10 east-&-west bound which is already operational currently.. that's scary letting the truck do the work might make the driver to relax and fall asleep when he is needed going thru construction zones or sudden accidents...

thanks for the vid's . really. I have a video request that I haven't seen youtubers do. and that's load responsibility . like spills , tip overs , theft . these types of thing. proper or improper loading that might be blamed on driver etc. I am not in the business yet but looking into it.....

Just so you know, they dont do anything to the engines with the automatics to allow them to rev higher rpms, all the DD engines will do it and it is recomended in the Detroit videos for maximun braking to rev up to 2100 and ok to rev as high as 2300 its in the Detroit videos. it works great I watched the videos when I first drove a DD13 in 2010 and never had to use my service brakes

How much of the Prime configuration on the truck are you going disable/remove when you leave your current company?

well prime takes all there stuff back. so like the on guard system they take, the tire pressure monitor, Qualcomm, Lane departure system. so I won't get any of that. it belongs to prime.

Have you had any instances in the rain where it catches the gear and out of coast and locks up the drives? I've had it happen in my Mack. Pretty scary
