I’m still watching but one thing I’ve been loving is going into the gallery and typing in “ Base Sim”. There are so many creators who put out blank canvas sims. It helps me to step outside of my comfort zone and also avoid same face syndrome. It’s especially helpful for me as a visually impaired person. It’s hard for me to see certain facial features and proportions.
I really like your tips. I tend to do perfect sims with perfect lives. Recently I made a musican, his main skill was guitar. He was close to lvl 10 in guitar so he could start bringing some money and then, game decided to randomly ask me if he is disliking guitar. At first i wanted to click no, but I thought that maybe I should go with the flow. He still could play just got negative modlets lol and you can made story to that, why he disliked thing he did his whole life. After licensing few songs, he abandoned guitar, gave it to his son and started exploring selvadorada. Sometimes it's good to not do things according to plan and catch what the game is trying to push on you xD
Yeah, I used to do that to, where I'd make perfectly dressed Sims with aspirations matching their career, etc. Never used any of the "bad" traits like lazy or evil. But recently I started exploring my options in traits and experimenting with funky clothing styles and such, just to make my game a bit spicier and it's been so much fun!
i LOVE seeing ur process!!! your way of creating a foundation to build off of is so natural and easy !! i also like switching around and playing different households (especially the ones with family and friends) in order to feel more connected to the save. it's all about being invested in the sims outside your main household!! otherwise you won't care if your sim has a social life !! thank you for this
Oh, this video is so good !!! And you know what, the 2 different outfits for everyday trick, i actually use all the time, even for like, my makeovers of NPCs and all, it makes it so much better to bump into people and they're not wearing the exact same thing every single time 😁

The sim I’m playing with now makes it feel like I’m playing the game for the first time again 😭 she’s the third generation of a family I was playing with. it’s really enjoyable, the only problem is I’ve turned aging off and I don’t think anything can convince me to turn it back on….. I’ll be so sad to see her as an elder lol
All your suggestions and opinions are totally spot on. I love this game and getting into your sims heads makes all the difference. Absolutely agree the first couple of days playing a new household are the hardest but once you start really working out who they are and making connections, it is so much fun. Thank you for sharing 💕
Yes. This is one of those games where your creativity and imagination is needed and it makes it more fun. I believe the people who complain are not that creative to come up with fun ideas.
i love dressing sims based on how i think they’ll dress. it definitely ups the personality of the sim. i reuse items as well. i try to make it as realistic as i can. :D i’ll definitely try out the gameplay tips
i thought you were going to mention that you should pick the aspiration you want long term because the bonus trait you get from that one can't be changed but you can switch between actual aspirations as many times as you like! what i like to do to make completely unique sims is randomise the mother and father, play with genetics and then age up the child to use as the base. i delete the parents >_>
also if i am doing family gameplay, i give the mum or dad something distinctive that they wear like a necklace or hat and then when they get old i go back into CAS and they pass it on to one of their kids to wear ;_;
I’ve been playing the sims for over 20 years (I’m 29) and the game has gotten SOO boring to me. Idk if it’s this sims 4 franchise or just the fact that I’m getting older. I’ll go through the CAS process, sometimes I even make it to build/buy but once it’s time for gameplay, I completely lose interest. I’ll definitely try these tips to see if I can get that spark back!
For me, there is just something about starting out with a rags to riches type of deal that makes me way more likely to enjoy a sim. I very rarely start a sim off with the 20k and don't wind up abandoning them 'cause I'm bored. This has been consistently true for me from sims 2 to now and I have no idea why I am so incapable of connecting to sims who don't start out on an empty lot, lol
I only enjoy Sims when I'm on the grind too, I totally get it. I think my biggest gripe in TS4 is how quick it is to get rich. I might look for a mod that makes money more reasonable. I don't want to play on short lifespan to make it take longer to build generational success because there's no time for relationships or hobbies. But I did a cottage living family and didn't have my Sim start a family until she reached adulthood. But the time their daughter was a young adult I had already moved into a huge house and they had a retail store, etc.
@@kwiggy5091 There is a mod that halves salaries! I don't tend to give my sims actual jobs if I can avoid it (idk why), which also helps. There is also at least one mod that makes it necessary to go to uni to progress in careers, and some that make uni more expensive which definitely all eat up money!
@@mackenziedesire7515 I love this community! I need one that significantly decreases value of crops too lol. I tend to also avoid traditional jobs for my main Sims but their spouse is normally who I get to do stuff I don't like and they usually have a 9-5 LOL. Or sometimes when my main played sim is older and I'm onto the next gen I'll plop them into a career just for something to do. By then they're maxed all their skills and aspiration stuff I've wanted to work on. But great to know all that. Honestly I normally just cheat money back down but with the inventory glitch that puts my whole farm in the household inventory I've gotten in the habit of super selling all to avoid the hassle of dragging each one. I'd rather leave everything on the vine until I need to harvest for the simple living trait or to make some money.
@@kwiggy5091 There's also the language barriers mod, which doesn't help with the excessive money problem, but it does make things more difficult! It also makes me realize my sims play style is clearly just masochism, lol
One small thing I love to do is have the same necklace/bracelet on almost every outfit so it's like their favorite piece of jewelry A braided bracelet for a more tomboy sim and a rose gold heart for a girly sim A masc sim who always wears a fitbit
I do the same thing! One of my sims is a spellcaster so I have him wear a certain necklace with every outfit and pretend its some magical heirloom passed onto him
The 2 qualities and 1 flaw thing is something that I've always done playing the sims, even with the sims 3 (where we could pick 5 traits, so I'd pick 3 qualities and 2 flaws). Besides being more realistic, it's a lot more fun than having the perfect immaculate sim
When I play generationally (which I basically always do lo), I have their "bad" trait be something they gain as a teen, At that point they have one good, one bad, and then when they age up to an adult, they get another good one.
Trust me she knows what she is talking about. I actually thought about the style thing awhile back when I first started my legacy challenge and it makes the sim feel so much more real. Another thing I did was gave them on trait and gave them more as I "discovered" more about them. It has made me actually want to play the legacy.
I definitely do the "signature style" already ! I notice that sometimes when I'm creating a party outfit with maybe using the same jeans as the everyday outfit, I think: Hey this could be a cute every day outfit! Then I add it. What I like for traits is even if you pick seemingly only "good" traits, you can spin a little twist on it using story telling. Along the lines of "two sides of the same coin". Examples of these traits that I use a lot for this are perfectionist & ambitious. You can say that they lead for your sim to be a workaholic and might overwork themselves.
This intersects with the new lifestyles so well too. I don't know if they've tweaked them or what but I notice way more effect from lifestyles lately (especially the workaholic one).
I really liked the idea of adding a relative in CAS and moving them out, including for already existing sims. Because I'm a veteran Sims 2 player I tend to forget the additional flexibility of TS4, like I don't actually have to modify sims' relationships through a third-party tool like SimPE, I can just jump into CAS at any time and create whatever relatives I feel like. In other words: I'm definitely going to be using this trick. I also liked the idea of repeating small personal items throughout a sim's clothing choices (like the friendship bracelet or the same pair of shoes). Being a person with a very out-there fashion sense I tend to struggle creating sims with a more restrained, simple approach to clothes that still feels personal. Creating a realistic goth or a raver clubkid is way easier than a lass-next-door kinda gal. So thank you for these tips!
Another advice I can do for fleshing out characters and premades personally is to look into what causes why they have certain traits and how the people in that certain household are affected. In my Komorebi mega save, I interpreted the idea that since Naoki is at best a workaholic, he is mostly absent from his kids when he is needed the most and spoils them to make up for things.. This could mean in contrast that this can be another cost to why Nanami is a kleptomaniac.. to cope with the lack of attention from her father and to gain it from him when even the lack of material gifts from him as "love" cannot be given to her.
To give each of my sims a style, I always filter the clothes to show only 1 expansion, 1 game, and 1 stuff pack, and I work from that only. It's a fun way to really see what each pack offers. If no items show up, I toggle on the base game items. I toggle on Fitness Stuff for athletic wear though, and sometimes Seasons for cold items. Those are universal packs that I can use for any sims.
I have playing with my sims family for 3 years. I’m only on my third generation but I used classic sims that have been used throughout the past sims generations, and expand/change their stories. I have never been so in love with a sims family before Don and Summer got together 🥹😭
i always give my sim the same shoes, like everyday, sports, hot weather, they wear the same sneakers and for party and formal they wear the same fancy shoes :) i also repeat makeup or accesories, too
“There are so many names here” * Cries in Swedish * Honestly, the Swedish installation of the game has 40 female forenames, 40 male forenames, and 40 surnames. It feels like all the autogenerated townies are named Lars Lilja and Hanna Möller.
Same with the Norwegian game. All I saw was Mona Hansen and Per Olsen. Thats why i changed the language to english. Took some getting used to, but now i could never go back to the Norwegian version. Love the name generation.
I feel you. The Italian version has this problem too, not much with the forenames but there are only like 5 surnames. Everyone's surname is Bianchi, Palumbo, Rinaldi, Ricci or Russo basically. I changed the language to English, but I prefer Italian/French/German names because they feel closer to me and less like a movie character or a celebrity. And since there aren't enough to randomize, I always struggle to find some more creative ones 😫
Same in german. Why dont they mix all of that? It would be awesome to get a random italian or swedish name. Maybe i would have more story ideas. It adds so much depth
I've grown to like that you can only pick 3 traits to begin with. It means the personality I give my sims to start with is limited, but then it develops over time through how I play with them, through reward traits and the likes/dislikes and fears they develop etc. I think it's a much better system then if they allowed you to pick your sims entire personality right at the start.
i love playing on long lifespan, it really helps develop the sims youre playing and having more time to get to know them. plus you aren't in a rush to have children and further to legacy!!
I love these tips! I get bored with my sims so often, I have over 300 families saved 😭 this just helped me be able to learn my sim and who they are and hopefully I can play with them for months
This is seriously right on time. I have been starting new families and storylines every 4-5 weeks. By the time I reach the 3rd generation - I realize that's it's not my family. I simply don't vibe with the townies! As story progression happens and townies age into teens - the crazy outfits happen - and I am no longer interested. Guys, please use Oshin's tips to revamp your ugly townies and give them a style. THEN ACTUALLY GET YOUR SIMS OUTSIDE TO MEET THEM, LOL!
Yess I love this tips!! A lot of them remind me of similar stuff I’ve done with a most of my recent households. Like the career thing, a sim of mine was an aspiring musician but working part-time as barista in Oasis Springs. She did end up quitting her job and releasing some songs, but as she grew older she became a florist and moved to Mt. Komorebi to live closer to her boyfriend (now husband). I also did this other thing with her where I didn’t decorate her house too much and left it plain for her to put her paintings, stuff from the flea market (specifically this one lamp that has been with her through all the changes in her life like her moving houses, divorce, etc.) , plus other things she gains throughout the game. Playing in other simmers’ saves helps a lot too! I will definitely these tips when I get the chance!! Loved the video
I love the idea of signature style. I like to select a signature color for my sims and incorporate it into each outfit, including the makeup. I make sure the jewelry compliments the color chosen.
I have been evolving my playstyle to fit fleshing out my characters through a very wide scope. This video has been really helpful, especially the long term and short term goals thing! I'm very glad to get advice from another Simmer who is really has keen experience on storytelling within the game 🥺

I absolutely love this video! I’m so glad you started in CAS because sometimes I go in to make a sim super quick and end up falling in love with them! I try and give my sims like 5 outfits for everyday, hot weather, and cold weather but end up liking the sims I give less outfits to more! Especially putting a story behind items like my sim never wears heels because they once fell while wearing them at a school dance and vowed to never wear them again!

I wish you could hate cats in the game, but The Sims 4 is a utopia that won't allow you to simulate like a.k.a. "can't hate anything". Maybe if EA update likes and dislikes to include all traits then we could "dislike cats."

My daughter just went on my computer and erased my whole sims 4 folder so i lost my current household that i was attached to. I was on gen 4 smh. She delted everything cc and all i was crushed yesterday 😩 so i had to start fresh and im trying to get the feel of my new sim
I absolutely loved this! I was on a FaceTime call with my partner last night, commentating over current playthrough and explain the little storytelling aspects I've sprinkled into my household's story. It felt so odd and it doesn't add much to the core gameplay, but it definitely helps you immerse yourself into your sim's life.

I love this and this is definitely how I play to keep my sims interesting to me! I especially used to think I needed totally original outfits but I realized we all rewear everything we have and it actually gives the sim character when they mix up the same clothes 💙 this gave me more inspiration to play, thank you oshin!!
Another fashion for your sims is to every once awhile make up some kind of trend your sims all follow. Like tights could be really popular one season and the next the color green. Not all your sims have to follow the seasons trends but the ones who love fashion and who would watch the runways would want to follow those trends or even set them. You can also real life as an inspiration.
I think making this the last season is good enough. I feel like too many seasons may start to make it boring. You could always do bonus episodes from time to time. Little updates about how everyone's life is going. 😊
Step 1: Recreate a Sim from another game/TV Show, Movie you love Step 2: Put in your worlds other sims from that franchise and other you like step 3: now play them, you have ideas for storys and drama also in sims 3 I want to play with an household full of occults, so I create a nice WG and now I play them in sims 4 too :)
i love randomizing my stuff in cas. With names I'll slightly change the one I choose into something else, recently made the name "Delilah" into "Daria" instead and she's my fav sim atm. With clothes I'll choose the ugliest item and make everything else match that one well lol. I do always match aspirations, traits and jobs 😅 unless their teens, I love giving teens part time jobs that don't match them bc as a teen I had jobs that didn't match my goals but had to tough thru them lol
omg I make a big family too and then save it to my gallery then go into worlds and just put everyone everywhere away from each other and then have them meet up lol. I do not like keeping families close and tight 😭
I agree with the keeping the same clothing items for different sims. I have my rags to riches sims only have one pear of jeans or two pairs of shoes that they have to wear for every outfit until they get more money to afford more clothes
I love seeing creators who love ts4! I think it's a lot of fun, and I honestly think part of the reason so many of us LOVED ts2 & 3 is because we were kids/teens when it came out. I've enjoyed playing so much more recently because I've been focusing on slowing down and playing the every day life/story of my sims more. I have sims that I actually enjoy, who have memories, families, and personalities. Sometimes I goof and have them do things sooner than I'd like, or make decisions that might not be true to their personality, but generally I try to play as the sim I made
One thing that really stops me from creating the same sim over and over again is assigning them a custom style/aesthetic. I have a list of various aesthetics like vintage (retro 50's, 60's, 70''s...), Y2K, sporty, goth, artsy, dark/light academia, angelcore, cottagecore, twee, gypsy, pastel, kawaii, normcore, punk, even coastal grandma (lol)... when I create a new Sim I use a RN generator to pick a style and then build their look, traits, skills and aspirations around that style, for example if I get indie aesthetic I can make them be a musical genius or a lawyer if I get one of the academias. That applies to their hairstyle, outfits, houses, favorite food/drinks, whole lifestyle etc. On the other hand, if I'm playing a challenge and have to follow rules - e.g. if one gen is supposed to be a (serial) romantic mixologist living in San My, I pick an appropriate style that goes well with the rules of the challenge - this could be the baddie aesthetic, Y2K, e-girl and so on. I then use these aesthetics to furnish their rooms/homes etc. If you have an aesthetic picked it's also easy to pick a color palette for them (except for not so berry of course). Ever since I started doing this I've made sooo many different sims and all of them were fun to play. I really try to lean into the whole aesthetic vibe. If you're playing without any rules (no challenge) it's also fun to do this when a child is born so you can start with their name for example, and build a whole story around why they will be e.g. preppy later. That said this only really works with custom content because there's just not as many (good) options in game for example goths or angelcore. 😅
This really helped. With the base game having added CAS over time, I challenged myself to make a base game sim, and it was the best decision I’ve made in this game because it forced me to use items I never would have used before. The sim I made was a male sim. I rolled a few times, and eventually landed on a white man with blond hair and dark brown eyes. I then gave him some stubble, added bits of makeup to make certain features pop, and then started with accessories. I started by putting silver earring in his ears for every outfit (since everyone I know has earrings) and while I was scrolling through other accessories, I noticed the necklace with the tag on the end. Then his story immediately clicked into place. He went from a test sim to an ex-soldier who was still mourning the death of his wife to a point where he still wore his wedding ring. The only thing he has left is his deaf daughter, who he loves dearly. Then (because I thought he was very handsome) I created another sim that was going to be his neighbour, and she was a very beautiful but cruel lady who wanted his attention, so she murdered his wife. The drama one necklace spawned was so much fun. Haven’t had a blast creating a sim in years!
I like to add sims from old sims games like Daddy big bucks or Misty Waters as they were such interesting characters in the spin offs and I like to build on their characters in a new space it really brings more depth to my gameplay
When I redecorate, I usually change all of those $300 doors to the $50 ones and book cases to that $10 one which will give me more funds to decorate with. 😊 I love these vids!
I find that the sims I get attached to are the ones I don't create in cas and instead the sims that that are not and I feel like you can never have the same connection with a sim you create in cas then a sim who you play through their entire life.
This video just *re*invigorated me to actually play the heck out of my game. I've been building in the sims the most just because that's what I enjoyed, but I've really missed telling myself the fun made up stories just like this. ♥ Thank you!

One thing I've stopped doing is automatically giving my sims any job. I think how it is in real life. In order to get some jobs you have to move to certain states. So I try to break the jobs down by Sim Worlds. For example Fashion/Influenced Jobs are for San Myshuno, so that means my sim has to live in that world in order to get those types of jobs.

Love this! It’s the way I’ve finally started playing. I play completely vanilla, set on long, ageing on but I control it, so age up early if they are ready or switch it off I I feel they need more time. I often forget to adjust their first home, so thank you for all the reminders in this video. My current family I am completely involved with despite there not being any extreme drama. An aunt caring for a toddler who has now reached the time to apply to uni. What has really kept me involved is telling their story on Facebook with screenshots (I am too incompetent to do RUclips!) where I am The Ancient Simmer, because I am truly ancient 😂. I love your videos especially the Bandharies (sorry I forget how to spell that) and the Asher’s. A big Thank You. ( sorry this is so long)

I love giving my sims a color that they love. You know how like the joke of "people who love purple always overwhelm with purple"? I then just be like ok maybe they have orange flairs for each outfit, or green accents. Or just go all out. I think I want to make more occult sims (I haven't in a while)
You *definitely* need to be making up your own stories to play Sims 4 at all 😔 I think it’s a very stunted game: Sims 2 gave us a lot of stories, Sims 3 gave us a lot of world-building; Sims 4 barely has anything unfortunately. I find the first couple of days the most exciting tbf, it’s when they’re new! I also usually create multiple Sims in a household, but only focus on one which is my ‘main character’. My latest save consists of 4 ‘households’ living in a little house collective-ish thing I built in San Myshuno in that house lot. I have a family with 2 children; an elderly couple; and two young adult women. I went in focusing on one, but the other almost instantly became far more interesting to me. All 4 houses are the same on the outside, but the styles are entirely different on the inside. I had an idea for a condo but apparently you can have a maximum of 8 Sims in a single household?? 😤😢 I was looking forward to making an entire community so they’d all interact and whatnot. I most hate that we can’t play as cats and dogs, but they count towards the household number 😠
That first Sim is better than any Sim I've ever made or will make. All of my Sims look alike. I really can not make pretty Sims girls, guys, teens, kiddos or toddlers. I mostly go to gallery and download nicely made Sims, but if they already have traits, even when I change, those bad moods still show up 😒 I'm not like other players that cause chaos in their Sims life. Mine has to go perfect, unlike my rl I guess. They don't die (on purpose). I used to play on long play only then age back caused I know they are about to age up. I started playing rags to riches and 100 baby, so I go normal aging now a just cry when they die lol
hii i'm very late to this video but i loveee this video so much! i'm sick of seeing people say that the sims 4 is boring, compared to the other games, it lacks gameplay and detail, but it is still a fun game! something i learned recently is that like you said, the sims 4 is very dollhouse. there is a LOT of setup involved to actually enjoy the game. i used to spent hours making the family, a beautiful house, setting up everything and i'd be burnt out by the time i'm done. i love the points about spending too much time in CAS and build mode because it's so true, i think that the sims is a fun game, but it's draining with how much you need to do to develop a story. another thing is that i think the club system is a really fun way to add detail to a sim because they might be in an art club, they might be in a dancing club and it adds sm detail to their personality and they can easily make friends. i've made a dance team for teenagers and they'd go and practice in the gym in willow creek and i've made a 'family business' club where the extended family would come over and hang out and make drinks. it's great for holidays because i can just start the 'meeting' and they are all eating a holiday turkey or something! i love your videos, they inspire me to try new things :D
Something that always helps me is to build the sims house first. You can start to create a story line and backstory in your head which helps connect to the sims. Then you can make the sim around the house not the house around the sims.
I was thinking about playing sims 4 again because I really want to but I never know what to do when I'm actually in gameplay, (200+ hours mostly building lol) and I honestly have to say I really liked this video!! it helps a lot AND it's entertaining 😊! I'm horrible at making original sims and end up playing as my simself which does get really boring really fast tbh so it's nice to see pointers from someone who feels very experienced lol And about aging, I 100% agree and yet I never thought of making lifespan long in my game till now, I feel like playing normally makes me feel like I have to rush playing through like GO GO GO GET ON THE GRIND FINISH ASPIRATIONS ETC ETC, but it'd probably be way nicer to play on long lifespan/turn off aging completely, feels like I'm an adult for an hour total of gameplay lmao 😭

I really like your tips. I tend to do perfect sims with perfect lives. Recently I made a musican, his main skill was guitar. He was close to lvl 10 in guitar so he could start bringing some money and then, game decided to randomly ask me if he is disliking guitar. At first i wanted to click no, but I thought that maybe I should go with the flow. He still could play just got negative modlets lol and you can made story to that, why he disliked thing he did his whole life. After licensing few songs, he abandoned guitar, gave it to his son and started exploring selvadorada. Sometimes it's good to not do things according to plan and catch what the game is trying to push on you xD

Yeah, I used to do that to, where I'd make perfectly dressed Sims with aspirations matching their career, etc. Never used any of the "bad" traits like lazy or evil. But recently I started exploring my options in traits and experimenting with funky clothing styles and such, just to make my game a bit spicier and it's been so much fun!
i LOVE seeing ur process!!! your way of creating a foundation to build off of is so natural and easy !! i also like switching around and playing different households (especially the ones with family and friends) in order to feel more connected to the save. it's all about being invested in the sims outside your main household!! otherwise you won't care if your sim has a social life !! thank you for this

The sim I’m playing with now makes it feel like I’m playing the game for the first time again 😭 she’s the third generation of a family I was playing with. it’s really enjoyable, the only problem is I’ve turned aging off and I don’t think anything can convince me to turn it back on….. I’ll be so sad to see her as an elder lol
All your suggestions and opinions are totally spot on. I love this game and getting into your sims heads makes all the difference. i love dressing sims based on how i think they’ll dress. it definitely ups the personality of the sim. i reuse items as well. i try to make it as realistic as i can. :D i’ll definitely try out the gameplay tips

i thought you were going to mention that you should pick the aspiration you want long term because the bonus trait you get from that one can't be changed but you can switch between actual aspirations as many times as you like!
what i like to do to make completely unique sims is randomise the mother and father, play with genetics and then age up the child to use as the base. i delete the parents >_>
also if i am doing family gameplay, i give the mum or dad something distinctive that they wear like a necklace or hat and then when they get old i go back into CAS and they pass it on to one of their kids to wear ;_;

I’ve been playing the sims for over 20 years (I’m 29) and the game has gotten SOO boring to me. Idk if it’s this sims 4 franchise or just the fact that I’m getting older. I’ll go through the CAS process, sometimes I even make it to build/buy but once it’s time for gameplay, I completely lose interest. I’ll definitely try these tips to see if I can get that spark back!

For me, there is just something about starting out with a rags to riches type of deal that makes me way more likely to enjoy a sim. I very rarely start a sim off with the 20k and don't wind up abandoning them 'cause I'm bored. This has been consistently true for me from sims 2 to now and I have no idea why I am so incapable of connecting to sims who don't start out on an empty lot, lol

I only enjoy Sims when I'm on the grind too, I totally get it. I think my biggest gripe in TS4 is how quick it is to get rich. I might look for a mod that makes money more reasonable. I don't want to play on short lifespan to make it take longer to build generational success because there's no time for relationships or hobbies. But I did a cottage living family and didn't have my Sim start a family until she reached adulthood. But the time their daughter was a young adult I had already moved into a huge house and they had a retail store, etc.
@@kwiggy5091 There is a mod that halves salaries! I don't tend to give my sims actual jobs if I can avoid it (idk why), which also helps. There is also at least one mod that makes it necessary to go to uni to progress in careers, and some that make uni more expensive which definitely all eat up money!

I tend to also avoid traditional jobs for my main Sims but their spouse is normally who I get to do stuff I don't like and they usually have a 9-5 LOL. Or sometimes when my main played sim is older and I'm onto the next gen I'll plop them into a career just for something to do. By then they're maxed all their skills and aspiration stuff I've wanted to work on. But great to know all that. Honestly I normally just cheat money back down but with the inventory glitch that puts my whole farm in the household inventory I've gotten in the habit of super selling all to avoid the hassle of dragging each one. I'd rather leave everything on the vine until I need to harvest for the simple living trait or to make some money.

One small thing I love to do is have the same necklace/bracelet on almost every outfit so it's like their favorite piece of jewelry
A braided bracelet for a more tomboy sim and a rose gold heart for a girly sim
A masc sim who always wears a fitbit
I do the same thing! One of my sims is a spellcaster so I have him wear a certain necklace with every outfit and pretend its some magical heirloom passed onto him
The 2 qualities and 1 flaw thing is something that I've always done playing the sims, even with the sims 3 (where we could pick 5 traits, so I'd pick 3 qualities and 2 flaws). Besides being more realistic, it's a lot more fun than having the perfect immaculate sim
When I play generationally (which I basically always do lo), I have their "bad" trait be something they gain as a teen, At that point they have one good, one bad, and then when they age up to an adult, they get another good one.
Trust me she knows what she is talking about. I actually thought about the style thing awhile back when I first started my legacy challenge and it makes the sim feel so much more real. Another thing I did was gave them on trait and gave them more as I "discovered" more about them. It has made me actually want to play the legacy.
I definitely do the "signature style" already ! I notice that sometimes when I'm creating a party outfit with maybe using the same jeans as the everyday outfit, I think: Hey this could be a cute every day outfit! Then I add it.
What I like for traits is even if you pick seemingly only "good" traits, you can spin a little twist on it using story telling. Along the lines of "two sides of the same coin".
Examples of these traits that I use a lot for this are perfectionist & ambitious.
You can say that they lead for your sim to be a workaholic and might overwork themselves.
This intersects with the new lifestyles so well too. I don't know if they've tweaked them or what but I notice way more effect from lifestyles lately (especially the workaholic one).
I really liked the idea of adding a relative in CAS and moving them out, including for already existing sims. Because I'm a veteran Sims 2 player I tend to forget the additional flexibility of TS4, like I don't actually have to modify sims' relationships through a third-party tool like SimPE, I can just jump into CAS at any time and create whatever relatives I feel like. In other words: I'm definitely going to be using this trick.
I also liked the idea of repeating small personal items throughout a sim's clothing choices (like the friendship bracelet or the same pair of shoes). Being a person with a very out-there fashion sense I tend to struggle creating sims with a more restrained, simple approach to clothes that still feels personal. Creating a realistic goth or a raver clubkid is way easier than a lass-next-door kinda gal. So thank you for these tips!
Another advice I can do for fleshing out characters and premades personally is to look into what causes why they have certain traits and how the people in that certain household are affected.
In my Komorebi mega save, I interpreted the idea that since Naoki is at best a workaholic, he is mostly absent from his kids when he is needed the most and spoils them to make up for things.. This could mean in contrast that this can be another cost to why Nanami is a kleptomaniac.. to cope with the lack of attention from her father and to gain it from him when even the lack of material gifts from him as "love" cannot be given to her.

To give each of my sims a style, I always filter the clothes to show only 1 expansion, 1 game, and 1 stuff pack, and I work from that only. It's a fun way to really see what each pack offers. If no items show up, I toggle on the base game items. I toggle on Fitness Stuff for athletic wear though, and sometimes Seasons for cold items. Those are universal packs that I can use for any sims.
I have playing with my sims family for 3 years. I’m only on my third generation but I used classic sims that have been used throughout the past sims generations, and expand/change their stories. I have never been so in love with a sims family before Don and Summer got together 🥹😭
i always give my sim the same shoes, like everyday, sports, hot weather, they wear the same sneakers and for party and formal they wear the same fancy shoes :)
i also repeat makeup or accesories, too

Honestly, the Swedish installation of the game has 40 female forenames, 40 male forenames, and 40 surnames. It feels like all the autogenerated townies are named Lars Lilja and Hanna Möller.
Same with the Norwegian game. All I saw was Mona Hansen and Per Olsen. Thats why i changed the language to english. Took some getting used to, but now i could never go back to the Norwegian version. Love the name generation.
I feel you. The Italian version has this problem too, not much with the forenames but there are only like 5 surnames. Everyone's surname is Bianchi, Palumbo, Rinaldi, Ricci or Russo basically.
I changed the language to English, but I prefer Italian/French/German names because they feel closer to me and less like a movie character or a celebrity. And since there aren't enough to randomize, I always struggle to find some more creative ones 😫

I've grown to like that you can only pick 3 traits to begin with. It means the personality I give my sims to start with is limited, but then it develops over time through how I play with them, through reward traits and the likes/dislikes and fears they develop etc. I think it's a much better system then if they allowed you to pick your sims entire personality right at the start.
i love playing on long lifespan, it really helps develop the sims youre playing and having more time to get to know them. plus you aren't in a rush to have children and further to legacy!!
I love these tips! I get bored with my sims so often, I have over 300 families saved 😭 this just helped me be able to learn my sim and who they are and hopefully I can play with them for months
This is seriously right on time. I have been starting new families and storylines every 4-5 weeks. By the time I reach the 3rd generation - I realize that's it's not my family. I simply don't vibe with the townies! As story progression happens and townies age into teens - the crazy outfits happen - and I am no longer interested. Guys, please use Oshin's tips to revamp your ugly townies and give them a style. THEN ACTUALLY GET YOUR SIMS OUTSIDE TO MEET THEM, LOL!
Yess I love this tips!! A lot of them remind me of similar stuff I’ve done with a most of my recent households. Like the career thing, a sim of mine was an aspiring musician but working part-time as barista in Oasis Springs. She did end up quitting her job and releasing some songs, but as she grew older she became a florist and moved to Mt. Komorebi to live closer to her boyfriend (now husband).
I also did this other thing with her where I didn’t decorate her house too much and left it plain for her to put her paintings, stuff from the flea market (specifically this one lamp that has been with her through all the changes in her life like her moving houses, divorce, etc.) , plus other things she gains throughout the game. Playing in other simmers’ saves helps a lot too!

I love the idea of signature style. I like to select a signature color for my sims and incorporate it into each outfit, including the makeup. I make sure the jewelry compliments the color chosen.
I have been evolving my playstyle to fit fleshing out my characters through a very wide scope. This video has been really helpful, especially the long term and short term goals thing! I'm very glad to get advice from another Simmer who is really has keen experience on storytelling within the game 🥺

I absolutely love this video! I’m so glad you started in CAS because sometimes I go in to make a sim super quick and end up falling in love with them! I try and give my sims like 5 outfits for everyday, hot weather, and cold weather but end up liking the sims I give less outfits to more! Especially putting a story behind items like my sim never wears heels because they once fell while wearing them at a school dance and vowed to never wear them again!

I absolutely loved this! I was on a FaceTime call with my partner last night, commentating over current playthrough and explain the little storytelling aspects I've sprinkled into my household's story. It felt so odd and it doesn't add much to the core gameplay, but it definitely helps you immerse yourself into your sim's life.

Another fashion for your sims is to every once awhile make up some kind of trend your sims all follow. Like tights could be really popular one season and the next the color green. Not all your sims have to follow the seasons trends but the ones who love fashion and who would watch the runways would want to follow those trends or even set them. You can also real life as an inspiration.

I think making this the last season is good enough. I feel like too many seasons may start to make it boring. You could always do bonus episodes from time to time. Little updates about how everyone's life is going. 😊

Step 2: Put in your worlds other sims from that franchise and other you like
step 3: now play them, you have ideas for storys and drama

i love randomizing my stuff in cas. With names I'll slightly change the one I choose into something else, recently made the name "Delilah" into "Daria" instead and she's my fav sim atm. With clothes I'll choose the ugliest item and make everything else match that one well lol. I do always match aspirations, traits and jobs 😅 unless their teens, I love giving teens part time jobs that don't match them bc as a teen I had jobs that didn't match my goals but had to tough thru them lol
omg I make a big family too and then save it to my gallery then go into worlds and just put everyone everywhere away from each other and then have them meet up lol. I do not like keeping families close and tight 😭
I agree with the keeping the same clothing items for different sims. I have my rags to riches sims only have one pear of jeans or two pairs of shoes that they have to wear for every outfit until they get more money to afford more clothes
I love seeing creators who love ts4! I think it's a lot of fun, and I honestly think part of the reason so many of us LOVED ts2 & 3 is because we were kids/teens when it came out. I've enjoyed playing so much more recently because I've been focusing on slowing down and playing the every day life/story of my sims more. I have sims that I actually enjoy, who have memories, families, and personalities. Sometimes I goof and have them do things sooner than I'd like, or make decisions that might not be true to their personality, but generally I try to play as the sim I made
One thing that really stops me from creating the same sim over and over again is assigning them a custom style/aesthetic. I have a list of various aesthetics like vintage (retro 50's, 60's, 70''s...), Y2K, sporty, goth, artsy, dark/light academia, angelcore, cottagecore, twee, gypsy, pastel, kawaii, normcore, punk, even coastal grandma (lol)... when I create a new Sim I use a RN generator to pick a style and then build their look, traits, skills and aspirations around that style, for example if I get indie aesthetic I can make them be a musical genius or a lawyer if I get one of the academias. That applies to their hairstyle, outfits, houses, favorite food/drinks, whole lifestyle etc.
On the other hand, if I'm playing a challenge and have to follow rules - e.g. if one gen is supposed to be a (serial) romantic mixologist living in San My, I pick an appropriate style that goes well with the rules of the challenge - this could be the baddie aesthetic, Y2K, e-girl and so on. I then use these aesthetics to furnish their rooms/homes etc. If you have an aesthetic picked it's also easy to pick a color palette for them (except for not so berry of course). Ever since I started doing this I've made sooo many different sims and all of them were fun to play. I really try to lean into the whole aesthetic vibe. If you're playing without any rules (no challenge) it's also fun to do this when a child is born so you can start with their name for example, and build a whole story around why they will be e.g. preppy later.
That said this only really works with custom content because there's just not as many (good) options in game for example goths or angelcore. 😅
This really helped. With the base game having added CAS over time, I challenged myself to make a base game sim, and it was the best decision I’ve made in this game because it forced me to use items I never would have used before.
The sim I made was a male sim. I rolled a few times, and eventually landed on a white man with blond hair and dark brown eyes. I then gave him some stubble, added bits of makeup to make certain features pop, and then started with accessories. I started by putting silver earring in his ears for every outfit (since everyone I know has earrings) and while I was scrolling through other accessories, I noticed the necklace with the tag on the end. Then his story immediately clicked into place.
He went from a test sim to an ex-soldier who was still mourning the death of his wife to a point where he still wore his wedding ring. The only thing he has left is his deaf daughter, who he loves dearly.
Then (because I thought he was very handsome) I created another sim that was going to be his neighbour, and she was a very beautiful but cruel lady who wanted his attention, so she murdered his wife. The drama one necklace spawned was so much fun. Haven’t had a blast creating a sim in years!

I like to add sims from old sims games like Daddy big bucks or Misty Waters as they were such interesting characters in the spin offs and I like to build on their characters in a new space it really brings more depth to my gameplay
When I redecorate, I usually change all of those $300 doors to the $50 ones and book cases to that $10 one which will give me more funds to decorate with. 😊 I love these vids!
I find that the sims I get attached to are the ones I don't create in cas and instead the sims that that are not and I feel like you can never have the same connection with a sim you create in cas then a sim who you play through their entire life.

One thing I've stopped doing is automatically giving my sims any job. I think how it is in real life. In order to get some jobs you have to move to certain states. So I try to break the jobs down by Sim Worlds. For example Fashion/Influenced Jobs are for San Myshuno, so that means my sim has to live in that world in order to get those types of jobs.

Love this! It’s the way I’ve finally started playing. I play completely vanilla, set on long, ageing on but I control it, so age up early if they are ready or switch it off I I feel they need more time. I often forget to adjust their first home, so thank you for all the reminders in this video. My current family I am completely involved with despite there not being any extreme drama. An aunt caring for a toddler who has now reached the time to apply to uni. What has really kept me involved is telling their story on Facebook with screenshots (I am too incompetent to do RUclips!) where I am The Ancient Simmer, because I am truly ancient 😂. I love giving my sims a color that they love. You know how like the joke of "people who love purple always overwhelm with purple"? I then just be like ok maybe they have orange flairs for each outfit, or green accents. Or just go all out.

You *definitely* need to be making up your own stories to play Sims 4 at all 😔 I think it’s a very stunted game: Sims 2 gave us a lot of stories, Sims 3 gave us a lot of world-building; Sims 4 barely has anything unfortunately.
I find the first couple of days the most exciting tbf, it’s when they’re new! I also usually create multiple Sims in a household, but only focus on one which is my ‘main character’.
My latest save consists of 4 ‘households’ living in a little house collective-ish thing I built in San Myshuno in that house lot. I have a family with 2 children; an elderly couple; and two young adult women. I went in focusing on one, but the other almost instantly became far more interesting to me. All 4 houses are the same on the outside, but the styles are entirely different on the inside. I had an idea for a condo but apparently you can have a maximum of 8 Sims in a single household?? 😤😢 I was looking forward to making an entire community so they’d all interact and whatnot. I most hate that we can’t play as cats and dogs, but they count towards the household number 😠
That first Sim is better than any Sim I've ever made or will make. All of my Sims look alike. I really can not make pretty Sims girls, guys, teens, kiddos or toddlers. I mostly go to gallery and download nicely made Sims, but if they already have traits, even when I change, those bad moods still show up 😒 I'm not like other players that cause chaos in their Sims life. Mine has to go perfect, unlike my rl I guess. They don't die (on purpose). I used to play on long play only then age back caused I know they are about to age up. I started playing rags to riches and 100 baby, so I go normal aging now a just cry when they die lol
hii i'm very late to this video but i loveee this video so much! i'm sick of seeing people say that the sims 4 is boring, compared to the other games, it lacks gameplay and detail, but it is still a fun game! something i learned recently is that like you said, the sims 4 is very dollhouse. there is a LOT of setup involved to actually enjoy the game. i used to spent hours making the family, a beautiful house, setting up everything and i'd be burnt out by the time i'm done.
i love the points about spending too much time in CAS and build mode because it's so true, i think that the sims is a fun game, but it's draining with how much you need to do to develop a story. another thing is that i think the club system is a really fun way to add detail to a sim because they might be in an art club, they might be in a dancing club and it adds sm detail to their personality and they can easily make friends. i've made a dance team for teenagers and they'd go and practice in the gym in willow creek and i've made a 'family business' club where the extended family would come over and hang out and make drinks. it's great for holidays because i can just start the 'meeting' and they are all eating a holiday turkey or something! i love your videos, they inspire me to try new things :D

I swear I love your channel. I have a favorite sim, Rakul Padhi who is part of my LP. I'm going to try these tips with a new sim.
Something that always helps me is to build the sims house first. You can start to create a story line and backstory in your head which helps connect to the sims. Then you can make the sim around the house not the house around the sims.
I was thinking about playing sims 4 again because I really want to but I never know what to do when I'm actually in gameplay, (200+ hours mostly building lol) and I honestly have to say I really liked this video!! it helps a lot AND it's entertaining 😊! I'm horrible at making original sims and end up playing as my simself which does get really boring really fast tbh so it's nice to see pointers from someone who feels very experienced lol
And about aging, I 100% agree and yet I never thought of making lifespan long in my game till now, I feel like playing normally makes me feel like I have to rush playing through like GO GO GO GET ON THE GRIND FINISH ASPIRATIONS ETC ETC, but it'd probably be way nicer to play on long lifespan/turn off aging completely, feels like I'm an adult for an hour total of gameplay lmao 😭
I just redownloaded sims 4 and decided to play around with the base game before I start adding in cc and mods. This video helped alot, thanks 🎀
Thank you so much for this video! I always have trouble actually loving my sims because I don’t really feel a connection to them. I usually play for 3-6 hours and just quit. I’ll keep this video in mind and hopefully be able to not get burned out as fast!!
