When I was in highschool in the late '60's James Musselman was my art Teacher in Allentown, PA. He was a phenomenal Water Color Artist. He recommended me for Pratt Institute but my parents said no. I eventually started a sales career with Hunt Manufacturing which I loved and worked with Daniel Smith in Seattle and they were great. Working full time in many other industries over the years to support myself and my son never took me away from my love of making art. I just wonder how much I can accomplish in the rest of my years now in my retirement. Life is so darned short but I know I lived every moment. I hope I can accomplish more in the years God will grant me but I am getting kind of tired. I absolutely loved this video and will for sure follow Gabriel's videos like I follow yours. Thank You so much for some hope that I can continue my love for art and painting for many years.
this was so much fun! You both have amazing energy and listening while painting was a delight. Subscribed to Gabriel before this ended. Thanks to both of you! 😊
Hullo Steve, I loved hearing someone talk about using good supplies! I know the "trends" are finding the cheap source of supplies, but how many cheap brushes will you have to buy when if you just purchased a good brush that will last years you will save money in the long run! I have only 1 Kolinsky #12 round brush that was my Grandmothers! Now I do not use it for every painting as it is very sentimental to me and I love just looking at it when I am painting. It is over 60 years old and still works great! I do hope to find time to watch more of Gabriel's content Thanks Steve!
Hi Steve, Jim from Madrid, Spain (a fellow artist and a New Yorker expat living abroad). Loved this video with you talking with another great Artist (Gabriel!). Loved the whole thing... extremely inspiring for other artists! So Thank you all (Gabriel and yourself) very much! Additionally, just wanted to say that (as an Artist) one very good thing of living in Spain is to have access to Escoda Brushes (Watercolor, Gouache, Acrylic & Oil) at a very decent price in comparison to other brands, since they're made here "in country". The Escoda quality is AMAZING and the company too (if you buy one if their products through them and you have any problem, they usually solve it for you... extremely good quality service). The quality of their brushes is... spectacular! I know that from a price point perspective they might be expensive, but so are many other good brands for us here in Spain (Da Vinci - German but still a bit more; Raphael - French but still a bit more; and forget about buying US brands here in Europe, Like Princeton or other top brands... just NOT worth it economically). This happens due to import/export costs plus taxes, etc. But it has nothing to do with quality. In many international videos I watch in RUclips I see some people complaining about the quality versus price... but they are not taking into account that the same thing happens to the brushes they like (specially videos from the US) for other people living in other countries... In any case (and Disclaimer! I do NOT have anything to do with the company), Escida brushes are one if the best brushes I've used and they are most if the brushes I have in my stash! Cheers from Sunny Spain! 😁👍😎✌
I should be sound asleep but after I started this video, I couldn’t wait until tomorrow to finish it! What grace, gratitude and humility these two men have…just blesses my heart. I will check out Gabriel’s watercolor Wednesday in the morning because it will be Wednesday! Thank you for introducing us to this fine gentleman Steve.
Such an inspiring interview! I loved listening to the both of you sharing your genuine passion and experiences with watercolor. Finding real people on RUclips seems so challenging but is so rewarding when you do. Thank you so much for sharing with us ❤❤❤
Hi Steve. Your videos are gifts and this one was no exception. The joys of painting that you & Gabriel share are inspiring, but the best lesson for me was how you both honour each other as people, as fellow artists and friends. What a happy hour of acknowledging the magic of art as well as the amazing people that one can meet on the journey! I love how faith is interwoven in everything you do. The Scripture at the end of each video warms my heart. Hugs from Canada.
Steve, I’ve been watching yours videos since 2018, learning from you, enjoying your style, your lessons, practices, jokes … It has been so much fun, THANK YOU!!! This interview was OMG, right on spot! You started with this artist lives in California, and I’m, “Ok, I’m in California, too” ( we moved here about a year ago) Then you go - he lives in Sand Diego, I’m like, “hmm, I’m in San Diego , too”. You mentioned Gabriel is a San Diego Watercolor Society member, and my thinking was “ Ohh, I recently joined it as well”. I even dared to submit a few of my paintings for the show, and some were juried into the exhibitions. There is still a long way for me on this journey of watercolor but I have so much fun. This is just incredible!!! I have not met Gabriel in person yet but so excited to meet him one day at SDWS gallery! Feel so grateful to you for sharing all your love for watercolor, and bringing me and others along on your path of love and passion for this medium!!! And thank you for your interview which lead me discover an amazing artist h=who lived just around the corner:-)
Great interview with Gabriel Stockton. Gabriel is an amazing painter and a great teacher, not to mention a genuinely nice guy. I recently became familiar with Gabriel when I started watching the Daniel Smith live Zoom sessions and joining Gabriel on his Watercolor Wednesdays. His friendly demeanor and positive attitude are refreshing. I especially appreciate his willingness to answer questions posed in the chat from beginners (like me) or more experienced painters. I'm grateful to you, Steve, for hosting Gabriel on your channel and to Gabriel for all the things he's taught me.
I have a tendency to shy away from longer vids, but I've always enjoyed MoWC content so I fired It up. Glad I did, you both hit so many things. Get yourself a space. I'm happy to say I should be able to accomplish that in a few months. Lay down the paint! I've been becoming more consistent with that in the form of small 3" x 5" thumbnails with the mindset that the colors will do what they do and if they aren't so hot I didn't burn a whole day and a bunch of paper making a mess. If it comes out ok then I might "plus it up". Gratefullness. Absolutely. I mean geez... I can see, can still hold a brush, can still learn, and on occasion I lay down some shapes that aren't horrible to look at. I call those all wins! I will be checking out Grateful Gabriel's stuff for sure. Have a blessed day!
I enjoyed the interview with Gabriel. He's one of my very favorite artists. I don't always get to catch his live vlogs, but I watch his replays. He is an amazing encourager. Just so you know, I'm a long time follower of The Mind of Watercolor. Thank you!
For many years I painted from photos in my study mainly and then recently I went on a 10 week holiday to Split, Croatia - which is a painter’s paradise and I sketched outdoors every single day, on some days I did 2 or 3 sketches - and for me, plein air painting/sketching has been the best teacher so far in my watercolour art journey…. there is a HUGE difference between my 1st sketch and the last one I did 10 weeks later, you can see in my sketchbook how I have improved daily… my confidence in my abilities has soared and for some reason I have NO fear or doubt at all when plein air painting/sketching whereas unfortunately I can’t say the same when painting in my study…. Great interview and lots of valuable information and encouragement, thank you.
Steve and Gabriel, this was extra special. Thanks so much for sharing your art journeys with us. I was most touched at the end when you both talked about gratitude. I've experienced a whole lot of loss in my life, but I've always felt the Good Lord has watched over me by giving me this artistic talent that has helped balance out the empty places of loss - and for this I've been most grateful. It has also helped me through cancer and other unforeseen life troubles. Having this to turn to in those times - words can't express what it has meant except to say besides feelings of gratitude, and also of healing.
I'm pretty sure that God drags me over to your channel when i hit a low in my life and here I am again being encouraged by both of you. I have subscribed to Gabriel's channel. Thanks.
Thankful for this interview and look forward to finding Gabriels live Wednesdays too. With just a tiny bit of effort we can learn each day, because we are blessed with the generosity of so many artists.
Never heard of this guy. Definitely gonna check out his RUclips channel. Thanks Steve! Loved this interview! Daniel Smith are my favorite paints. 😀My watercolor group in central Illinois does plain air on Wednesday mornings in the summer.
I had the ferrule fall off on my favorite escoda 8 round travel brush when I was in the back country of colorado painting on a hike. It was such a bummer.
Thank you so much for this, an introducing Gabrielle , really fascinating and inspiring, especially as I am a beginner. I have subscribed to his channel also.😊😊
What a wonderful interview so full of gems! I rarely paint outside as I'm allergic to everything, but the discussion on process has been invaluable. Thanks for bringing a new channel to my attention, I'm sure I'm his next subscriber!
There seems to be a trend of RUclipsrs interviewing other RUclipsrs. This suggests to me that there is nothing new to say and that RUclips itself will decline. Note the increase in RUclipsrs quitting.
Pretty cynical and quite inaccurate assessment of the interview format and it's value but I doubt you're interested in my take. RUclipsrs quitting is completely unrelated.

I think you can accomplish more than you think - but I feel the same way ❤
I agree I started back at 67
Thank you so much. Humility and gratitude- that sums up the both of you. ❤
Thank you too!

I rarely do plein air, but this interview still taught me plenty! Thank you Steve and Gabriel!

I'm so shy about going outdoors and paint. What colors to take, how to mix the colors I see.🤔
this is so fascinating! is it just me that thinks you two kind of look alike? 🤔
Great interview and I love the new artist you introduced to me! Thank you and yes, I will subscribe for sure!
Great interview. It kept me in suspense, hoping for cutaways to closeups of the work.
You'll get to see those when you subscribe and watch his videos. 😁
What a wonderful interview so full of gems! I rarely paint outside as I'm allergic to everything, but the discussion on process has been invaluable. Thanks for bringing a new channel to my attention, I'm sure I'm his next subscriber!
Wonderful!
I live near cheap joes ! I will look for your classes
"i'm gonna make your brushes , and we're gonna paint together . "
Gabriel is right that's the best Bromance Scenario . 🤣🤣🤣
Seriously!
Türkçe altyazı ekleyebilir misiniz lütfen ❤
I'm glad that you don't make haul videos
Agree that good supplies are a must, but there's no need for crates full of stuff
James Gurney? Dinotopia? Is that who you are discussing?
