Before eq or compression we need to balance the kick and bass or insert the VU meter first and then compress...? which one should i do first.

Thanks for writing: you need to roughly balance your work first, that is what we call gain staging. The next step is to apply the VUmeter to properly get actual level between the kick and bass.
