I grew up in the NYC area. I remember hearing the debut of "Let It be" on WABC and many others. My clock radio woke me up for school with Harry Harrison every morning. It was sad to see it go
It happened during this time, fans of the former station would ended up going to WYNY for their AC, and then WCBS-FM for the oldies. Plus more options to choose to listen to like WKTU which was 92-KTU as a dance station, WPLJ when they did a rock format until 1983 when it flipped to CHR, and then the two urban stations like WRKS when it was “Kiss-FM” and WBLS for their R&B music. “Kiss-FM” did the Mastermix segments including Shep Pettibone who did all of the songs that were chosen for the mix by the DJ. And as for WBLS, they also had Frankie Crocker on there, and the station was playing rap music when they got into mainstream like the Sugarhill Gang, Grandmaster Flash & the Furious Five, and others.
A sad day. I listened to 77 a lot in the late 70s, occasionally switching to WNBC at 66 or WCBS on FM only when the playlist on WABC became a little too repetitive. Radio hasn't been the same since then.
Only for the first few minutes. I started recording in the kitchen of the restaurant where I was working at the time. After a few minutes I moved the radio outside & the audio was better.
RIP-Ron & Dan-You guys were great!
Hard to believe it was forty years ago next Tuesday (5/10) that WABC made the transition from music to talk-Thanks for posting!
