This was actually really satisfying to watch 😂 made it through to the end!
Awesome!
24:39 good ol percussive maintenance
My usual experience when finding a VCR in the wild: "Cool a VCR! I hope its a Jv.... Magnavox" "Here's another! Maybe it will be a Panaso.... Magnavox" "Wow this one looks vintage could it be an RC.... Magnavox"
lol it's insane how many Magnavox VCRs were sold...
Hahahahahha! You might make it on the channel.
The Multi-Format panasonic probably converts the signal to PAL. You should be able to select the output standard in the menu.
Ooooooo. Can’t wait to try that!
Thank you!
Panasonic only did one VCR that converts, the NW-W1 (European model number, the US one could be AG-W1 or AG-W3). It's easily recognisable by a world map on the front, and it can indeed output any analogue video standard from any tape by selecting a button. Working ones go for several hundred, even broken ones fetch good money for the spare parts. A seller who would sell one of those for just a few dollars wouldn't know what he's doing.
The one in the video isn't a W1 obviously. It's one for the European market which also plays NTSC for imported tapes. About why NTSC is shown in b&w only see other comments.
Here in Brazil, every VCR used to work with PAL-M and NTSC. The analog TV transmission standard here was PAL-M. That's why every VCR had a switch or button to select PAL-M or NTSC. The newer models were operated through a remote control. ;-)
most multi-system VCRs default to NTSC on PAL TV, but there is a switch or button to change the output to NTSC 3.58 with most.
One thing you could do is with the VCRs that don't work properly is harvest the parts from the other machines that don't work to repair them. That's if the parts are compatible with the other machines and then you could get as many working as possible.
He should sell them as not working for parts. Cause other people definitely are looking. This is a niche. But it could take up quite a bit of space.
@ 13:46, With the Mask movie ejecting, I can hear Jim Carey saying "SMOKIN!' 😂 LOL!
That’s the joke!
😂😂😂
Thank you for this vid ECD! This was the first video I watched of yours and I have stayed updated ever since!
14:38 That is gunk from the automatic "Head Cleaning" sponge, which in these Magnavox units is a small, round yellow sponge like roller which quickly taps the head (supposedly cleaning it a bit), before and after each tape insert. Over time, they degrade and fill with gunk, causing it to actually place dirt onto the head rather than cleaning it. Then, your tape goes around that head which got the gunk on it, making gunk go onto the tape.
Sometimes if only the remote is used and never the buttons the buttons tend to gather dust etc or static inside them which either makes them useless or hard to function
Just a tip, when testing VCR cover the top with something as with some models the light messes with the IR tape sensors
It was funny a few years back when my VCR only worked with the lid on
I suspect that the second VCR had stuck head drum. I find this a lot. A gentle twist and off they spin.
15:46 movie intro makes me nostalgic because it looks like it came from early 2000’s on winter.
The PAL VCR is likely outputting NTSC 4.43. Basically the color carrier is at the PAL frequency, not the standard 3.58Mhz of NTSC. Your capture cards should be able to decode it.
Can’t wait to test this!
@@EmeraldCoastDigitizingIt says NTSC 3.58/4.43 on the front, so you might be able to put it to 3.58, see my other comment. Could be you need the remote for that.
Yup, it's either outputting NTSC 4.43 or PAL 60, some VCRs even have a switch to select between the two.
man this guy is so lucky, I genuinely need a working VCR for a project but I cant find any that work near me, either that or the ones I do find need to be shipped and are priced rediculously
anyways, other than that rant I loved the video, I love this kind of content
Man I'd love to dumpster dive at your place and pick up all those "broken ones" lol. I've been repairing and servicing VCRs for the past 15 years and I garentee majority of them just need the mode switch cleaned like the first one
Please do!
Those magnavox vhs dvd combos are usually durable i have one and it has ran since it was new in 2006 and it works great i got it in like 2019 i was like 9 but it still is with me today running like new
I got recently a lot of 4 free vcrs 2 Funai sv2000 vhs dvd combos 1 worked 1 didn't but I cleaned the mode switch and it worked then 1 synthonic that's totaled no load play tv etc and a rca that I haven't tested yet
And don't use the alcohol pad use the back side of your nail on the drum with light pressure applied that how you pro clean it I'm 14 but I know how to fix these and the rubbing alcohol eats the head
Lol hot shots on tape that's cool
I’m very lucky myself as I bought a VCR here in the UK from a charity store for dirt cheap and it works flawlessly - I’ve always owned LG players and was happy to see the charity shop one was an LG 4 head stereo machine with scart socket
Very very nice!
A lot of those VCRS could be fixed and saved with just a good mode select switch and head cleaning.
Definitely!
@@EmeraldCoastDigitizing I've fixed some VCRS back to normal condition.
The old VCR is better then the new ones
Agreed!
@@EmeraldCoastDigitizingyou can reuse the parts of half damaged VCRs to repair the other half ones. Partslike belts, gears heads. Use hour creativity and imagination for that. Even the healthy video heads from a damaged VCR can be used to replace those from other damaged VCRs.
Agreed
I'm happy with the low end Orion VCP thing I have.
Like, I don't need to record to VHS most of the time, and the image is plenty good for me.
After the mid 90s they started cheapening VCRs big time. I remember in 2002-2004 going through like 3 different VCRS because they crapped out.
32:00 I have that exact make & model of Sanyo VCR.
That VCR was one of a very, VERY few VCR's that had a TVGuardian (TVG) foul language filter built into it!
Nice that it works & that it has the original remote, box & manual with it!
IMO, I wouldn't sell that one!
I won’t! Too copl
The first one you tried (Emerson) clean the mode switch, clean the plastic light guide for the end sensors. Bet you that would fix it. Mode switch has been a common problem in my shop.
I saw you testing just the VCR side of the combo machines and wondered why you also didn't check the DVD side before you put a green sticker on them.
I was at Goodwill a few weeks ago and I seen 3 VCR’s and I was half tempted to buy one. I was wondering is any of them dvd vhs combo’s are recording from vhs to dvd?
On the back of a Panasonic VCR, should be a switch for PAL, NTSC and SECAM/MESECAM. Have a look, because this might be why the picture is in black and white and not colour.
Some of those VCRs are going 19:34 to need their mode switches cleaned and they will work just fine. For the PAL machine you might have to set it to ntsc.
I agree. But I don’t wannaaaaaaa
@@EmeraldCoastDigitizing that's just being called lazy. I personally would attempt fixing all of them while i have my tapes being transferred in the background. It's not that difficult to manage time.
That Was Entertaining, at least some of them work so not a total loss, that double VCR player is cool! never seen one like that
Yeah and the hi8 camera made it worth it even without the vcrs!
cool lamp in da backround
I’ll sell it too ya
Make offer
Don't just trash the non-working ones! Like others have said, the mode switch is likely the only fault with many of them. At least give them away to someone who might be interested in fixing them.
I can’t throw anything away… note all the red stickers on other stuff in the shop. Lol 😂
I tried to fix mine, cleaned mode switch, cleaned all the sensors, the motors, checked the capacitors. Still doesn't work.
I had a Funai machine, it was with me for 15 years, the machine itself didn’t give out, the scart connector did, but by that time I was just hanging onto something I never used and I binned it.
Still got my stash of vhs tapes in the loft though 😉
Fuck yeah!
All the VCRs I've been using for converting tapes came out of a dumpster with the exception of my original Funai that now likes to chew tapes. I only keep them as spares if they're fairly decent 4/6 head models.
Most Funai units will develop a habit of eating tapes or just powering off, doesn't seem to matter what brand name badge the unit carried. Smasung junk combos the opposite and DVD typically won't read. The Sanyo units always have the same mind of it's own with input on the buttons or motherboard?
You can find gear. Just gotta keep an eye out right
@@EmeraldCoastDigitizingHow do I fix the eating tapes?
@17:20 "Don't touch that... you don't know where it's been!" 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
So gross
The first vcr had a slipping belt
It's amazing how many people think all VCRs are the same when they made everything from an 8 head VCR to a VCR with HDMI out , heck they even made an HD VCR , not SVHS , but full HD .
13:47 Sssssmokin'!
You get it
That shit was meta
Judging by what you said in the video you did the smoke on purpose to make people watch. Hope blowing smoke in there didn't damage any of the VCR's components!
I just don’t think sometimes. Thanks for your thoughts. I’m just trying to have fun.
@@Tomsonic41Probably not much.... These things are old and probably suffer more from dust and a bit tarnish then from the bit of smoke 🤣
Sansui seems to be a good brand. The monitor I'm watching this video on is a 19 inch Sansui flat screen TV and it was purchased back in the late 2000s and still works.
I wish I could take all of those garbage VCRs off your hands but I'm not in FL. Would be cool if people could travel in dropships like in the movie Starship Troopers and just fly anywhere they want.
I saw the macrovision in some of those shots of the TV it's the white bars above the picture, not normally seen.
I’ve just never heard of them
Ooooo
Sansui products in the late 90's and early 2000's were made by Orion and were generally rock solid. Their power supplies were generally their weak point, Orion VCR mechanisms were practically indestructible and were often used in Toshiba/JVC products during this same time period (far superior to the also common Funai mechanisms of the time).
That smoke was all I was waiting on. Ha AH good one!!
Sorryy!!
I still have a Sony VHS bought many years ago that am using to digitise to some vhs picked up couple of years ago, also got a VHS to DVD machine that used few years ago to copy my own recorded VHS stuff
I could not understand why the Panasonic units were not working. I can understand if the units were Sony, JVC or Mitsubishi though... 😏
They all seem like easy fixes. I love the older style of that 2nd magnavox but those suck to work on
Wah wah wah
7:07 that VCR is made by Panasonic, I have a GE 9-7500 it has the same VFD and the mechanism sounds exactly the same. It's from 1987, still works good as new!
28:38. The Sansui seems shot, but it looks like it has the same osd as a Memorex vcr of mine. That makes sense, as Orion, Sansui, & Memorex occasionally made VCRs for each other in the 90s.
19:33 That multi-standard VCR is probably stuck in PAL mode.
You'll probably have to get the original remote, off of eBay, & use it to access the VCR's main menu to change that, unless the Picture Mode button, on the front, is supposed to change it.
I’m excited to try this! Monday!
How do you not have scart in the USA? Best connector tor ever for vcrs
Righttt
Scart was a strictly European thing. Disagree that it was best, dozens of pins for a gazillion of signals most of which you never need and who can easily bend and the entire connector tended to fall out. RCA makes much more sense. Luckily most VCRs sold in Europe had both.
31:59 I have that VCR (the Sanyo VWM-900), even though I don't really use it anymore.
Paradise, thanks for sharing, best regards from Brazil !
0:43 I should make a difference between stereo and mono beaches it makes me feel interesting.
man if you were in melbourne australia i would have loved to repair those broken ones, i have a panasonic 4 head /dvd combo unit that im going to digitize some tapes with, i mainly do cassette decks but i like the VCRs too
Wow, you hit the mother load! I’ve heard of Sansui, I had one of their televisions.
Clean the mode switches on the funai’s. Funai also made most Magnavox, Emerson, symphonic, Sanyo, and Sylvania tvs also vcrs.
13:47 that's what I call a hot tape
I own the Sylvania tv/vcr combo seen in this video. Does the vcr part work on yours?
19:00 it's probably black and white because it's playing PAL60 and your TV doesn't support it
I bought the go video duel vcr for a 1000 dollars in 94 it beat the macrovision copy protected that was embedded in the rental tapes
Amazing!
On the Panasonic Omnivision- Check the capacitors on the power supply board, chances are they will be leaking or will have leaked. Still a good VCR if caps replaced.
I don’t throw anything away. Can you help me source caps
the one that has reverse as eject instead, i'd buy it, seriously but nothing expensive
I’ll sell
@@EmeraldCoastDigitizing how much and where to buy?
I guess the one with the european plug like output a PAL color signal or something, that's why it was black and white perhaps. if you don't have a PAL TV, maybe try it with a capture device and see if you get color switching to PAL mode and see what happens. And maybe someone else could make us of the ones not working!
That’s a ntsc player as well
I will try the capture card but I think it’s prolly a component or I wasn’t using it right
@@EmeraldCoastDigitizing Aha yeah, saw it was compatible with NTSC too but maybe it still output PAL color information, cus I live in Sweden and I got a PAL JVC machine with NTSC support, and it shows the NTSC tapes I got in color on my PAL TV, and I know my PAL TV does NOT work with NTSC color information, cus when I hook up other stuff, like my japanese Nintendo Famicom console, it is in black and white, so I think that's kinda what's happening here, the player accepts NTSC tapes, but the color information is converted to PAL, not sure if it's possible to change it? But yeah some newer TVs accepts both PAL and NTSC color info so, but some older TVs may not (like my TV), but yeah try it with a capture device and it probably shows in color I guess! So it probably works fine! :)
When did they make the vhs dvd combo with hdmi? I found 2 of them that work perfectly.
Does the vhs part of the machine output hdmi? Maybe just the dvd player?
I thought I was crazy with my 7 or 8 VHS machines in the cellar.
You are. We are. That’s ok
Sansui been around since the 70's. My dad had a receiver from them way back when. I actually got it to work by buying a fuse for the receiver. It was an amazing experience. I did have a Sansui DVD player that filtered out curse words too!!!
The modern Sansui brand has nothing to do with Sansui audio from that era.
@@MBZ321 well gee thanks
Those Sansui ones can die pretty badly I went through 2so my uncle could finalize dvds that Pal vcr is probably fine you may need a converter box for it some won't play on NTSC tvs I have a multystem in my room and a multi system flat pannel.
Nice! I’ll try it on a more modern tv maybe?
I revived a couple early betamaxes last fall like 1976-77 early. I replaced all the belts in them (still need to replace idlers because one wont REW while another won’t FF). I enjoy playing old movies and tapes in my SL-8200 and get nostalgia for a time well over a decade before I was alive lol.
That PAL VCR is B&W, because it's PAL and there is a little chance you can switch it to NTSC. You just need a PAL TV/Display.
The tape that is playing is ntsc. And plays fine. Just black and white so it is def playing it with the ntsc option. But someone said that because it’s a pal plug… it probably does need a pal tv to play ntsc correctly. I’m gonna try it with elgato and see
@@EmeraldCoastDigitizing It converts NTSC tape to PAL on the fly, that's why you need PAL TV/Display. DVD players from region 2 do it as well. But some VCRs and DVD players can be switched to NTSC output (thus converting PAL signal to NTSC).
Btw, because that is european VCR, you can play SECAM and MESECAM tapes, too.
Hi, greetings from Argentina, sorry if my english is not so good. The only way you can see it in full color it´s if the VCR allow you to switch the VCR from PAL to NTSC (manually or automatically). An NTSC VHS in a PAL VCR will always look black and white, and a PAL VHS in an NTSC VCR will always look black and white, so the TV Display doesn´t matter. NTSC VHS only plays in full color in NTSC VCR FORMAT, and PAL VHS will always plays in full color in PAL VCR FORMAT.
I appologize again if what i say can´t be understanded, because english is not my natural language. :)
So what i mean it´s that VCR only setting is PAL format, NTSC VHS with NTSC VCR setting on an NTSC TV will always look fine. What i see there it´s an NTSC VHS in an only PAL format VCR, on an NTSC TV. So if the VCR doesn´t allow you to change format you only have a PAL VCR.
@@EmeraldCoastDigitizingI just had another look. It's apparently a model sold for the European market because it has a europlug. It'll play NTSC but might convert it to NTSC 4.43 or PAL60 which most European TVs can display, but North American TVs will only show in black&white. So chances are it's fine. There might be a setting in the menu to put it to NTSC 3.58, that'll show in colour on American TVs. Of course PAL tapes will still be output as PAL.
I have a dual deck VCR same company and it can make commercial free copies and has commercial skip
How does that even work.
@@EmeraldCoastDigitizingIIRC, the VCR records an index pulse in the control track every time it encounters a brief black screen while recording. When done recording, it rewinds while monitoring the control track. Every time it encounters an index pulse close to the last one, it also records a "skip this many indexes" signal. Then when it plays back, anytime it encounters a "skip this many indexes" signal, it fast-forwards through that many indexes, thus skipping the commercials. Now, this next part is a guess, but I assume that when dubbing to a second tape, the recording pauses while the auto-fast-forwarding is happening on the playback deck, effectively omitting the commercials entirely from the copy.
some go videos coudl copy protected movies but they don't have the VHS logo on it and it says epic hifi on it
Did not know that!
Those multi ones are very rare can fetch a big price. @@EmeraldCoastDigitizing
I sent my VCR to Lightning Fast VCR Repair. Been over a decade and it's still not fixed.
Good for you! Whoo Hoo! Esp the 8mm stuff!
Right! I’ll have to test the 8mm stuff in the next one
NEVER THROW AWAY VCRs OF ANY KIND reasons why, once these machines are gone there gone forever, they dont make them anymore.
also
-those vcrs are not broken, the servo control mode switch is dirty, super easy to fix. and a very common issue especially when vcrs sit for a long time.
-not a head issue try the tracking knob and buttons not all vcrs have auto tracking plus some vcrs have a auto head cleaner and it gums up, removal is required, easy fix
-rewind not broken, the machine is determining tape position so it can fast rewind or slow rewind. can also be a mode switch issue
-the black and white is due to the vcr set into pal and not ntsc
also beating a vcr is not going to fix it.
eating of the tapes is due to a dirty mode switch or bad belt easy to fix
mono vcrs are not crap there quite useful because most home video camcorders record in monaural audio
I WANT ALL THOSE VCRS i can fix them all.
I saw those on marketplace!
i liked the duble deck vcr
Me too haha it’s fun!
@@EmeraldCoastDigitizingdoes that play two at once?
muhahaha, you like blur crab tapes !

Sure it's not the most exciting video but it is still interesting. That darn state farm commercial couldn't be placed at a worse spot. Just as the tape was ejecting there was Smoke. Boom here comes the commercial to interrupt the moment! Bummer! 😞 Otherwise a nice video. Your operating is pretty neat too! Now when folks ask me about transfers, I tell them about you!
Gotta have ads so I can pay for my Facebook ads Hahha sorry!
that vcr has a power supply in it it just takes a sandard cord
Yeah! I just didn’t have one of those cords. Usually find them on back of smart tvs. Or a Apple TV. Can’t remember what they are called. I just didn’t have one at shop. A lot of my stuff is at home
No, you definitely not throw away VCR players
13:46 that looks like from the future movie that guy coming out of the future car but vhs tape coming out of vcr
Hot shot is so funny the vcrs knew that and saved the tape and took the life of mask instead lol😂
I would would sell the broken as parts or e-recycling over landfill
Sansui was a famous audio equipment company. The Sansui VCR was made by Funai.
The pal vcr is black and white because you need to use rca with 5 cables
That RCA deck is actually a DVD recorder as well, probably why it needs a power cord hooked up to it!
It’s got some extras! I forgot about it. I’ll pull it out again in an upcoming video.
What kind of cassette is this
Which one
Ooh/*interest perks at 23:48 the discovery of "treasure"* :D wonder what legion is,

All those cheap a$$ Funai mechanisms in those later models. I believe they were the very last company to make VCRs actually.
Ooh also keep those vfd/vacuum flouresence displays from the vcrs even if its a broken vcr for thsoe are fairky prettty imho but may even be sellable if in a set of vfds or miscellaneously on ebay.
Got cha
Just donated the broken Players to goodwill 😂
You never heard of sansui? I guess if you aren't an audio guy. They had some of the best stereo equipment of the 60's and 70's. My AU-717 is the heart of my stereo/CRT home theater setup.
Not an audio guy yet. But my next video will be using the akai reel to reel a lot

Some VCR's will not work properly with the lid off as the light sensor in them gets triggered so maybe that was the issue with some of them. Still, nice haul. Even though I will never need a VHS ever again, whenever I see them my nostalgia hits hard! I used to fix these things back in the 80's and 90's!I was surprised that you never tested out the DVD parts on the ones with DVD players/recorders as they are definitely more prone to going bad. And I think you should try and get them fixed. That maybe a lost cause. But then it's cost over profit I guess. The only other problem of course is no remotes. Most people want the remotes nowadays.
I have encountered that on some. I know what you are talking about!
I used to have that Emerson (Made by Funai of course) a higher quality JVC replaced it
Nice!
Ooh noiice that Sansui is a dvd recorder also.
Woot woot
"How are ya, sir?"
"Hawaii? Damn it, Bill. I'm supposed to be in California!"
I realize I'm way late to the video, but this just appeared in my list of suggested videos. When you scrap non-working VCRs, do you actually throw them in the trash? Or, do you bring them to a center that takes used electronics for recycling? Hopefully, it's the latter.

19:34 The TV must be PAL-N also
That’s what I’m hearing. I didn’t even think about it. It’s a pal vcr that plays ntsc.. not an ntsc player that plays pal
It also plays other regions as well
@@EmeraldCoastDigitizing You say in the video, that the VCR plays PAL-N and NTSC, that's ok, but the TV must be in PAL-N mode, if not, the video will be in black and white.
The cassette, the VCR and the TV must be all set in PAL-N mode.
@@EmeraldCoastDigitizing There were many VCRs in the PAL regions that could play NTSC tapes. But they didn't output the signal as NTSC; they output it as PAL 60Hz. That's probably why the TV locks onto the sync ok, but can't decode the color.
