Your fence is your fence build the way you see fit. If anyone has a problem with to bad they didn’t build it or pay for it so there options don’t matter. Another thing is barbed wire has been used for hundreds of years so what’s the real issue
you've obviously never saw what damage is done to a horse that runs through a barb wire fence, its horrible damage, bolting horse's can not see barb wire especially in the dark, they will plow right through it! montana horse rancher!
@@robertdavis5163 so I’ve grown up on a farm where we have 15 horses and all of our fences are barbed wire. And been that way since my great grandfather put them up. Barbed wire fence’s are tools to show a horse there boundaries and if you’re so worried about someone else property or animals then you send them a check to have it replaced. And them go to court and have barbed wire outlawed. But we all know that’s not going to happen so will just leave it at that
@robertdavis5163 horses bolt through slick wire, too. Those types are typically either hot blooded or a neurologic issue. This horse appears to be neither. Accidents happen at the very best set-ups also. I lost a 6 month old foal that was at a World Class QH facility. She was running playing and misjudged a stop and hit the pipe fence. Broke her neck and my heart.
After watching farriers for years on RUclips, I’ve learned many horses’ feet and legs get messed up by people trimming them who don’t have the knowledge, skills, or possibly correct tools. Please don’t let that happen to Beula.
Seen more horse sliced by high tensile that the electric has went out on then ever cut by barb wire. Big outfits I’ve day worked use almost exclusively Barb wire and I’ve never seen one horse injured by walking through it because it don’t happen. As soon as they know electrics not hot they will walk right through the fucking stuff and high tensile is like a razor when it’s tight.
Hi guys so happy for you all with your new horse she is beautiful I owned horses for around 40+ years and but I may I make a suggestion the horse's hoofs are so very very important to the health of your horse and I suggest that you let a professional do your horse do to you can lame your horse and run into alot of problems it is worth the extra money for a professional you can look up about the horse's hoofs on alot of sites just a suggestion and if you want to do her feet there are schools you can attend 😊 and I have a farrier out every 6to8 weeks if you're riding 😊 just my suggestion blessings
Min marker 18:03 shows steep angle on rear pastern and thats were having a farrier pays off to correct it. Also might be aggravated by novice work which does alter breaking point of the toe to help support extensor ligaments and hock joint
Ross is from a novice and all angles were corrected that day as well as the minor cracks. It will take time for her feet to be in better condition but good pasture is helping.
Frankie def needs her a hoof stand. Tht way she won’t have to try to hold Beulah’s hoof and trying to learn how to trim her. U can tell it’s been a very long time since she’s been trimmed and I really hate tht for her. I’m just happy to see tht her hooves weren’t in worse shape, not having been trimmed or anything. She’s def a calm horse and she’s absolutely beautiful Frankie. I’m sure ur gonna have many fun yrs ahead with her as she learns u and u also learn her. 🫶👍🥰
I am SO incredibly glad you will be getting rid of the barbed wire soon. I get it, money is tight. I am so glad it’s only one spot too. I can’t count how many horses I’ve seen get caught and injured. I believe this pony found a wonderful family ❤ (btw make sure you do more research on farrier work and have your neighbor help the first few times! Once her hooves get evened out make sure you only trim her hooves every month or two instead of every two weeks 😊)
No offense Cid, Mike & Frankie, for a first time working on the horses hoofs, in my opinion, a certified farrier would be my choice. I have watched a few farriers work and it was a lot different than your neighbor was doing. Just my opinion.
I get what you’re saying but there aren’t any of those folks around . Her hooves are going to take a little time to get in better condition but we will get them there.
They have hoof oil that you can get for her hooves to add moisture and protection. Also biotin will help with her hooves and coat. Helped my horse a ton when I first got her!!
@3MISSISSIPPI Keratex ! Get it! Use it! It works! I know it says it's a hardener but what it does is helps to retain moisture by sealing in natural oils. Overall a very good product. Used for my Hanoverian my and my Friesian is now on it too. One is barefoot and one isn't.
❤ Great job Frankie. When you get new tools for the care they will be sharp and easier to use. I have always put a little oil on my tools so they don't rush and get dull.
Not seen hooves trimmed like this before, usually it's easier if you put the leg between your legs as it's more steady, I'd say a farrier isnt just trained in trimming hooves and fitting shoes but has knowledge to recognize problems that may arise such as thrush and infections, I just think it's worth having someone who's trained to know the hoof inside out, the last thing you'd want is any damage coming to the hooves as without healthy feet you've just got an expensive ornament,
Please flatten the ends of the twisted wire. After raising horses for 30 years, trust me when I say they will find anything pokey. They will take out an eye or gouge themselves. They are a fright and flight animal so good idea to tie flags on all the wire. As far as feet, have a pro do a good trim.
Good advice. That's something I always do too. The flag advice was very good, whoever suggested that. It's scary how many ways a horse can hurt themselves. I always am thinking "Now how could my horse hurt themselves." And please new horse owners... learn about signs of colic & how to take vital signs, plus make yourselves a simple first aid kit & put your vet number in your phone. Hate to be a downer, but it's just what happens with horses. Good neighbor knowing about horses is a blessing.
There's some excellent books out the Mark Rashid has written some fantastic books that are easy to read as well as informative and entertaining. I didn't grow up on a farm. I had a horse for a few years and have been riding horses since I was five. I'm sorry you didn't know about the barbed wire. I know money doesn't grow on trees. Horses can hurt themselves on any fence. A huge vet bill is also expensive, probably more expensive than replacing the fence. Go an have a chat to your local horse rescue place, they will give you the best information.
We do our horses hooves every 6 weeks, my boy is barefoot as well. Get her some hoof conditioner to put on her hooves, will keep some moisture in her hoof. I dont usually say anything on comments, theres enough people out there that like to tell you how it is! Haha
Great idea. It's a good medium because there's a line of thought that horses should be introduced to barbed wire when they're not panicked so they have respect for it when they are.
thank you for clearing the air with the barbwire know that none of us are trying to be rude or control how you run your farm we just want the best life for your horse because we have went threw that with our own and don't want yall to have to we all learn from our own experiences
Frankie is in the perfect position for the hind legs. If the horse decided to kick, Frankie would be pushed away. Also the closer you are to the horse, the kick doesn't have enough momentum to give hard kick and it would be lower. If she's further away the kick will be harder and higher. Frankie is doing great with her horsemanship. Frankie is very smart.
Much respect to those who chose to share their concerns referencing the b-wire, in addition to your candor to capture your follow-up actions of safety on the matter (As THE GREATEST Pirate of our generation [Jimmy Buffett] would say, “Ladies choice, everybody dance”). Oh how it does not take too much for one to truly appreciate the Hospitality which the South is known for, as there are regions in this country which could benefit from just a little kindness, like a neighbor coming over to offer their knowledge and skills for a unique skill set which you were willing to outsource & fund. 🍻🇺🇸🙏🏼🇺🇸🍻

always going to get know-alls buddy so ignore them and don't let them get to you. Doing a great job Frankie learning new things about caring for your horse. Great neighbor passing on his skills saving money and sharing his knowledge ... keep up with the great vids guys
Great video! Enjoyed the neighbor instructions for Beulah’s hoofs. I think Frankie will catch on quickly. Thanks Mike for explaining about the barbed wire section. I didn’t even realize all the fencing except that small area wasn’t barbed wire. You’re right tho, “ money doesn’t grow on trees!”
She has been alone most of her life . She shares a fence with goats and LGD’s. Upon an introduction to another horse she got spooked. She may just need more time to adjust. Perhaps at some point that might be something we look into in the future but for now we’re just letting her settle in her new home.
If you plan on doing this yourself, you could buy a stand, that you place your horses hooves on, so you don’t have to hold the leg when you file the hoof.
No, that’s not necessary. First off , there isn’t one in our area . Ross has decades of experience and used to work the horses in our town with his grandfather. He is a professional.
I was born and raised on a farm and horses were part of it. I also managed a ranch with over 100 horses both places had barbed wire on them. People don't give animals enough credit they are smarter than you think they understand or learn what will cause them pain and unless driven into it they will avoid it. GOD BLESS from your Canadian friend
Yep they learn from experience had a yearling that got a bit of cut from barbed wire she avoided the fence after that we had her for twenty one years and one time was all it took small injury and off course we treated it and got vet visit bit she was fine and smart enough to understand leave fence alone and not dart through it
Get it done Frankie! You got this young woman! Give all the guys around there something else to worry about! You can dig a hole for them and they could have their nails done before going into the hole! 😂😂 ❤❤
Great job Frankie, you're learning to take care of your horse's nerds very well. The only suggestion I'd make is tie your hair up or do some tight braids to keep your hair out of your face.
A suggestion, order you a radius rasp. It has a curved edge to round off the edges of her hooves. It helps to neaten them up and prevent chipping. Also the hoof knives you buy are NOT pre sharpened. They really need to be sharpened before use, this makes them much easier to use, it does however make it easier to cut yourself so just be cautious. You can buy beginner hoof sets at Tractor Supply to get started. Best of luck
You’re not far from me.(Webster County) I have enjoyed your videos and especially seeing how happy everyone is. Welcome to Mississippi. If you need anything, just let me know.
Mani Pedi Spa Day every two weeks 😉😊😎 Beulah's hooves look better than what I thought, no major issues, and she already looks like her gait is better. Use what ya got and good add Mike.
Just a heads up. I have owned and trained horses for over 20 years. It is very easy to mess up horses hooves and legs accidentally with unbalanced trimming. Even if you have to haul her i would get a farrier. You can save money on future vet bills and avoid lameness. Just a suggestion. They make a great pair.🙂
Great lesson to learn how to trim! And your fence is just fine. Horses can bolt and run into and through ANY type of fencing. In my experience, slick wire is actually more dangerous than barbed as it doesn't provide a correction and they will not respect it. I wouldn't tie up to any kind of wire fencing, especially if you are utilizing the time outs, which are also a great training method when done in a safe environment. You guys will learn so much as you go and looking like you already have a great foundation, knowledgeable friends, and neighbors.
Exactly, that correction goes right out the window the minute lighting takes out your box in the middle of the night and you wake up to a horse that’s hung up in high tensile.
Keep up the good work! ..Looking for a recipe to make Elderberry wine... Always wanted a horse.. trying to get on one and fell off the other side about Frankie's age!! That was 60 years ago! Lord have mercy!
Great mani and pedi. What a good horse. She will be fine now. You will keep up with her hooves now. Great video I have never seen this done. Thank you for sharing. Take care✌️🥰🇺🇸
Great video guys. We had a bad experience with barbed wire. I had a horse that coliced. We were trying to get him to stand up and he stumbled and fell through the barbed wire. It cut the main aurtery in his leg and he bled to death in about 2 minutes. The cut was high up his leg where it meets his flank and i couldnt get a tourniquet on it. Just a freak accident.
Your neighbor just showed Frankie a great knot! I always had to put the horses leg between mine I don't have the strength in my hands to use the nippers 1 handed. With a toe crack like that I would take a extra nip to help it grow out. What size cinch does Frankie need?
Agree on the importance of safety release ties. My barefoot trimmers always use 2 hands, plus there are hoof stands one can use to hold hoof up. They also request we soak the hooves ahead when been very dry, as hooves can get rock hard. -- Now need to learn about thrush & so many other things. It's a real learning journey underway in Mississippi now. -- I would rack back of my thumbs with the rasp too much, so started wearing leather gloves.
@@MegF142857 It's called a hoof jack. Very handy and Beulah would probably get used to it pretty quick as laid back as she is. They are expensive anymore though. Good suggestion. They're not new to livestock. They also have a ton of resources at their fingertips and are meeting people that know how to handle horses. I mean, they took her to the Vet before they even brought her home. That right there should tell everyone they only have the best of intentions. Tips are great. I'm sure they appreciate any as long as they're done with good intentions. Such as yours. I'm glad to watch the journey 😀
In our country it’s not allowed to put barbed wire for horses ! Old barbed wire for cattle (cows)can be kept but we can’t put new fences with that. They did not sell it anymore in all country and that a good thing because I have see a cow that go through and that was not really easy to see…
I've had horses for over 50 years. I would call a farrier for your horse's trims. It takes one bad trim to mess up your horses' feet. I'm not saying a farrier can't do the same thing, as I've had that problem a time or two in 50 years. Find a good reputable farrier with lots of good references and keep him. My farrier for the last 20 years just retired this year. He recommended a new farrier, and he is very good as well. They take the whole horse into consideration when trimming or shoeing. Good luck with your horse. My daughter is an adult now and my 11 year old granddaughter has the horse bug. She has a small pony that is a been there done that, and she competes her in English hunters. She has a large pony that she uses for fun and trail rides western. Now she has started taking Driving Lessons and has her first combined driving show next week. She takes English, Western, and Driving Lessons each week. I liked your comment about boys. My daughters were too busy when they were young and found really good husbands. I wish Frankie all the best with Beulah.
Thank you 🙏. Ross worked for years with his grandfather doing farrier work in town . We are a rural community and don’t have any farriers here now. I trust Ross to do a great job and teach us correctly. Thank you 😊
Just started watching your videos I think you guys are doing a great job and I’m sure the fence will be fine keep up the good job have a great weekend and god bless
❤ We ALWAYS used barbed wire to keep our horses in the fences. No issues with the barbed wire except for us humans building the fences and trying to cross them ourselves. No horses were harmed but we were from time to time.
Brava Frenki learn everything immediately congratulations, you are a very good girl beautiful and intelligent your parents must be proud of you good kiss, from Marilena Rome Italy, 💋💋💋🐎🐎🐎🐎🐎🐎🐎🐴🐴🦄🦄🦄
Farriers aren’t that expensive. Horses should get trimmed every 4-6 weeks in spring and summer and 6-10 weeks in fall and winter. Trimming to frequently can cause issues and undo soreness. A farrier cost to trim a barefoot horse is usually around $65-$75. I would get a farrier to try to fix the cracks in your horses hooves first then if you want to do the upkeep then go from there.
We also did barefoot trim ourselves with our horses. My Dad got us 3 horses when I was a teenager (13 yo). He was raised with horses (farmer) & knew how. I trimmed mine for years when younger. Make sure you are up to date on your tetanus shots, as you WILL end up raking your thumbs with the rasp or something in the process eventually. I'm sure you'll get lots of advice. Now I have a professional barefoot trimmer, but then I'm over 50 years older than a teenager. Honestly, I should have used a professional a long time sooner. Cost is $60 a horse now & barefoot trimmer certified by Pete Ramey. Worth it, particularly since horses have arthritis and other issues. Dogs love the hoof trim bits, btw. - Be careful though on trying to do too much to cut corners on expenses. Is it worth it? Can you really do this yourself? Good luck! You are going to need 2 hands to cut with those nippers. Can soak the hoof ahead of time to make softer. You have a lot of learning ahead. Excellent that you are doing safety release rope tying! And about rope handling when leading. What a nice quiet horse. Looks like a perfect horse so far for a teen. My parents got me a crazy mare with an untouched filly as my first horses. I learned a lot, but just lucky that I didn't get hurt as I learned.
She’s been alone for most of her life, and we’ve just totally flipped her world upside down. While I’m sure she’s going to be very happy here, baby steps.
I can only make a suggestion being from Central Queensland Australia 🇦🇺??? Never had a problem with barbed wire in my horse paddocks… Slip wire as you call it (plain wire here in Oz) will cut a horse worse nd cause more injury than barbed wire does…
Nothing wrong with either.. My property experience, Our night paddocks were only a couple hundred acres, horse paddock (?) maybe a couple thousand acres…??? That was seperate from the grazing/beef operations
Your fence is your fence build the way you see fit. If anyone has a problem with to bad they didn’t build it or pay for it so there options don’t matter. Another thing is barbed wire has been used for hundreds of years so what’s the real issue

People don't give animals enough credit they are smarter than you think they understand or learn what will cause them pain and unless driven into it they will avoid it. GOD BLESS from your Canadian friend
Thank you 🙏 I 💯 agree 👍

Thank you so much for the tips ! I’ll take a look at those 😀
@@3MISSISSIPPI you are so very welcome. Welcome to the South 😉
Nice job doing your own horseshoeing
You’re not far from me.(Webster County) I have enjoyed your videos and especially seeing how happy everyone is. Welcome to Mississippi. If you need anything, just let me know.
Thank you so much 😊
great neighbors are invaluable, love your property, you guys have done really good!
Yes they are!
Hello 👋 good show , have a good day, bye.
Ross used to do farrier work in town and I trust him completely. He knows what he’s doing . He just happens to live down the road . 😀thank you
Great lesson to learn how to trim!
When you fall off you gotta get back on .
My sister in law used old garden hose this she spilt and over the wire .
Great mani and pedi. What a good horse. She will be fine now. You will keep up with her hooves now. Great video I have never seen this done. Thank you for sharing. Take care✌️🥰🇺🇸
Thank you 🙏
you guys are doing an awesome job with frsnkie great worker and getting good on the tractor!
Mani & Pedi for Beulah. She will take a Sparkle Blue paint. Good Neigbor.😊😊
Hello 3 mississippi hope ur all well am frinkie loving the horse
If you go to a wooden type fence use can buy a vinyl fence post and cross braces that will never rot. They come in white or wood looking.
Frankie ur doing a fine job.keep up the good work.all of u.
You shouldn’t have to explain your fencing. I can’t believe some people. Love you guys and you would never harm your animals. 🏈🥰🏈
Your neighbor just showed Frankie a great knot!
I always had to put the horses leg between mine
I don't have the strength in my hands to use the nippers 1 handed.
With a toe crack like that I would take a extra nip to help it grow out.
What size cinch does Frankie need?
I’ll ask her . Her and Jen checked but that info didn’t trickle down to me 😂
Agree on the importance of safety release ties.
@OurOkieHomestead thank you Marie ❤️
What a nice gentleman! Love that he is teaching Frankie to care for her horse!
We are blessed with wonderful neighbors!

Thank you 😊
Might be easier to use a farrier stand. When we had horses we used barb wire and had no problem at all. The horses had no cut or scrapes at all.
Interesting video!! 👍👍❤️❤️🇨🇦
I love your explanation about your fence ! You do for the best that’s nice and the little flags for visibility are 👍
Thank you 🙏
Use what you have You're trying to protect your horse
Cool!!!😊🎉❤
❤❤❤ Another GREAT VIDEO I love watching your videos, syd, mike, and frankie

My daughter is a vegetarian but she lives in Chicago she took her clinical in East Texas.
Wow this was an awesome video, I learned something 😁👍... I bet Beulah's feet feel better now 👊❤❤
I think she is strutting better now 😀
Good morning Mike, Syd, & Frankie

Great job Frankie. Earning that trust with Buhla 💕
Just started watching your videos I think you guys are doing a great job and I’m sure the fence will be fine keep up the good job have a great weekend and god bless
Thank you 🙏
❤ We ALWAYS used barbed wire to keep our horses in the fences. No issues with the barbed wire except for us humans building the fences and trying to cross them ourselves.
No horses were harmed but we were from time to time.
Love u guys
Brava Frenki learn everything immediately congratulations, you are a very good girl beautiful and intelligent your parents must be proud of you good kiss, from Marilena Rome Italy, 💋💋💋🐎🐎🐎🐎🐎🐎🐎🐴🐴🦄🦄🦄
Love the channel and Cid is my favorite women ..All around bad a..
Ha ha thank you 🙏
Farriers aren’t that expensive.
Totally agree!!!
Agree.
Yup
Good tips ! Oh yes, always keep up-to-date on our tetanus. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve stepped on a rusty nail in the last decade lol.
And what is money made of? Paper! And where does paper come from? trees ! So truthfully money does grow on trees LOL have fun with that one hahaha
Fact, the dollar bills are made from a special paper that is 75% cotton and 25% linen, sorry, but the man was correct, money doesn’t grow on trees.😊
DD5 sent me over ❤
Thank you 🙏 for checking us out
buela needs a friend, a horse friend
She’s been alone for most of her life, and we’ve just totally flipped her world upside down. While I’m sure she’s going to be very happy here, baby steps.
I can only make a suggestion being from Central Queensland Australia 🇦🇺???
Never had a problem with barbed wire in my horse paddocks…
Slip wire as you call it (plain wire here in Oz) will cut a horse worse nd cause more injury than barbed wire does…
Both are very common down here for horses kept on large amount of acres.
Nothing wrong with either..
My property experience, Our night paddocks were only a couple hundred acres, horse paddock (?) maybe a couple thousand acres…???
That was seperate from the grazing/beef operations
Cattle fence is fine for that horse may limit in future ability to have younger stock...
Awesome 🖐😎👍
