Some musicologists have debated recently whether it is in fact this symphony, rather than the long held view that it was the c minor (VB 142), that was the one dedicated to and performed by Haydn at Eszterhaza when Kraus paid him a visit there in October 1783. Haydn called Kraus a ‘genius’, and praised the symphony written especially for him as a ‘...masterpiece...for all time’. But which one? I think it is the c minor (VB 142).
@ Elaine Blackhurst Today, the history of music is "turned upside down" and does not correspond to the real facts; it is seen from the angle of Mozart and Haydn as if they were musical icons at the time (for contemporaries). For example, in Vienna at that time lived one of the musical icons who lived independently with the help of aristocrats, he lived in the elite part of the city, from the sale of his notes - Wanhal. Favored composer of Empress Marie Therese - Wranitzky. The purpose of Leopold Mozart's trip to London in 1764 was to present his gifted children at court and private concerts and to "reap" financial benefits. L. Mozart: "Over the next few months, I will have to make every effort to conquer the aristocracy, and this will require a lot of galloping and hard work. But if I achieve the goal I set for myself, I will catch a fine fish or, better said, a good catch of guinea. "To increase his earnings, he used the guest appearance of the famous castrate Manzoli - in Handel's operas:" Ezio "," Berenice "; "- so Leopold's children performed after private castrato concerts in the houses of aristocrats and merchants.
He deserved the title of Swedish Mozart .He was german but worked for Swedish court: a bit defilated country , that's the reason why Kraus has been forgotten so long? Listen to his violin concerto: outstanding! perhaps the best violin concerto written in early decades of XVIII century along with those of Mozart that however go back to 1773 and are early masterpieces (inspired by Myslivececk); Mozart was seventeen in that time and unfortunately didn't write violin concerts in eighties. Haydn himself never wrote notable concerts for violin in his mature age, only Viotti could be compared to Kraus but Viotti was an excellent player and his concerts are bound to show his ability: Kraus as demonstrated by this work knew how to write carefully for the orchestra, a true symphonist! Haydn wasn't mistaken!
no Swedish Mozart, that will diminish his significance, he was a very original composer, he really was 'himself" (and his music is completely alien to Mozart's music). But I understand what you want to express..and that's a great compliment for Krauss.
@@pietstamitz1 I agree with you Kraus had his own personality and if anything he drew models and inspiration from Haydn. The title of Swedish Mozart was used later with the purpose of pointing at him as the most outstanding swedish ( notwithstanding his german origin ) composer of the time. In addition he was born the same year and died ,too young unfortunately ,one year after Mozart. I love his music. I suggest also his chamber music notably the Wiener quintet. Musicologists don't agree on the entitlermnt of some compositions and some of them are lost
