If you get into fanfiction you find that the majority of writers avoid changing the timeline at all costs because they don't know how to deal with the butterfly effect, which ends up with whatever changes they make no matter how huge they should be not having almost /any/ effect at all on the course of events. It's basically only stories like this where they don't take it seriously or can imagine alternative ways for things to happen where they actually are willing to butterfly things and derail the plotline..
