What Makes Tommy Miller The Perfect Side Character

- When people think of The Last of Us characters, obviously Joel and Ellie are first to come to mind. Though one thing The Last of Us did better than most games produced, was the emphasis on it's side characters. None more important than Tommy Miller. The Last of Us story line literally wouldn't have happened without him. This is how The Last of Us created the perfect side character with Tommy.

Kenny from The Walking Dead Video games were always one of my favourite side characters in all of video games.
Would love a break down of those games 😉
This is a great idea. Kenny is an awesome character too!
I love the Kenny and Clementine easter egg in TLOU2.
My fav was Luke haha
Tommy may be the perfect side character but Ish is the best character in The Last of Us. The guy showed up after months away at sea, discovered the fall, built a shelter, grabbed some fedra gear, took people in without going govner, he protected them himself for years until the day someone left the door open and the shelter had its one bad day. Ish gets shit done and if Ish survived in the show timeline I hope he is played by Troy Baker.
Troy already plays a show character, David's right hand if I'm not mistaken. And Ish MAY have survived in game as well, though: in Factions there's some grafitti saying "Ish was here, wish someone else was too." Don't know if that's canon though...
I hope we get to play as Tommy in TLOU Part III
You... haven't played Part 2, have you?
Oof
@@PlebNCit could be a flashback scene or years later lol c’mon guy
@@mr.mcmoney If you played Part 2 you'd know why "years later" wouldn't work. A prequel, maybe but I don't think that's a fruitful setting. We already know Tommy and Joel did some cold blooded murder and banditry already so there'd be no revelations or surprises to gleam from it.
Personally my money is on either playing as Ellie again with her trying to rebuild her life again, Dina trying to raise her family, Dina's kid growing up in Jackson or Abby trying to rebuild the Fireflies so they continue researching a cure.
@@PlebNC I played Part 2, I still think it'll be a laugh playing with Tommy lol, maybe some sniper sections, and him adjusting to his new "situation." Just sections though, not an entire game.
Very good video. Subscribed!
Tommy was a beast in Part 2.
Crazy coincidence, I just finished watching TLoU2 for the first time just a few hours ago. I wished Tommy didn't go to Ellie at the end of the game but I hear you how he drives the story. Tommy was so broken physically and mentally, Ellie was his only choice for his quest for revenge.
The scene where Dina tried to convince Ellie to stay right before she leaves in the middle of the night was so heartbreaking. Honestly, i don't remember any game getting me so emotional like tlou2
A fellow Tommy enjoyer, my personal favourite character from Last of us
Tommy is a great character! One of my favorites
In the games it was Ellie bc I was the same age as her so her character resonated more with me in the tv show it’s Joel
I hope naughty dog make a last of us prequel where you play as Tommy alongside tess and Joel about what they did leading up to last of us part 1 I think that would be amazing
LMAO in your dreams, Naughty Dog is too woke and out of touch with their fanbase to ever do something like that.

It’s nice to see Tommy Miller finally getting some love and being in the spotlight but let’s just get one thing right here. TM could absolutely be the main character in The Last Of Us. He is the furthest thing from just a side character. After all just like Peter Parker was inadvertently responsible for the death of his Uncle Ben. Tommy Miller actions led to the death of his loving and adorable niece Sarah Miller. Which was his brother Joel Millers daughter.
We see that 20 years later, Joel still has flashbacks and haunting dreams of the most terrible day of his life. And I wouldn’t be surprised if his brother Tommy still is traumatized by the part he played in all of that.
I’ve been playing around with outlining a Last of Us Prequel video game titled. The Last of Us: A Bard’s Tale. And in it Tommy gets to finally become a POV Character. Loosing his niece. Surviving & Thriving in the Post Apocalyptic World. Joining the Firefies. Falling in love with Marlene. Joining the Community of Jackson. Marrying Maria. He’s done a lot in the last 20 years worth delving into further.
Never forget bruh. We’re all side characters in someone else’s story and main characters in our own stories.
Tommy Miller is grossly disrespected in TLOUP2. He should have been upgraded to a main character considering it’s his own loving brother that was brutally murdered right in front of him! And again he was partially responsible for this happening.
But Naughty Dog acts like Ellie who has only known Joel for 5 years is more affected by his loss than his own brother whose been to hell and back with him for over 40 years!
And I’ll tell ya something else. The final scene with Joel & Marlene is nowhere near as good as it could’ve been with Tommy & Marlene in that scene together.
Tommy & Marlene have a lot of history together. Mixed feelings about each other together. That would have made it a much more intense, anxiety rich experience for us all.
Seeing Tommy decide if he was gonna kill his ex lover to save Ellie or not, could have been much more impactful than what we got with Joel in that moment.
@@endershepard7117 Jesus people have zero media literacy
@@endershepard7117 I'm not necessarily on the TLOU2 hate bandwagon but I think it's definitely inferior to Part 1. I think you bring up something interesting though. Part 2 could have been so much better if it'd just be Tommy and Ellie hunting down Abby and her crew, maybe getting captured by Scars in the process and striking up some sort of an uneasy alliance with them against the WLF.
That would make more sense to me than just two people butchering their way through a literally army numbering in the thousands. And it would shine a "less forced/more organic" light on Scar culture and values and how heavily it contrasts against Tommy and Ellie. Sometimes simple is just better.
Finally a channel who gets it. Tommy Is a great character and had the second game been written better, Tommy might have done more
I love Tommy
Tommy the GOAT ,he is probably my favourite alongside Ellie and Joel
Hmm. Weird but ok lol. I can think of so many different other topics to make a video on but I guess
Tommy is my favorite character

By being everything the show version isn't, done
Much like his brother, Tommy is not a good person. He's a better person than Joel by most standards, but in some ways he is just as if not worse than Joel. Simply because he couldn't let his brother's death go, he emotionally manipulated his broken niece into giving up the first semblance of happiness she had in years so he could get closure. Joel might've damned the human race to eternal suffering, but he did it himself.
Ellie probably would've gone anyway. How long would she live with that PTSD? With or without Tommy she would've done the whole hunt Abby thing again and let her live after conveniently getting a well timed Joel flashback.
@@LisaRowePunker Tommy was considered quite angelic by most people. One outburst at the end of the game and it got people thinking he's an asshole now. 😒
Yeah, he was a little out of line. But did that frustration drop out of the freaking sky or was there a real good reason for it?
Tommy is another victim of the Character Assassination of Prt 2.
Also, in 0:43, I think it’s wrong to put “2013” besides that cash grab.
So yeah, Druckmann successfully got his “controversial story” by dividing the fanbase.
Yes, Tommy was an amazing side character. He was one of the few likable characters left alive in the dogshit sequel, and they shat all over him just like they did his brother. What a waste.
They should've made Tommy playable but no we had to play as the Surgeon's daughter from the first game. 🤦🏻♂️
Out of all the crappy things in last of us, part two like the story being garbage, Tommy is definitely the MVP of the game and watching him blow. Manny’s face off with a shotgun was so satisfying.
Hmmm yes. I laughed out loud at that one. Though I didn't think the story was straight garbage, just significantly inferior to the first one. Just couldn't connect with Abby or forgive her and her crew, not to mention the endless "sidequest" of Lev and Yara. Her voice actress did a good job though, ngl. Still a great game, I think. Had fun playing it and that's what matters to me personally. Though I don't fault others for not enjoying/hating it
It really irks me that you used the name and game cover of the remake of the first game and not the original release.
I prefer to ignore LoTu2. At least Abby and the pointless ending, where Ellie refuses to just end her.
Too bad last of us 2s story was so bad.
Played it twice. I'm good. It wasnt well written. And it was a sexist pandering mess
I was halfway into my second playthrough when I realized the little Asian boy was actually a wretched little girl whose cosplay got her mother and sister killed
Tommy’s a cool character, I especially like how in part 2 he emotionally manipulated a girl who’s essentially his niece to throw way her life & family to become a contract killer & when she says she can’t he basically ostracizes her from his family, what a guy, 😂
They killed his character in the end of last of us part 2, they betrayed his character just to give us a twist
Hate to be that guy, but... damn, it is such a shame that this franchise was so ruined simply for political clout.
And no matter what you say, deep down, you know the only reason why they butchered TLOU2's story was to pander to their non-audience, makd a "girl-power" fantasy and spit in the face of the people who they knew would get pissed off by their choices.
Everyone and their mother expected Joel to die in the second game, but the way in which this was handled was simply pathetic.
It is sad indeed, to think that we only had one shot at TLOU2 and it went all down the toilet just so a few snobs could feel all high and mighty while they called everyone else a bigot just for stating how obviously they fucked up the story. The first game had such a great story and loveable characters due to Naughty Dog's previous script writer. Then, Druckmann came along and couldn't even manage to keep Ellie likeable.
the point was to make you feel like you didn’t want to be doing what you were doing.
thats why they included a fight of both as abby against Ellie and Ellie against abby, so that both sides of the game would feel like you didn’t want to be doing this.
Like the first game when you want to save Ellie but don’t necessarily want to kill the fireflies, but are forced to watch it unfold.
Story is still shit though
@@ryanc537 if that was the point, they sure as shit hit the jackpot. So much focus in making people feel like "they didn't want to do it", that many of them, myself included, ended up not wanting to play the game at all lol.
The last of us 2 was the game version of the walking dead, no one is safe from the chopping block, i fully expect to see ellie die if we get a part 3.
Only thing I can think Tommy does is walk Joel into a trap and call him by his name like a moron
Tommy unfortunately played a part in the death of Sarah but he also gave Joel a new daughter named Ellie. Because if it was not for Tommy vouching for his older brother Joel and being romantically involved with Marlene. Joel would have never even met Ellie.
Tommy is a douche, he knew Ellie was having ptsd and and almost lost her life. Yet mocked her and claimed she promised to her
@@ryanc537 there’s not a person on this planet who likes Ellie 19 yo more than Ellie 14 yo. Ellie in TLOUP2 is selfish, brutal, arrogant, delusional and undedicated. She cared more about punishing Abby than saving Tommy. And you’re very quick to forget that Tommy literally took a bullet to the head to save Ellie!
Ellie & Abby are basically the same awful person. Both of them have no qualms about killing the very person that saved their lives and wasn’t trying to harm them at all. Abby kills Joel who saved her life and Ellie kills Owen who saved her life.
I don't get people's insistence that they should have used fake names, or perhaps even no names at all - At no point in either game is it ever established that Joel, nor anyone else, engages in the practice of fake names - A practice I personally associate more with spy movies, if anything. Hell, when you first start 20 years later with Joel, not only does Tess know his name, but pretty much every interaction on the street outside involves an NPC who is very familiar with Joel and his name. The enemies in Boston know his name, Marlene knows his name. There's not a single time where it's established that using fake names can be a tactic for survival. Joel has no issue with Bill knowing his name, Henry and Sam knowing his name, the rest of the Jackson crew knowing his name. Everyone and their mother knew his name! xD Why would Joel and Tommy then use fake names towards someone who they didn't perceive as a threat in the moment? It's never been done before in the series so why then?
Abby learning their names then and there wasn't even that much of a factor. If she didn't learn of their names, she was still planning on taking them hostage for information, that's the whole reason she even went there.
Man, you really stretching that Tommy’s importance. Don’t get me wrong, everything you said about the first game, absolutely correct. But anything about the second game, absolutely not. Tommy’s character is butchered in the second game, and everything about tommy happens off screen. That is not good story telling. That’s like having a movie about John wick but only the perspective of Jimmy the cop. He’s only there for the after math and no indication of what happened. You can’t just explain away things that happen off screen. Another example is Star Wars and how palpatine is just alive with no explanation, except “dark side is a path to many abilities that some consider to be unnatural”. It’s a cop out. A literal plot device is not good story telling by itself, and the story around the last of us part 2 does not help support tommy.
L merchant
Explain what things away off screen? That Tommy changed after his older brother died and wanted to go off to avenge him without bringing Ellie into it as collateral? It’s a valid criticism to say that “they should’ve had a scene which shows Tommy going out on his own and his turmoil”, but the writers of the game gave you enough to infer what Tommy is feeling and what he’s going through. You see through the aftermath that he’s leaving behind that he’s a changed person as he tortures people for answers, which he despised himself and Joel for doing when they were surviving together. I think a family member getting murdered would change any characters core beliefs, it certainly happened to Joel.
Yet another classic example of someone that dislikes Part II having zero media literacy and not understanding the game. Gg!
Tommy would have been a much better protagonist in TLOUP2 than Ellie or Abbie. Because Ellie’s story is weak. Al she is is very upset that she didn’t get to rebuild her relationship with Joel to her full satisfaction before his untimely demise but we see from her last memory of Joel before his death that they already did kiss and make up.
But Tommy Miller on the other hand has to now live with the fact that he is the last living member of his family line. He loss his niece and now his brother and he doesn’t have any kids of his own.
Now all he has is ghost of the past loved ones loss haunting him and maybe even compelling him to considering joining them all very soon.
Just imagine how good TLOUP2 could have been if it was about Tommy Miller fighting a pull to self-annihilation. That’s something a lot of people could actually relate too but could any of us really relate to Ellie or Abby?
Not so much.
@@TheOldYoungOne the writers of TLOUP2 had a sexist female protagonist agenda to focus on female characters (Lev included) at the expense of every good male character.
I don’t think that I’m the only one who was very disappointed that we didn’t even meet Bill again.
And Lev can cut her hair and Cosplay all she wants to but she is biologically female and did anyone else notice how in spite of how much Lev tries to live as a boy she still moves like a girl and accepts Abby putting her coat on her when she’s cold just like a man normally does in a chilvarous way for a woman?
Naughty Dog decided to focus on some random new transgender character in the post apocalypse because that’s what audiences were asking for. Well not really.
Instead of a man who was here at the beginning. Is well liked and has very strong narrative threads that could be utilized by the name of Tommy Miller.
