    Alex explaining the lyrics to Andy at the end was priceless! Also, yeah that is some grade A “deep in the sauce” to block out the lyrics to this one. They add so much to the sauce, though. Let this be a lesson, Young Andrew.

      Andy really cracked me up when he finally got the story.😂😂😂 It's what makes this song so great. The lyrics and vocals of the music paints a great picture of a real life situation that some have actually found themselves in. You hear it and feel it, and can imagine yourself being there seeing it unfold.

      I also enjoyed that part of video immensely. In Andy's defense, I often listen to new songs in the same way, i.e., I don't always pay attention to the lyrics first, but intake the vocals as part of the entire sound design. After that, I start to appreciate the lyrics, drum fills, guitar riffs and other components that make a song memorable.

    According to Skynyrd: "This song is based on a true story. As Skynyrd guitarist Gary Rossington tells it, lead singer Ronnie Van Zant, who was about 18 at the time, used a fake ID to get in a bar while his younger bandmates Rossington and Allen Collins waited for him in a truck. Van Zant danced with a girl named Linda, whose boyfriend, who was not too happy about it, came up to Ronnie and reached for something in his boot. Figuring he was going for a gun, Van Zant told him: "If you're going to shoot me it's going to be in the ass or the elbows... just gimme a few steps and I'll be gone." He ran to the truck, and he, Rossington, and Collins wrote this song that night."

    Great song, but you’ve got to hear “Call Me The Breeze” which is one of their greatest hits and written by the infamous JJ Cale, which has a great solo by Gary Rossington and an unforgettable piano sole by the late Billy Powell!
    On another note you mentioned similarities of Joe Walsh, which I highly recommend a mid-80’s song he wrote (while dating Stevie Nicks) called “The Confessor”! An incredible song full of meaning in a time of a transition in his life and includes a powerful guitar solo which seems to release some anger he has built up inside (my two cents). If it doesn’t make RUclips, you owe it to yourselves to listen to it on your own!

    Just for a good, down and dirty one that I haven't seen suggested, "Gimme Back My Bullets" is a cool, dyed-in-the-wool southern rock banger. I'll also put in my vote for "Tuesday's Gone", probably my favorite LS song, it's definitely their style in a ballad, but somehow, elevated.

  • @telebender
    @telebender 2 года назад +9

    "On The Hunt", "The Ballad of Curtis Loew", and their cover of JJ Cale's "Call Me The Breeze" get my votes, though I'd say stick with JJ if you review that tune...In fact, JJ Cale is a "laid back" rabbit hole you need to check out, but do a deeper dive past all the tunes others (such as Clapton) have popularized. I recommend "I Got The Same Old Blues", "If You're Ever In Oklahoma", "Devil In Disguise", "Downtown LA", or "Thirteen Days".

    So I am glad you all went back to Skynyrd. What you experienced was the difference in the band after Steve Gaines joined. They all said they were getting stagnant and needed something new. Along came Steve Gaines. If you want to enjoy more of his influence I would suggest 'You got that Right' where Ronny and Steve share vocals or 'I know a Little' which Ronnie and Steve changed from the original that Steve did with his band Crawdad.

    My favorite part is when he says "Excuse me!" Perfect thing to say at a moment like that. Don't know if anyone else suggested it, but a good follow-up might be "Saturday Night Special," since it also involves a gun but is a more serious gun control song from 1974.

    Not even close for me, Simple Man has the best sound and great leads that are not as manic as Free Bird but for 9 out of 10 times when I get an itch for just one of their songs, it is Simple Man. That was the best song when I saw them live, Free Bird is often an exercise in excess, though still a great song.

    One of my favorite slash most frustrating things to do is to watch Alex’s face as he reacts to lyrics and looks over at Andy for a reaction, and Andy has completely missed it. 😂 I personally think lyrics are a huge piece of what makes a great song great, and can’t imagine not hearing them, but I think it’s a case of engineer brain vs writer brain.

    I read or saw an interview with members of the band. They said in Jacksonville Fla, Ronnie Van Sant was dancing with some guys girls. The guy reached down to his boot and Ronnie thought he was reaching for a gun, so he told the guy, "if you're going to shoot me, it's going to be in the back or the elbow" ,something along that. He and his other band mates ran out and they wrote the song that night.
