Don't mind rude people in comments :) Yes, it was allowed for women to fight in WWII in Soviet Union, many women in Soviet Union went to the war - many were hospital nurses (and they pulled soldiers to safe places from battle fields, sometimes even under fire), radio operators. Those who stayed home, worked at 'labour front' (they had to be on duty on the roofs, for example, - to put fougasses into sand during air attacks). There was women air squadron 'Night Witches' (Sabaton has a song about it). So it is not like 'Mulan', because Mulan pretended to be a man and she went instead of her father, as I remember, but these women were officially allowed there. This movie is about real story, she was a sniper (killed about 300 fascists). Many women were at war - some of them went there because of sense of duty, some of them went there to revenge for their killed husbands and fiancees (there was at least one killed man in every family - either relative, or fiancee, so many women felt like they must go to the war, and there was a famous song with first verse saying 'Good buy, boys, please try to come back', and the second (after the girls gave their wedding dresses to their younger sisters and went to the war) 'Good buy girls, please try to come back'. First men, then women. There are even stories when a woman and her daughters, having lost their husband|father and all brothers, went to the war all together - the woman and her five daughters. The heroine of the movie went to the war after the ballot. The song was not initially about WWII, but its author is dead (he died in a car accident), so they used this song for the movie, and Polina Gagarina sang it very well.

But it's fine, you know. :) Second fact - the song was written by Victor Tsoy, the frontman of Kino band, not so long before he died in 1990. :( His fellow musicians told that for Tsoy this song was something very personal and serious. However, there is no information (that I could find) that this song is connected in anyway with war themes. However, I agree that the part of the lyrics may make you feel so, especially with this musical arrangement created specifically for the movie soundtrack and for Polina's vocal features. However, if you try to listen the original version, it doesn't sound dramatic in any way. It's definitely sad and serious, but not dramatic.

Germany suddenly attacked Soviet Union in July of 1941, and it took unbelievable efforts of all Soviet people to stop this war and turn it back - to the Victory point in 1945. Four long years all our country lived and struggled as one person, forgiving about what is personal and whoever you are - man or woman. Our ancestors did impossible - they stood up in the face of a united army of all of Europe - the most powerful army in history, whose goal was to destroy our country. Our people paid for this Victory at the cost of at least 20 million lives (or much more) - both soldiers and civilians. I think this version of Cuckoo is the most toothless one, and also a commercial plagiarism. Viktor Tsoy and band Kino were one of the icons of late soviet rock-n-roll, their songs were full of anti-system notions and rebellion against soulless regimes. Their lyrical and poetic, yet full of spite, songs captured the hearts of millions. The Cuckoo is a 1990 song and it's about asking yourself how much strength you have left in you and if it's worth to continue the fight (alluding to that it's totally worth it). This song is ICONIC in every way, you'd be hard-pressed to find anyone in the post-USSR to not have heard the song. In 2011 Olga Kormukhina - another icon of late soviet and post-soviet rock (50 y.o. at the moment) with her composer Alex Belov wrote a rock cover to the song. They made it sound heavier and filled with more force and personally my favorive version. The cover was properly copyrighted and afaik proper royalties were paid. The song was changed in a very distinct way: it was sped up, it was switched to a very unique time signature that was not used for this song ever before, also several additional instuments were added and their parts were quite special. This Cuckoo became a rock anthem to anti-system rebellion. In 2017 Polina Gagarina and her producer Meladze (a very prominent figure in Russain music scene) released Gagarina's verios of the Cuckoo. Problem is - it's a completely stolen version that Kormukhina made - even the super-recognizeable time signatures and additional instrument parts. But the overall "power" of the music was lowered significantly, while vocals turned into lyrical and soft - the songs are IDENTICAL though and there are even vidoes of direct comparison. Courts have been in session since 2017, since Gagarina's version is a direct plagiarism of Kormukhina's cover and Meladze's agency didn't even pay royalties to the original owners of the right to the song. However Meladze is powerful enough to stall the courts and not pay anything even though court expects concluded the songs to be identical.
A quick search on prime or here on RUclips will find another jem. The Dawns Here are Quiet is a series with very good production value, great character development and story. Because it is subtitled one has to be invested in watching it. Unlike other series you have to start at the beginning as the plot and characters build and mature. Enjoy.

It's not that simple, the Second World War is a people's war for the Russians. Just watch them celebrate their Victory in that war. The entire people of the Soviet Union were involved, and a lot of people died. To tell the truth, I don't understand why the United States participated in that war at all. Almost no use for them. @Alexey Terekhov Actually, there were mobilizations of women in USSR during the Great Patriotic War. In 1942 alone there were 3 such mobilizations: first in March 100.000 female Komsomol members were sent to air defence units, second in April 30.000 women were sent to signal corps, third in April too 40.000 women were sent to air force units. The subsequent mobilizations were less numerous but they took place nonetheless.

I would rather recommend you checking out "Hardcore Henry", because it is an indie Russian movie that was crowdfunded and released in American cinemas. The most successful female sniper in world history - 309 destroyed enemy soldiers and officers. With the filing of American journalists, she received the nickname "Lady Death". In the USSR, it was assigned the image of a well-deserved hero and war veteran.
In June 1942, she was seriously wounded. From the besieged Sevastopol (Crimea), she was evacuated to the Caucasus, and then completely withdrawn from the front line and sent along with the Soviet delegation to Canada and the United States of America. Yes, it was allowed for women to fight in WWII in Soviet Union, many women in Soviet Union went to the war - many were hospital nurses (and they pulled soldiers to safe places from battle fields, sometimes even under fire), radio operators. Those who stayed home, worked at 'labour front' (they had to be on duty on the roofs, for example, - to put fougasses into sand during air attacks). There was women air squadron 'Night Witches' (Sabaton has a song about it). So it is not like 'Mulan', because Mulan pretended to be a man and she went instead of her father, as I remember, but these women were officially allowed there. This movie is about real story, she was a sniper (killed about 300 fascists). Many women were at war - some of them went there because of sense of duty, some of them went there to revenge for their killed husbands and fiancees (there was at least one killed man in every family - either relative, or fiancee, so many women felt like they must go to the war, and there was a famous song with first verse saying 'Good buy, boys, please try to come back', and the second (after the girls gave their wedding dresses to their younger sisters and went to the war) 'Good buy girls, please try to come back'. First men, then women. There are even stories when a woman and her daughters, having lost their husband|father and all brothers, went to the war all together - the woman and her five daughters. The heroine of the movie went to the war after the ballot.
The song was not initially about WWII, but its author is dead (he died in a car accident), so they used this song for the movie, and Polina Gagarina sang it very well.

@@IntricatelyRandomAsian well, our ethnicities (slavic, turk, many others living here) had very poor choices: since we weren't considered to be 'nordic', we were considered either to be enslaved, or to be murdered, because we were 'untermensch' according to fascism, and well... they did if here (captured slaves, SS often slauhtered whole villages), so there was no choice really. We just wouldn't be born if they didn't go to the war, and they would be either killed, or enslaved :(there was a theory that 'slavs' means 'slaves').

К тому же японцы в Китае не разрушали города и инфракстуртуру, а вот советским после войны пришлось восстанавливать слишком много

Beautiful song, but there's a much more impressive live performance of this song, believe it or not. Gives me shivers every time. The song is very old, it was written by Viktor Tsoy, a very famous Soviet rock musician but I gotta say Polina's performance is absolutely wonderful, her voice is amazing.

Second fact - the song was written by Victor Tsoy, the frontman of Kino band, not so long before he died in 1990. :( His fellow musicians told that for Tsoy this song was something very personal and serious. However, there is no information (that I could find) that this song is connected in anyway with war themes. However, I agree that the part of the lyrics may make you feel so, especially with this musical arrangement created specifically for the movie soundtrack and for Polina's vocal features.
However, if you try to listen the original version, it doesn't sound dramatic in any way. It's definitely sad and serious, but not dramatic.

You may be watched the movie with Jude Law, Ed Harris, Rachel Weisz, "Enemy at the Gates", about the male sniper Vassili Zaitsev, who killed 225 Germans in the battle of Stalingrad.
What is interesting? Many people have heard about Zaitsev, and they consider him to be a record holder if we talk about the number of killed German. And it is not true, the best of the best is one guy from Sweden (of course, he didn't kill Germans, I think he killed a lot of Russian). And even Pavlichenko had more kills than Zaitsev, but only few people know that and remember her.

Girl, you should learn something about WWII history in Russian's part. Germany suddenly attacked Soviet Union in July of 1941, and it took unbelievable efforts of all Soviet people to stop this war and turn it back - to the Victory point in 1945. Four long years all our country lived and struggled as one person, forgiving about what is personal and whoever you are - man or woman. Our ancestors did impossible - they stood up in the face of a united army of all of Europe - the most powerful army in history, whose goal was to destroy our country. Our people paid for this Victory at the cost of at least 20 million lives (or much more) - both soldiers and civilians.

I think this version of Cuckoo is the most toothless one, and also a commercial plagiarism.
Viktor Tsoy and band Kino were one of the icons of late soviet rock-n-roll, their songs were full of anti-system notions and rebellion against soulless regimes. Their lyrical and poetic, yet full of spite, songs captured the hearts of millions.
The Cuckoo is a 1990 song and it's about asking yourself how much strength you have left in you and if it's worth to continue the fight (alluding to that it's totally worth it). This song is ICONIC in every way, you'd be hard-pressed to find anyone in the post-USSR to not have heard the song.
In 2011 Olga Kormukhina - another icon of late soviet and post-soviet rock (50 y.o. at the moment) with her composer Alex Belov wrote a rock cover to the song. They made it sound heavier and filled with more force and personally my favorive version. The cover was properly copyrighted and afaik proper royalties were paid. The song was changed in a very distinct way: it was sped up, it was switched to a very unique time signature that was not used for this song ever before, also several additional instuments were added and their parts were quite special. This Cuckoo became a rock anthem to anti-system rebellion.
In 2017 Polina Gagarina and her producer Meladze (a very prominent figure in Russain music scene) released Gagarina's verios of the Cuckoo. Problem is - it's a completely stolen version that Kormukhina made - even the super-recognizeable time signatures and additional instrument parts. But the overall "power" of the music was lowered significantly, while vocals turned into lyrical and soft - the songs are IDENTICAL though and there are even vidoes of direct comparison. Courts have been in session since 2017, since Gagarina's version is a direct plagiarism of Kormukhina's cover and Meladze's agency didn't even pay royalties to the original owners of the right to the song. However Meladze is powerful enough to stall the courts and not pay anything even though court expects concluded the songs to be identical.

It's not that simple, the Second World War is a people's war for the Russians. Just watch them celebrate their Victory in that war. The entire people of the Soviet Union were involved, and a lot of people died. To tell the truth, I don't understand why the United States participated in that war at all. Almost no use for them. Many countries educate their citizens in the belief that the Second World war was worthless, or that it was their state's efforts that were decisive. This is not true. The victory was won by the USSR. 27 million losses speak for themselves. France did not last more than a few weeks, and at that time it was the third army in the world. England and America are useless. The world did not become fascist thanks to the USSR. However, the basis of fascism has always been the idea of the superiority of one race over another, that you can divide people into varieties like apples (by the way, this is why fascism and communism are two anti-ideas), and I see the desire of people in Western civilization to this idea, a subconscious desire of course. Mass pogroms in America, kissing shoes, ugh. " Kiss my shoes because you are guilty for your ancestor." Horror. Just awful. 7:30 Yes, this is a movie, it's called Battle for Sevastopol. And if you like this kind of movies (war biopics) it's worth checking out. I would say it's one of the few decent modern Russian movies about WWII (though it was a joint Russian-Ukrainian production, maybe this helped somehow).

You watched it as a high production movie, and the only thing that you was interested in the end is if she was shot. For Russians and other post Soviet countries war theme is really important and serious. Almost every Soviet family suffered from Nazis.This film is good not only because of production, but also because of the fact that it's trueful.
You knew that this video is going to be about war, was it that hard to search for information before your reaction? It's not just song and it's not just movie. It's our history. @Alexey Terekhov Actually, there were mobilizations of women in USSR during the Great Patriotic War. In 1942 alone there were 3 such mobilizations: first in March 100.000 female Komsomol members were sent to air defence units, second in April 30.000 women were sent to signal corps, third in April too 40.000 women were sent to air force units. The subsequent mobilizations were less numerous but they took place nonetheless.

First of all, yes, she does kinda look like Emily blunt, you are not alone. Secondly, war is engraved in the Russian culture since we've been under the Mongols for like 500 years and then were fucked during pretty much every European war. For Crist's sake, apart from the both world war and Napoleon, we had 12 full out wars with just Turkey, of all things.
Russian are quite pacifistic now, but all of the wars affected the culture for sure.
Third of all, yes, this is the movie "Battle for Sebastopol". I would rather recommend you checking out "Hardcore Henry", because it is an indie Russian movie that was crowdfunded and released in American cinemas. It is pretty bonkers, but I don't know if you are into such types of movies. Definitely has a very "boyish" energy, but you can check out the trailer to see if you would like it.
