    I personally dislike the term “automatic” for this bike or any of the Honda DCT models for that matter because the term requires defense. I own the Honda CTX700 DCT now, a great bike and a super precursor to owning the new GW. And I love to shift, cars, bikes, anything with a clutch. But the DCT simply lets you enjoy your ride mindlessly with ALL the shifting features of a manual and then some without ever worrying about stalling, imperfect shifts, hill starts, and more. I’m someone who engine brakes like crazy. With the DCT, a microsecond thumb push downshifts into your turn while the bike up shifts as you throttle out. To all naysayers, get over your machismo and try the DCT because as Shawn imparts, you will be blown away. I do dream of the new GW... anyone have an extra $25k laying around? Happy riding all.

    • @thesollylama130
      @thesollylama130 3 года назад

      I love the CTX700 DCT. I've had everything from radical 60's choppers to replica super bikes-- and the CTX is one of my favorites over the years for sheer riding pleasure. It is only a 670cc so with two full size Americans on board, it's does take a bit of throttle to get her moving, but solo she is quite peppy. Not fast, just lots of low end grunt. That really favors back road blasting over highway cruising. The DCT is the wave of the future, which is why pretty much every supercar comes with 'flappy paddles' now.
      I never use the automatic modes, I feel they need serious remapping, but when shifting is twitching a finger or thumb, who cares about auto mode anyway?
      Best part about DCT is wide open throttle upshifting, which is why it's so popular in Ferrari's as well. No need to roll off to upshift, just keep it pinned and pull the trigger like Doc Holiday.
      The back-and-forth parking spot feature is brilliant. Really innovative thinking for such a common problem. I'm not a heavyweight touring guy, but if I were the DCT Goldwing would be on my short list of bikes to look at.

Nothing wrong with that. Ride in flip flops and shorts. Awesome. But riding for the "naysayers" you speak of, is to fulfill a different passion. One where the rider/Human is much more responsible for the outcome of the experience. This is the bike I'd use when I want a woman on back and I'm feeling chatty.

    I would absolutely, positively, get the DCT model without even a consideration of the standard, manual transmission. No contest. All the power of that GoldWing at your command with a simple twist of the wrist? It will get up and off the line and blowing your hair back (if you still have any) way before you can shift through those same gears yourself! I have a Honda Silverwing scooter with a 600cc engine and i love how easy it is to drive and how quickly I get that 600cc up and moving! I can only imagine what it would be like to have that same command over the big, beautiful GoldWing! You talk about a thriller!!

  • @ChaseB1896
    @ChaseB1896 4 года назад +82

    Hey there, as a Honda motorcycle Tech I just wanted to add a few comments that might help you understand a few different sections that you talked about in this video.
    When you were talking about the 'maneuvering mode' where you were moving the bike forwards and backwards, you mentioned that it "switches" back and forth quickly. I wanted to add for some people (who may be concerned, such as for previous models) that reverse is not used by the starter motor anymore on the DCT ((still does on manual)). It has a reverse gear). So, what the bike does when you activate the maneuvering mode, is it actually puts the bike in 1st gear in #1 clutch, and reverse in #2 clutch. So you are in two gears at same time. When you press +, it slowly engages 1st clutch with oil pressure to glide you forward. When you press - button, it slowly engages #2 clutch to glide you backwards. So, there is no real 'switching'. It just simply engages one clutch or the other depending on your button press.
    I was skeptical about the DCT. I love riding, and I always said that shifting was half the fun of riding a motorcycle. But the DCT is so technologically cool and surreal to experience yourself, I have fallen in love with the system, and would not hesitate to buy one. For anyone curious, the shifting system is intelligent enough for you to do slow-speed maneuvers as good as a manual bike. I have done tight u-turns in the parking lot of my shop. It is a very easy and nimble bike to ride. I'm also a very small-framed person, weighing in at around 117lbs on average. I have a lot of riding experience, and I have done the same u-turns on Harley-Davidson Ultra Classics. It is a great bike for people of all sizes, in my opinion.
    A comment on the bike learning your riding. It is something I have not heard of, perhaps it is possible. I just know that the software has been fine tuned extremely well to understand when to logically decide when it is best to shift up, or shift down. Like you mention, it takes into account throttle position, change in throttle position, deceleration rate (and change in deceleration), acceleration rate (and change in acceleration), lean angle, etc. There are a variety of factors and as far as I know there is no logic for the bike to 'Learn', Honda engineers have just simply done an exceptional job at making the software for handling the shifting very intelligent.
    I think that some of the illusion of the bike knowing you could be in the fact that it has so many different gear ratios (given the 7th gear, it's not geared the same as other bikes), and when you add in the smoothness of the DCT, you may not even notice that it has downshifted. So when you may expect it to downshift, it may have already done so, you just don't notice the engine braking as much.
    If there are any other questions you have about the bike, I could try and answer them as best as I can. I don't know everything about the bike, I haven't gotten to work on many yet, no major issues that I have seen or come across yet. It's one of my favorite bikes from honda, and I'm not close to being an old guy, but I am a motorcycle enthusiast (I own a ZX-14R and a CRF250L, I just love all bikes :) )

      Reliability of the dct, in your experience?

    • @ChaseB1896
      @ChaseB1896 4 года назад +7

      @@wretchedrider2157 I haven't really had to do work outside of maintenance so far. Though, the number of goldwings I get compared to Pioneers and ATV's is significantly smaller. The DCT system in the Pioneers and quads are very similar, so I can tell you with experience there how the system is.
      The biggest factor with the DCT is that it's MUCH more important than ever that you make sure you're changing your oil a minimum of once a year if you don't reach 3,000 miles or so in one year. I would even do two. One, say, in March, and a second during the summer or september area. Just to keep that oil as fresh as possible because the DCT relies heavily on healthy oil. If you are someone who waits to change their oil after they hit the mileage number (which for some people can be after 3 years) you'll find yourself burning up the clutches, or getting a stuck clutch due to moisture. This is something you should NEVER do to begin with, but I'm simply stating that the after effects are amplified here with how vital GOOD oil is to the health of the DCT.
      USE MOTORCYCLE OIL. I can't state this enough. So many people use car oil and it is extremely damaging to motorcycle engines. Motorcycle oil is made to be tougher at a microscopic level, and this is primarily due to the fact that it also runs through and gets meshed in the gears of the transmission (You also have two extra gears here. a 7th gear, and a Reverse gear). Car oil breaks down very fast in a motorcycle engine and you'll soon find yourself with mechanical failures and clutch slippage.
      I have only had to replace one #1 clutch in a pioneer once, out of all the SXS's and quads I've worked on, and it was due to the guy abusing it and parking it in water at the seat level. The rest of the engine held up good, and the guy changed his oil frequently, however it simply wasn't frequent enough to prevent this.
      So if I had to give you a concrete answer on how reliable it is, it is very reliable for sure. However, you WILL be hearing many different experiences because of people who think they know the "right way" to care for their motorcycle and wind up getting into trouble. I've seen it a lot... and it happens. Change your oil often, and use motorcycle oil (Honda makes their own oil, just use it. Oil is cheap insurance on your engine.)
      If you have any other specific questions I could try to answer.

    I have the CTX700 that the DCT came from and love it. Do not miss a clutch lever at all. It takes a short time to get used to, but the push button shifting is absolutely brilliant. I never use the automatic modes, although for a giant Goldwing touring bike I could see it being more useful. But with shifting reduced to a flick of either a finger or thumb-- there is zero downside to it being in 'manual' mode. The DCT acts like a slipper so you can't break the rear loose on hard downshifts, making it really easy to ride aggressively. Add a total inability to stall regardless of the load or incline it's on- it's just a dream for real day to day use. You can do full throttle upshifts, no having to back off the throttle to match RPM. I think it's a great system, even if the auto modes could use some remapping.

    Take this from an old geezer. I waited for this bike to hit the showroom here in Lubbock Texas back in 2018. I was only curious as to who the hell would want a DCT. Surely not me, I’ve been shifting gears all my life. Well, it showed up finally and I told the salesman I just wanted to demo it, I damn sure wasn’t going to buy it. I’ve had every Goldwing since ‘81. Well TBH, the 1100,1200,and 1800. I took that DCT out for a spin and it put a grin on this old man that almost 4 years later is still there. By far the most amazing motorcycle in my 60 years of riding. I’m going to ride this DCT to my funeral. And I’m damn sure going in sport mode. I love this bike. Lost the love of my life a few years back….. but, this has replaced her pretty well. Can’t say I want to ride anything different. I get a nut on this DCT just fine… lol….. but amazingly true. Retired last year and hitting the road this year and I’m out on the Goldwing. Not day trips either, I’m taking long 1-2 months trips with a short nap in between

    I have had a 700 NC DCT for about 3 yrs now and still am amazed. Haul ass and smiling all the way. And I'm an ex super bike nut. I loved those screaming 4s with some cam work and heavy valve springs. Back cut gears and all. But no more worn out left hand and sores on top of my foot after a day of carving. I'll NEVER go back. But as said, If your still doing wheelies stay classic format. But thats the only friggin reason in my book.

      "THE LORD"???????
      A dreadful figment of the imagination - of many many scribes, recording "word of mouth" folk tales - in the Middle East. Parchment documents, edited, lost and re-written - with the "Gospels" in general disagreement with each other -as they were "written hundreds of years after the events, that did not happen.
      Factor in translation by semi-literate scribes: from Aramaic, to Hebrew, to GERMAN (YES!!) to English - and different versions - according to the whims of editors, publishers and Kings!!....... and we have a reliable document to "DICTATE" a 21st Century life-style????
      Factor in constant changes, misinterpretations, edits, arbitrary choices - WHY only FOUR "Gospels" - many more were "available" -(bizarrely, to match nicely, with the four horsemen of the apocalypse, actually), and these events depicting slavery, misogyny, sodomy, child sacrifice (god's idea) slaughtering animals on stone altar's - god loved the smell of blood (Yes - I'm afraid, it IS written!), mass slaughters, tribes wiping out other tribes - at god's insistence, plagues of locusts, disease, famine, turning women into pillars of salt, a global flood.....and so on.....NICE!
      But as he was omniscient - he knew all this would happen - but decided to just let it happen anyway..........NICE!
      Thankfully all lies - but even as the vilest work of fiction, it depicts the basest and cruellest of human behaviour, human suffering and slaughter - apparently driven by god's love????
      Yet SOME fools ALLOW this disgraceful old Middle Eastern document, to dictate the way they live their lives, in the 21st Century - thousands of miles, from where the lies originated??????????
      Honoured?????
      How can anyone honour a record of such vile depravity?????

    I owned the VFR1200X DCT for a couple years. I enjoyed it, never took it out of auto, though the gear selection wasn't always what I would have chosen. I have never owned a bike with a quick shifter, but when I consider the added weight of the DCT, and the fact that many people opt for manual mode, I wonder if a quick shifter might be more practical. Also, I wish that the side cases would each hold a full size helmet.

      I sold my 2014 FJR1300ES and bought a 2022 GW tour DCT. I loved the FJR, but the wing is a better bike. Better suspension, brakes, handling, and comfort. The GW is a little down on top end power, but you won't notice with that 100ft/lb of torque from 0 to 3500 RPM. Speaking of power - A lot of my friends thought it would be slow. Put it in sport mode at a stoplight and pin it when it turns green. The front end gets super light, and the traction control is blinks rapidly! Feels like it's going to pull your arms out of the socket!

Ultimately you need two bikes, one DCT.

    For me, some of the pleasures of owning a motorcycle are “feeling the road “ and shifting gears. As far as the windshield going up and down, my BMW K1200LT did that. I had one of the previous generation Goldwings and my only complaint about it was whenever I tried to ride it like a sport bike, I always drug the boards even sooner than I did on a Harley. Now that I’m officially an old guy, I’d probably like this Goldwing. Unfortunately my legs don’t work like they used to so I’m off 2 wheels for good. Ride safely.

      @@ronniemassart3834 what a thoughtful response. That would make a great deal of sense if I were able to lean into curves in the same way I did on 2 wheels.

    I can see setting up a savings account for the rear tires your'e going to be needing for this awesome bike. I miss my Goldwing.

    Honda was losing the older guy market for a long time , so heavy and shifting up an down. To hard on the knees , I sold my silver wing scooter to a older guy , he was so happy ride again and no sweat. These bikes will slowly win back the 60plus market , where the money is.

    I’m on my second GW. My first one was an 1983 1100. I’ve had a Suzuki, Harley, and still have a Yamaha V-Star 1100 Custom Special. Of all the bikes I’ve had, my 2018 GW GL1800 DCT is the best. The most comfortable and smooth ride ever. I’ve got all the bells and whistles there is available. Some ppl have complained the trunk space isn’t enough. I can fit two helmets in it just fine. Love the heated seats and hand grips. The electric windshield is nice when you have a passenger bc it helps cut down the wind on them. It’s like sailing down the highway when Cadillac made the large comfortable cars. It took me a while to stop wanting to squeeze the clutch. But, being able to do everything with the touch of a button is nice like changing driving modes from tour, speed, and rain is nice. When you put it in speed hang on bc it gets up and moves.
