Australian Railway Signalling - Conflicting Aspects

  • The separate states of Australia are all responsible for managing their own railway networks, and as a result each has evolved in very different ways. In the 20th century the busier networks started adopting more complex signalling systems, and this was not standardised across the country. As a result of this, the systems we see today have many signal aspects which mean completely different things in different states. This isn't a major problem as very few drivers actually need to learn multiple systems, but it's certainly a curiosity of the un-coordinated approach taken to railways in Australia.
