Chamfer Planes | USA (Woodpeckers) vs. China (Banggood.com) vs. DIY Block Plane Sled

  • I was a victim of Instagram marketing and bought a cheap chamfer plane from Banggood.com. My buddy Keith (bit.ly/3ymKofd) was kind enough to send me the Woodpeckers chamfer plane to try after hearing how much I hated the cheap knock off. I also made my own chamfer sled for my block plane. I recommend saving your money on both chamfer planes and to make your own block plane sled.

Saw another channel put a small sliver of card stock inside the plane against the blade's side to stop the chatter. Seemed to work. The Woodpecker is $160 not including shipping (if it's available). I like the DIY idea of making your own edge plane, but honestly, I think I can justify the $15 for a dedicated plane.

I bought a similar knockoff plane from a different supplier and it has a locking screw to secure the blade after it’s adjusted. Clicking on the link you provided shows the plane now has the same locking screw. This plane works good enough for what I need, but if you’re a serious woodworker I’d probably consider the Woodpecker.

Maybe you just got a bad one. @ $15.. might be worth it ..if you get a new one that may be tight with no slop. I like the woodpecker..but I think $150. For each profile you want..may be steep. Try Saker chamfer that comes with 6 different profiles for the one plane

It's a bladed tool. That means its ability to hold an edge is crucial. You didn't test that. I don't want to be sharpening a plane's blade every ten strokes because it won't hold an edge. Saying the knockoff can cut a decent chamfer once and that the only superior things about the other plane is its fit and finish and feel is like deciding a cheap knife is 80% as good as one with a hardened steel blade just because you can put an edge on it that can slice a piece of paper -- once.

The biggest factor for me between these is Woodpeckers has different planes for different cutters. The grand total adds up but the low cost ones come with the three different cutters.
This goes into a sort of nose dive too when you factor in hand planes. The standard Veritas block plane has a 23 dollar accessory for 45 that, of course, I bought. It’s a cool tool but doing it by eye and feel is just as good.
Maybe somehow you can use a dedicated roundover tool for quick work on parts that have fresh and fragile edges. Maybe they’re heavy or the amount of them making it useful to hit everything quickly. It’s a weird one and I like it but it’s definitely a luxury and not a necessity for me.
I think Woodpeckers is nice but haven’t gotten to buying any. I do have many other similar tools like iGaging bench squares. I don’t think I’d be able to resist buying the set of roundover/chamfer planes.

$569 for Four EZ-Edge Corner Planes, 1/8", 3/16", 1/4" Radius, 45 Degree Chamfer, and 4 Rack-Its. Its. It awful but if it was a little cheaper.. yeah. I’d buy it.

Visited the web page. No doubt quality made, but dude - $160 for a plane with ONE bit...?
Then another $25 per every bit I need?
Including add. costs for shipping to Sweden, Im looking at $400 easy.
Not happening, nor is some chinese nock off crap crossing my door step.

You can sell your soul and buy from China. My soul can’t be bought. Jorgensen makes one with 4 blades that fit in back. However made in China. I went with Woodpeckers. It’s expensive to have a soul these days.
