Yes it should work if the laptop turns on while connected to a power supply. All BIOS updates require uninterrupted power and an AC Adapter qualifies for that.
resetting the bios password on ThinkPads can be tricky. On the older models you are able to short the EEPROM chip by touching two pins with a piece of metal right during boot. I would lookup your model on RUclips. I know the newer ones are near impossible...you have to physically remove the EEPROM chip and replace it with a new chip. Keep in mind however...if you load Windows onto an SSD using another PC and then put the SSD back into your laptop...it will still boot up. Things you may not be able to do is booting from a usb drive and updating your bios.
This is useful for Linux users because we don't get BIOS updates support for it.
