    So glad that you decided to do this on your own Brad, you carried that other channel for so long. Where could you go to find out about sustainable aquaculture here in Texas? You should do an episode about bycatch because people don't understand that there are other fish that are delicious that get wasted just because they are not on the list for the grocery store.

      Very hard to grow kelp in the Gulf since the droppoff is very steep. You really need shoals to do it properly. Temperature is probably a bit of an issue for most breeds of kelp as well.

    To those who don't know, the oceans absorb more carbon from the atmosphere than trees. Kelps love to eat that so in turn it helps to reduce water temperatures which then help to fend off storms from hitting land, that helps to reduce damage to infrastructure, less damage means less maintenance so money can be rerouted to other areas of governance.
    Kelps are essentially the hemp of the sea but it takes in more carbon ❤

    The part @5:48 about commercial fishing ownership made me proud to have spent a decade in a similar individual ownership model. Just three guys (me, my best bud, and his dad). One 28' skiff. 6 or 7 "setnetting" gillnets. 10 years. We must have picked between 300,000-500,000 red (sockeye) salmon. Pulled the boat out by hand (sometimes against 6'+ breakers). Pulled the nets by hand (no hydraulics). Pitched the fish by hand (no seine bags). Took a lot of salt spray over the bow. Got a lot of bruises and sore muscles. Didn't make too much money, but was a hell of a time!
    10 years on a small crew like that, it's like you read each others minds and predict every movement.

  • @thewiseturtle
    @thewiseturtle 10 месяцев назад +1

    Somehow I missed this when it first came out. Glad RUclips snick it into my recommended list after watching the cast iron episode. It looked like you were leaving from the Falmouth town landing, which is a couple of blocks from where I grew up (I still marvel at how amazingly lucky it was that my mom and stepfather were able to get really affordable rent for a house right near the ocean for so long).
    It's been great to see seaweed really taking off as a food harvested/grown in Maine, as a way to serve a more vegetarian lifestyle. I'm a big fan of kelp, especially. (A different Maine company has apple smoked kelp flakes that I've been using for a long time for seasoning lots of dips and dressings and veggies and such.)
    Oh, I'm wondering if you'll ever do a show on salt harvesting on this channel (I know you did one for those *other* people). Maine has a lot of salt companies too.
    Finally, do you know about the Common Ground Fair that the Maine Organic Farmers and Gardeners Association (MOFGA) puts on every September in tiny little Unity? It's a huge festival that's focused primarily on locally made organic food, both packaged and made there on the fairgrounds. They have a rule that the fairground food has to be heavily focused on Maine grown organic ingredients. And the festival is on the grounds of a working farm and orchard. It's an amazing resource for anyone interested in growing their own food, and living off the land in general. (And occasionally the sea, too. :-)
