This Song was actually from a POET. The lyrics are about her inability to sleep “INSOMNIA” so she walks through her city and the invisibility she felt. The poem is over a CENTURY OLD. During DIANA’s participation of the RUSSIAN MASKED SINGER competition…she also covered another beautiful poem “ I’ll Win You Back” by the same POET. The clicking I also believe is suppose to be a clock 🕰️.

Greetings from Scotland! Great analysis from a sound engineer perspective. The song is intentionally like this because it was intended to have an old style sound. If you are an insomniac, you may spend a lot of time walking around at night when everyone else is tucked up asleep, at home in their beds. Basically, that's the story she tells here. Beautifully sung by Diana in that naturally deep, chocolate toned, silky voice of hers. Set to music by Brandon Stone who knows his stuff.
Originally from a poem by the famous Russian Poet, Marina Tsvetaeva way back in July 17, 1916.
Insomnia. In my enormous city it is - night...
Just by way of a little background info on the original writer of the poem's sad ending:-
On 31 August 1941, while living in Yelabuga, Tsvetaeva hanged herself. She left a note for her son Mur: "Forgive me, but to go on would be worse. I am gravely ill, this is not me anymore. I love you passionately. Do understand that I could not live anymore. Tell Papa and Alya, if you ever see them, that I loved them to the last moment and explain to them that I found myself in a trap."
According to the book "The Death of a Poet: The Last Days of Marina Tsvetaeva", the local NKVD department tried to force Tsvetaeva to start working as their informant, which left her no choice other than to die by suicide.

Diana is a perfectionist. She would never release a "tainted product." If you hear distortions, then this is what Diana wanted and you need to look for the meaning of these distortions. The effect of an "old vinyl record" is too banal, but the effect of a "badly tuned radio receiver" with a "floating" wave is brilliant, it's like you stumbled upon an old abandoned, dust-covered grand piano in some forgotten theater.

In my Huge City is an absolute masterpiece.
(It is a pity that Diana's microphone is clipping throughout. If only she had competent sound engineers to work with.)
That different people like different songs does not make whether a song is or sounds good "subjective."
People disagree about the facts - e.g. how, where and why the virus C-19 originated - all the time.
But the facts are as they are whatever people think about them.

It's such a great song and performance.
Whether by choice or accident, it's a disappointment that parts of the recording were spoiled by that distortion.
Yeah, it sounds like the electronics were overdriven, to me too. However, I'm not a professional.

It is neither distortion nor clipping (well it is but it is also on purpose) it is the effect that old record players or old radio is making, this wants to pass the feeling of "oldness" in the track since the poem it self is about 100 years old and as for the dissonance of vocals with the music it has also been done intentionally since the lyrics talk about the heroine of the story being in a dream like state while awake because she is suffering from insomnia.
This poem describes a person that is not in a good mental state and so this is exactly what it tries to pass to the listener musically too.
You over analyzed and separated parts of the composition but you did not try to put them all together as a whole, it happens often to all of us especially if we are missing context, thus the saying missing the forest for the trees.
Saying that, i find it very odd that this is the first time you are listening to effects like that in tracks, especially since you are an audio engineer, in Europe there are a lot of tracks that use this in order to sound like old recordings, it is a very popular effect.
In the live version of the song Diana does the vocalizations or the second voice that sounds on the background "live" and the audio engineer still allows the "old distortion" to happen on the prerecorded Diana's voice who sings the couplet part of the song.

I believe you when you say that the distortion is intentional. It's impossible to believe that something that is obvious would be released by mistake.
What I can't understand is why it would be desirable to ruin such a great song and performance.

Dude! The "knock" that irritates you is an intermittent heartbeat, one of the main metaphors for the artistic content of the song, part of its meaning, the creative discovery of the authors! The "distortion" is a special sound "pinup" effect that imitates the soundtrack of the early 20th century, when these lyrics were written (1916). 😁

      @realityviewerXXI 2 месяца назад +2

@@franks9432 Can you hear your heartbeat under normal circumstances? I guess not. But what if a person is under stress, under intense physical strain, or in a state of high nervous tension? This is exactly the state that the authors of the song are trying to convey to the listener with the amplified sound of a heartbeat! This is such an artistic device, such a creative idea of the author! In order to understand it, at least an understanding of the poetic text is required. This is not a technical parameter of the recording... For example, Pink Floyd - "The Dark Side of the Moon. Speak To Me Breathe In The Air" ruclips.net/video/R49d4f5sEs4/видео.html

    • @franks9432

This is a case where the translation is not accurate.
'Clipping' means that electronics are driven beyond their ability to reproduce a clean soundwave. The peaks of the soundwave are clipped off.

Honestly, I couldn’t watch the reaction to the end - you broke down the musical and song(!) work simply into musical components, destroying its integrity. As they say, learn the materiel - delve into the lyrics and then instead of “loud knocking sound, crackling sound”, etc. hear the beating of the pulse, heart, steps in a deserted night city, etc. At night all sounds and feelings intensify and become more acute... =It’s a pity, even though you tried, it turned out, no offense, the worst reaction (( In the finished work, the artist presents the image, and not the colors separately 😉🙂

Dude! *You are a very strange guy!* You are not the author of this music, are you? So why the hell are you criticising other people's work? Brandon Stone wrote the music and arrangement for that song. He made that sound what it is on this record. This is his authorial intent as he personally understands it. Maybe another composer would have done it differently, then the song would be different, not the same as you hear it now.
You criticise the recording as if you were standing next to the composer while he was writing the music, giving him advice that he did not follow.
*If you can compose music, write a song and offer it to Diana youself!* No joke! In this song, everything will be as you wish. 🙂
