I would estimate that more than half of all mountain bikers own some sort of action camera, with which they hope to share their experiences with. These cameras can be used not only for first person footage, but also for filming others. Since action cameras are small, durable, and have wide angle lenses, they’re ideal for capturing anything in your immediate vicinity.
It’s widely known that mounting an action camera on your helmet will give you the most stable footage. Your head acts as a stabilizer and makes the footage more watchable. With the right angle, you can get part of your front wheel and handlebars in the picture as a frame of reference. Action cameras like GoPro can feel super heavy on your head though, so I recommend using one of these frames paired with a lens protector.
While the helmet is probably the easiest and most stable mounting spot, the chest is the most immersive. By putting the viewer behind the handlebars, the video becomes a little more captivating. The problem with chest mounts though is that they’re ridiculously uncomfortable and make you sweat profusely. Mess up the angle, and you'll get a nice shot of your top tube for the duration of your ride. So a chest mount is something I would only use temporarily, but not all day long.
Mounting an action camera to your bike is the most comfortable option, and works great as a secondary angle. Although mounting a forward facing camera to your handlebars looks terrible, I find that it actually works great facing backwards. I wouldn’t want to watch a whole video like this, but it’s an interesting angle for short clips.
Get one of these seat rail adapters, and you can get a rear view or capture your friends. The video is surprisingly stable and watchable, especially on a full suspension bike, so lately I’ve been getting a second angle this way with my Hero 3 Silver.
These are angles that you can get with any action camera, but if you want to take things a step further you can add a stabilizer. These will usually be referred to as wearable gimbals. Typically wearable gimbals come in single, double, and triple axis variations, with each axis improving the video and increasing the cost. Here’s my Feiyu WG-Lite, which is a single axis gimbal that costs well below $100. It’s very well built, and actually has an awesome carrying case which I use for all my other stuff. The problem is that a single axis gimbal doesn’t make that big of a difference when worn on the rider. On the helmet it provides a slight improvement, but on the chest I don’t think it improves anything at all. On the seat rails, the results are noticeably better, so I’ll be using this method in future videos.
If you’re okay with dropping about $300, you can get a triple axis wearable gimbal. You’ll need to be okay with also putting this investment at risk out on the trails. I can tell you from experience though that this is a risk with fruitful rewards. Just look at how the footage looks mounted to your helmet. Of course, it’s insanely uncomfortable to ride like this for long periods of time. Mounting the gimbal on your chest is a little more tolerable, and gives an awesome point of view.
I think one of the greatest benefits of a triple axis gimbal is the footage you can get of other riders. Following someone with helmet-mounted gimbal can make your footage look like it was shot with a drone. You can also just hold it and use it like a normal camera. My Z1 Rider-M comes with a really useful handle that I use for almost every video. With a little practice you can get epic shots, even on foot. Combined with a high end GoPro, you’ll be spending around $700, but the results speak for themselves.
I also want to show you one other option, just because it’s so cool. Domingo has a handheld gimbal camera made by DJI called the OSMO. It uses a built in 4K camera, and a really solid smartphone mount. Here’s Domingo running behind me with his. At a hair over $500, this is a great option for a compact camera to film action sports with. The only downsides are poor battery life and terrible sound quality. Here’s what it sounds like with the built in mic. Of course, you can get extra batteries, and connect an external mic to solve these issues, and even after buying those extras you just can’t get footage like this for any cheaper.

Watching this again and seeing how far action cameras have come in just 6 yrs 👍🏼
Not only do get great footage, you've gotten really good at editing. Your videos are looking very professional and are extremely enjoyable to watch. I look forward to your next video!
+Hollis Prince thanks! This channel has been a pretty big learning experience
I love the behind-the-scenes gear talk as much as the bike gear talk. Thanks!
+No no these videos are some of the most fun to make too
I love the footage I get with the wearable gimbal. Now it's just a battle of bad lighting and tweaking bitrates. The search quality is never done!
Have a look for a stuntman chest mount, larger surface area to reduce bounce
your voice is so soothing
Kida sounds like Chris fix
It is aye 😂
@@antonsworkshopco aha ye
Chest mount is the way to go. Head mount is too disconnected from the riding action of the wearer and uncomfortable in a short time - it also looks really silly. Handlebar mount draws ALL the bike noise into the microphone and is too shaky, but gives the greatest effect for speed - even a comfortable pace seems pretty fast. You nailed the angle challenges. I think the helmet mount has just as many angle issues to solve as the chest mount but you didn't reveal them in this video. The gimbal definitely solves it; however, I personally couldn't risk damage to such an expensive component for the riding and filming I do. I think the chest mount is the best of both situations: it's immersive and not noisy nor shaky and gives good relationship to the pace of the ride. As for comfort: I typically perspire while riding and don't notice any additional from the camera mounted on my chest. It's also very simple to don or doff and makes it a breeze to change any camera settings or batteries.
Well said man💯👍🏼
Epic Bike Rides I use a under the brim mount on a half shell and the angle sucks so I ordered a chesty. The reason the angle sucks is that u can’t see the bars or the wheel
Love you videos. You explain things better than gmbn most of the time. The only thing gmbn has on you is they have more videos. Other than that u r hands down the best for biking and every day I check to see if you have a new video. Also could u make separate videos on how to ride rock gardens, logs, and roots. Thanks man love ur videos and the time u put in them. Keep it up
+Mitchell Borwick I'll eventually
cover all that stuff, and someday I'll be able to do this full time and post more than twice per week. As for you checking every day, click on the little bell icon next to the subscribe button!
thanks for getting back to me!!!
You should also try his buddy's channel, Phil Kmetz MTB. Top notch explanations
Seth, you brought the spark back in to my video creation motivation.
Hello from Romania. Up until a few weeks ago i was beginning to avoid going out with my GoPro when riding the bike/moto/any action sport. I was tired of shaky videos that i would have to go threw to find some usable footage.
Then, I saw your earlier video reviewing the Rider-M, and man, my mind was blown! I saw so many new possibilities, I was excited again.
I looked at GoPro gimbals in the past but they were bulky and i saw that they were jerky on mtb's and any other high speed sport.
But when i saw your video and how stable the footage was, even in the corners, I was hooked.
I am going to get the Rider-M. I would have liked to use your amazon link, but being from Europe, I will get it from amazon uk.
Thank you and keep the awesome videos coming.
+NoLimit Sport I'm glad I inspired you! You're going to be hooked
i bet that seat rail cam looks sick with the dropper post
love the videos keep up the good work
I just find you channel.... You are making some sick vids man! Keep up the good work... :)
+1 subs
Steth I want to thank you for this video. I'm also a biker here in Fl and these tip will help me out big time. Thanks again and keep the good stuff coming.
I'm gonna mount my GoPro on a chickens head, then duct tape it's feet to my helmet. All natural, carbon neutral gimbal 👍🏼
Omg brother, I have always noticed that a chickens head always stays in the same place (even upside down lol)! But great eco-friendly idea!
It may be organic but definitely illegal
That would be an interesting sight to see on the trail
IRON H34RT221 it doesn’t work anymore. They patched it in a recent update
The french youtuber Superconeri did a helmet for a chicken with a camera
Thanks Seth for making such helpful videos, such good quality
I started to use the Akaso 7000 for the rear view road bike view of the cassette gear changes. On the front chest cam the Yi gimbal for the straight shots ( does not pan fast enough for corners). The back view video is shown shown periodically as double screen for the gear changes. It's a great way to show a tutorial on shifting and when it's needed.
Hi Seth, great tip.
I mounted my 3 axis gimbal to the chest mount (which is very tight), but due to the weight of the gimbal acting as a lever effect, it bobs up and down along bumps. This makes the video uncomfortable to watch. How did you overcome this problem?
Dont have one but thumbs up for good question.
And 3 years later.. Get a good chestharness, like Stuntman. Gp or those cheap chinese harness just don't work.
@@RPZ16 lmao
Tight chest strap on hydration pack overlapping the top of the chest mount plate will help reduce this bounce...works on my cheap harness with a GP5 and gimbal.
Seth is a small guy, do what works for u, don't be so hard on yourself
Great video, Seth. What do you think about doing an update for this video? Or what about, “Congrats, you got an action camera! Now what?”
Great tips! We are learning at over 50 how to use some of these tips in making our down here in a key West! Keep it up.
Great video Seth, I've been wanting to start shooting some promo videos for our local trails here in north Florida. This was seriously insightful, and good to know I don't have to spend a small fortune.
After watching a lot of trail video, the stabilizers do make
a huge difference and I want one. I used my new Hero 4 black chest mounted in
it’s case for the first time a few weeks ago. I went down 6 times but luckily
no damage to the camera. I really want a stabilizer but with my crash frequency
it’s gonna be a hard choice to risk the h4 out of its case along with a
stabilizer. But I’m still looking. Great video Seth.
wow the 3 axis gimbal makes it look AWESOME! great video, keep it up!
Mini hack. Note only done with a paintball mask.
If you can find a small enough camera and a way to hold it in place you can get some pretty sick First person views from putting the camera between your eyes, resting on your nose. Might be a bit difficult to get but in paintball the best vids are shot from inside the helmet. (you'll have to go a long way back in my vids to see what I mean though).
One thing that you can do is go into an editing program (Movie Maker, GoPro studios, ect.) and if you go into tools than there is a button that will stabilize the footage
Awesome video as usual dude 🤙
I like to use a roll bar mount and mount it on the top tube back by the seat post.
These trails look awesome! Whereabouts are they? Also great video. Keep up the good work.
Cheers bro, great video, awesum info and tips. Thanks!
nice video! never thought of using a stabilizer before
watching every vid and liking
Thank you! I might start using a 3-axxis Gimbal after all these years now...
That three axis gimbal axis looks awesome! Time to save up money 😂
Hello from one state up at 4 in the morning!
I'm a bmxer and this inspired me to save up some cash to go get a gimbal and a go pro. I'm digging the videos hard.
+google is a corporate overlord good for you man! Too many BMX videos are filmed with camcorders on fisheye. You're keeping it classy.
Seth's Bike Hacks yea I like the clean smooth look.
Personally I would put the camera on chest as u can charge your go pro when on the move so u always got battery life but good videos
useful tips! can you make a video on side hopping, changing directions whit hops, the one you did on the rocks at the seaside? thanks
Great video, very informative!!! Thanks!!
PLEASE MAKE A VIDEO OF THE BEST GOPRO STABILIZERS!!!
Great video man! And tnx for some useful advices :)
Just discovered your channel through the walmart bike experience. I'm really enjoying the other how-to's on bunny hopping and other skills techniques. Can you comment about your editing and uploading process to youtube? I have a go pro hero 3+ and tried a mountain bike trail video but the video (once uploaded to youtube) was unwatchable. It turned out very nicely on the mac using iMovie, but when I uploaded to youtube, going through an excruciating multi-hour stop/start/upload failed process and finally got it on youtube, the video quality looked like 240p vs 1080p. Unwatchable. Your videos look crisp and clear even with the fast action in the scenes. thanks
Hey you should do a "Downhill bike commuting serie" I would like to see what you can do with a 200 mm suspension mtb
Great video. Thanks!
also i really love ur videos and they help me so much!!!
Thank you for the video.
using insta360 one x good option for 2019
Can you please make a vid on how to fix creaks with a full suspension?
MrPotatoAssassin tighten your pivot bolts
Try Sony AS series they have image stabilizer built in and with remote that let u see what u recording.
get a Sony Action Cam they have steady shot which creates great footage
1:23 I really don't agree with this, I just got my first GoPro and handlebar mount, and I love the footage I get from it! Nice vid tho
Hey there! I was wondering for a video idea you could make a video on brakes. Mainly because I have hydraulic and I they re being a pain to bleed. It would also be cool to see more fixing videos on your channel, thanks!
When you forget how to use the grammarz ^
Thank you for the video. Is the mount that you use to attach the GoPro to your helmet the one that comes with camera?
Hi seth absolutely loving your videos my technique has improved so much thanks to you
Also just wondering if you could give me an opinion on something. I am wanting to buy a budget action camera and not sure whether to get a go pro hero or the sj cam 5000 any thoughts ?
+Cameron King Good question...As a more advanced videographer, I would choose the SJCAM since it has a screen and more shooting modes. Also, the camera can be removed from the case, whereas the GoPro Hero is built into the housing. With all that said, the GoPro blows the SJCAM away in low light and auto-exposure, so if you're someplace where the light keeps peaking through the trees and changing the scene, the GoPro comes out on top. As a beginner, the GoPro will result in more consistent video because of this.
Great tips!
Do another vid of all your bikes
hey Seth, can u plz do another bike check on the whole squad?
Over $700 worth of camera gear. You really are one serious dude I know. Awesome footage as always, and a special recreational activity of what looks like wakeboarding on a floatable doughnut, haha!
Just a question Seth. I tried sending you a message but it told me I couldn't, because the message said it failed to send, or the person has deactivated their account. I wanted to ask you how much air you pumped into the DNM Dropper Post, to get it working smooth. What PSI or bar did you preset it to? And also, how did you strip the cable so that you could have only the silver cable exposed, and getting rid of the black hose that surrounds it? Thanks. Would really appreciate it in advance
+John May I shut off my Facebook messaging because it got out of hand, but my website should still work!
+Seth's Bike Hacks Oh okay. I hope l didn't say anything inappropriate...
+John May I think he means messages in general. Not just yours.
have you ever tried mounting the gopro on the toptube that mimics the view of a chest mount? ive never seen someone do that?
very helpful video!!
Cool, nice tips!
2:42. Happened to me on my first WG2X, and its only a few weeks old. lol
hi Seth, we've noticed a couple times and your videos and a lot and other people's videos the one wearing a Gimbal and going through tight Switchback corners that the gimbal tends to point the camera at the outside of the term instead of the direction the writer is going and then catches up after a few seconds. is this caused by a particular setting on the gimbal, do some gimbals do this more than others? we'd love some help before we drop our cash.
Would you make a fixie bike vid one time? I am a fixie biker
+August Gast I have, and will again
Awesome video
Whats the trick to make hills look steep? Whenever i try to film myself going uphill or downhill it still looks like a flat surface... I ride my halfbike everywhere (including offroad and and downhill rides are loads of fun) and it would be cool to get cool footage.
You know that the chest mounts usually have large clips so that you can put them on like a backpack right?
Can u please do more bmx videos? Also keep up the good content
Broh, I hope you get to read this
I want to buy a Bluetooth Speaker for my MTB, but, I was wondering, if you had to buy one, which speaker would you buy recomend?
I have some options: JBL Flip 4, JBL Charge 3, Tronsmart T6 or Avantree Cyclone
If you get to read it, I'm really thank full 👍
Your estimations must be completely off. There is no way that over 50% of the mtb population owns an action cam. Love your videos though, keep them up!
Looks like Markham and Va Key?
Get the gopro app
Man, GoPro has really come a long way
Hey Seth. What do you use for your on the trail sound? Is it just the built in mic for the gopro? Mine sounds worse but I'm guessing that might be because of the housing.
+Phil Hwang yeah the housing (even with the skeleton door) messes up the sound bad. Also the Hero4 has significantly better sound than the Hero3. Lowering the bass while editing also reduces wind noise.
Sorry for contributing to the mess. But my part of the mess wasn't even done with a GoPro, lol.
It is a Sony Cybershot camera ductaped to my helmet on a couple of my real-crappy videos on my old walmart bike, and the same camera strapped with more tape to my chest. I also tried a rear view mirror with the camera ductaped near the seat stays of my bike which ended looking pretty good and thanks to it I realized my rear tire was wobbly :D
You can have a nice look at my DB Hook's top tube too...if you don't mind checking out, Seth :P
Which 3 axis gimble do you recommend? I'd like to get one for chesty Mountain bike footage, but I'd also like to attach it to a pole for follow cam footage alpine skiing.
do you like the hans dampf tires?? or can you give me some advice for some maxxis tires (maybe Minion DHF, Highroller 2, ... )
Why do you find that handlebar footage is crap? Shakiness or just a bad angle?
Single action is more than enough if you are on something smooth.
Any way u could do a updated version with the camera equip yr currently using and the settings
Do You even test a double axis gimbal? What about that?
Yeah, but over rollers, the chest mount is ridiculous, because all you can see is your handlebars going up and down.
The newest action cameras come with integrated stabilization, does it make any difference in trail videos? I mean, does it resolve the shaking problem?
This is unrelated to this video, but how do you clean your mountain bike/lube it?
Can you put a hero session on your 3 axis gimbal? If it can I will buy a gimbal
Unfortunately, my helmet doesn't allow a mount directly in the middle so my video is crooked. Have to figure out another solution or get a new helment.
Seth I was wondering how you can use a chest mount but eliminate the bounce? is this possible with a gimbal?
Do you ever get fisheye with your gopro
Have you found a micro sd card/brand you prefer over the others?
I sometimes struggle with a bunnyhop so can you please give me a little tip
Is that steady spins at 1:16
Can you wear a chest mount over a fox titan sports jacket or are they not that big, I'm pretty skinny though so will I be able to pull it off
Unfortunately, the cost of these cameras and accessories are to high for the average rider like me. I work hard as a truck driver and don't have tons of time to focus on making videos.
Nice video, but how do i reduse the amount of compression when i upload to RUclips. after i export it looks fine, but when I upload it looks fairly compressed. look at my videos for example. how can I fix this?
Where are these Bike trails ?
I wonder if it's possible to mount a dji osmo that thing is pretty lite
Lol! Kevin's roadie helmet!🤣
This just confirmed I won't be buying a camera lol - I don't have the patience to do all this. Still got the biking though!
What is the bag that you use
does any of the external gear for stebilizing will work with the new xiaomi YI2 ?
how much is it for just the gopro stabilizer that you use
Seth, I ordered the bonus video, but I don't see the link anywhere. Is not on the receipt email..
+Gustavo Rey please use the website for inquiries or there's a good chance I won't see it
what bike are you using in this vid
Have you looked at the sony action cam's image stabilisation?
+borat15151 yes, it's really good
Do more box stuff
Bmx
