These old collectable, Esso branded Yale locks can be pretty expensive but often cheaper without a key🔒 what do we do with a lock without a key? 🤔 Make one! 🔑 😃👍🔐
MR/TROLL weirdly enough I don’t think the pin standards are the same here in Australia. I’ve bought a few abus 83 series locks and I’ve also acquired a few through mates and every single one I have picked hasn’t had any security pins at all which i was a little shocked to see. I’ve tried 83WP normal one I’ve also got some older ones and yeah as I said I haven’t encountered any unfortunately.
Very Nice! I use a halogen light source, 400 grit wet / dry to clean the marks, and small vice grips to reduce breakage. Pure preference. The 400 grit leaves a "rainbow" effect under the halogen light, which is bruised off by even the slightest smoothing by the pins. Very easy for old eyes to see.
A creditable job, Ash. Thanks. My father used candle smoke (soot) to darken the key blank edge, for various types of key, in the 1960's and 70's. That was his father's technique too. It scratches really easily, and makes impressioning somewhat easier.
Great job!! There’s nothing like that thrill of having your first impression job pop open! From someone who’s been doing this for 40 years: clamp your lock in a vice the long way (put the jaws on the short sides), don’t clamp against the long sides of the lock. Light is EVERYTHING. Natural light and incandescent light are best. Bright white LED bulbs of 4000k and above are awful. They mask the marks. A soft white 2800k LED is very good. Get a visor with a 2½ power lens. Forget the candle soot. Have fun with it. Get some old locks and a box of blanks and practice.
Something I have never tried before, I think you may have inspired me to delve into it a bit more. Really enjoyed it buddy and a real nice padlock. Have a good weekend
Great vid. Couple of things. Secure the lock in a vise. Get a pippen file it is three files in one. Spaces! Very important. Clean even strokes. Your marks will show up much better. But excellent job sir. I’m impressed. I’ve impresioned over 130k keys for everything
When I attended the National School of Locksmithing and Alarms (NYC) in 1984, we used soot, a triangular file , and instead of an up & down key motion, we would move the key rotationally, back and forth, to make the marks. I still have two keys that I made for a #3 Master padlock .
I recommend to make the final touch with a key decoder: for not to have 1/2 or 2/3 of the cuts, but full ones! Addition: the chart of the key cut pattern (cut spaces and shape) will be a professional finish making it more closer/similar to the factory cut! God bless you for sharing your video!
Fantastic work, very impressive, I’ve never tried to Impression a pin tumbler key yet, I’ve got a few lock with out key so it’s definitely something I will try. Great video, & have a fantastic weekend.
What a great job! I've got an Abus 888 core that has no key and I'm going to get a couple of blanks to try impressioning with. Thanks for the inspiration 😀👍
well done mate very impressive been thinking about doing impressioning myself if i could find a few blanks for a crazy keyway old lockwood i have which i cant pick open for some reason
@@LockNoob not sure if you have heard of a social app called LINE but its a great way to send videos and chat in a room thats invite only thinking about starting a locksport room where ppl can talk live on video or calls share pics and vids and generally help each other ..what do you think? good thing is its completely free and anyone in the room can backread as everything is saved
Beautifully done and explained thoroughly. Thanks for the upload and sharing your experience. I never thought it would have been possible without some fancy decoder.
Very cool Ash mate nicely done I do the other method I run a black marker down there to the key then Wiggle It Through impression where the pins are going to be👊👍😊🇬🇧😎
If you don't mind me asking where do you acquire your key blanks? I have a key machine but I only got master lock key blanks and trying to find bulk is kinda difficult.
Great Job! A lot of work but not only do you have a working key but the satisfaction of a job well done. I'm assuming that if the key did break (say half way though) you could copy what you've done so far on a new blank instead of starting over again from scratch?
I have a padlock with a pair of little sliding doors covering the keyway. When the key is inserted these doors are pushed aside by the key. What is the technical term for these doors and what is their purpose?
Would it be more efficient to use the tool for measuring how deep a key is cut to check how far to file the key down so your going from a 2 to 3 rather than filing the key down a few swipes at a time so that the depth is less random per swipe
I'm curious about one thing. When you break a key before you completed the impressioning process, what do you do to recover? surely you don't start from the beginning. There must be an easy way to save the work you've already done. What do you do?
I bought a bunch of antique padlocks and was wondering where do pickers and collectors go to find help identifying some locks? Is there a forum? Ofc I try image searching etc first but it rarely works.
Very good instructional video on the art of impressioning. You have a great teaching approach which i don't possess. The felt tip pen trick is a great tip. Just a thought and by no means a negative. I reckon you may have been able to expediate the process if the padlock was secured in a firm position. Would have maybe given you a more positive marking as opposed to rocking in your hand. A great teaching video and worthy of sending traffic to. Have a good one:-)
Err...not to be obtuse or anything, but is that not the bitting stamped into the bottom of the padlock? Actually, looking at the final key, perhaps not. Would shooting some graphite in the look give more visible marks? Or possibly treating the key with it to see where it rubs off? If not graphite, Daikum maybe?
Wouldn't it be great if you could get special impressioning keys that are made from softer material so you don't have to bully them so much to get a mark, then use that impressioned bitting to cut an actual key.
You still need enough force to make the pins bind and leave mark which requires a lot more force than say a softer aluminium alloy blank allows. Also the action of inserting the key can make links with pins with strong springs scratch a line along the top of a key. Brass seems to be the best material imo
@@LockNoob someone should invent a tool like a comb with moveable teeth that can be inserted into an opened picked cylinder and the teeth then locked in place. Remove the comb and you have the bitting. I am quite inventive and can find ideas to solve problems..puzzles. But I don't have the skills or the tools to make a device like that.

That works great, but better on lever locks where the pins don’t rub a line through the soot

That was amazing. Definately makes me want to try impressioning some of the older locks i have without keys.

Well done
you done an excellent job on that one 👍
Thanks 👍
That worked out rather well 👍Nice to have the differently shaped keys for the same lock 🙂
Yeah, it sort of tells a story
This is amazing. You're my new hero, first the casting of the key with that clam set now this. I am gonna have to do it too now.
Its addictive!
How satisfying. On my list of things to try. Seen the Pro's impressioning wow they are shockingly fast😮 . Great vid mate 👍

Excellent. I will now attempt the same on an ILCO padlock. Finding the proper blank was half the battle.

WELL DONE You absolute beast!
I am an absolute beast, it’s true 😁
nice job i never have the patience for impressioning
I find it a mixture of relaxation and high stress!
Nice job!
I would paint with a black Sharpie marker the blank blade for to see better the marks from pins!
If you get a blank stuck, use a nylon or wood mallet to whack the pin side of the lock while pulling on the key.
hmm 2008 1 sub? nOt an "nOObee" pin side of lock IN SCREEN DOOR?

HAPPY BIRTHDAY!😊🍰

Very cool to see this process! Thank you for the video! If you didn't have the blank, how would you have selected one?
The manufactuer's name might have been a key clue. Duh
Hi. I’m trying this myself with the same lock. And I was wondering if the number on the bottom means anything? Bitting code maybe?
Would it help to paint the edge of the blank with engineers blue to make the pin marks more visible?
That definitely could work though it add time to the process
Excellent work. However, is the key blank (YA15D) one space too long?
Yes it is really
If you don't mind me asking where do you acquire your key blanks? I have a key machine but I only got master lock key blanks and trying to find bulk is kinda difficult.
eBay, friends and now and again, friendly locksmiths :-)
@@LockNoob ok cool, thanks.
Excellent video, could you hold the key blade over a candle to soot it up and see the marks?
Yes, as long as the pin springs are not too strong as to leave a line as you pull the key in and out
I wonder if there's a similar method to impression mortice/lever locks?
There is! You can twist the blank into levers once you have coated them with candle soot!
I got one of those ESSO 50mm locks but with a Yale key ( not the original key ) on ebay , and it was expensive £80 i think , but it was worth it
They are veeeeeery nice!
Great Job! A lot of work but not only do you have a working key but the satisfaction of a job well done. I'm assuming that if the key did break (say half way though) you could copy what you've done so far on a new blank instead of starting over again from scratch?
You could, or at least you could get close but not too far so you don’t take too much material off.
Nice work
I have a padlock with a pair of little sliding doors covering the keyway. When the key is inserted these doors are pushed aside by the key. What is the technical term for these doors and what is their purpose?
Dust shields to stop dirt, dust and damp entering the keyway.this is why cars/trucks/vans have them
Would it be more efficient to use the tool for measuring how deep a key is cut to check how far to file the key down so your going from a 2 to 3 rather than filing the key down a few swipes at a time so that the depth is less random per swipe
Another great video. I can’t believe you don’t have more subscribers.
Nice of you to say :)
wow what a great video Ash very clever you, well done loving that mic haha
Oddly I filmed this about a year ago when my other pro mic was working at its best 😃 you can tell the age in part by the intro
@@LockNoob its still a great video thank you
I'm curious about one thing. When you break a key before you completed the impressioning process, what do you do to recover? surely you don't start from the beginning. There must be an easy way to save the work you've already done. What do you do?
You can file down a new key to just above where you were before using the snapped key as a template
I bought a bunch of antique padlocks and was wondering where do pickers and collectors go to find help identifying some locks? Is there a forum? Ofc I try image searching etc first but it rarely works.
There are plenty of forums and reddit and Facebook groups, have a google :-)
A apple seed or piping file # 4 cut, work much better. Bensal folly is the best place to get them.
If I did more impressioning I’d definitely buy one!

Is there an advantage to using a file over an originator? With a known space and depth chart, you could prep with zero cuts.
You have to have both, that’s the thing, and the blank. A couple of files and some sandpaper are pretty easy to find
Good job. One word. Pippin file.
If I did more, I’d buy one for sure!
Thank you, for great video.
Nice job. Who do you buy your key blanks from?
eBay, friends, friendly locksmiths :-)
Thank you.
Where can I get a blank for this kind of padlock?
Plot twist: in fact Richard Ayoade does the voiceover for all the videos.
I have the same lock (not esso branded) but also without a key.
Then you know what you have to do!
My question is always trying to distinguish marks between binders and set.
Marks can be hard to see for sure
I've got several keys of that ilk marked sub-master, and grand-master which open a number of locks that I've bought separately off eBay.
Ok
Hi how to make one for a tiny drumless pad lock ?
Wouldn't it be great if you could get special impressioning keys that are made from softer material so you don't have to bully them so much to get a mark, then use that impressioned bitting to cut an actual key.

Estupendo gracias.
Is that a Y 1 key blank?
if you had the bitting depths marked on the side of the key it might have gone quicker, save you from filing to a half bit
If you know them for the lock
Very very kool
Well that's cool but I think I would rather pick it with some kinda decoding tool like a lishi then cut/file a key from that.
Lishi only make a very, very small handful of tools for the most common and open modern keyways
@@LockNoob I could never impression a key like that. I'd be better off with any kind decoding device.
I’m sure you could 😃
